    Book Description

This book presents the basic theory and application of the Monte Carlo method to the electronic structure of atoms and molecules. It assumes no previous knowledge of the subject, only a knowledge of molecular quantum mechanics at the first-year graduate level. A working knowledge of traditional ab initio quantum chemistry is helpful, but not essential.

Some distinguishing features of this book are:

Clear exposition of the basic theory at a level to facilitate independent study.

Discussion of the various versions of the theory: diffusion Monte Carlo, Green's function MonteCarlo, and release node Monte Carlo.

Commentary on the important features that distinguish this stochastic approach from ab initio methods.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Elizabethan Romance.......2003-10-17

Setting - England 1580's - Under normal circumstances the Lady Elizabeth would not even be aware of Richard Tarleton, famed court jester of her godmother, Queen Elizabeth I - but these were not normal circumstances, as Lady Elizabeth Hayward was fleeing her betrothed, the odious Sir Robert LaFaye from him forcing her to wed him. At Elizabeth's request, her father had agreed to cancel the betrothal but before the proper papers could be signed, her father died and she suspected that Sir Robert had poisoned him. Unfortunately, the horse she was riding threw her and now, alone and on foot, she had nowhere to turn, until she heard a cherry song in the woods. Following the sounds she came upon a naked man finishing up his morning dip.

Tarleton is aware of his good looks and charm is not in the least embarrassed by his attire, or lack thereof, and discovers the story behind the fair Lady Elizabeth's early morning flight. She convinces him to escort her to Hampton Court, summer palace of the Queen, where she can hope to convince her godmother to set aside her betrothal. Tarleton, who also roams around the countryside to gather information for the queen's spymaster, helps her to don a disguise and they set off on a sometimes merry, and sometimes harrowing adventure.

The love between Elizabeth and Dickon is so sweet and tender, even though Tarleton knows the fair lady is so far above him in rank, he being base born, it does not keep him from losing his heart. He recognizes that Elizabeth is falling for him and, realizing what could never be, does his best to discourage her affection. This was in my opinion a really good historical romance. The details of the intrigues of the period were adequate, making it interesting, and the well-developed secondary characters added to the enjoyment. This was quite a good effort for this author's debut novel and one that I can recommend for lovers of romance in the Elizabethan era.

                        5 out of 5 stars book description.......2003-09-16

'Twas no laughing matter. When fleeing an odious arranged match, the Lady Elizabeth Hayward found herself under the protection of famed court jester Richard Tarleton. But even disguised as the fool's boy apprentice, there was no hiding the fact that she'd fallen hopelessly in love! Though Tarleton's ready wit had won him royal favor, his tongue was tied in the presence of the sweet-voiced Elizabeth- at least about things that truly mattered. For how could he offer the queen's own goddaughter a gift so lowly as his own foolish heart?

                        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful begining.......2003-03-06

Tori Phillips makes her historical writing debut with a bang! She is a masterful story teller. This book is so fantastic. It provides a wonderful begining to a wonderful career.

                        5 out of 5 stars Sweet Romance.......2000-07-12

The love between Elizabeth and Dickon is so sweet and tender, and even though I always cry at the end, this book lifts my spirits. While there is a bit of intrigue, it isn't a thriller. This book should be read when you want to curl up in a comfy chair on a rainy day and feel warm.

1 out of 5 stars can you say CHEESY!.......1999-01-20

i'm wondering why i even read it (all the way through!)because i normaly wouldn't read cheap wanna-be romance books. this book made no sense whatsoever either. she did not have to pretend to be an apprentice she could have easily gone somewhere else to someone else. and the end was incredibly stupid!

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the title turn you away........2006-12-02

The Thousand Islands. The very name inspires visions of beauty and unbridled wealth.
Shortly after the end of the Civil War, America's rich and famous discovered the fabulous islands of the upper St. Lawrence, and over the next fifty years made them into America's premier resort area. The best and brightest architects were engaged. They designed structures which fit each individual island so well they seemed to almost grow from the granite. Castles the like of which few kings or queens could afford, elaborate summer residences, and grand hotels abounded, as did restaurants and yacht clubs.
It was possible to step aboard a train in New York Friday evening, and arrive at the river in time for breakfast the next morning - often while aboard the launch on the way to the "cottage". Not only could one enjoy the pristine beauty of the islands in total privacy, a rich social life was also possible. The family simply boarded the yacht and traveled to the evening's soiree in style. Rarely did a weekend pass without one or two gala parties, and in fact people-watching became almost as popular as the golf, polo, tennis, boat races and fishing.
In this fine work, Paul Malo succeeds in conveying impressions of the way life was among America's royalty. Although the device used, a dialogue between the author and one of the last of the old time residents of the area, feels contrived at times, in choosing it Malo manages to deliver a tremendous number of facts and figures without allowing the recitation to become dull.
In addition to the interview style, Malo adds photos and memories from his own youth on the river circa 1945. By then, many of the fabulous homes had been boarded up, and others no longer existed. These nostalgic images will haunt you. What a shame to lose these wonderful places. Overall, the author's after-the-fact memories add a very nice counterpoint to those of the interviewee - a woman who lived on the fringes of Thousand Island society at the turn of the century - and who describes a time when the resort was at it's peak of popularity.
Although this is a trade paperback. It has been produced with care and given a durable full-color cover with flyleafs to be used as placemarkers. There are a few proofreading shortfalls, but otherwise it's an excellent addition to any library and an especially valuable tool for persons writing fiction set in the area.
Art Tirrell, author of The Secret Ever Keeps ISBN 978-1-60164-004-8, coming April 07.

