Book Description
Unifies the complex welter of techniques used for chemical separations by clearly formulating the concepts that are common to them. The mass transport phenomena underlying all separation processes are developed in a simple physical-mathematical form. The limitations and optimum performance of alternative separation techniques and the factors enhancing and limiting separation power can thus be described and explored. Generously illustrated and contains numerous exercises. Long awaited in the scientific community, it breaks new ground in understanding separation processes.

Unified Separation Science Review.......2001-07-31
Is a great book for people starting in any type of separation sciences. It is easy to understand and explains many important concepts that are necessary to understand the chromatographic phenomena.
Very useful and thorough.......1999-04-13
I've used this book in my own research and also in teaching grad level chemical separations course -- an excellent resource. A perfect "career bookend" to Giddings' early work "Dynamics of Chromatography".

Explaining what William McNeill called The Rise of the West has become the central problem in the study of global history. In Guns, Germs, and Steel Jared Diamond presents the biologist's answer: geography, demography, and ecological happenstance. Diamond evenhandedly reviews human history on every continent since the Ice Age at a rate that emphasizes only the broadest movements of peoples and ideas. Yet his survey is binocular: one eye has the rather distant vision of the evolutionary biologist, while the other eye--and his heart--belongs to the people of New Guinea, where he has done field work for more than 30 years.
Book Description
With a new chapter. The phenomenal bestsellerover 1.5 million copies soldis now a major PBS special.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Guns, Germs, and Steel is a brilliant work answering the question of why the peoples of certain continents succeeded in invading other continents and conquering or displacing their peoples. This edition includes a new chapter on Japan and all-new illustrations drawn from the television series.
Until around 11,000 BC, all peoples were still Stone Age hunter/gatherers. At that point, a great divide occurred in the rates that human societies evolved. In Eurasia, parts of the Americas, and Africa, farming became the prevailing mode of existence when indigenous wild plants and animals were domesticated by prehistoric planters and herders. As Jared Diamond vividly reveals, the very people who gained a head start in producing food would collide with preliterate cultures, shaping the modern world through conquest, displacement, and genocide.
The paths that lead from scattered centers of food to broad bands of settlement had a great deal to do with climate and geography. But how did differences in societies arise? Why weren't native Australians, Americans, or Africans the ones to colonize Europe? Diamond dismantles pernicious racial theories tracing societal differences to biological differences.
He assembles convincing evidence linking germs to domestication of animals, germs that Eurasians then spread in epidemic proportions in their voyages of discovery. In its sweep, Guns, Germs and Steel encompasses the rise of agriculture, technology, writing, government, and religion, providing a unifying theory of human history as intriguing as the histories of dinosaurs and glaciers. 32 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Very insightful, a worth while read.......2007-10-06
I highly recommend reading this book. Diamond provides compelling evidence for the disparity between civilizations. Any fan of history or just anyone curious about the rise of our current state will find a great read in Guns, Germs, and Steel.
guns,germs and steel.......2007-10-05
great perspective other than what we in western cultures traditionally have in in our relations with 3rd world countries
Dimly Focused.......2007-09-25
Though erudite and crammed with information, some of it a bit arcane, "Guns, Germs, and Steel"suffers somewhat from a blunted point of view. Is the author trying to tell us that some of our assumptions concerning the rise of cultural norms are over simplified? If so, he might have done so more forcefully with fewer words, more carefully selected facts, and perhaps a more lucid writing style. Do some societies prevail because their native tongue is more efficient and expressive than those employed by other cultures? Following that theme might have made for a more intriguing book. Are there some determinisms at work in every culture which inhibit the fulfillment of its destiny? Maybe the author thinks so, but the massive brush used to paint such a scenario causes the entire work to shimmy through a mass of frequently fascinating material without conclusions. The book's excessive length detracts from its compelling points: we live, some of the time, at the mercy of gigantic forces we do not control. Do genetics control our formation, or climate, or enormous economic systems? And who can give us convincing answers? Anthropologists, sociologists, and psychologists of course come to mind. But what of poets, seers, artists, and theologians? Maybe Jared Diamond knows, but by the time he finishes inundating us with facts, some slightly pretentious, it's hard to tell for sure. I had hoped this book's scope and claim would give convincing guidance. But because it lacks definite focus, it did not.
Guns Germs and Steel review.......2007-09-24
This is an excellent book, the hypothesis is very compelling and interesting. I watched the DVD in addition to the book and I was not disappointed at all. Worth the read!
A modern, scientific "just so" story.......2007-09-23
One of the most important books of our time; it single-handedly wipes out every justification for racism, and gets to the roots of why humans groups are where they are presently. An amazing synthesis of disciplines into one very readable explanation of how it came to pass that Europeans happened to be the ones that colonized the rest of the planet instead of some other group. The most clear example I've ever seen of why archaeology, and all the social sciences are not only important but vital to modern people. The better our understanding of the past the more likely we are to be able to let go of the emotionality that keeps us at each other's throats. A modern "just so" story.

