Needs to be edited.......2007-07-31
I have never seen a technical book with so many editing errors. It is obvious that the book did not receive thorough editing prior to publication.
The book has 17 chapters and the first 5 seem pretty good. Then, the errors start to appear. The following questions have either: 1) incorrect answers, 2) no correct answers listed, 3) improper syntax in the question, making it impossible to obtain the answer as written, 4) a question missing text, 5) a question missing necessary information to complete the problem, 6) missing text to even identify what the problem is, 7) improperly balanced equations (wherein the balancing is not part of the problem), 8) incorrectly listed values, such as reduction potential, 9) two of the same correct answer, or 10) the worked solution is in error by incorrectly stating a theory:

Organic chemistry review, drill 2, #1.
Organic chemistry review, drill 3, #1.
Page 507 is missing figures.
Page 585 is missing a formula.
I do not intend to claim these are the only errors in the book. I noted errors as I read the book, and merely typed them here as I thumbed back through it.
The book's approach seems strategically sound. It does provide a good, quick refresher of chemistry theory, which is exactly what I bought it for. It doesn't have a lot of detail. But, I don't believe that is the intent of the book. For more detail, get a textbook.
There were a few cases where problems covering a concept were presented, then the concept was presented later in the text. This "cart before the horse" was sometimes frustrating. But, the reader will be rewarded if he keeps reading.
I generally like REA's products. This one has good potential, but REA should edit it before re-printing.
For those who have the book, the list of errors should help working through the text. However, as I stated, I'm not claiming the list to be all inclusive.

i used this book to review for the GRE chemistry exam and I was blown away by the book's thorough review of all relevent information. This book would be useful for anyone who has to take a standardized test focusing on chemistry!

Customer Reviews:
A rare work.......2007-07-05
This book is indeed clear and easy to read and undoubtedly useful for advanced undergraduates and I imagine it would be a good review for would-be postgraduates. It also introduces more advanced topics, such as the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations and introduces many topical issues. Very good at conveying the mathematical 'tricks of the trade' but unlike so many texts on quantum physics, this book is actually a physics book! Not only does it deal with the mathematical structure of the theory, but it has a satisfying and detailed presentation of the experiments! It is also superbly illustrated (as all text books should be!). I find that too many authours these days seem to care more for the maths than the physics - let us not forget what physics is for! In my mind this is one of the best advanced undergraduate quantum physics texts that I have seen. It is also a great educational work - solutions to problems are provided which is essential for self-study, which this book is admirably suited for (in addition to being quite suitable for directly supporting a taught course). This book is very student friendly, a rare thing these days, and far more readable and entertaining than many other books on quantum physics.
OK book on Atom Physics.......2000-08-18
This book is very readable and very clear. It can be used in advanced undergrad courses on atom physics. It treats the development of Atom Physics theory and experiments (Rutherford, Bohr etc.). It provides explanations to many practical quantum problems in the field of atom physics, so it can also be used to clarify problems in a Quantum Physics course. Some example problems briefly discussed in books like Gasiorowicz or David Griffiths on QF were very well explained here. Quite complete on the subject of Atom Physics. Exercises with (brief) solutions. German authors seem to have done a thorough job. Negative points: heavy, expensive, limited subject, published some time ago. I consider it a good buy afterall.

Description:
In the sixth section of his light quantum paper of 1905, Einstein presented the miraculous argument, as I shall call it. Pointing out an analogy with ideal gases and dilute solutions, he showed that the macroscopic, thermodynamic properties of high-frequency heat radiation carry a distinctive signature of finitely many, spatially localized, independent components and so inferred that it consists of quanta. I describe how Einstein's other statistical papers of 1905 had already developed and exploited the idea that the ideal gas law is another macroscopic signature of finitely many, spatially localized, independent components and that these papers in turn drew on his first two, ''worthless'' papers of 1901 and 1902 on intermolecular forces. However, while the ideal gas law was a secure signature of independence, it was harder to use as an indicator that there are finitely many components and that they are spatially localized. Further, since his analysis of the ideal gas law depended on the assumption that the number of components was fixed, its use was precluded for heat radiation, whose component quanta vary in number in most processes. So Einstein needed and found another, more powerful signature of discreteness applicable to heat radiation and which indicated all these properties. It used one of the few processes, volume fluctuation, in which heat radiation does not alter the number of quanta.

