Book Description
This new volume provides reviews and reports by leading world-known scientists on the recent advances in toughening science and technology. It addresses the development of theoretical and practical approaches of toughness improvements for both thermosets and thermoplastics. The 21 chapters of the book are divided into five sections covering: the development of rubber-toughened plastics, fracture mechanics and failure mechanism vs. toughness, morphology and mechanical property vs. toughness, chemistry and physics vs. toughness, and application.

From the author: The effects of the injection-molding induced skin-core morphology on the fracture behavior of rubber-toughened polypropylene (RTPP) systems were studied by employing the essential work of fracture (EWF) method. RTPP with 31 wt% ethylene/propylene rubber (EPR) showed no skin-core structure after molding and the EWF approach worked well in this case. In contrast, RTPP with 10 wt% EPR exhibited a pronounced skin-core morphology: EPR depletion and enrichment was observed in the skin and core region, respectively. This morphology caused necking instead of crack growth in deeply double edge-notched (DDENT) specimens under tensile loading along the mold filling direction (MFD). The necking process not only was accompanied by a large scatter but also yielded highly unrealistic specific essential work of fracture ([w.sub.e]) values. This skin-core structure was also the reason for an anistropic EWF response of this system observed by loading the specimens both in longitudinal (L) and transverse (T) directions to the MFD. The failure sequence and its characteristics were studied by light microscopy (LM) and infared thermography (IT). It was concluded that the EWF approach cannot be applied for RTPP with a prominent skin-core structure. Since yielding preceded the limited crack growth prior to necking in the loading direction for the DDEN-T specimen of RTPP with 10 wt% EPR, the yielding-related specific essential work ([w.sub.e,y]) was used for toughness comparison. In case of RTPP with 31 wt% EPR, where yielding was less pronounced prior to the crack growth, the work of fracture until the maximum load was assigned to the yielding-related work of fracture ([w.sub.f,y]) used for computing [w.sub.e,y]. The latter value seems to be closely matched to the plane-strain essential work of fracture value.

From the author: The RTPP/ABS (rubber toughened polypropylene/poly (acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene) blends, both noncompatibilized and compatibilized with polypropylene-g-polystyrene, were prepared by melt mixing in a Brabender Plasti-Corder. As the torque ratio of RTPP and ABS was about 2, phase cocontinuity in the blends was achieved at ABS volume fractions around 0.16, which was evidenced by both microscopic analysis and mechanical testing. A new microscopic and image analysis technique was introduced, whose combination provides two semiquantitative parameters: structure roughness and structure cocontinuity. The latter parameter is closely associated with the predictive scheme based on the equivalent box model and percolation theory, which was used in this study. The predicted mechanical properties were confronted with the experimental data for tensile modulus, yield strength, and tensile impact strength. While the modulus of noncompatibilized blends is reasonably fitted by the model, the compatibilizer accounts for a positive deviation attributed to a strong interaction between the compatibilizer and the matrix. The yield strength of noncompatibilized blends indicates poor interfacial adhesion, which is so enhanced by the compatibilizer that no phase debonding occurs before yielding. Tensile impact strength, in contrast to modulus and yield strength, passes through a deep minimum for both types of blends; two tentative explanations of this detrimental behavior were suggested. Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology
ASIN: 044450155X |
Book Description
This book represents a new "earth systems" approach to catchments that encompasses the physical and biogeochemical interactions that control the hydrology and biogeochemistry of the system. The text provides a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of catchment hydrology, principles of isotope geochemistry, and the isotope variability in the hydrologic cycle -- but the main focus of the book is on case studies in isotope hydrology and isotope geochemistry that explore the applications of isotope techniques for investigating modern environmental problems.
Isotope Tracers in Catchment Hydrology is the first synthesis of physical hydrology and isotope geochemistry with catchment focus, and is a valuable reference for professionals and students alike in the fields of hydrology, hydrochemistry, and environmental science. This important interdisciplinary text provides extensive guidelines for the application of isotope techniques for all investigatores facing the challenge of protecting precious water, soil, and ecological resources from the ever-increasing problems associated with population growth and environmental change, including those from urban development and agricultural land uses.
Customer Reviews:
Another book on catchment hydrology?.......2004-02-28
A decently attempted foray into an otherwise exciting, yet overexamined academic topic. Catchment Hydrology is a field on the verge of media saturation, it seems that every scholar has his new catchment hydrology theory he is willing to espouse to packed lecture halls and cable tv hosts throughout the nation. While some have actually made important breakthroughs ( Limerick, Berkowitz et al) others are just falling in line behind the vanguards lapping up the short lived fame and glory. Maybe these "hydrologists" should get into the new fad, and by the way guys, pilates is already taken.

Book Description
The magnetocaloric effect describes the change in temperature of a magnetic material under adiabatic conditions through the application or removal of an external magnetic field. This effect is particularly pronounced at temperatures and fields corresponding to magnetic phase transitions, and it is a powerful and widely used tool for investigating the magnetic state and mechanisms of these transitions. Recently, there has been significant interest in its possible exploitation in magnetic refrigeration and cryocooling systems. The Magnetocaloric Effect and its Applications presents a complete overview of theoretical and experimental research results surrounding the magnetocaloric effect, and a comprehensive discussion of current and potential applications of the phenomenon. The book reviews those materials with magnetic moment both of band and localized nature and various types of magnetic ordering. It also considers materials with more exotic magnetic structures, and gives a detailed discussion on experimental and theoretical studies of a great number of rare earth magnetic materials, with emphasis on the physical interpretation of observed phenomena.

Book Description
This graduate-level text reviews the field of critical phenomena, including the use of neutron scattering techniques as an aid in their study. The book introduces the principles of magnetic systems and their critical dynamics, outlining the experimental and theoretical methods that have been used to understand the scattering effect. Measurements are examined for the dynamics and statics of one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems. Multicritical effects, critical phase transitions in magnetic metals, dilution, percolation, and random-field effects are also discussed in the light of neutron scattering measurements.

Book Description
Data on ferroelectric and antiferroelectric behaviour of pure compounds and solid solutions are critically evaluated, and in addition all other properties relevant to the characterization of these crystals are presented in tables and figures. Subvolume A covers oxides, Subvolume B non-oxides, and Subvolume C organic and liquid crystals as well as polymers. Each subvolume consists of a printed version and an electronic version on CD-ROM on which all the compiled data can be found by navigation and fulltext search. The printed version primarily serves as a supplement to the preceding volumes III/28 and III/16. Thus, only a fraction of tables and figures on CD-ROM are selected and presented in the printed version.
