Handbook for Chemistry Teachers.......2006-12-26
This is one of those books that people in "the know" know about. It was recommended to me while in graduate school and I continue to recommend it to others. I'd say that it's suitable for either a teacher just about to teach chemistry for the first time, and also suitable for an experienced professor who may need an introduction into "educational" lingo. I find it helpful on many levels, including a reminder of how students think, where they tend to have problems (and why), and tips on helping students over those hurdles. While it is a decade old, this book is written by one of the "big whigs" of chemical education. I continue to find it a worthwhile read.
Book Description
Fundamentals of Natural Gas Processing explores the natural gas industry from the wellhead to the marketplace. It compiles information from the open literature, meeting proceedings, and experts to accurately depict the state of gas processing technology today and highlight technologies that could become important in the future. This book covers advantages, limitations, and ranges of applicability of major gas plant processes to provide a sound understanding from system fundamentals to selection, operation, and integration into the overall gas plant. It also describes the major operations involved in bringing the gas to the plant, information not usually discussed in most gas processing books. Comprehensive chapters cover field operations, inlet receiving, compression, dehydration, hydrocarbon recovery, nitrogen rejection, liquids processing, sulfur recovery, and the increasingly popular liquefied natural gas industry, focusing on liquefaction, storage, and transportation. The book also discusses plant economics, offering ways to make initial cost estimates of selected processes and determine capital costs of gas processing facilities. The descriptive approach in Fundamentals of Natural Gas Processing makes this comprehensive text and reference well suited for both technical and non-technical personnel in the industry including chemical or mechanical engineers, plant engineers, students, and those who are new to the field.

Revenge of the Whale.......2006-04-27
This book is an interesting book. In this book the main characters are Thomas Nickerson a cabin boy aboard the whale ship Essex, the first mate Owen Chase, and the captain George Pollard Jr. This book starts out in a place in New England called Nantucket. Then as the book progresses the rest of the book pretty much takes place on the sea.
This book is an interesting book because it is interesting to learn about whaling. One thing that amazed me was how dangerous whaling could be. It sounded not only dangerous, but a job that required a lot of skill. If you like whaling stories this is the right book for you. If you are a person who likes survival stories this is a great book for you. Also if you like stories that take place at sea this is also the perfect book for you. This book was adapted from the National Book Award-Winner In the Heart of the Sea. So, if you like the book in the heart of the sea I would advise this book.

Revenge Of The Whale.......2006-04-27
The book that I read was "Revenge Of The Whale" by Nathaniel Philbrick. I thought that this book was ok because it was very suspencful, scary, a little of humor, and gory. I discovered reading this book that I feel bad about what we have done in the past to the whales.
This book is about a crew member on the boat Essex his name was Thomas Nickerson. Thomas Nickerson is the cabin boy on the boat. The fact that he got a chance to fo whaling was the most exciting thing in his life. He is also the youngest crew member and also the youngest out of the few people that survived the attack of a sperm whale. He is far away from home in the middle of the ocean with nothing to eat the only thing he had was a little boat the big sea and hope. Will hope help him though? How will he survive?
This book makes you feel as if you are standing in the eyes of young Nickerson. Very adventuros book filled with suspence, action, and sadness. This nook is very simular to "I The Heart Of The Sea." I would recomend this book to somone who likes scary books. I hope you like this book and have a fun time reading it!

A Review of Revenge of the Whale.......2006-04-26
"All aboard the Essex," with George Pallard as your Captain. The crew members will be staying out on sea for almost two years. The crew of the Essex is sailing, looking for whales, but having a little trouble with that until they spot a Sperm whale. Little did they know that that whale could cost the crew their lives.
The Sperm whale has attacked their ship and forced all of the men to divide up and live for two or more months on little whaling boats. The crew is left with only 3 pounds of hardtack a day and only half a pint of water. All the men are struggling to stay alive, there is soon cannibalism and not enough water to keep the crew living. None of the men know what is going to happen next.
The author gives alot of detail with his writing. There are parts in this book that i did not like very much; the starving, the blood and gore, and the act of cannibalism. I also felt
bad and sorry for what happens to the crew aboard the Essex. You would enjoy this book if you like true stories out on the sea. If you like survival stories, you would also like this book. It was a long ride aboard the Essex but now they are coming home.