Product Description
Spending quality time with your children, at any age, is one of the great pleasures of parents and grandparents everywhere. Weekends, holidays and family nights out are those special times that everyone reminisces about for a lifetime. And then there is summer--long days at the beach or pool, family vacations, lazy days with family and friends. This all sounds great until you realize there is just too much summer, too much leisure time and too many children hanging around the house complaining they are bored. In this wonderfully creative and thoughtful book, author Ann Kepler helps beleaguered moms and dads fill the long void of summer vacations with enjoyable, entertaining and (dare to mention) educational activities designed to thoroughly engage both children and parents.

The San Juan Islands in Washington State come alive in That Summer Place, an anthology set on fictional Spruce Island. In "Old Things" by Jill Barnett, California divorceé Catherine Winslow seeks to recreate the magic of her childhood with her two daughters on the island where her family spent many happy summers. She has no idea that she is about to revive a teenage romance as well.
In Debbie Macomber's "Private Paradise," widow Beth Graham is invited to stay on an island with friends. But when a last-minute accident keeps her friends from the island, Beth and her son end up sharing quarters with a handsome single father, John Livingstone, and his teenage daughter. Close quarters cause tempers to flare, but Beth and John just may manage to find love before the trip is over.
"Island Time" by Susan Wiggs finds workaholic Mitch Rutherford and Dr. Rosalinda Galvez busily conducting an environmental impact study of the island, although Mitch wonders if he will ever get anything done with the beautiful doctor around.
Barnett's trademark humor, Macomber's poignancy, and Wiggs's expert storytelling all combine to create the perfect summer beach book. --Maudeen Wachsmith
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful reading.......2007-01-09
I was unable to put the book down. As always Debbie Macomber is a wonderful author.
Magical setting!.......2005-08-18
This was a great summer read. The wonderful descriptions of the Pacific Northwest had me going online to research my dream vacation! If magical, serene, outdoorsy settings are important to you, this is the book for you! I especially enjoyed the stories by Jill Barnett and Susan Wiggs.
Great Book!.......2001-01-20
This book includes three stories all revolving around one location, San Juan Islands in Washington State. One author started the stories by setting the scene, then two other authors continued with Debbie Macomber's story in the middle. I have enjoyed much of Macomber's work, so I selected this novel to a quick summer read. I truely enjoyed the combinations of the three authors, and all three stories were enchanting.
Skip the Summer Place.......2000-08-17
This review is for the Audio version. I would not recommend this tape to anyone! The narrarators are soooo dramatic - for instance in the first story ( I can't even remember the title, it was so bad) the person reading the story emphasises every last word of the sentence, whispers and has to take a breath every few words. It is very annoying. I couldn't listen to any more than 20 minutes of the story - that's how bad she got on my nerves. The second story was not much better - she should have skipped the accent and I was disapointed in the storyline - Susan Wiggs is usually much better.
Maybe reading the book instead of listening would make a difference. But I will never know because there is no way I would waste more money on these short stories.
Summer Sizzles, Seethes, and does the Macarena.......1998-10-06
Putting authors Jill Barnett, Susan Wiggs and Debbie Macomber together at Rainshadow Lodge was a brilliant idea - and what a gift for readers. For three women, Catherine Winslow, Beth Graham, and Dr. Rosalinda Galvez, the old Victorian summer house on a remote island in Puget Sound is a sanctuary, a place to draw a deep breath, rest, re-evaluate their lives, and heal. None of them expected to find love. For Catherine, love comes packaged in the shape of her first love - and wow, have the years been good to him! Rosalinda discovers a workaholic boss that needs shaking up - so she teaches him the Macarena and raises his blood pressure. Beth finds a man whose teen-age daughter just may give them both grey hairs before they get around to saying "I love you".
These may be stories set in a summer place, but they'll keep you awake, smiling, any time of the year.
Book Description
Whether your summer house is a beachside bungalow, a lakeside cottage, or a year-round retreat, cooking for family and friends while on vacation can be a delight—if you know how to keep it simple.
The Summer House Cookbook has all of the tips, tricks, and recipes guaranteed to make summertime cooking a breeze.
Rather than stocking a vacation home with a full array of spices, whip up a couple “make-to-take” infused oils, marinades, and spice blends to bring along—they’ll give instant, effortless flavor to meats and fish. Save time in the kitchen by cleverly dressing up leftovers—turn extra roast chicken into Tarragon Tree Chicken Salad, and grilled flank steak into a great sandwich with some Balsamic-Marinated Red Onions. From crowd-pleasing recipes such as Picnic Basket Fried Chicken, Memorial Day Coleslaw, and Bar Harbor Lobster Cakes to sophisticated offerings like Charred Pesto Shrimp and Grilled Lamb Chops with Olive Butter, these dishes require nothing more than the basic equipment available in even a bare-bones kitchen.
The Summer House Cookbook is filled with great ways to enjoy the pleasures of the season. Share a big pitcher of margaritas and a bowl of Best-Ever Guacamole with friends, or celebrate summer produce with Fourth of July Strawberry Shortcakes and Perfect Peach Pie.
Filled with evocative photographs and the stove-side advice of two friends who love to cook together,
The Summer House Cookbook is all you need to create delicious food in any kitchen.

