An Introduction to the CHEMISTRY of the SILICONES By EUGENE G. ROCHOW Research Laboratory, General Electric Company NEW YORK JOHN WILEY SONS, INC. LONDON CHAPMAN HALL, LIMITED COPYRIGHT, 1946 BY EUGENE G. ROCHOW AU Rights Reserved This book or any part thereof must not be reproduced in any form without the written permission of the publisher. SECOND PRINTING, MARCH, 1947 PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA To P. G. F. PREFACE The organic compounds of silicon, which have been the subject of many scholarly researches during the past 80 years, at last show promise of emerging from the laboratory and finding a place in industry. An understanding of the behavior of organosilicon materials is necessary to their intelligent use and, inasmuch as the chemistry of these substances ordinarily is not treated in our textbooks, it is possible that a compact yet comprehensive survey of our present knowledge in this field would be of service to chemists, engineers, and industrial designers. This volume has just such a purpose. The first few chapters review the silanes and their derivatives in some detail, in order to provide an understanding of the fundamental chemistry of the nonsilicate com pounds of silicon. The later chapters emphasize the silicone polymers which have achieved commercial importance and deal with the methods for their preparation, their chemical and physical properties, and their possible usas. The processes available for large-scale production are treated separately, and a review of methods of analysis is included. In order not to burden the text with definitions and explanations of nomenclature which might already be familiar to some readers, an extensive glossary of terms is appended. An exhaustive review of the literature on organic compounds of sili con cannot very well be included in a volume intended for the non specialist. However, many references are provided, and tables of most of the known compounds and their properties are included in the appropriate chapters. The reader will find comprehensive reviews of publications in Friends Textbook of Inorganic Chemistry, Volume 11, Part 2 Krause and von Grossed Chemie der Metallorgamschen Ver bindungen, Dolgows Chemistry of the Silica-Organic Compounds, and Bygdens Silizium als Vertreter des Kohlenstoffs organischen Verbindun gen. A more recent and more complete compilation of the literature on organic compounds of silicon would be welcomed by every investigator in the field. Since this work presents a point of view rather than an uncritical compilation of published fact, the author must assume entire responsi bility for the opinions expressed. However, he is greatly indebted to his coworkers iu the research laboratory of the General Electriq Com vii viii PREFACE pany for helpful advice and criticisms. In a larger sense this work is the result of many years of common endeavor in a most interesting field of research. CONTENTS CHAPTER PAGE 1. Book Description

"Peking Man," a cave man once thought a great hunter who had first tamed fire, actually was a composite of the gnawed remains of some fifty women, children, and men unfortunate enough to have been the prey of the giant cave hyena. Researching the famous fossil site of Dragon Bone Hill in China, scientists Noel T. Boaz and Russell L. Ciochon retell the story of the cave's unique species of early human, Homo erectus. Boaz and Ciochon take readers on a gripping scientific odyssey. New evidence shows that Homo erectus was an opportunist who rode a tide of environmental change out Africa and into Eurasia, puddle-jumping from one gene pool to the next. Armed with a shaky hold on fire and some sharp rocks, Homo erectus incredibly survived for over 1.5 million years, much longer than our own species Homo sapiens has been on Earth. Tell-tale marks on fossil bones show that the lives of these early humans were brutal, ruled by hunger and who could strike the hardest blow, yet there are fleeting glimpses of human compassion as well. The small brain of Homo erectus and its strangely unchanging culture indicate that the species could not talk. Part of that primitive culture included ritualized aggression, to which the extremely thick skulls of Homo erectus bear mute witness. Both a vivid recreation of the unimagined way of life of a prehistoric species, so similar yet so unlike us, and a fascinating exposition of how modern multidisciplinary research can test hypotheses in human evolution, Dragon Bone Hill is science writing at its best.

This overview of old history regarding the worlds' most extensive fossil hominid site is great. The sequence of discovery, the loss of the fossils in WWII confusion, and the telling of the modern rethinking of the site and its significance is really very well done.

                      Book Description

The field of superconductivity has tremendous potential for growth and further development in industrial applications. The subject continues to occupy physicists, chemists, and engineers interested in both the phenomena itself and possible financially viable industrial devices utilizing the physical concepts. For the past five years, within the publications of the American Physical Society, for example, 40%-60% of all articles submitted to major journals in the area of Solid State Physics have been on the subject of superconductivity, including the newer, extremely important subfield of high temperature superconductivity (high Tc).

