This is a great book for those of you who love aromatherapy yet want to incorporate the sense of regognizing how the combinations of color and scent can effect people in great ways.

It is nice to have an approach other than what is taught is the US that makes sense and is easy to follow. Not hocus pocus, just sound advice and an inforamtion packed book.

Great additition to those in aromatherapy already as well as those just started out. Gets you started on the right foot!

Very Disorganized.......2007-07-28

I do not understand these favorable reviews. This book is terribly disorganized. It jumps from subject to subject and does not teach or explain weather systems in an understandable manner. Though it is filled with fun facts and sidebars, it does not lay down fundamentals and then build on these fundamentals, which is the basis of any scientific text. Unfortunately I have not found a better laymen's text on weather and weather systems.

If you have ever wanted to learn the how's and why's of weather, this is the book for you. You will understand everything you need to know about how storms form, highs and lows, jet stream, usa weather patterns, coriolis effect, thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, wind, and so on. This book is very easy to read and understand and has excellent graphics for helping you to see what is being written about. There are college courses that use this book as their textbook (DU Forecasting and Meteorology). I have used this book to help me in teaching 9th grade Meteorology.

Excellent Photos, Excellent Figures.......2006-02-27

First of all, let me say that I normally think of the U.S.A. Today newspaper as a cheap news sources that only should be read if desperate for reading material at the airport. With that said, I will say they do have excellent graphics for explaining weather events and that has transerred to this book. I teach a university weather/climate course and use the figures frequently, they are much better than any other text. Plus, they provide explanations that deviate from the jargon I had hammered into my head during my academic past.

Good overview of orbital mechanics and space history.......2001-02-15

This book is about half what it says in the title, covering the details of orbital mechanics: getting into orbit, changing orbits, and rendezvous. In the second part, it turns more historical, providing brief overviews of both the manned and unmanned space programs, focusing particularly on the space shuttle and on interplanetary expeditions. It's about as clearly and as simply written as a book on such a topic could be and is sumptuously illustrated with appropriate diagrams, photographs, and tables.

I quibbled with the occasional inaccuracy on non-central subjects: Michael Collins may now be "pursuing a career in international diplomacy," but after he left the astronaut corps he first became the director of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. And Apollo 13 was never in danger of running out of air, since the lunar module needed plenty of extra oxygen to vent out the cabin at the beginning of each moonwalk. But those are peripheral to the core and only of interest to a nitpicker like me, who starts looking for other inaccuracies rather than continuing to pay full attention to the text.

It would also have been nice to see more about the technology of space flight than just the orbital mechanics. For example, it might have been worthwhile to discuss the sort of instruments that get put on board a spacecraft and the technology that a satellite uses to determine its position.

But anyhow, the book is very good at what it covers. I would recommend it highly to someone who is just learning about space flight, though only mildly to someone who already knows the basic concepts.

A simple, no equations introduction to Space Flight.......1996-11-13

To Rise From Earth is a good introduction to the science of space flight. A combination of history and science, this well illustrated book explains the basic science of space flight, orbital mechanics and flying to other planets at a level that should be understandable by a high school student.

The book is profusely illustrated, and full of marginal comments - Historical facts, Scientific facts, Rules of thumb - which make it very dippable. True to its intent, it explains the pricipals of space flight clearly, without using a single equation.

As well as the theory, the book also gives a history of space flight, from the first experiments with rockects by Goddard and von Braun, through the American manned space programs (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo), with a large chapter devoted to the Space Shuttle. A review of unmanned planetary probes is also given, along with a final chapter on future exploration of Mars.

Throughout the book focuses on the American space program. One of its shortcomings is that the Russian space program is almost completely ignored. Also some of the Scientific and Historical facts given are wrong.

Good Book, Title Slightly Misleading .......2006-02-17

I agree this is a quick and enjoyable read. It's one Awo's account of how the Orisa have brought physical healing, deliverance from harm, forgiveness for transgressions and understanding in living. However I bought the book SPECIFICALLY because it mentioned Ori, Ifa and Orisa worshipin the title and to my disappointment this book is a memoir, and provides no instructional material, historical background, or introduction of spiritual sciences to light. He merely choosing to refer to our spiritual practices in this way, which in retrospect is excellent - but just confusing as a book title.

checked this out from the library, but had to purchase it! first of all, i knew NOTHING about gardening, so this gave me a starting point and help with the basics. i am slowly learning ... and have started my first vegetable garden! while there are very FEW pictures, the info itself was valuable to me. i have a book that is chock-full of pics, but the text is designed for a novice or advanced gardener. i love to look at that (other) book, but i needed something very basic to begin with- and this is it! good price for all the info you get. a must for those just starting out from scratch! good luck & have fun with your hands in the dirt!

You can build this entire aircraft, including the engine, for under $200. The detailed article shows how to construct the aircraft (from reinforced, corrugated cardboard), and how to convert an inexpensive weed trimmer engine for use as an aircraft powerplant. There are over a dozen technical articles,on covering and finishing techniques (with both Monokote film coverings, and conventional fabric and paint), control linkage geometry, converting a large scale ARF (almost ready to fly model) to electric power, duplicating full scale panel lines and fabric rib stitching, and how to calculate the wing loading, mean aerodynamic chord, etc. to make sure that your model will fly properly. There is even an article on photographing full scale aircraft, to use for research and documentation purposes on your scale model project. Whenever I hear Baxter Black's name mentioned on NPR, my ears take notice. And excerpts from this, his latest offering, are just plain funny, touching, and wonderful! (Note, the poem about his first dance with his daughter and his poem about his pickup truck.) He makes the most common of things and events come sharply into focus until they become uncommonly interesting. If you're looking for entertainment that won't offend the senses and leaves you with that fresh after the rain sense of serenity, you won't do any better than Baxter Black!

Ambrosia contains some of the most amusing anecdotes about the South. With the Sweet Potato Queens, and the Ya - Ya Sisterhood so popular, this is a great companion!! The photography of Vicksburg Antebellum and Tour Homes entice you to spend your next vacation visiting the city, touring the homes, meeting the contributors, and sampling the food. I have yet to discover a recipe contained in this book that does not elicit raves from all I serve them to. We never have a cocktail party without Checkerboard Cheese and Crawfish Struedel. The South as a culture is exemplified by the homes and locations featured, the delightful stories told by the residents and the food which one friend of mine says "Everything has cream cheese, whipping cream or some equally rich ingredient". She's a dietician, but at my table her plate is always clean and seconds are a must for her. Ambrosia contains something for all book lovers.