                        Book Description

Award-winning essayist Stewart Justman traces the inspiration of the pop psychology movement to the utopianism of the 1960s and argues that it consistently misuses the rhetoric that grew out of the civil rights movement. Speaking as it does in the name of our right to happiness, pop psychology promises liberation from all that interferes with our power to create the selves we want. In so doing, Mr. Justman writes, it not only defies reality but corrodes the traditions and attachments that give depth and richness to human life.

4 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Balance to the World of Self Help.......2006-01-27

Justman clearly exposes many of the contradictions and outright bouts of logical errors found in self-help tomes. He rightly describes the way self-help authors seek to estalish themselves as your one true friend, while accusing the rest of the world, especially your parents and any traditional insitutions, of conspiring to make you unhappy. Today's self help gurus rant against tradition and the past, while blindly building on the past tradition of the self help movement. I give Justman 4 stars because I think there are some self-help books, authors and techniques that can be useful. Not all of them can be pigeonholed as snake oil. Anyone who reads self-help books should read Fool's Paradise to get a different perspective on the subject. I would also recommned Paul Pearsall's The Last Self-Help Book You'll Ever Need. Pearsall, a practicing psychologist, offers critique's of self-help backed up by studies, while at the same time allowing for self-help to be, well, helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Angry Intellectual's Paradise: The Unreal World of Literary Criticism.......2006-01-15

I read this book after listening to the author in a radio talk show. On the air, his comments on the history of psychology were surprisingly vague; he was irritable, and rebuked callers (some therapists) who moderately tried to consider some benefits of pop psychology. Nonetheless, I reasoned, maybe the book is better...

It raises good points againt pop psychology: that it is solipsistic, blindly non-judgemental, immediatist, and formulaic. The author also makes interesting, even if loose, associations between pop psychology and the civil rights movement and classic Romanticism.

However, the author totally ignores the vast scholarship on individualism trends, counterculture and the New Age, and never considers what psychologists or readers may have to say about pop psychology. A textual analysis that reinvents the wheel, and ignores the producers and consumers of the cultural texts under consideration, is anything but persuasive.

Yet, what ultimately undermines the book is its excessively corrosive style. The essay basically is the outraged opinion of someone who read a bunch of self-help books and utterly hated them. With no further justifications, the author indulges in an overkill strategy of restless sarcasm that becomes quite tiring after a while. The angry essay unfortunately backfires on what could otherwise be a compelling critique of pop psychology.

For a balanced analysis, Anthony Giddens' "Transformation of Intimacy" considers pop psychology in the context of social reflexivity and growing demands for interpretations of the self.

[PS: It is curious that low-starred reviews tend to be voted "unhelpful", no matter how objective and elucidating they may be. How interesting...]

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book of powerful literary criticism.......2005-11-28

It is important to understand that this takes on the world of pop psychology as a subject for literary criticism rather than debating its medical claims, a subject for humorous satire, or by offering its own "therapy". Any of the alternatives would be justified and could have been successful, but I really do appreciate the serious way literary criticism is used in these essays because we get so little of it in our post-modern values-neutral deconstructionist non-judgmental age. Here, instead of a bunch of emotional ranting trying to pass as analysis we get an informed and reasoned approach that demonstrates the ways in which the world of pop psychology has inverted and misused literature from the past, contradicts itself, and actually creates a toxic interpersonal environment.

Stewart Justman teaches English at the University of Montana. He has written previously on psychology, studied at Columbia, and is an award winning essayist. He begins this book with an extended essay on the ways in which pop psychology is intertwined with the Utopian movement of the sixties. Not that one sprang from the other, but that the culture was ripe for both and the mis-readings of Utopian literature led to ignorant writings advocating unworkable system. He shows us how these advocates misuse even our Declaration of Independence and its right to the pursuit of happiness for a right to happiness! He notes that some claim this movement is rooted in American Individualism, but the author wonders if any individualist would so completely submit to the dictates of a Wayne Dyer, Steve Covey, or a Phil McGraw (among countless others).

He goes through a series of seven chapters demonstrating how this literature inverts traditional values and puts its adherents in even greater isolation and dependency. We go through blame, guilt, obligation, patience, choice, morality, and self-transformation. He shows us how serious psychologists such as Maslow and Laing extend us into a narcissistic world where all relationships are about "me" and even children become accoutrements! Where we must realize that all relationships in our life, our family, our religion are all toxic, EXCEPT for our dependency upon our therapist or guru (again, Dyer, Covey, McGraw, and more).

I think the strongest chapters are those devoted directly to literary criticism. Literature Rewritten and Constructing Stories are absolutely terrific and powerful. The author demonstrates the way the reader of this literature is manipulated. It demonstrates how the stories the literature uses also fail the requirements of art and why this important to understand.

