    Book Description

In this book Peter Lindert evaluates environmental concerns about soil degradation in two very large countries--China and Indonesia--where anecdotal evidence has suggested serious problems. Lindert does what no scholar before him has done: using new archival data sets, he measures changes in soil productivity over long enough periods of time to reveal the influence of human activity.

China and Indonesia are good test cases because of their geography and history. China has been at the center of global concerns about desertification and water erosion, which it may have accelerated with intense agriculture. Most of Indonesia¹s lands were created by volcanoes and erosion, and its rapid deforestation and shifting slash-burn agriculture have been singled out for international censure.

Lindert's investigation suggests that human mismanagement is not on average worsening the soil quality in China and Indonesia. Human cultivation lowers soil nitrogen and organic matter, but has offsetting positive effects. Economic development and rising incomes may even lead to better soil. Beyond the importance of Lindert's immediate findings, this book opens a new area of study--quantitative soil history--and raises the standard for debating soil trends.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Innovative use of archival data for soil degradation trends.......2002-05-17

The title of the book is an allusion to the widely known and influential Losing Ground by Eckholm (1976), one of the early doom-sayers, who like several writers after him warned of the dangers of soil erosion and the impending calamity in food security. Lindert came, with respect to China and Indonesia, to a different conclusion which is partly unconvincing. He deals with arable soils only, representing a small percentage of the total area. His methodology of using archival soil analyses is innovative, but using data for total P and total K and an uncommon statistical analysis, makes the findings very doubtful and unconvincing. The overall picture is more complicated, with patchy improvements as concluded here, but also with well documented severe local erosion and desertification examples, disregarded in this treatment. Recommended for a serious evaluation and as a challenge for obtaining better data for such trend analyses.

      Book Description

Knowledge of the principles and methods of petroleum sedimentology is essential for oil and gas exploration and exploitation. This book is designed as an introductory text for students in petroleum geology and applied sedimentology as well as a useful companion for advanced technicians, explorationists, geophysicists and petroleum engineers. Source rock, lithology and type of trap define the quality of a hydrocarbon accumulation. This interrelationship is exemplified by seven case histories worldwide (NW Europe, Saudi Arabia, U.S.A., Mexico, CIS, China). Moreover, successful exploitation and enhanced oil recovery often depend on an adequate knowledge of the sedimentology of a reservoir. Photographs illustrate macroscopic and microscopic aspects of source rocks as well as reservoir sandstones and limestones that are most important for hydrocarbon exploration. A comprehensive list of references encourages further study.

      5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2002-03-06

The Stubborn Earth is an excellent examination of American agricultural policy in China during the first half of the twentieth century. This book manages to be both a scholarly resource for those that study East Asian history academically and easy to understand for the average reader. It effectively ties into the greater story of Western exploitation of China that began early in the nineteenth century. The stories contained within are interesting and thought provoking. The book is a must for anyone that wishes to understand the past relationship between the United States and China, and the effect that relationship has had on the perceptions of both countries today.

Site and Geomaterial Characterization addresses issues ranging from the micro-characterization of processes to the in situ evaluation of engineering properties of soils. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains over 40 technical papers that were presented at the GeoShanghai Conference held in Shanghai, China from June 6-8, 2006. This book is divided into four main sections, with all of the papers addressing one of the greatest challenges in geotechnical engineering research and practice: the evaluation of geomaterial properties with minimal to no disturbance states. The first section includes the general theme paper by James K. Mitchell, University Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, who focuses on the study of physico-chemical behavior of soils, soil improvement and geomaterial characterization. The second section is completely devoted to recognizing the services of Dr. Mehmet T. Tumay, Georgia Gulf Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University, for his immense contribution to research and practice in geotechnical engineering. The third section covers non-destructive evaluation and geophysical testing to address soil characterization problems relevant to foundation exploration, geoenvironmental evaluation and earthquake related topics. Finally, the fourth section contains other in situ testing methods that deal with the analysis of field data and interpretation of soil properties, as well as simulation of in situ testing using numerical methods.

          Book Description

This classic text by Fei Xiaotong, China's finest social scientist, was first published in 1947 and is Fei's chief theoretical statement about the distinctive characteristics of Chinese society. Written in Chinese from a Chinese point of view for a Chinese audience, From the Soil describes the contrasting organizational principles of Chinese and Western societies, thereby conveying the essential features of both. Fei shows how these unique features reflect and are reflected in the moral and ethical characters of people in these societies. This profound, challenging book is both succinct and accessible. In its first complete English-language edition, it is likely to have a wide impact on Western social theorists.
Gary G. Hamilton and Wang Zheng's translation captures Fei's jargonless, straightforward style of writing. Their introduction describes Fei's education and career as a sociologist, the fate of his writings on and off the Mainland, and the sociological significance of his analysis. The translators' epilogue highlights the social reforms for China that Fei drew from his analysis and advocated in a companion text written in the same period.

              Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on agricultural and horticultural machinery for soil preparation or cultivation, lawn or sports ground rollers, and their parts in China face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying agricultural and horticultural machinery for soil preparation or cultivation, lawn or sports ground rollers, and their parts to China? How important is China compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of agricultural and horticultural machinery for soil preparation or cultivation, lawn or sports ground rollers, and their parts vary from one country of origin to another in China? On the supply side, China also exports agricultural and horticultural machinery for soil preparation or cultivation, lawn or sports ground rollers, and their parts. Which countries receive the most exports from China? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for agricultural and horticultural machinery for soil preparation or cultivation, lawn or sports ground rollers, and their parts in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for agricultural and horticultural machinery for soil preparation or cultivation, lawn or sports ground rollers, and their parts for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where China fits into the world market for imported and exported agricultural and horticultural machinery for soil preparation or cultivation, lawn or sports ground rollers, and their parts. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for China in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that China is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize China compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

                      Book Description

This book deals with models and model-building in classical and quantum physics; it relies on logic and the philosophy of science as well as on modern mathematics. The reader will also find vistas into the history of ideas. The philosophical analysis is based on the separation of syntax and semantics, which is at the root of Kolmogorov's theory of probability; recursive functions and algorithmic complexity are used to discuss entropy and randomness. Basic concepts are discussed, together with concrete physical models for phase transitions, scaling, renormalization semigroups, and the irreversible approach to equilibrium. The book is intended for mathematicians, physicists and philosophers of science, both researchers and graduate students.

If you have written something funny and you're wondering, "How in the world would I go about publishing this?", this is the perfect book for you. Or, if you haven't yet written anything funny, want to try your hand at it, and don't know where to start, this is the book for you.

This book gives detailed suggestions on how to break into any number of comedy markets, including stand-up, television, film, radio, books, theater, newspapers, magazines, and even greeting cards and corporate speech-writing. The author is himself an accomplished comedian. And, though the book is serious about getting you started, it does make you laugh from time to time.

To supplement his own advice, the author includes numerous quotes, suggestions, and anecdotes from other famous comedians and comedy professionals, such as the vice-president of development at Comedy Central, and writers for shows such as Saturday Night Live, the Jon Stewart Show, Cheers, Frasier, Married with Children, and many more. And finally, the author includes no shortage of further reading suggestions including books, periodicals, and directories of contact names.
