The basic concept of this new edition remains unchanged: Emphasis is again put on a broader description of the general methods and processes for the synthesis, modification and characterization of macromolecules. These more fundamental chapters will be supplemented by 115 selected and detailed experiments. In addition to the preparative aspects the book also gives the reader an impression on the relation of chemical constitution and morphology of Polymers to their properties, as well as on their application areas. Thus, an additional textbook will not be needed in order to understand the experiments.
The 4th edition nevertheless contains numerous changes: Chapter 1 and 2 are enlarged, 15 older examples have been replaced by new ones and background text is added. Suitable for students in organic and polymer chemistry as well as for chemists in industry who want to acquaint themselves with the theoretical and practical aspects of macromolecular chemistry.

Book Description
This introductory textbook gives a uniform presentation of nuclear and particle physics. The first part, Analysis, is devoted to disentangling the substructure of matter. This part shows that experiments designed to uncover the substructures of nuclei and nucleons have a similar conceptual basis, and lead to the present picture of all matter being built out of a small number of elementary building blocks and a small number of fundamental interactions. The second part, Synthesis, shows how the elementary particles may be combined to build hadrons and nuclei. The fundamental interactions responsible for the forces in all systems become less and less evident in increasingly complex systems. Such systems are in fact dominated by many-body phenomena. A section on neutrino oscillations and one on nuclear matter at high temperatures bridge the field of "nuclear and particle physics" and "modern astrophysics and cosmology". New developments are covered, e. g. in sections on the double beta decay including a discussion of the possibility of a neutrinoless decay and its implications for the standard model. This concise text, translated into many languages, has become a standard reference for advanced and undergraduate courses.

Up to date and State of the art.......2000-08-09
Povh, Rith, Scholz, and Zetsche have written an exceptional book about nuclei and particles. It is comprehensive, but not too elaborate to confuse the reader, it is up to date, but provides a thorough guide to the contemporary topics, and it has an unusual structure that is very compelling: In part one, the decomposition of matter down to the structures of elementary particles is presented, in part two, the synthesis of composite systems out of these fundamental particles and their interactions is discussed. This approach is - from a structural point of view - a brilliant idea.
So why do I rate this book with 4 stars only? Maybe because I personally like Donald Perkins' book on high-energy phyics even better (and if the new edition is as good as announced it will probably remain my preferece). The nuclear physics content (my personal field of interest) is also only briefly addressed in the book by Povh et al. (Perkin's book of course contains no introduction to nuclear structure at all, even on a very rough scale, but it has its focus clearly only on high-energy physics whereas Povh et al. also address nuclear structure issues). Clearly, Povh et al. focus on the introduction to a wide field where addtional reading is required anyway.
It would be highly desirable if the authors could enlarge their interesting introductory textbook by a few topical results of nuclear structure physics. But all in all, it is a very good approach to the world of nuclei, particles, and their interactions.

The time is not far off when nano-circuits made entirely of silicon exhibit such many-body properties as superconductivity or ferromagnetism without any superconducting materials or magnetic ions being present. The reader of this book will be prepared for such exotic twenty-first century applications. Daniel C Mattis, BS, MS, PhD, Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), is a frequent lecturer at research institutions and the author of several textbooks and numerous research articles. His expertise includes many-body theory, electrical conductivity, quantum theory of magnetism and most recently, nanotechnology. Prof. Mattis is on the editorial panel for high-temperature superconductivity of the International Journal of Modern Physics B and Modern Physics Letters B, both published by World Scientific. Good review.......2007-01-23
This book is a good review on this subject. In starting the book with a brief history of the magnetism, the author shows in a very soft way how important the Quantum Mechanics is to this subject. There are very good examples for each section and what there is most recent in this issue. Unfortunately, some important topics are treated in a very superficial way. As an example is the renormalization group which has an enormous application in magnetism. Despite that, this book would be a good choice to a course on introduction to magnetism.
Not What Is Expected.......2007-01-01
The "made simple" part of the title is completely misleading. Its is not at all simple. Not at all at an introductry level.
The chapter on angular momentum has many "trivial" mistakes. For example, he writes J|Y) = (h-bar)m|Y) and calls "m the eigenvalue". But it is the "(h-bar)m" that is the eignevalue and not just "m".
A little later he writes that he will from this point on use units in which h-bar = 1. O.K. But then he continue to write in h-bar all over the place.
This book could use a good technical editor.
And, again, it is not a "made simple" book unless you already know the material.

Even with the book from the future and those villagers with the flaming torches to help them out, getting things sorted by Friday could be cutting it fine...

Robert Rankin has without doubt the most bizarre sense of humour that I've run across. This isn't a bad thing, but it is a character trait I enjoy in a writer. I enjoy almost all I read by him, and this book is just as good as his others. People in danger on worlds far away, the cult of the daemon chicken Sate-Hen, an abomination of nature and of err... nature too, if you take my meaning and I'm sure that you do, and an abduction by astro starfish! What more could you wish for, cept a pint n a nice seat to sit on while you read. Make mine a large!

I stumbled upon this second hand book in a little store in Egypt (of all places) and read the whole thing through in less then two days. Not that it's this short, it's this good ! It completely obliterated all interest I had in pharao's and pyramids, i just couldn't put it down.
If you like Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchet, you're gonna love this.
It's the first book of Robert Rankin i read and here I am, coming back for more.. ;-)

I will never tire of this book. In the three years since I first discovered it, I have read it well over ten times. Excellent value for money. A lot of Rankin's fans treat this as his worst bok, I say it is his best. It is superbly off-the-wall, with likeable, funny characters, and moments that continue to make me laugh out loud every time. Should be retitled The Greatest Book on Earth.

When you read a Rankin you have a good idea what your in for: wacky characters, daft running gags,a completely over-the-top plot and hours of humourous entertainment. 'The Greatest Show Off Earth' delivers this and more. If you are struggling to find good humour since the demise of Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers and Dirk Gently series then look no further than Rankin.

Poignant Debauchery.......2006-03-25
On first inspection, `The Greatest Show on Earth" is just that: a bawdy high-wire act that pushes the reader right to the edge of comfort by demanding that he or she examine where the simple line of humor ends and tragedy begins.
A second look however, informs the reader that the the coarseness of the imagery belays an innocence and naive confusion about the status of 21st century morality.
While it is easy in a magicians `bait and switch' act to distract a reader with scenes of emotionally apocalyptic delirium, depraved young women ruining the lives of others in their selfish, blood-soaked, masochistic hedonism; protagonist Frank is something entirely different.
In some ways, it almost appears that writer Daniel Scott Buck felt he had to place Frank in this sick version of carnival hell in order to ask one simple question- can life have value?
The fact that Frank asks this question to the Panopticon-like omnipresence of a reality show staff member shows how desperate and contemporary this question actually is.
