This book covers the field of solar production of hydrogen by water photo-splitting (photoelectrolysis) using semiconductor photoanodes. The emphasis of the discussion is on the use of nanotechnology in the field. The theories behind photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical processes responsible for hydrogen production, a state-of-the-art review of the semiconductor materials especially nanostructures of both oxides and non-oxides employed as photoanodes and methods used for improving the efficiency of the processes are given in detail. The book also gives an account of the techniques used for making the nanostructures. It begins with a discussion on hydrogen as an energy carrier, a historical background on hydrogen extraction from water, and various methods employed for hydrogen extraction. Strategies are suggested for developing future nanostructured materials to achieve high efficiency, photochemically stable photoanodes optimized for the visible portion of the solar spectrum.

The second part provides discussions and data on both heterogeneous photocatalytic and homogeneous processes, with topics ranging from applications to mechanistic studies. These chapters illustrate the wide diversity of pollutant classes that are degradable by photochemical techniques and the effects of various reaction conditions on the rates and efficiency of the techniques. Current kinetic studies are presented, which provide new information about the role of adsorption and the nature of the reactive oxidizing species that mediate these photoremediation processes. This book will interest civil, chemical, and environmental engineers, as well as chemists, soil scientists, geochemists, and atmospheric chemists.

This is an excellent, concise, and mostly understandable set of treatises on photoelectrochemically related topics. It's a shame the book is so expensive, but I guess that's normal for anything expected to have a small readership.

This workshop comprises part of the four-year (1985-1988) non-nuclear energy R & D programme for the development of renewable energy sources which is being implemented by the Commission of the European Communities. The aim of the workshop was to present work by the contracting laboratories in addition to work by numerous other research laboratories in 11 European countries. Extensive discussions were also held on the present state of this basic, directed research in photochemistry, photoelectrochemistry and photobiology, and where the future emphasis may usefully lie.
Thus the book presents the proceedings of all the papers presented and summarizes the recommendations made by the participants as to where future research support may be most effectively placed. It was emphasized in these recommendations that the interdisciplinary collaboration between photochemistry and photobiology had been quite successfully achieved in this European programme. There were both high quality basic research and practical benefits accruing from the work, and these are described in the report on proposed areas for future research.
