Interesting supplemental book.......2004-06-02

A collection of lectures by professors attending a conference in Ustica Italy in 2000, this book covers a broad range of subjects including many that are often overlooked. We use this as a supplement to our textbook (Libes) in Marine Biogeochemistry/Chemical Oceanography. The chapters on aerosols, photochemical processes and a collection of chapters on toxicants (endrocrine-disrupting, organic and organometallic compounds) round out holes in the Libes book. Additionally, the other chapters present an up-to-date view of marine chemistry and organic matter cycling. This is not a true replacement for a more traditional textbook, but it is a great readings supplement.

This is the second volume of a two-volume work devoted to probability theory in physical chemistry, and engineering. Rather than dealing explicitly with the idea of an ongoing random walk, each chaotic step taking place at fixed time intervals, this volume addresses models in which the disorder is frozen in space-random environments. The volume begins with a largely self-contained introduction to the geometry of random environments, emphasizing Bernoulli percolation models. The scope of the investigation then widens as we ask how structural disorder affects the transport process. The final chapters confront the interplay of two different forms of randomness; spatial randomness frozen into the environment and temporal randomness associated with the choices for next steps made by a random walker. The book ends with a discussion of "the ant in the labyrinth" problems. It is supported by an extensive bibliography and very little prior knowledge is assumed.

The very idea of these airheads expressing their "faith in God" is vile enough. But the idea of including Laura "Gas Pedal" Bush is really too much. Why didn't she care when she ran over her boyfriend 25 times, the whole time shrieking about revenge? I don't consider that very holy.

I was really encouraged by all the many stories of triumph in this book. Women I look up to who have had difficultly in life. I see them and I think they have had an easy life and that's why they're leaders and influencial, but they haven't. They've overcome through their faith and it gives me hope that I can too. I keep my copy in my bathroom and rarely a person who uses it doesn't come out commenting on one of the stories. It would be a great book to give as a gift for any occassion or to someone who is struggling with one of the twelve issues the author covers.

An Awesome Book - Couldn't Put It Down!.......2005-07-17

I met author Leslie Montgomery at the CBA/International Christian Bookseller's Convention where she was signing copies of the book. I got in line because I like collecting autographed books by authors. I had no idea the treasure I'd found. I put the book in my purse so on the flight back to Miami I'd have something to read - I couldn't put the book down; I cried so much as I read the story about the couple who lost their son Matthew, but I was encouraged by their faith in God. I lost my son two years ago. I know what it is like. Thank you for sharing your story and thank the author for writing it down. I'm buying copies for my book store immediately. I highly reccomend this book to anyone going through a hard time. I pray that the author keeps writing books like this. Thanks.

I bought this book after reading Cajun Night Before Christmas, and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed it, especially after visiting New Orleans a couple years ago. I look forward to reading this to my future grandchildren.

I had the oppertunity to meet Jenny in person a few years back and she gave my son and autographed copy of the Cajun Night After Christmas with a "gator" and my son was thrilled. Every year at Christmas he takes his copy of the book to school to show his teachers and they read it to the class! Now I have another son and he loves the tale as much as my oldest son. The illustrations and text go together like bread and butter! I still laugh and get toungue tied when reading this book to my children. This book is not just a seasonal book for our family, it is a year round treat to enjoy together. We each have our Cajun Gator voices ready at bed time! Thank you Mrs. Moss for your wonderful gift to our family, you, your sister, and the illustrator are wonderful artists and have done a wonderful job with this book.

A Great Book.......2000-12-18

After reading the Cajun Night Before Christmas to children for many years and anticipating the release of this book, I was very impressed with the work of the authors. As usual, James Rice did an excellent job of illustrating. I am always impressed by his drawings,especially with the expressions of the characters. It was a great follow up to the Cajun Night Before christmas. I have added it to my vast collection of the original Night Before Christmas books and its variations. After I master the dialect and get the words to flow, I will probably be reading this book to kids for years to come. Thanks, Jenny, Amy and James

Quick read - not your typical story........2006-11-14

I rather enjoyed this book. Interestingly I didn't think the end was ambiguous at all. Apparently that's because I just assumed what their decision was, although now that I think about it I can see the ambiguity. I like the fact, though, that the story didn't get trite and trecaley. Having a family is an important decision and nobody should have children if they don't want them or do it because they feel familial pressure. The Karen story was a little over the top, but it was necessary to give a balance to the MC's decision.

A good attempt..........2006-11-08

I have enjoyed Wendy French's past books, and I was delighted to find "After the Rice". As always, it's a fun read, if a little unbelievable what with the families-in-law dynamics. In a way, it felt like two different stories were vying for space....a novel about newlyweds and how they deal with their families, and a novel about making adult decisions.
However, I was pleased with the way Ms. French handled such a sensitive subject. The protagonist and her husband thought they knew what they did and did not want out of life, yet they reach a crossroads where they have to question everything they thought they knew. Just because two adults are married does not mean that they have to accept a pregnancy they didn't want in the first place.
On the other hand, I was disappointed in the way she handled the older sister's *secret*. Good grief--it's such a cliche to say that every girl who has an abortion when she's young is haunted by it for the rest of her life.
The characters could have been fleshed out better, in my opinion...but I'm glad I read it and I look forward to the next WF novel.

Selfish, depressing characters!!!.......2006-07-22

I read this book initially because I love chick lit that actually allows the characters to grow and learn from their experiences. However, I was sadly disappointed in this book! I'd give it no-stars if I could.

This entire book revolves around the potential pregnancy of a young married woman.
I say *Potential* because the heroine cannot decide whether to carry the pregnancy to term or not.

No. She is not poor. No. She is not a victim of rape or incest. No. She is not a victim of an abusive husband. This protagonist has all the advantages, an education, a decent living wage, yet she ultimately decides NOT to continue with the pregnancy. And she feels good about it. She feels good about terminating a pregnancy because it's inconvenient for her. She talks to others who have had abortions and now regret it, and is unmoved. She never wanted to have children. She will do as she likes.

The crazy thing is, that I believe in abortion rights under certain circumstances!! For fifteen-year-olds, for rape or incest victims, for women with abusive husbands! But for married women who are not poor, but just selfish??? I don't know, in those circumstances, maybe it's better for the poor baby to get aborted. Obviously, this person wouldn't be able to actually *parent*.

After all the discussion of her options, I expected this character to actually come to a decision and explain to us why she had done that. But instead, the author brutally cheats her readers by giving us a peek-a-boo NON-ending. The characters have a discussion, and say, Oh, yes, of course, we'll do THAT!

Without ever specifying what THAT is!!! If we really try to maintain our happy-ending fantasy, we could imagine that she has the baby. But, honestly, given the dialogue and history, we KNOW that she has decided to abort the baby.

And the author doesn't even have the courage to say so straight out. If you are someone who cares for babies, you will not like this book.

After the Rice is French's latest novel, and although features her distinctive quirky characters, this book deals with some serious issues. Megan Ismore is twenty-nine, married for ten months, a "mature student" and finds out that she's pregnant. The problem? She and straight-laced husband, Matt, don't want children. Over the course of a week, Megan tries to get time alone with Matt to tell him her news. Unfortunately, two annoying house guests, a sister having a nervous breakdown, and babysitting a "pink tyrant" of a niece leave little time for the couple. Will they keep the baby or won't they? The difficult question at the heart of this book shows French is expanding as a writer, tackling more complicated situations through her characters.
