Beginning with an introduction to extraction methodology, Extraction of Organic Analytes from Foods then progresses through sample preparation, extraction techniques (partition, solvation, distillation, adsorption and diffusion) and applications. Examples of methods that have been compared, combined or used in collaborative trials have been correlated and used to form the beginnings of a database that can be expanded and updated to provide a laboratory reference source. Description:
A new analytical method has been developed for the quantification of 59 different persistent organohalogen compounds, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), PCB metabolites, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in biological organ tissues. The optimum extraction and cleanup procedures were examined using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), automated gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on Biobeads S-X3 and automated solid phase extraction (SPE) on silica-gel. The target compounds were divided into two fractions, non-polar compounds and more polar compounds, which in the latter fraction was subsequently methylated using diazomethane. Detection can be achieved by GC/MS in negative chemical ionization (NCI) mode. The average recoveries of the compounds spiked in swine liver, heart, kidney, and cattle adipose tissues were considered satisfactory, and it was confirmed that the method could be used in routine analysis.

Geophysical techniques can map the underground conditions apart from boreholes. The use of these methods for hydrogeological applications is demonstrated for mapping of porous aquifers, mapping of structural aquifers, determintation of groundwater quality (mineralization), geophysical assessment of hydraulic properties, determination of aquifer vulnerability, and mapping of comtaminated sites. Additionally, a description of applied geophysical techniques used for groundwater studies is given including seismics, resistivity methods, magnetics, and ground penetrating radar. Even advanced techniques like NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) are presented.

Many facets of fusion dynamics were discussed, ranging from energies well below the Coulomb barrier to higher energies. Various questions about compound nucleus decay were also addressed, and evidence of links between fusion, competing reactions and nuclear structures was presented: some talks concerned the superdeformed structures recently discovered in many nuclei. Part of the workshop was devoted to the fusion of very heavy systems, and to the production of superheavy elements. One session focused on fusion reactions with radioactive ion beams.

This books is great for young children who may or may not have experienced physical or sexual abuse. This book provides a sense of security to facilitate more discussion with a caring adult. Kids feel safe with this book and the book gets kids thinking of their own good ideas for coping with situations. The pictures may be a little bland, but many kids enjoy brightening pages up on their own!

Caresse "Cari" Collins works for Child Welfare in Willow Glen. She sees daily numerous cases of child abuse and spouse abuse but often in most cases there is nothing she can do for the battered women because of their fear and their thought of them deserving it so she does what she can; she takes the child from the home. She was about to do the same with Aimee Bradley, a three-year-old child, when she was taken by a strange man.
Lincoln "Linc" Maitland knew every time his sister was beaten. He knew how bad it was and sometimes he even felt the blows. Lyssa and Linc are fraternal twins and have always had a special empathic bond with one another so this was not unusual for them. He always came by the house and begged, pleaded, and threatened for her to leave with him but she never did and it was too late - or so he thought. Linc came by and found Lyssa dead - though she was in a deep coma - and he thought the husband had taken his sweet, "shortcake" Aimee until he heard a strange noise. After finding her, they left and hit the road. There was no way he was going to allow Bradley, the husband, to touch a hair on his nieces head.
Soon Cari and Linc found themselves together in his journey of healing. They tried to pull the little girl with the heart of gold out of her shell. She never talked or if she did it was only a whisper and most times on then to her "Angel Bear". She lived in a state of constant fear of not knowing the rules and afraid of breaking them. She was afraid the "mean voice" would come back. Given time, love blossomed between the two who strived so hard to heal the little girl. Their love was passionate and complete. The healing retreat was called short, however, when Cari found out Linc was wanted for the murder of Bradley and they went back to face Linc's fate - a long trail - and hopefully his freedom.
CARESSE: A LOVING TOUCH was an amazing story of abuse, healing, love, family, and freedom. The book was an inspiration, especially to those who live in fear and are in abusive situations. Ms. Lawrence showed us the ugliness of abuse and then the beauty of relief and how much good healing can do for those who have born so very much. The relationship between Cari and Linc is sweet and loving. Their love so powerful they help those close to them; Aimee. Aimee is such a sweet character; the way she recites the flag and the way she loves with her whole heart. Together these three make a wonderful tale about a real terrible issue but instead of a tragic ending we get a beautiful, heart-wrenching, tissue-needing tale Ms. Lawrence should be proud to have written. This book has real issues and a happy ending - what more can you want than that? Ms. Lawrence should be commended for her excellent weave of both into one fabulous book!
FROM HEARTBREAK TO TRIUMPH.......2000-05-23
Margaret Lawrence takes the heartbreaking story of an abused child and her equally abused mother to depths of poignancy and triumph, yet creates a terrific romantic suspense with knock-out courtroom drama and a surprise ending. This deserves a wide readership for both the subject matter and the superb storytelling.

A bit or comfort food........1998-03-28
While at times this book reads like a collection of works by other authors (the bibliography is longer than that of a Master's thesis) Cadmus' style is as warm and gentle as a family supper after church. His relating specific examples of Christian living into a broad-brush approach to life is done without fire and brimstone.
While I don't think this book will change lives, it's feel-good approach will be welcomed by individuals who shy away from theology-based religious publications.