Fussy, Fussy, Fussy!.......2006-07-07
I was excited to find a book filled with fun, fresh summer ideas but one look inside and I was so disappointed. The premise of the book is fresh, easy meals that appeal in those lazy summer days and nights yet the book is filled with not terribly interesting, not terribly difficult but very fussy meals. Who needs that in the summer? and who needs this book -- certainly not me!
Just not for me.......2004-04-20
I have to tell you for the average midwest simple minded cook, this is not the book for me. I was pretty disappointed when I received the book as a gift. The recipes seem to be to involved and high maintence ingredience. I think this book is more for the expreinced gourmet cook than us simple minded ones.
Lightening Up Summer Cuisine.......2004-04-19
This is an approach that one would think other cookbooks deliver also, that of a summer style menu which eases up on the tedious prep work and makes placing enticing food before family and friends easy and yet delectable.
They do, but here is a specialty cookbook which centers only on this aspect: light summer cusine.
These two experienced chefs achieve their stated purpose by providing lots of recipes both of the standard recipe fare and some unique ones as well. They begin with a superb section on "Getting Ready to Go" which provides hints that truly prepare one to get all the gear and chef tools and ingredients ready to take or find and purchase whether to stock the summer abode or take to a rental or one's own backyard cooking. There is also a "Make Ahead" section with oils and marinades, etc. which is truly a neat idea to achieve the desired: "summer state of mind."
The recipe groupings are around meals, i.e. breakfast, picnics, dinners, parties, rainy days and then around source: farm stand, dock, grill, and desserts.
My two favorites thus far are "From the Dock" and "Rainy Day Dinners." Feast your eyes and appetites on such as: Sea Bright Striped Bass" with peach, nectarine, and plum balsamic vinegar sauce; Malibu Soft-Shell Crab Salad with watermelon, fennel, arugala and orange salad; Sweet Corn Pudding; Lobster, Mushroom and Sweet Pea Risotto; Chilled White Peach Soup with Red Wine Ice; Fig and Raspbery Fool.
Well done with delightful text bolstered with superb color photos. Also, not thick, heavy book it packs and travels well.
The ultimate cookbook!!.......2003-10-15
It's now Autumn, but this book will be used year round in our kitchen. I used the "Only Pie Crust Recipe You'll Ever Need" in this book. It was right! The results were a light, flaky crust. I used it for an apple pie. All I heard from the kitchen table were moans and groans. What a reward that was!
I highly recommend this book for the crust and all other recipes! "MMMMMMM!"
Perfect for the summer and year 'round.......2003-06-06
Healthy, natural, and easy. This book puts the fun back into cooking at a time of year when there are so many other things to do. Starting the day with Lemon Blueberry Muffins followed at lunch with Jerssey Corn chowder, convinced me that this is a cookbook that will be always be open when I want my family to have wonderful food while I have the time to participate in their summer fun.