Book Description
With the development of new materials and processes, living with chronic pain and dysfunction in extremities due to arthritis and other debilitating joint conditions has become unnecessary. There are techniques and products that make it possible to remove painful and unusable joints and replace them with new, artificial joints. Two successful approaches to treat lower extremities are now commonplace: total hip replacement and total knee replacement.
This SourceBook is divided into two separate sections for each type of care.
Choose from 13 learning objectives covering:
- Need for hip replacement
- Readiness for hip replacement
- Complications from and interventions for hip replacement
- Exercises for hip replacement clients
- Assistive devices

Intraseasonal, Large-Scale Circulations and Tropical Cyclone Activity Over the Western North Pacific During Boreal Summer
Manufacturer: Storming Media
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Spiral-bound
ASIN: 1423518527 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A579424. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Large-scale circulations in the 15-25 day period over the western North Pacific during northern summer were determined using the leading modes of a Singular Value Decomposition of 850 hPa winds and outgoing longwave radiation. Composites were constructed to define the wave patterns' structural characteristics. Their evolution is characterized by alternating cyclonic and anticyclonic equatorial anomalies that are linked to anomalous convective activity. Mid-latitude perturbations appear to contribute to the growth of new equatorial disturbances. Variability within the cycle is examined relative to variations in the basic state vertical wind shear and zonal wind convergence or divergence in the region equator-10 deg N, 140 deg E-160 deg E. For the 50 cases in a basic state with easterly vertical wind shear and convergence, westward- moving waves propagate farther northwestward, wavelength contraction is greater, their orientation changes from east-west to southwest-northeast, and waves appear to be coupled with a Southern Hemisphere mid-latitude wave train. For the zonal wind divergence set, wave activity occurs farther eastward, circulations maintain a longer wavelength and more zonal orientation, and linkage with the Southern Hemisphere mid-latitudes is minimal. A statistically-significant relationship exists between the 15-25 day wave phase and tropical cyclone activity. Formation frequency and preferred locations are modulated by the 15-25 day wave.

The Jan Mayen Current from 1989 and 1990 Summer Data

ASIN: 1423573501 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A328023. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: As part of the Greenland Sea Project, a hydrographic survey consisting of 45 CTD stations was conducted in the vicinity of the Jan Mayen Current (JMC) in August 1990 aboard the USNS BARTLETT to further characterize and quantify circulation of the JMC. Comparisons were made with a similar survey performed in September 1989. In the summer of 1990, as in 1989, the JMC appears to be both a portion of the East Greenland Current (EGC) flowing eastward to close the Greenland Sea Gyre (GSG) and an anticyclonic meander in the EGC flow north of Jan Mayen. Geostrophic velocities and transports were similar for 1990 and 1989 with typical near-surface speeds of 3 cm/s slowing to 1 cm/s at depth. The total input flow to the JMC from the EGC is estimated at 1.45 Sv for August 1990 compared to 2 Sv during September 1989. Baroclinic calculations for 1990 data indicate that the meander portion of the JMC is concentrated in the upper waters (approx 100 m) with the result that 44% of the upper layer and 25% of lower layer (approx 100 - 1000 m) flow contributes to the JMC meander. The remainder, 56% from the surface and 75% from the lower layer, continues eastward as throughput to the GSG. Similarly, in 1989, it was determined that about half of the upper layer flow is involved in the meander with flow becoming more easterly with depth.

Predictors of Plebe Summer Attrition at the United States Naval Academy
Manufacturer: Storming Media

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A851714. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis analyzes the relationship between entry-level variables available to the Office of Admissions and plebe summer attrition at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). The study used independent samples t-tests and linear regression analysis to analyze the effects of individual variables on plebe summer attrition and also used binary logistic regression to develop an overall predictive model of plebe summer attrition. Analysis was conducted on the USNA classes that completed plebe summer from 1995-2002 (N = 9,554). The results of this study indicate the highest plebe summer attrition is attributed to majority females, females in general and midshipmen who exceed the limits of the height/weight table and are not recruited athletes. The lowest plebe summer attrition rates are found among children of service academy graduates, recruited varsity athletes, summer seminar attendees, minority males and older midshipmen. This study summarizes the results and also offers recommendations to the Naval Academy and for future research.

