        Book Description

Modern Nonlinear Optics serves as an updated, second edition of volume 85 of the series Advances in Chemical Physics. Utilizing the research of world-renowned experts, Modern Nonlinear Optics presents a dialogue between two prevailing schools of thought: one concerned with quantum optics and Abelian electrodynamics, the other with the emerging subject of non-Abelian electrodynamics and unified field theory. The prevailing paradigm–the Maxwell Heaviside theory–is developed in fields such as quantum optics, antenna theory, and holography, but it is also challenged using general relativity, O(3) electrodynamics, superluminal effects, and several other theories. This wide spectrum of opinion is presented so that a consensus can emerge. In addition, Modern Nonlinear Optics surveys developments over the last ten years, including advances in light squeezing, single photon optics, phase conjunction optics, and laser technology. It reviews thousands of papers emerging from both schools of thought and provides the most up-to-date and complete coverage available.

        5 out of 5 stars Higher-order Symmetry, Non-Abelian Electrodynamics.......2001-12-12

This impressive, 3-book set offers a large number of chapters, covering a wide array of advances in the physics and chemistry of electrodynamics being made by leading researchers from around the world. Individual chapter authors have been carefully selected to ensure authoritative treatment of each topic. Editors Prigogine and Evans have published widely on many of these topics. Of particular note is the more than 600 papers by Dr. Evans on higher-order symmetry, non-Abelian EM, which are referenced throughout this book set. The application of standard gauge theory of high-energy physics to the development of higher-order symmetry, non-Abelian EM is given as a starting point from which derivative developments are explored further in this outstanding book set. Parallel developments embracing the O(3) and SU(2) gauges are presented, indicating many important commonalities and results. In-depth treatment of potential theory is given, including the concept of fieldless EM based solely on potentials. Of major note is the novel development and derivation of higher-order symmetry, non-Abelian EM from the basic Einstein irreps embraced by the Sachs theory of general relativity (GR). It is shown that EM and gravity are both derivative from a common set of irreps in this Sachs-Evans theory. In theory, it is shown as a further derivative from Sachs-Evans that useable energy is possible to be extracted from the "active vacuum" by way of "non-symmetrical regauging." These, among other noteworthy advances, are intellectually refreshing and stimulating and will, no doubt, engender further research and development of computer-hosted simulations and new experiments, many of which are suggested and described, to provide more convincing proof. Industrial applications are further suggested -- such as Radiatively-induced Fermion Resonance (RFR) showing potential performance enhancements for medical and other applications of imaging techniques. Because of the significance of these wide-ranging advances, this 3-book set is highly recommended to all physics and chemistry researchers in academe and industry alike.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Modern Nonlinear Optics - Myron Evans - Volume 85.......2001-12-11

This is an exciting three parts review which introduces the emerging field of non-Abelian electrodynamics and its role in unifield field theory.

Maxwell-Heaviside theory is extended and developed to reveal many new insights. It is shown how in its accepted form this theory, of a hundred or so years, cannot properly explain simple optical and interferometric effects. Non Abelian electrodynamics, however, successfully describes a series of known phenomena and makes new predictions - such as the possibility of extracting energy from the vacuum and the interdependence of electromagnetic and gravitational forces.

The three volumes are well presented and balanced covering the traditional approach and introducing the new theoretical developments from a number of starting points. It is seen how generally they produce the same overall consistent results (which are mostly embodied in a general theory of Mendel Sachs).

Physical consequences are evaluated and supporting experimental evidence reviewed or referenced where it is available.

Aspects of this reviewed work are already being described as landmarks in scientific development.

3 out of 5 stars A good start point for those who want to go beyond HFSCF.......1999-01-18

There have been a few good books covering the basic molecular orbital theory but they offer very little information on how one should deal with structures beyond ground state closed-shell systems. Such problems are commonly known as closed-shell HF-type problems and are only a small fraction of the issues in the electronic strucuture theory. It is impossible to go through graduate school let alone publish papers and win grants with just the HF-type capabilities and one's minimal knowledge today should really include a good grasp on the multiconfigurational thoeries. It is a vast and deep field like others and a compact yet efficient review is very rare indeed. This review should serve as an effective guide to elevate oneself above the closed-shell HF theory, provided that he has acquired sufficient knowledge on the textbook molecular orbital theory and basic linear algebra. Experimental chemists will probably find the material a little indigestable. Recommended for more physics-oriented readers who are prepared to spend time on other references quoted therein, as it is not a self-contained introduction on the multiconfigurational SCF theory.

1 out of 5 stars Genetics is interesting, but this book makes me dread the subject........2007-03-16

The most useful features in this book are "analytical approaches to solving genetics problems" and "questions and problems" at the end of each chapter. Many of the pictures and diagrams are also nice.

However, the writing style tends to be rather dreary and over wordy, which is great for insomniacs, but horrible for those who actually want to learn something. Most of the material is presented in a manner best "learned" by memorization, rather than understanding. As seems to be typical of many biology texts, the "what" is emphasized over the "how" and "why". The sections that approach genetics from a molecular level tend to be better than the others, but the writing style is still too verbose.

Probabilities are treated in a fast and loose manner, but I am willing to concede that such use may be common among geneticists.

I also found several errors and typos in many of the chapters.

I tend to find genetics intrinsically interesting and this book could be worse, but if my only exposure to genetics were through this book, I would probably like the field about as much as I would like to work with potassium cyanide.

5 out of 5 stars Good Text Book.......2005-09-28

I think this is one of my favorite text books that I've encountered to this point. It's wonderfully straight forward and has beautiful diagrams that clearly illustrate the subjects being taught. It's also very nice reading, which is more than I can say about most text books!

                            Book Description

Melissa Thompson's best-selling novel about tortured love and suicide has inspired the mentally unbalanced twenty-four-year-old to do the unthinkable: leave behind her equally crazy best friend, her treasured psychiatrist, and, most importantly, her beloved cat-all in order to find the two men who caused her to write the novel in the first place. Now that she's returned to her hometown to search for school teacher Chaise and ex-boyfriend Oliver, all she has to keep her from losing what little sanity she has left are two pieces of paper and a notebook. As if the lack of familiar things and people isn't enough to petrify even the most normal human being, now Oliver wants to get back together, and Chaise is inviting her over for dinner, and her stupid mouth just can't stay shut...

Wendy Boucher creates a delightfully neurotic main character who, despite her mental anxieties, manages to grab life by the horns and confront her demons. Told in a witty, fast paced style, this book will make you laugh out loud and shake your head and wonder how any of us survived the pitfalls of high school romance--whether we were "normal" or "neurotic". "Open Mouth, Insert Foot" is a wonderful first effort and I hope Ms. Boucher will write another book about Melissa Thompson so we can share her wacky love life and see what adventures she tries on next in her life.