The present volume is the first handbook to address this field. It covers both "classic" superconductivity-related topics and high Tc. Numerous properties, including thermal, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, phase diagrams, and spectroscopic crystallographic structures are presented for many types of superconductors. Critical fields, critical currents, coherence lengths, penetration depths, and transition temperatures are tabulated.

                      Book Description

The discovery of high-temperature superconductors in 1986 by Bednorz and Müller led worldwide to an explosive growth of the field of superconductivity. This new interest extends to both the fundamental aspects and the technological appli- cations of superconductors. The monograph Magnetic Flux Structures in Superconductors provided an introduction to this field, covering the developments up to its first publication in 1979. Soon after 1986 the book went out of print. However, it continues to be widely used and quoted, and due to the ever growing interest in Magnetic Flux Structures in Superconductors, a second edition is now being made available. An extensive new chapter gives a comprehensive review of developments relevant to high-temperature superconductors. This new edition provides researchers, engineers and other scientists with an introduction to this field; it will also be useful as supplementary reading for graduate courses in low-temperature physics.

4 out of 5 stars A useful reference in type II superconductors.......2000-04-12

This book constitutes a standard reference for those who work in scientific and/or technological aspects of type II superconductors. It reviews in a quite condensed fashion a great deal of the present knowledge on the vortex state of type II superconductors, although it does not include the -intensively explored-mixed state of HTc materials. Quite "esoteric" subjects as the Corbino disk, or the influence of contacts in the noise spectra of type II superconductors are presented. Due to the extension of its scope within the field and its conciseness, it constitutes a nice reference book for those who work in type II superconductors. The only practical drawback is that units and notation are sometimes tricky. Other books in its same style, such as "Irreversible properties of type II superconductors" by Ullmaier (1975) might have the same usefulness, though.

                        Book Description

This book is P. W. Anderson's long-awaited full presentation of his theory of high-T c superconductivity in the cuprates. He realized that this striking new phenomenon needed for its explanation not just a new mechanism or "gimmick" but a radical reworking of the electronic theory of metals, especially those of low dimension. The many fundamentally new ideas that are first fully presented here will require a rewriting of the textbooks of many-body theory, which may take decades. The book incorporates full discussions of the experimental situation in these complex materials, both the normal and the superconducting states. The latest advances are contained in a selection of re-and pre-prints of recent work by Anderson and collaborators.

The fundamental insight contained in the book is that the conditions for validity of the renormalized quasiparticle theory of metals ("Fermi Liquid Theory") are much more restrictive than had been thought, and are not satisfied in the CuO 2 planes of high-T c materials (among, probably, many other examples). This requires a new state of matter to be invented, new transport theories, and new mechanisms for superconductivity. This book will supersede all theoretical discussions of superconductivity that are now available in book form.

                            Product Description

Since the 1980s, a general theme in the study of high-temperature superconductors has been to test the BCS theory and its predictions against new data. At the same time, this process has engendered new physics, new materials, and new theoretical frameworks. Remarkable advances have occurred in sample quality and in single crystals, in hole and electron doping in the development of sister compounds with lower transition temperatures, and in instruments to probe structure and dynamics. Handbook of High-Temperature Superconductvity is a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of both experimental and theoretical methodologies by the the world's top leaders in the field. The Editor, Nobel Laureate J. Robert Schrieffer, and Associate Editor James S. Brooks, have produced a unified, coherent work providing a global view of high-temperature superconductivity covering the materials, the relationships with heavy-fermion and organic systems, and the many formidable challenges that remain.

I only got to read this book in a library, but was struck by the practical details. I wish I could afford to buy it. A lot of books science these days are limited to generalities but this book gets down and dirty with specifics. If you want a good book on the modern state of the art in superconductivity, this book is a great choice although it is kind of pricey.

A curious, and humorous foray into the realm of an eccentric tile mason, Bartelme succeeds in welcoming the reader into a world of eccentric socialites, back-handed laborers, and the propensity for unique interaction on the streets of New York. Following O'Rourke, an overweight, Irish, Master Tile Mason/bingedrinker, and his assistant Maurice, the reader becomes privy to the collected recollections of O'Rourke, and the witty responses of his younger assisstant. Over whiskey and brew, they talk and work, theorize and jibe. The pretentious nature of O'Rourke's self indulgent story telling is nullified by the hilarity of his character and drinking problem, to the point where you might just want to grab your self a tall can of St. Ides Malt liquor, get down on your knees with him, and listen in disbelief as you grout a floor. If only my own time as a stone and tile worker was piqued with such entertaining stories, interesting characters, and street-corner philosophy.