The last chapter on liberal guilt is quite entertaining because the author shows how this is a guilt of discussion not emotion. If you actually feel the guilt you talk about something is then wrong and the emotion must be disposed of.

This is a very good book and I strongly recommend it. I hope college students get an opportunity to read it. Of course, having a professor of the quality of this author would help the class discussion a great deal. Still, this book can help any reader understand better so much of what is going on in our culture and why it is not only wrong, but very damaging to its adherents and their accoutrements.

5 out of 5 stars Death of a Sacred Cow.......2005-10-15

Stewart Justman shoots a diseased sacred cow in Fool's Paradise. He systematically, logically, and humorously holds Pop Psychology and its practitioners in front of a spotlight to strip away the nonsense and reveal their pseudo-science for what it is - repetitive, self sustaining, Utopianism for children.

The author describes the self-awareness, discover and liberate your inner child movement as narcissism struggling against the evils of morality, responsibility, and duty. It's a great book for those stuck in a destructive loop of, "maybe the next self help book will make me happy."

Carey McWilliams (1905-1980)—lawyer, activist, historian, editor of The Nation for two decades—wrote the history of California as no one else could, or would. Alternately scathing, amusing, and disturbing, his accounts, sharp and literate, shatter the myths meant to obscure the real workings of the state, revealing always the relationship between the exploited and those who would exploit them.

Readers will find that McWilliams's writing on history and the issues of his day is still relevant—in fact, it is the basis for the field that we now call California studies. His painstakingly researched accounts on topics ranging from racism to the intricacies of commerce, from farm labor to the cults of California, have opened the door for generations of writers and thinkers and continue to amuse, energize, inspire, and inform us.

"Fool's Paradise" is an excellent introduction to the work of an amazing writer and astonishingly versatile public intellectual, now largely forgotten. Before editing "The Nation" for two decades, McWilliams wrote a dozen first-rate books and hundreds of penetrating articles on the exploitation of farm labor, racial and ethnic prejudice, the Japanese-American internment, California politics and culture, and the Red scare. He also served in state government and played a role in several high-profile court cases. His 1946 book, "Southern California: An Island on the Land," inspired the Oscar-winning screenplay for "Chinatown," and he is still widely regarded as the finest nonfiction writer on California--ever. Later, he published many talented young journalists in the pages of "The Nation," including Ralph Nader, Hunter S. Thompson, and Howard Zinn. Along with samples of McWilliams's own lucid writing, "Fool's Paradise" includes superb essays by his son, political theorist Wilson Carey McWilliams, and by Gray Brechin, author of "Imperial San Francisco."

                          Book Description

Doris McCarthy is one of Canada’s foremost landscape painters, a dynamic woman whose career spans fifty years of Canadian art history. As a student in Toronto in the 1920’s, she was tutored by Group of Seven members Arthur Lismer, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, and others; as a teacher, she inspired a generation of younger artists, among them Joyce Wieland.

This captivating memoir of her early years is the first installment of her warm and intimate biography. It describes the fortunes of an artist striving to establish herself in the art world of the thirties and forties and the odyssey of a spirited girl searching for her own path to fulfillment. Against the backdrop of those eventful decades, she writes of studying art in pre-war London, winning a teaching position in the depths of the Depression and roughing it on painting expeditions to northern Ontario, the Maritimes and the Rockies. She tells of her personal life: of breaking loose from a disapproving mother, building her own home on the bluffs above Lake Ontario, and of finding love in unexpected places.

Written with disarming candour and wit, and drawing on the diary she has kept since childhood, her story illuminates timeless themes: the youthful longing for independence, the nature of friendships between girls and women, the exhilaration of artistic creation, and the irresistible pull of nature and the Canadian landscape. A Fool in Paradise charms and enthralls with its unforgettable portrait of a young woman in search of herself.

The Good Wine, An Artist Comes of Age, delivered the next stage of her life from the age of 40 from 1950 to 1991. It recounts her year of full-time painting in Europe; encounters with Dorothy Sayers and Arnold Toynbee; friendships with Bora Laskin and Boyd Neel. The second installment of her biography is as enchanting as the first.

Doris McCarthy's two-part autobiography is a joy! It is at least as much about life as it is about art, teaching art and working at being an artist. Wonderful stories of her 80 years of old and new friendships, escapades, struggles & travels fill both volumes ("A Fool in Paradise" and "The Good Wine.") Her sharp and honest (but warm) wit lightens even the stories of difficult times with her family, the war years, school administrations and art societies.

Now recognized as one of Canada's finest landscape painters, Ms. McCarthy has no hesitation in sharing with us her struggles "to get things right" in her paintings. Her openness about the challenges of being an artist is a real inspiration and her humility about her work is refreshing given her status!

As a final note it is only fair to say that when I first began to read these books I wondered if it was only because Ms. McCarthy was one of my outstanding art teachers that I felt so delighted in her story. However long before I even started the second volume I knew that she had such a well-written, fascinating story that its appeal reaches far beyond the arts community. Well worth every moment of the read!