Revenge of the Whale.......2006-04-26
Revenge of the Whale is a book about the "Essex", a whaling ship in the early 1820s.
Thomas Nickerson is a 14-year-old boy that lives on the small island of Nantucket, right off of Cape Cod. He decides that he is going to go on his first whaling journey on the "Essex", under the command of George Pollard jr., the Captain, Owen Chase, the first mate, and Matthew Joy, the second mate.
After a series of unlucky events, Thomas Nickerson, Owen Chase, and a few other crew members find themselves in the middle of the Pacific ocean being attacked by a Male, 80-ton Sperm whale. The whale rammed the "Essex" twice leaving it on it's side.
Once the rest of the crew comes back from the whale they were hunting, they decide to try and sail for any land. Once they gather what provisions they could find, they set sail in three small whaleboats.
George Pollard jr. and Owen Chase decide not to sail to the closest islands, the Society Islands, in fear of cannibals, and instead sail South then East, to get the South American Coast. The boats soon start to run out of food, and the only way to survive may be to consume their fallen comrades.
This Book is a true story of 20 sailors and their struggle for life at sea. I thought this book was very interesting since it was a true story. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes realistic and intense survival stories.

In his entertaining adventure-in-whale-researching, Fluke, or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings, Nathan Quinn, a prominent marine biologist, has been conducting studies in Hawaii for years trying to unravel the secret of why humpback whales sing. During a typical day of data gathering, Nate believes his mind is failing: the subject whale has "Bite Me" scrawled across its tail. Events become even stranger as the self-proclaimed "action nerds," Nate, photographer Clay, their research assistant Amy, and Kona, a white Rasta (a Jewish kid from New Jersey), encounter sabotage to their data and equipment. They also observe increasingly bizarre whale behavior, including a phone call from the whale to their wealthy sponsor to ask that Nate bring it a hot pastrami and Swiss on rye, and discover both a thriving underwater city and the secret to what happened to Amelia Earhart.
Thoughtful, irreverent, and often hilarious, Moore has crafted a tale that contains a bit of the saga of declining whale populations due to hunting and habitat destruction, as well as his over-the-top, decadent wit as applied to scientific methodology and professional jealousies. Moore notes a pasty, rival scientist "looked like Death out for his after-dinner stroll before a busy night of e-mailing heart attacks and tumors to a few million lucky winners," and that killer whales (which are all named Kevin), are "just four tons of doofus dressed up like a police car." Smart, sincere, and a whale of a story, Fluke is terrific. --Michael Ferch
Book Description
After reverently lambasting the most cherished rites and credos of virtually every one of the world's major religions in his transcendently hilarious novel Lamb, the one and only Christopher Moore returns with a wild look at interspecies communication, adventure on the high seas, and an eons-old mystery.
Marine behavioral biologist Nate Quinn is in love -- with the salt air and sun-drenched waters off Maui ... and especially with the majestic ocean-dwelling behemoths that have been bleeping and hooting their haunting music for more than twenty million years. But just why do the humpback whales sing? That's the question that has Nate and his crew poking, charting, recording, and photographing any large marine mammal that crosses their path. Until the extraordinary day when a whale lifts its tail into the air to display a cryptic message spelled out in foot-high letters: Bite me.
No one on Nate's team has ever seen such a thing; not his longtime partner, photographer Clay Demodocus, not their saucy young research assistant, Amy. Not even spliff-puffing white-boy Rastaman, Kona (the former Preston Applebaum of New Jersey), could boast such a sighting in one of his dope-induced hallucinations. And when a roll of film returns from the lab missing the crucial tail shot -- and their research facility is summarily trashed -- Nate realizes that something very fishy indeed is going on.
This, apparently, is big, involving dangerously interested other parties -- competitive researchers, the cutthroat tourist industry, perhaps even the military. The weirdness only gets weirder when a call comes in from Nate's big-bucks benefactor saying that a whale has made contact -- by phone. And it's asking for a hot pastrami and Swiss on rye. Suddenly the answer to the question that has daunted and driven Nate throughout his adult life is within his reach. But it's waiting for him in the form of an amazing adventure beneath the waves, 623 feet down, somewhere off the coast of Chile. And it's not what anyone would think.
It must be said: Christopher Moore's Fluke is a whale of a novel.

"
Just why do humpback whales sing? That's the question that has marine behavioral biologist Nate Quinn and his crew poking, charting, recording, and photographing very big, wet, gray marine mammals. Until the extraordinary day when a whale lifts its tail into the air to display a cryptic message spelled out in foot-high letters: Bite me.
Trouble is, Nate's beginning to wonder if he hasn't spent just a little too much time in the sun. 'Cause no one else on his team saw a thing -- not his longtime partner, Clay Demodocus; not their saucy young research assistant; not even the spliff-puffing white-boy Rastaman Kona (né Preston Applebaum). But later, when a roll of film returns from the lab missing the crucial tail shot -- and his research facility is trashed -- Nate realizes something very fishy indeed is going on.
By turns witty, irreverent, fascinating, puzzling, and surprising, Fluke is Christopher Moore at his outrageous best.

