The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A steady state solution of the full, three dimensional Favre averaged Navier Stokes equations, coupled with a second order Reynolds stress turbulence model (RSTM) and an eddy viscosity model were used to numerically simulate oblique injection into supersonic flow. Numerical results were compared to experimental data and the turbulence models were evaluated for accurate prediction of thermomechanical mean flow variables, Reynolds stresses, flowfield shock structure and boundary layer phenomena. The RSTM simulation resulted in physically consistent and accurate predictions for the mean flow and turbulent quantities. Simulations with the eddy viscosity model resulted in non-physical and inconsistent turbulence predictions. RSTM simulations were used to categorize the regions of the barrel shock and identify the shock expansion mechanisms which generate vortical motion in and around the jet plume. Two distinct vortex pairs associated with plume expansion and injectant mixing were identified. These were the recompression shock induced vortices located within the plume and jet induced vortices located outside of the plume.

Flow Analysis (FA) offers a very convenient and fast approach to enhance and automate 'preliminary steps' of analysis (sample dissolution, pretreatments, preconcentrations, etc.) for atomic spectrometric detectors (ASD). Moreover, flow manifolds can ease the well-known problem of sample introduction/presentation to atomisers or even expand the classical scope of atomic/elemental information, characterizing atomic spectrometry, into the realm of molecules and metal-compounds analysis (e.g. by resorting to coupled separation techniques). All these facts could explain both the extraordinary interest for research and the great importance for practical problem-solving achieved nowadays by FA-ASD.

On the threshold of the new millennium when plasma emission and mass spectrometry are so important and popular, the editor considered it timely to produce a book which covers all present atomic detectors and techniques where FA has been or can be advantageously employed. The book has been conceived in three separate parts:
Part I gives the fundamental, instrumentation and potential of FIA as a most versatile sample presentation/introduction system for atomic spectrometry.
Part II provides a modern account of fundamentals, possibilities and applications offered by flow analysis to atomic spectrometry for on-line sample pretreatments, separations and preconcentrations.
Part III deals with applications of FA-ASD combinations to analytical problem-solving in most varied fields and situations.

Book Description

This is a practical guide for first-time and experienced users of Flow Injection Analysis (FIA). It gives, not a detailed theoretical analysis, but a ``nuts and bolts'' approach to the description of the technique and how it can be utilized to solve analytical chemical problems.

The advantages of flow injection, how, when, why and where it works are all fully explained. Criteria for the choice of hardware and useful hints for maintenance are provided. The large variety of detectors suitable to combine with FIA are discussed, as are special modes of operation, their advantages and their limitations, and also conversion of batch methods to FIA methods. Numerous in-depth descriptions of applications of FIA techniques in water, soil, pharmaceutical and industrial analysis are featured, and a complete bibliography is included.

The authors have spent several years demonstrating, lecturing and using FIA and the basic outline of their book closely follows the schedule of the FIA workshops they have taught. It will be an invaluable tool for all chemists who perform analyses on a routine basis.

The concept of flow injection analysis (FIA) was introduced in the mid-seventies. It was preceded by the success of segmented flow analysis, mainly in clinical and environmental analysis. This advance, as well as the development of continuous monitors for process control and environmental monitors, ensured the success of the FIA methodology. As an exceptionally effective means of mechanization for various procedures of wet chemical analysis, the FIA methodology, in use with a whole arsenal of detection methods of modern analytical chemistry, proved to be of great interest to many.

The fast and intensive development of the FIA methodology was due to several factors essential for routine analytical determinations, such as very limited sample consumption, the short analysis time based on a transient signal measurement in a flow-through detector and an on-line carrying out difficult operations of separation, preconcentration or physicochemical conversion of analytes into detectable species.

Twenty-year studies by numerous research groups all over the world have provided significant progress in the theoretical description of dispersion phenomena in FIA and various operations of physicochemical treatment of the analyte. This volume is devoted to the presentation of the current status of development of the instrumentation for FIA and the many fields of its practical applications, based on an extensive bibliography of original research publications.

Amazing books!

