A Wonderful Book to Plan For Bird Trips.......2006-03-01

This book was better than what I had expected. I am getting ready to order several more for birding friends. I was not under the impression that is was an identification guide when I first bought the book and it isn't. But, it does tell me what to study before I travel to the very descriptive destinations.

I cannot wait for the weekend to try birding in another area close to home.

Not an ideal reference or field guide.......2003-01-12

I've used the guide to help plan three birding trips so far and found it to be an asset in preparing for the trip (e.g., understanding the location, what species to expect, and best time to go). Upon arrival at the site, I found myself using a field guide like NGS's Field Guide to Birds of North America almost exclusively to help sight and identify the birds.

Birding Northern California is not suitable as a true field guide since it lacks detailed graphics or photos of the close to 600 species that can be found here. While using the book, I also found the book to be "too wordy" to use as a reference. For instance, to find the best location in Northern California to view a Ross's Goose in December, you would need to browse a good chunk of the book before finding a spot (and it might not be the best location). Later I discovered handy reference information in the very back of the text (e.g., Chapter 7 provides a breakdown of "specialty birds" throughout the area with their respective ranges mapped for winter and summer). FYI - the Ross's Goose is included in Chapter 7 with the key sites. The last chapter of the book provides a complete listing, including specialty and more common birds, with a geographic region and month of the year to look for the bird.

Given the room for improvement in the book's organization, I would encourage the publisher/author to produce a 2nd edition. The ideal improvement would be to include a CDROM that structures the information by bird species (hey, a photo would be nice), the locations where the bird can be found with a relative ranking, the time of year (again with some form of ranking). Including a CD would also allow the reader to search over the information by species or location.

Birding Northern California.......2001-05-11

I ordered this for use in my daughter's 6th grade science class in Oakland. Unfortunately, it contains no photographs of the birds--only text descriptions of viewing locations. So it's not useful as an identification guide. The general description should clearly state this. JM

Saving our north west forests.......2004-01-19

This is not a new book but the subject matter - the need for the preservation of forests along the north west coast of North America - is as relevant and important now as it was then. Looking back, it's encouraging to see that we have made some progress towards this since 1996, even if it is progress of the "two steps forward, one step back variety".

This beautifully illustrated book consists of five essays, one for each of the geographical regions from northern California to south eastern Alaska. The five writers offer very different perspectives on the ecological issues facing the forests in their own area. Each essay, in its own way, addresses issues common to the whole region. The book in its entirety looks at the past of these forests and offers a look at the future. In 2004 we are eight years into that future so we can compare our progress, or lack thereof, with the hopes expressed.

This book tries to engage us, as readers, to understand and treasure our forests for what they are and not just for the wood or wealth they provide. "...the more we humans know, the more we will care, and the more we care the better will we take care."

Amen to that.

The Best Little Guidebook Ever.......2003-05-04

Part natural history, part local history, and chock full of fascinating details about Redwood National and State Parks, this is the guidebook to get for the Northern California Coast. I purchased it primarily as a hiking guide for the all too brief period I first spent in the Park, but have enjoyed reading it ever since.

The book covers Native American peoples of the region, the history of conservation efforts to save the Redwoods, and provides detailed descriptions for those who want an "auto tour" through the park. But the most enjoyable aspects of the book for me were the many sidebars within the text and their selection of hiking trails. The sidebars deal mostly with local history, and are written with a healthy dose of humor. Indeed, such titles as "The State of Jefferson: Not just a jest" and "Big Diamond: The Prehistoric Pachyderm of Prarie Creek" are so enjoyable that they deserve a separate book in their own right. The selection of hikes the Rohde's offer is also excellent. These parks offer lots of hiking opportunities, but they have picked the best of bunch, a real help to visitors with a strict time budget.

If you're looking for a book on birds, this item isn't it! I thought I was getting a book. It appeared to be advertised as a book. But, it's just a laminated picture guide of birds.

This book has 120 plates of wildflowers and includes a paragraph for each one describing common as well as scientific names. It highlights regions and specific habitats where the flowers can be found. It is organized by plant families and includes space for readers to put their observations and sightings.
