A Bible for dummies.......2004-08-20
A very good introductionary book for students or engineers. Considers main classical conspects of ion transport, thermodynamics and conductivity. I've found a number of concepts in the contemporary papers and books that would be derived from the basics, described by the book. It would also be helpful for scientists/engineers who are not in the chemistry physics or chemistry. Requires basics of calculus. And yeah, much much less than $$$ XXXX pages useless "all-included" type of handbooks). The only disadvantage is that the bibliography can be extended according to the modern needs.

This is an excellent book. It is well written and nicely illustrated. It covers all physical aspects of the planet, including geology, weather, and the environment. The only negative thing I could think of is that it's so hard to find, now that it's out of print.

Scant physical explanation........2001-04-20
Venables' text fairly thoroughly covers modern surface science techniques. He summarizes thirty years of fundamental research and hits on modern interest areas. However, for a text labeled as an introduction, very few introductory ideas are adequately explained. Where are the energy level diagrams? Energies associated with various processes are arbitrarily assigned to be positive or negative, and reference energies are never mentioned. Attempts to solve chapter ending problems invariably lead to frustration, as the questions are vague, and the suggested results are impossible to obtain without consulting other, more detailed texts like Dejenqueres and Spanjaard. The sections on crystal growth are impenetrable unless one reads the referenced papers, but this is inexcusable for an introductory text. A more suitable title for the book would be: "A Survey of Surface Science," or "Collected Citations of Surface Science Research: 1970-2000"

A "new" book on surface science........2006-05-19
This book was written by five participating authors. It is not better than Hans Lüth's book, "Solid surfaces, Interfaces and Thin Films", but maybe of comparable quality. However, the authors did a fairly good job in general.
The advantage of this book is that it is written a few years ago and contains a lot of information regarding the developments, innovations and new techniques of surface science. The schemes and charts are well-drawn and well-presented. The photographs of some instruments and experimental results are especially useful and make this book better in some sense. The image qualities and resolutions are very fine.
There is a good balance between theoretical and experimental discussions. The references are very beneficial for detailed studies. In general, it is a very well-written book, something you expect form Springer Verlag.
