Love it!!.......2006-06-28
I have to say, before I got this book I lacked the initiative to pick up the phone. Of course if it wasn't business related then it was okay and I would call. But to call a customer, I was nervous. After reading through this book, scared no longer am I. I recommend this to anyone having trouble picking up the phone to call. The phone is your cash register and who doesn't like to hear cha-ching!!!

The Western Writer's of America ranked these four stories as the best short stories of the 20th century, but they have never been collected in one book until now. This edition is destined to earn a place in every western library!
Customer Reviews:
is these all of the short stories.......2006-03-14
From the time I was is Junior High the series of Short Stories in the book "A Man Called Horse" was among my favorite things to read and it remains so today. One thing I would take from the site is that it does not directly reference which short stories are included.
About the author I think that her character development fits more with the style of a Jack London than others who are referenced. To my mind she is among the top three of the story tellers in American Literature.
DESERVED RECOGNITION:.......2006-01-16
This reprint of several of the great stories of Dorothy Johnston is an invaluable reminder of a great and unlikely talent in the Western genre. I have to confess I'd no idea that two of the classic Western movies, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and A Man Called Horse, were not only based on source material by the same author but a woman to boot. Reading the stories together here it becomes obvious that, though seemingly dissimilar, the tales are linked--as is in particular--by the theme of people trying to sculpt personal characters that they can be proud of, or at least live with. The man called Horse, for instance, has come West, despite being of a good family in New England, because he wanted to "live among his equals--people who were no better than he and no worse either." But when he is captured by the Crow Indians he is made a slave, little better than a horse. However, when he finds himself fighting with dogs for a chunk of meat he resolves that while he may be no better than a horse he is above the dogs, and so he begins to establish the boundaries of an acceptable persona and by the end of the story becomes a decent enough man that he makes a surprising self-sacrifice. Similarly, the tale of Ransome Foster, in Liberty Valance, resolves to a simple determination: "When I die, sometime today, he thought, they won't say I'm a coward." Indeed, the great strength of Ms Johnson as a story-teller, something lost in the epic film versions, is that she stripped away all clutter to get to the essentials of these characters.
As it turns out, Ms Johnson was quite a character in her own right--Dorothy M. Johnson: Taleteller was everyman's interpreter and guide to Montana and the West (JEFF HERMAN, The Missoulian)--and it's a wonderful thing to see her get the recognition she deserves.
Genius Rediscovered in New Publication.......2005-08-06
`The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' is a republication of some of the best stories of Dorothy Johnson, America's most unrecognized genius of short fiction. Two of these four stories are taken from `Indian Country' (later published as `Man Called Horse'), a brilliant collection of Western tales that deserves to be back in print. Three of them were made into successful movies. All four of these tales show the mark of genius that was typical of Johnson's work.
Time Magazine compared Dorothy Johnson's work to Bret Harte and Mark Twain, and this was no hyperbole. As works of literature, her Western short stories are nearly without peer, and they are often better than many histories in accurately portraying the detail and nuance of Native, frontier, and Mountain Man cultures.
The first of the four stories in this volume, `A Man Called Horse', is a tale of a young man raised in a wealthy Eastern family who went West, was captured by Crow Indians, and spent several years living among them. It details the ways in which he changed to adapt and survive, and the lessons that he learned from the experience. This theme of whites living with Indians and the effect the dramatic change of culture could have was one of Johnson's favorites, and one she captured better in her writing than anyone else. This story was made into a movie in 1970, starring Richard Harris.
In `The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance', we see another of Johnson's recurring themes - the less than noble truth that often was concealed by the heroic legends that grew out of the West. It is the story of a young greenhorn who rose to fame and fortune on the back of a legend that was a lie. This story was made into the classic 1962 movie, the last by the great director John Ford, and starred John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart.
`Lost Sister' returns to the theme of whites living among the Indians, but this time we see it from the perspective of a family being reunited with a sister who had lived as a native for thirty years after being captured as a child. Nowhere is the clash of cultures better shown than in this story of the painful attempt to re-integrate this family member who had gone completely native over the years, and who only desired to return to the life and place she knew as home.
The final story in this collection, `The Hanging Tree', is actually a novella. It is an expertly told tale of the tangled lives and fates of three people in a rough gold mining camp. It explores how those who went west often were cut completely loose from their past, freely re-invented themselves, and lived lives where the personal myths or nightmares that they created for themselves often had more power than reality. This story was made into the 1959 movie starring Gary Cooper (in his final role), Karl Malden, and a young George C. Scott.
Anyone with an interest in the American West should be thrilled by this collection and left hungry and searching for more of the brilliant writings of Dorothy Johnson. I give it my highest recommendation.

