Book Description
The Fifth Edition of this accurate and well-tested lab manual contains 15 general chemistry and 20 organic/biochemistry safety-scale laboratory experiments. The experiments are designed to use small quantities of chemicals and emphasize safety and proper disposal of materials. 'Safety-scale' is the authors' own term for describing the amount of chemicals each lab experiment requires--less than macroscale quantities, which are expensive and hazardous, and more than microscale quantities, which are difficult to work with and require special equipment. This lab manual provides a unique blend of laboratory skills and exercises that effectively illustrate concepts from the main text, CHEMISTRY FOR TODAY: GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOCHEMISTRY, Fifth Edition.

Do not buy Used..........2007-02-15
For the first experiment, you have to cut out a page of the book! Don't buy used, as such little things as missing pages will hinder your success!

Easy to read and understand. .......2007-02-12
In very good condition. Delivered according to schedule as promised
This is not a good textbook.......2006-12-17
I am not finding this textbook helpful whatsoever. I am in a prenursing program at Mills College. Explanations are not thorough and I need frequent help through private tutoring, other chemistry help books and textbooks, workshops. The questions at the end of the chapter asked are not even discussed within the text. It should be understood that the majority of people entering the health field especially nursing are resumers and have not touched chemistry in decades. At least that is the case in my program, it seems like a lot of them are resumers.
More explanations needed. More basic background needed. More examples. Corrections needed to be made for the problems. Plus if the problems are tricky then they should not be in black but in red. A lot of inconsistencies.
The online website program needs to be improved with more interactive demonstrations, videos etc.
I took intro to chem with this book and now i have to take survey of chem with organ and biochem next semester with it.
Frustrating.......2006-04-24
The explanations provided in this text book are decent; although, on occasions the book's breadth is insufficient. Unfortunately, the answer keys and test questions that accompany this text are riddled with inaccuracies. After my Organic Chemistry class gets back each test, we spend a half hour eliminating faulty questions. Further, while this book is egregiously expensive, one must pay extra to access the online features.
it isn't the best.......2000-03-31
This book have a traditional approach, dont take anything new. Your price is very high.

Book Description
Biosensors offer clear and distinct advantages over standard analytical methods for the direct monitoring of environmental pollutants in the field, such as real-time detection with minimum sample preparation and handling. The present book highlights recent advantages that will be of great value to a range of scientists, researchers and students dealing with analytical and environmental chemistry and biosensor technology. It presents recent trends in analytical methodology for the determination of indoor and outdoor pollutants, advances in DNA, biological and recognition-based sensors, examples of biosensors for use in field and water analysis, biosensors based on non-aqueous systems, and recent advances in the miniaturisation and micromachining of biosensors.

Book Description
This book contains updated results of both theoretical and applied research in the field of sensors and methods for environmental control, mainly with regard to the detection of pollutant species in gaseous and liquid ambients.
The main arguments are related to: development of new nanostructured materials as sensing layers and new detection mechanisms; development of micro- and nano-systems and their integration in miniaturised instruments; application of innovative devices in the detection of contaminant chemical species and their monitoring.

Description:
Detection of pollutants is of significant importance for environmental protection. However, conventional monitoring methods are often time-consuming, and require expensive equipments. Biosensors based on enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) provide an alternative method to conventional ones. In this research, the reduction in the size of ELISA utilizing micro-chemical reaction is described in a micro-flow immunosensor chip. The immunosensor chips were fabricated by micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology. The quantitative determination of coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs) was performed by using a micro-flow immunosensor chip. Polystyrene beads were used as the solid substrate for the immobilization of Co-PCB antibody. The antibody-immobilized beads were introduced into the flow channel. As a competitive ELISA, sample solution mixed with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugated antigen, and non-HRP conjugated antigen was allowed to react in the flow channel. After the antigen-antibody reaction, addition of phosphate buffer solution containing hydrogen peroxide and the fluorogenic substrate produced a fluorescent dye, which was monitored with the resulting change in the fluorescence intensity. By using our micro-flow immunosensor chip, it was possible to determine the sensing range of Co-PCB derivatives up to 0.1ppt in 30s. This immunosensor chip had a wide linear range for Co-PCB detection from 0.1pg/ml to 1.0@mg/ml. The regression analysis provided the correlation coefficients of r=0.982-0.964 with good reproducibility and precision. In a series of five measurements with immunosensor chips prepared with a new batch of antibody-immobilized polystyrene beads, a relative standard deviation of 21.3% was obtained. Our immunosensor chip design reported here has the potential to be implemented to several different detection methodologies for numerous analytes.

Description:
This paper addresses environmental monitoring through a robust dynamic integration between biomonitor and biosensor systems, a strategy that has not been attempted before. The two systems are conceptually interrelated and methodologically correlated to a cooperative/synergistic scheme (CSS) with a view to minimise uncertainty and monitoring costs and increase reliability of pollution control and abatement. The structures and operations of the biosensor component (in terms of sensitivity, device and method versatility, nature-mimicking physicochemical mechanisms, prospects and technological input) are such that they reinforce or promote the structures and operations of the natural component (in terms of biosurveillance, impact assessment, environmental quality indexing, stress responses, metabolic pathways, etc.) and vice versa. The bioindicator ontology presented herein, including concepts, relations and controlled vocabulary aiming at establishing an integrated methodology for mapping/assessing negative environmental externalities, provides a useful tool for the design/development/implementation of an environmental network for the monitoring of a variety of pollutants over time and space and the assessment of environmental quality; the collection of the available information and its classification into taxonomic and partonomic relations allows the construction of a database that links pollutants with organisms' response, at a phenomenological and in-depth level, considering ecological parameters, relations and geomorphologic characteristics. As a result, a computer program has been designed/developed as a decision support system and has been successfully tested on a representative population of species indigenous to southern Greece. Significantly, a novel system in the form of a rational framework at the conceptual design level has been developed, that actually contributes towards achieving a cost-effective long-term monitoring program, with the flexibility to counter on-course any (anticipated or not) variations/modifications of the surveillance environment. This novel and pioneering approach will further offer a dynamic system utilised in (a) environmental impact studies and risk assessment (positive/analytic approach), (b) decision-making in the short-run (normative/tactic approach), and (c) policymaking in the long-run (normative/strategic approach). The proposed CSS, based on the integration of multiple data sources, can establish a local area network, incorporated into/expanding to a wide area network, thus offering the potential of better predictive ability and greater lead-time warning at alarm conditions than that provided by separate, stand-alone surveillance modalities.
