Book Description

In their professional dreams, chemistry teachers imagine eager and self-sufficient students whose curiosity motivates their scientific explorations. Joan Gallagher-Bolos and Dennis Smithenry have realized this vision in their chemistry classrooms, and in Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry, they demonstrate how you can make student-led inquiry happen in yours.

Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry retraces an entire year's curriculum to show you how the authors weave constructivist theory into every lesson without sacrificing content. You will discover how slowly increasing the complexity of projects while gradually shifting the responsibility for learning to class members builds success upon success until students are ready to formulate and execute a three-week, end-of-year project where they function as a fully independent scientific community. Plus Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry is loaded with features that help you implement student-centered teaching immediately, including:

Get ready to make your ideal classroom a reality and find a fresh way of teaching the chemistry you know so well. 1 out of 5 stars Doesn't help.......2007-07-09

I just starting teaching introductory Chemistry at a university. Many students do not participate during lecture and do not complete the course with a satisfactory grade. I thought this book would help me foster independent learning in my course. If this is what is taught in high school, then this is one of the problems (lack of preparation for college). The examples are more pertinent for a junior-high basic science class. I do see the importance of learning social skills, but the book lacks content for teaching chemistry. What were once called laboratory exercises are now called inquiry-based scientific communities. Beware of books with too many exclamation points in the text!!!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book.......2006-05-26

I enjoyed this book completely and plan to use it to revamp the way that I teach Chemistry. I love the way that the authors lay out how to create a community in the classroom gradually throughout the school year. The most interesting thing about this book to me is that, while there are many books about inquiry and about grouping students for learning, this is the first book that really described for me how to create a community of learners (whole class) that is self-directed in doing science. I can't wait to try out the ideas in my own classroom next year.

3 out of 5 stars Could be useful in right situation.......2005-08-12

When I bought the book I was hoping for a bunch of labs involving inquiry based chemistry and some key points on how to incorporate inquiry based chemistry in my class. Though the book did give some suggestions on how to implement it, it did not offer a wealth of ready to use activities. I thought it focued too much on how they came up with inquiry chemistry in their class and not enough time on activities and a step by step approach on how to begin a inquiry chemistry curriculum. It wasnt too useful to me but some people may find it useful.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2004-10-12

this book is awesome!! as a potential future educator reading about the authors first hand experience with creative teaching methods is inspiring. the only thing that could be more inspiring than the teachers are the students and how they took charge of the classroom. . no actually it's the teachers in this book that illustrate how creative teaching can bring out hidden potential in and change the lives of students. . . (shout out to 6-7B n EBAP!! =)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2001-07-11

This is the story of Marco Polo, told with a poets ear.
Frutkin uses this most interesting of historical figures
to explore what it means to be human. (No pun intended.)
Though this is a fictional account, I feel closer to
Polo than any sterile account could have taken me. This
story is filled with magic, and all connected to the
statue of the winged Lion of Venice that guards
Marco Polo's hometown. To Marco, the Lion is real,
a fiece guardian guiding him in times of danger.
And there is plenty of danger for a traveler in the 13th Century.
From desert sand storms to distrustful natives,
Marco sees it all. Marco Polo's journey from Venice to
China and back to Venice again took almost a quarter of a
century. He saw amazing sights, he endured illness and
difficult traveling conditions. And he lived to tell his
tale. And oh what a telling it is. I was hooked from
the first word to the last. I could have read this
book in a day, but instead I took a month in hopes
of savoring every turn of phrase and every image Frutkin
evokes. In my family there is a waiting list to read
this book, and the list keeps growing. Get this book
and you will not be disapointed.

    Book Description

Over the last decade the field of spaceborne imaging radar remote sensing has advanced to the point where many new applications have become possible. Synthetic aperture radar with its all-weather and day-night capability has become one of the most sophisticated technologies for earth and planetary observation. The deployment of advanced experimental systems has allowed radar imaging data to feed into the analysis of environmental and geophysical problems: whether agricultural, land use, forestry, hydrology, geology, mineral exploration, urbanization, archaeology, natural hazards, oceanography or global change. This atlas provides a set of examples of high quality remote sensing work carried out with this leading technology in China, under the auspices of the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in collaboration with the USA, European Space Agency, Japan and the former USSR. These examples are discussed, compared with ground truth, and analyzed. It includes applications, data analysis, algorithm development, modeling and backscatter behavior analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Puts it all together: excellent overview for beginners.......2003-10-28

I have been making web pages for quite a while, trying to figure it all out myself from scratch. I wish I had had this book. It is very practical with lots of screen shots. Whereas I have been feeling that web design is a complicated field, after browsing through this book I think maybe it is not that hard after all. Nettleton puts it all together in a great overview. Now that it is more and more common for everyone to be familiar with web design, it is as if he has picked out the most important elements and left out all the unnecessary growing pains.

I think I have looked at many web design books and this one really summarizes all the basics: what is html, software, hosting, ftp, site planning, how to organize your files, how to use tables, making a layout, designing for screen resolutions, graphics, buttons, icon graphics, templates, navigation. And it doesn't stop there: rollovers, slices, linking, library items, frames, animation, actions, flash, sound & video. And for power users: forms, style sheets, behaviors and actions, and finally, going live and how to improve traffic to your site.

The subjects are all too familiar for experienced web designers -and of course: covering all these subjects in 224 pages cannot go very in depth. But all his examples are simple and clear, and Nettleton lays down an excellent map for further exploration.
It inspires me to use the book for teaching purposes and of course it will go to my kids when I am done with it.

There is one point to note: The book relies mostly on Dreamweaver or Adobe's Golive for web authoring, and mostly on all the other more expensive software choices.
And it is true that the title is a little presumptuous, the book at least inspires to reach for that goal. Just keep working at it.

4 out of 5 stars For those interested in expanding beyond a basic website!.......2002-11-14

In "How to Design and Build the Coolest Web Site in Cyberspace", Nick Nettleton does an excellent job of introducing a fairly new web site creator the ins and outs of building a website beyond what one can do with simple HTML or FrontPage. While the title might be stretching it a bit far, the book has tons of colorful screenshots to explain each concept and tip. This isn't neccessarily a tutorial book -- though there are simple examples of neat tricks included -- it does provide some good ideas, tips and examples for a person new to web design on how to create a better website. Experienced users will get little from this book except for the random tip, but this is a great book for a beginner that wants to go to the next level. Best part about this book is the price. Less than $20 US. Quite the deal in this age of overpriced computer books!
