                Book Description

Imagine a world that is always changing. Within hours, sometimes minutes, it can go from hot to cold or calm to stormy, from being flooded with water to out in the open air. What kinds of creatures could live in such a strange world? How do they deal with such extreme changes?

To answer these questions, a group of middle-school children went to the Bay of Fundy. There, they explored the world just described -- the tidal zone, land covered and uncovered by the ocean as the tide climbs up and down the shore. Wading into cold water, the kids found animals that defended themselves by throwing their internal organs at their enemies. They discovered creatures that cast off injured arms and grew new ones. They tickled sea anemones and played hide-and-seek with seals. After a week of sailing the ocean and tramping through seaweed, these kids came to understand this amazing, hidden world.

This is a fascinating firsthand account of the science of marine biology. As in the other Ultimate Field Trips -- Bats, Bugs, and Biodiversity: Adventure in the Amzonian Rain Forest and Stones, Bones, and Petroglyphs: Digging into Southwest Archaeology -- Susan E. Goodman and Michael J. Doolittle vividly portray students' scientific adventures for all readers to share.

                              Book Description

This book contains the contributions to the Workshop on the Physics and Applications of High Brightness Electron Beams, held in July 2002 in Sardinia, Italy. This workshop had a broad international representation from the fields of intense electron sources, free-electron lasers, advanced accelerators, and ultra-fast laser-plasma, beam-plasma and laser-beam physics. The interdisciplinary participants were brought together to discuss advances in the creation and understanding of ultra-fast, ultra-high brightness electron beams, and the unique experimental opportunities in frontier high-energy-density and radiation-source physics which are offered by these scientific tools.

                                        Product Description

Voluptuous, sensuous, alluring, and fun. Barely 40 DWF seeks special man to share starlit nights. Must love dogs. Life after divorce for Sarah Hurlihy consists of juggling her job as a preschool teacher and the demands of her interfering family. Then her bossy big sister decides to place a personal ad for her, and the unexpected becomes a daily event. Everybody wants Sarah to put the past behind her and take a bold step towards a fresh start. But when Sarah winds up with a lot of new men and rambunctious dogs in her life, along with plenty of awkward situations, unexpected emotions, and not-so-easy decisions, she wonders whether those mindless evenings sitting alone and watching The Brady Bunch were really all that bad.

                                        Book Description

Claire Cook's beguilingly original Ready to Fall struck a vibrant chord with its "perky take on midlife angst" (Publishers Weekly). In Must Love Dogs she gives us a contemporary Everywoman in a big rollicking south-of-Boston Irish family-a zany novel with the flavor of Nora Ephron, Susan Isaacs, and Jeanne Ray's Julie and Romeo.

Forty-year-old Sarah Hurlihy, a divorced preschool teacher whose life is her classroom, is about to meet her first date in more than a decade. It was the "Loves Dogs" that hooked her in the personal ad, and now she is scanning her neighborhood café for the man with a yellow rose. And find him she does, but he's the last person on earth she expects to find there . . .

In Must Love Dogs, hilarious missteps abound. Sarah's widowed father, Billy Hurlihy, with six adult kids, is seeing at least two women. And he and Sarah aren't the only Hurlihys with romantic challenges. Her brother Michael, for one, has a rocky marriage that Mother Teresa, his St. Bernard, just may put over the edge. With self-deprecating humor and a laugh-out-loud view of the way we live now, including shar pei/Labrador crosses and a transgenerational body-piercing experience, Must Love Dogs is a perfect beach read that melts the heartache of dating with warmth and humor.

4 out of 5 stars Very different from the movie, not in a bad way.......2007-05-19

I decided to read this book after watching the movie. There are couple of scenes that are in both, but I found the movie much funnier. The banter is missing between the siblings in the book, BUT this doesn't make the book a bad read. It's actually an enjoyable quick read. A passage from this book makes me want to stir some white wine into boxed mac and cheese. Apparently it's delicious.

                                        3 out of 5 stars A lonely kindergaten teacher.......2007-01-11

To some degree, a story of a woman contemplating her navel, her unusual family and her rather empty life. It was turned into a hilarious movie, while an obvious chick flick was considerably better than the novel, largely due to the extraordinarily pleasing leading characters and an improved story line.

3 out of 5 stars Patti Linnell got it covered; no need to reinvent the wheel........2006-09-09

Patti Linnell did such a nice job reviewing this book that I don't have much too add. This is not a boring look, the writing is fun and entertaining and occasionally even hilarious. The ending is weird and sort of unsatisfying, but I'm one who likes the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In spite of the chuckles and the strong characters (some, like Dottie, were over the top), it was a pleasant read, not memorable, so I'm going to have to go with 3.

                                        I rate books as follows:
***** Fun and meaningful book, or changed/challenged me in a positive way.
****Really fun or meaningful; well worth the time.
***Pleasantly skimmed the surface; not memorable.
                                        **Plodded through.
                                        *Abandoned; very flawed.

3 out of 5 stars Claire Cook does have talent..........2006-07-08

I really don't like reading books that has a cover that features women's feet. Usually women's feet = dumb book. Must Love Dogs featured all the regular chick lit norms:

                                        1) The conflict in the story must not be life threatening - no AIDS, cancer, etc. Or too serious, like terrorism or stock market crashes.
                                        2) Another character has to be tall and thin and blonde to help point out how not tall, thin and blonde she is, BUT it must come out in the end that she was secretly jealous the whole time. Towards the end there has to be a speech of "I've always admired you and I thought you hated me!!"
                                        3) The Heroine must have one really hip old person in her life, relative or not.
                                        4) The Heroine cannot be married, she must be in love with: a) a guy who treats her like crap b) a guy who is either above or below her extremely on the social totem pole or c) a gay guy. Maybe all three?
                                        5) Most of all, the heroine must never have any sort of strong political, religious or social views or think about any subject that might cause her to think more on any of these three subjects.

They thing that made me not hate this book (except for the weird sappy ending where they all come together like some odd Christmas special on that weird bus. The ending was like a strange dream sequence. I kept waiting for Neil Diamond or Tom Jones to appear to lead them all in a brilliant rendition of Auld Lang Syne.) was that Claire Cook does write very well and is very witty and warm. Oh Claire Cook! Write another book! Use your powers for good not evil!