What a weird strange trip.......2007-08-01
I've only recently discovered the writings of Christopher Moore, but I'm now on a quest to read all of his books, and I can't tell you why. They are all uniquely quirky and funny. Each of his novels is a fairly quick read with a love story, a mystery, and some sort of paranormal element thrown in for good measure.
His style of writing makes his books so easy to digest. You don't have to think, just giggle.
I started out by reading "LAMB" and actually 'learned' some religous history. I found his account fascinating and exciting. It led me to want to read more of his writings, and I've been glad that I have.
Fluke is a great book, but its premise starts to get a little strange. If I want to start thinking about my impact on the planet, I stick to "ISHMAEL".
I recommend Christopher Moore as an author and this book as a second or third book of his to pick-up. To get a flavor for his work, start out with "YOU SUCK - A LOVE STORY" and then either this or "LAMB".
Laugh and learn about sea mammals.......2007-07-28
Christopher Moore cracks me up.
His absurd humor is addicting.
Get the audio book and you can laugh while driving.
3 1/2 stars would be more accurate.......2007-05-30
For anyone looking for a break from the mundane, cliche novels that are out there, then Christopher Moore will certainly fit the bill; and Fluke is no exception. The story is of a whale biologist and his eventful (and unbelievable) research in Hawaii. Of course, Moore's insane and inane plot devolves from there.
Although this book delivered a few laughs, I did not find it nearly as funny as "A Dirty Job" (although Moore's comments on "advanced poop-chute technology" should not be missed).
The plot overall is as crazy and unexpected as you would expect from Moore, but seems to drag a little toward the end. Also, I was not terribly happy with the resolution of everything.
The characters are very likeable, but do not seem to do much growing over the course of the novel.
Fluke is worth checking out if you are a fan of Moore's, or if you have some free time on your hands, but you may be better off getting it at the library.
Fluke.......2007-04-12
My husband and I listened to this on vacation in San Diego. We spent alot of time on the freeways. Fluke kept us laughing and entertained the whole time!
great.......2007-03-31
I liked this book so much I've now read several more of his. This one is still the best so far. Clever, fun, fast paced, unpredictable! I recommend it highly.
Book Description
This book of short essays, each accompanied by a track on the enclosed CD, introduces the universal qualities of soundmaking and listening. Wide-ranging and accessible, themes include biology, personal reflection, deep ecology musings and social context; Dunn's sudden kernals of sythesis and insight show how sound offers connection with nature, and ourselves, in profoundly direct ways.
Customer Reviews:
Why Do Authors Write?.......2006-04-05
David Dunn has a fairly distinguished reputation as a field recordist, a phonographer, a collector and manipulator of sounds. His ear is attuned to sounds normal people can't hear, or overlook in their haste. He tends to be a miniaturist.
A book on his recording experiences and techniques is not out of the realm of interest, therefore. This book, illustrated with a 40-track CD, explains a fair bit about where and how each recording was made.
But it fails to answer, or even address, the questions of the book's title. Why DO whales sing? Why DO children sing? For the same reasons, presumably, that authors write books. Dunn has a predictable point to make -- diminishing habitat, human noise pollution, complexity of nature, blah-blah-blah -- but mostly this too-slim volume is an excuse to present some cool recordings (alas, also way too short!) and talk about them. Briefly.
The entire package is very reminiscent of Bernie Krause's "Wild Soundscapes" book + CD, although it predates it by 3 years!
Book Description
Can whales communicate across miles of vast ocean? Can elephants talk to one another with sounds we cannot hear? These are the kinds of questions that drive the work of acoustic biologists. Follow three creative scientistsChristopher W., Clark, Katy Payne, and Bill Evansas they research why and how animals communicate. Through remarkable photographs and stories about all sorts of animals, this book celebrates the challenges of lab work and fieldwork and the thrill of discovery.

The Secrets of Sound.......2003-10-04
April Pulley Sayre's Secrets of Sound is an invaluable resource for teachers. It is packed with information yet engagingly written. Not only does the book provide a fresh look at whales, elephants, and migratory birds, but also at the scientists who study these creatures. This behind-the-scenes peek into the lifestyles of these scientists may motivate children to explore a scientific career. At the end of each section, Sayre brings out the conservation effots of the featured scientist. This book on bioacoustics supports curriculum standards which require children to understand the physics of sound. Fine photos bring the text to life.