Between the midnight feedings and the diaper issue, it's never easy being a new parent. But when you're also a high-school student trying to graduate, the job becomes even more overwhelming. Sam Pettigrew never dreamed he'd spend his senior year pushing a stroller. But when his former girlfriend, Brittany, decided that she couldn't handle being a parent, Sam knew he had to try. Now attending an alternative high school that provides daycare, Sam desperately juggles homework and parenting duties. "The list above my desk said, 'Get Max to sleep by 9:00.' Right under 'Drink out of a cup' and 'nap schedule.' I couldn't even remember what 'nap schedule' meant. " Sam's biggest problem is his lack of support: Brittany has left town to start over, and Sam's widowed father, angry over Sam's decision, refuses to help Sam other than financially. Claire Bailey, another teen parent, only serves to show Sam how alone he is--her family loves to babysit and buy toys for her baby, Emily. Finally, after a disastrous night spent in the emergency room when Max cuts his hand, Sam becomes defeated. How much longer can he keep up this crazy schedule of school and fatherhood? Yet, how can he bear not to keep it up, when giving it up means giving up Max?
With this kind of subject matter, it would be easy for seasoned author Margaret Bechard to slip into didactic "after-school special" mode. Instead she has penned a truly tender, reversed-gender tearjerker with an ending as realistic as it is heartbreaking. A four-hankie recommended read. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
It's Sam Pettigrew's last year of high school. And he's spending it figuring out how, at age seventeen, he is supposed to care for his baby son, Max.
Max wasn't part of the plan. He wasn't even part of the backup plan. But he's here now, and Sam is attending an alternative high school with other teen parents like himself. Talk about a wake-up call. But Sam is determined to make it work, to show everyone -- his dad, his new girlfriend, himself -- that he has what it takes to be a good dad.
Trading footballs for diaper bags and college brochures for feeding schedules, Sam gives fatherhood his best shot. Only no one told him it would be this hard. What if his best isn't good enough?

This Book Was So Great - Finished it in less than a day!.......2007-03-04
I was a bit hesitant at first to read this book, because I didn't want it to be a cliche teenage pregnancy story. But, I proved myself wrong after reading less than a page. I knew this story would hold a special place in my heart - And now that I've finished it, it does.
Without leaking too much of the plot, Sam [The main character and father of baby Max] is dealing with so much stress. I loved how the book went back and forth from present day text, discussing what was going on at that moment, and then the next chapter was a flashback which helped you understand a bit of Sam's thoughts and actions.
The ending of this story wanted to make me cry, I am positive it will tug at your heart strings as well. If you're looking for a story that involves mature, life changing decisions and a different kind of love story, then Hanging Onto Max is your answer.
Hanging on to Max Review.......2006-06-01
"Hanging on to Max" is a novel about a teenage single parent who has a young son. Sam is 17 years old and his son in Max. Sam has a hard life he is trying to juggle a million different schedules he has to go to school, do his homework, take care of Max, and hang out with friends. Sam finds out that its hard to take care of his son and try to do things that normal high school students do. Sam feels it is too hard to take care of Max so Sam decides to give Max up for adoption in the end. Sam gives Max up for adoption because he doesn't want Max to make the same mistakes he did and he wants Max to have a better life than he did. That is a quick summary on the novel "Hanging on to Max."
I liked this book a lot, I liked this novel because it can relate to many high school student's lives. It can show high school students how hard it is to take care of a baby and try to do normal high school things. I feel every high school students should read this book because it shows us how much your life will change if you have a child. I loved this book but it was a little jumpy because the author would jump from the present to the past and back to the present. I liked this novel and feel all high school students should read this book. This novel is a great novel and everyone should read it.
Hanging on to Max.......2006-06-01
The book Hanging On To Max is a great book by Margret Bechard. The book is about a teenage boy named sam who is trying to raise a baby boy named Max. max's mother , Brittany, put him up for adoption and sam could not bare to let him go, so sam took the resposiblity to take Max and raise him all alone. At only the age of seven-teen, sam is still attending school and taking care of rasing Max. max and sam go through so much together because Max comes first. He is sam's biggest priority. Having a baby is tuff enough, but going to school and still living a teenage like is much harder. In the story sam meets his high school crush again. Her name is Claire Bailey. She also has a new baby as a teenager and her boyfriend is no longer around to help. Claire and sam are stuck in the same boat, both alone with little kids. They then being doing things together. As a whole they have fun, them and the kids. They go through many obsticals leading up to sam deciding that he must give Max up for adoption. Sam is a young kid who was not ready for the resposibilty of a new son. He had fun with him and Max together, but he does the better for him so he doesn't make the same mistakes he did.
Hanging On To Max.......2006-06-01
The book Hanging On To Max is a very good book but in ways kind of hard to understand due to the way the author wrote it. I liked it a lot though due the fact the i can relate to it my friends are young teenagers and are having kid its sad but its the real world.
A Good Read.......2006-06-01
My group read the novel, Hanging on to Max. This book was about a teenage guy, named Sam, whose girlfriend had gotten pregnant. She decided to give the baby up for adoption and before Sam could even think it through, he told her he would keep the baby. Throughout the novel, you get to see how much a baby really does affect your life. Sam could no longer play sports or hang out with friends. He had to go to an alternative school, where he could bring Max with him. Sam did not realize how hard it would be to finish high school and raise a child at the same time. His dreams of college had faded away and getting a job to pay for his expenses was his main priority. Sam also has to face his disappointed father at different times in the book. The end of the story can be left for you to read!
This novel really does have an important message for all teenagers. It shows you what a little mistake could do and how one life can change dramatically in the blink of an eye. This novel also helps people appreciate teenage parents. A lot of people look down at them because they have a child at a young age. Well, everyone makes mistakes. It gives people a new respect for how hard teen-parents work and the struggles they go through. I think this was a really great book and everyone should read it!