Two great reviews!.......2005-06-27
"The entertaining social angst of narrator Cathy provides lots of laughs, amid some real food for thought about the pitfalls of pretending about feelings, as Cathy sorts out her relationships with Dan and Steve. Her woes are humorously depicted, and particularly funny is the embarrassment suffered by Cathy at one of "the world's last" drive-in movies.
The humor is balanced with Ann Herrick's insight into the universal and realistic intensity of the characters' emotions."

Sara Sawyer, The Romance Studio
"Author Ann Herrick certainly knows her audience! The story line, characters, dialogue and even the setting will all appeal to the young adult reader... readers will connect with the summer romance plot... There are also some truly humorous moments... Cathy's eagerness and awkwardness leap off the pages to touch readers' hearts, or bring a grin or two.
Summer Replacement is a great book in any season!"
Joyce, Love Romances
"Summer Replacement is a great teen love story...lots of angst, lots of funny moments, some steamy kisses, and a great heroine. Ann Herrick does a wonderful job of portraying Cathy's teenage crush, making it seem very realistic.
...Summer Replacement is a sunny romance fit for the beach and will make you want to remember your own first crush."
Sarah, Fallen Angel Reviews

"...Summer Replacement is a fun story about a teenage summer romance. I had my daughter read this story and tell me what she thought about it. She said that she really liked it and didn't want it to end. ...get a copy of it and enjoy."
Lydia Funneman, Writers Unlimited
"...The appealing and sympathetic characters struggle valiantly through misunderstandings and confusion, and I identified all too well with Cathy's anxiety as she tried to ascertain Dan's true feelings for her.
SUMMER REPLACEMENT captured the essence of the freedom and sweetness of teenage summer romances in an engaging and believable story."
Melinda Stanners, Romantic Interludes
"...With Summer Replacement Ann Herrick has produced a delightful tale ... The light romantic overtone, personable reality presented by Cathy as she muddles along...
Characters are well fleshed out .... Settings are described in enough detail to draw the reader into them. We hear the crash of the sea during storm, feel the grit of the sand...while reading the words presented by talented author Herrick.
Summer Replacement is a quick fun read certain to be read and reread...Cathy, as are most fifteen-year-olds, is a delight.
Summer Replacement will be a nice addition to the home and school library.
Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend."
Molly Martin, 20+ years classroom teacher
SUMMER REPLACEMENT is a sweet, fast-paced romance...Cathy is a believable bundle of contradictions-alternately brazen and shy, thoughtless and caring, smart and naive -- and as real a fifteen year old as any you'll find on the written page...I particularly liked how Ms. Herrick handled the very common problem of the girl being satisfied with kisses when the boy wants considerably more -- with sympathy and understanding for both parties and a good dose of humor.
...Ms. Herrick gives the reader many reasons to like Cathy, and some of the best come out during her interactions with the younger children.
...SUMMER REPLACEMENT is perfect -- a young adult romance with just the right balance of humor and heart. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed reading this story; it took me back to a time when I was a teenage girl and how confusing that period was. It is funny how the things we see so clearly when we're older are so muddled then. The author provides a nice breezy summer read

Variations in Coastal circulation off Central California, Spring-Summer 1993, 1994, 1995
Manufacturer: Storming Media
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Spiral-bound
ASIN: 1423576616 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A501523. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In situ measurements of hydrographic, wind and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data, along with satellite imagery, were collected off central California during the upwelling season of three successive years, 1993, 1994 and 1995. The survey was conducted three times in the late spring of each year within 75 km of the coastline from Point Reyes south to Cypress Point, along a region of irregular coastline and bathymetry. The upwelling circulation was found to be distinct from the California Current System and unlike circulation defined in recent conceptual models for this region. Persistent or recurring circulation features were observed throughout the upwelling season that acted as dynamic boundaries to this system. A varied response by upwelling centers in this region to a fairly uniform wind field was also observed. Water upwelled within this system is considered to recirculate and mix, retained within the system for a relatively long period of time. This long retention period of upwelled water is thought to promote the high productivity associated with coastal upwelling. The circulation patterns found in this region, and the dynamic boundaries to the principal equatorward current may represent upwelling circulation at multiple locations in this and in other eastern boundary current systems, inshore of the principal equatorward current.