Doesn't Have Too Much To Offer (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2007-08-14

So I read this book on how to help pick up women, because the title looks so promising. I read it and basically it doesn't have too much to offer. It doesn't give straight foward help, it kinda beats around the bush. I have learned some new things in this book, such as how to start conversations with women and ask openended questions with them (expect the phrase "Whats your story" about 1000 times). But basically, the information in this book is vague. It does not give instant results like we guys all planned to, but it gives you a starting point and hangs you out to dry on your road to being a PUA instead of a chump.

Being a 20 year old college student and living in a city full of females who are stuck up, I figured this book would help out. Unfortunately, it did not do me too much justice. If you guys found success in this book with the opposite sex, give yourself a pat on the back. Funny that female reviewers (like the one below me), might get a joke out of this book because they go around making others feel like crap. I for one really don't recommend this book because of it's vague subject matter. If you want to read a good book, I recommend How to Succeed with Women, because that book gives more info into detail. THE JIG IS UP!!!.......2007-08-11

It has to be said, guys; WOMEN CAN READ! And we're reading these male dating guides faster than you are and we know all the tricks. Play them and you'll be labeled a loser before you get to flash that charming smile.

I have a college-age daughter and she and her friends have a collection of these books (The Game, Mystery Method, PBDG, etc.) that they pass back and forth and laugh about, belittling guys they've caught in the act of trying to employ what they've read. It's kinda sad.

And worse, every women's talk show has turned these books inside out. Any woman with a television will spot the act and you may lose out on a promising encounter.

Go back to being yourself. You're a lot more attractive than you think!

Basic but available elsewhere.......2007-07-27

While 'The Layguide' does cover the aspects of a succesful pickup, it is a fairly rudimentary guide. All the information in this book is also available in any of the sedution community sites. Fast Seduction has practically this entire book.
If you're truly interested, read 'the game' and then check out the seduction forums. It will benefit your wallet more...

Poor Giovanni Drogo! Spends THIRTY years up at Fort Bastiani. Never has had a wife or girlfriend or children. Never has had a close friend. Never has engaged in combat, despite being a soldier. Never has accomplished anything of noteworthiness. Will the enemy finally arrive? Will all these years of service be vindicated?

What amazes me about this truly existential novel is that it was written by a realtively unknown, mediocre writer more than five years before the "quintessential" existential work, Beckett's WAITING FOR GODOT.

I consider Buzzati's novel a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. You suffer with Drogo throughout his years of meaningless service, and the ending brings you to your knees. I literally wept. A truly moving testiment to our insatiable need for struggle of any kind.

A heavy-handed message.......2006-08-06

Dino Buzzati's 'The Tartar Steppe' is considered a modern day classic. It tells an eventless story of one Giovanni Drogo, a young officer sent to a remote outpost in the mountains near a desert, which according to ancient legends is populated by hostile Tartars. But not a single soul has been in the desert for generations. Yet against everyone's better judgment, Drogo remains in the fort, and wastes his entire life.

In essence, this book is an existentialist story about the futility of striving towards grand goals, of the meaningless passage of life, and the pointlessness of existence in general. However, this book is marred by the heavy-handed writing. The author is desperate to get his message through, so he spoon-feds the reader all his ideas, as if he was afraid we might miss them. For example, at one point Drogo has a dream about a fellow officer, who in this dream is taken away to the sky by ghosts. Later on, this officer dies of cold and exhaustion, and this death scene is interlaced with word-for-word repetitions in parentheses from the dream sequence. It is as if the author feared his readers may fail to see the blatantly obvious connection between the dream and the death (even though the dream-symbolism is pure cliche), and decided to spell it all out as conspicuously as possible.

All in all, this otherwise excellent book completely lacks subtlety, and hence could've been much better were it written by a more sensitive writer. Nevertheless, it is probably one of the "lost classics" of existentialist fiction, and well worth a read. Just don't expect anything on par with "Nausea" or "The Stranger".

A classic.......2006-03-27

The Tartar Steppe is classic existentialism and a fierce criticism of military life.
Dino Buzzati is a major Italian author and the Tartar Steppe his masterpiece. So I am amazed at how little known he is in the English speaking world.
The book is certainly worth reading. The writing is beautiful (including the translated version) and the plot well suited to the philosophical message the author wished to convey.
The story tells of Giovanni Drago and his fellow soldiers' futile thirst for glory while they are posted to a desolate fort overlooking the barren Tartar Steppe.