"HILARIOUS. . . A CHARMING, ENTERTAINING READ."
--Los Angeles Times
"WONDERFUL. . . Eve Mozell is having a lousy day, and she hasn't even gotten past breakfast yet. Her father, a senile ex-alcoholic whose idea of a good joke is goosing his woman doctor, started phoning Eve at 6 a.m. Her teenage son, who alternately ignores and lectures her, is off to a séance. ('You know, Mom, all doors are entrances. Think about it.') And a quick glance in the mirror turns out to be a big mistake. Oh, God, is that my face? . . . I need a vacation. No. This is just me. Me at forty-four. . . . What a terrific debut."
--Newsweek
"TRUE AND TOUCHING."

Customer Reviews:
Still, it's 10x better than the movie.......2003-08-31
Nora Ephron is brilliant and super-productive. While Hanging Up is not her best, it's well worth the read (and sure a bazillion times better than the sappy movie). The setup is difficult and conflicted: three daughters trying to cope in their various ways with the senility and death of their father. The girls/women are very different, and much of the book is heavy on telephone dialogue as they stay in touch with each other and try to make sense of their past: divorce, abandonment by their mother, alcoholism, and the eventual dementia of their father. All that phone conversation, however, gets tiresome, and the daughters suffer from an excess of vapidity and other irritating qualities. Still, it's pretty good.
This Is My Life.......2002-10-04
This story is what I am living through now, but my life is not quite as funny. The story is very close to home for me - though funnier than what I am experiencing. I felt as though Delia Ephron had interviewed me to get her story line! Even if you are lucky enough not to be able to identify with the story personally, you will still gain a great deal from this true-to-life look at fractured families, caregiver trials and hate/love relationships.
Sometimes, It Is Necessary To Disconnect...........2002-06-23
This has to be one of the best books I've ever read. I've read it many times and the quality of Delia's writing is superb. From Eve's troubles with her father, to Georgia's nationally known magazine, to Maddy's consistent wrong choices, this is a book full of non-stop laughter and fun. Sometimes we get so caught up in work, that we're always on the phone and don't take the time to realize that we're missing the most important things in our lives. Sometimes, it is necessary to disconnect. This book has a great moral and you won't be able to put it down. Don't forget to check out the movie (Meg Ryan, Diane Keaton, Lisa Kudrow, Walter Matthau). It's one of the best!
Unplug your phone, grab this book, and enjoy!.......2002-03-13
Hanging Up is about three sisters; Eve , the proclaimed 'doormat', Georgia, the 'self absorbed' magazine editor, and Maddy, the fun loving tv actress. With a dying father on top of many other problems, Eve is forced to take care of him, since the others don't seem to have the time.
Hanging Up is definately one of the best book-to-movie adaptions that stays true to the book, except for a few minor details. In the movie, it's Meg Ryan who gets in the whole "oops i was too busy on my cellphone to look so i accidently hit your car and my insurance is high so can we settle this privately" matter, while in the book it's her son Jesse. Overall, the story is a heartwarming journey through the three sisters estrangement back to their convergence. If you liked the movie, you'll definately like the book.
A good beach book, but the characters are a too whiney.......2000-07-19
Overall, I enjoyed Hanging Up. It's a story of three sisters in a wildly disfunctional family. They communicate pretty much exclusively by phone, mostly over the condition of their increasingly senile father. It was very entertaining at times, but for the most part the oldest and youngest sisters are too self involved, and the middle one is a complete doormat for her father, sisters, and son. There is a bitter tone throughout the novel, yet I still had a hard time putting it down.