Book Description
Fifteen-year-old Georgia is obsessed with the lead singer of Natural Affinity and will do anything it takes to see him live. But there is one major obstacle standing in her way: money. To earn some extra cash, she takes on a string of disastrous jobs. Georgia also struggles with her weight, slipping grades, her lack of a boyfriend, and the distance growing between her and her best friend. Add to all that the tension with her mother, and life really starts to get complicated. True to Brigid Lowrys colorful style of writing, the book is peppered with lists Georgia writes in her diary, like Ten things you can do with a sausage besides eating it and Great email addresses. Georgia is funny, honest, far from perfect, and will win the hearts of readers everywhere.

It gets better...........2006-04-26
I first read this book because I loved Guitar Highway Rose and Follow the Blue. The beginning was a bit disappointing, and I worried that it could never measure up to the other two books I've come to love. However, from the middle or so on, the novel improved greatly, and by the end I was once again a believer in Brigid Lowry's amazing writing skills.
While I still like GHR best, and this one possibly the least of the 3, this is still an amazing book. I'm not sure any book could've measure up to my high expectations, but this one came close.
If you liked her other books, you'll probably like this one too.
The basic synopsis is a girl, overly concious of her weight, trying to get a job to earn money for a concert. Along the way, Georgia gains and loses many things in her life, and her plans change along the way. A fiesty teenager who often says and does innappropriate things, Georgia is a vivacious and interesting protagonist, creating quite an interesting story.
Recommended as a feel-good book for any teenager aprox. ages 13-16
Things You Either Hate or Love.......2006-04-07
The book was okay but my main problem was the cover. One of the main concerns for Georgia is that she is "overweight" but the cover shows a girl who is in no way overweight. This plays right into the insecurities of teenage girls who will look at this cover and say to themselves, well if this represents what the public thinks as overweight then I REALLY need to lose weight. The story never really made a mark on me especially after seeing the cover and being irate at what is considered "overweight."

Book Description
The 56 poems in the collection are grouped under five headings: People, Creatures, Living and Partly Living, Places and Stories.
The "People" include a bookworm who dumps his books and opts for a blonde in his old age; a suicide (why?); a dying man who puts the chance of singing above the chance of survival; a man whose self-imposed function in life is to lead out on foot every funeral cortege through his town; an old woman who plays her squeeze box at a wedding reception, unheard and unheeded; a cyclist, a beachcomber and a boy dead at eleven.
The "Creatures" include a caterpillar, a kingfisher like a piece of glass from Chartres, a cormorant who in the timeless minds of schoolboys sets world records, a stray cat and a ladybird who reminds the poet of a dancer in armour in a Greek theatre.
The "Living and Partly Living" section is about the ups and downs of life: everything from whiskey punch and sunbathing and sailing in a tall ship to loneliness and the pain of loss and a prison moon and a leper Mass.
The "Places", all in Ireland, include a horsefair at Ballabuidhe, a Station Mass in Heir Island, Kinsale before the tourists besieged it, Mayo on Garland Sunday and a country road where the black-and-white cottages play dominoes.
And the "Stories" range from a well in Peru and a silenced priest to Cuthbert the monk who vigilled with otters and the homage expected form Irish tenants by Lord Ventry for his horses.
Every human emotion is articulated: anger, despair, sadness, mirth, love, empathy, amazement, disgust, veneration, gratitude and an unbounded delight in God's creation.
If, as 'tis said, imagery is the lifeblood of poetry, these poems pulse with it.

5 stars for the historic value only.......2007-04-23
In 1984 the IBM PC was brand-new, and this was one of the first and better books on how to exploit its capabilities. The authors talk about the ideas of using a home computer for the purposes of home business management, game playing, and education as though they have discovered America, and it is all very humorous to look back on. The book provides actual code-listings on how to write the programs that produce the applications that the book discusses. Remember, there was no software you could just go out and buy for these purposes - you had to roll your own. Both authors were programmers and free-lance writers at the time this book was published, so both the code and the text are well written. The following is the table of contents:
