              Book Description

This book is an introduction to the techniques of many-body quantum theory with a large number of applications to condensed matter physics. The basic idea of the book is to provide a self-contained formulation of the theoretical framework without losing mathematical rigor, while at the same time providing physical motivation and examples. The examples are taken from applications in electron systems and transport theory. On the formal side, the book covers an introduction to second quantization, many-body Green's function, finite temperature Feynman diagrams and bosonization. The applications include traditional transport theory in bulk as well as mesoscopic systems, where both the Landau-Buttiker formalism and recent developments in correlated transport phenomena in mesoscopic systems and nano-structures are covered. Other topics include interacting electron gases, plasmons, electron-phonon interactions, superconductivity and a final chapter on one-dimensional systems where a detailed treatment of Luttinger liquid theory and bosonization techniques is given. Having grown out of a set of lecture notes, and containing many pedagogical exercises, this book is designed as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course, and is also well suited for self-study.

              5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2005-10-21

This book is exactly what a new student (with some training in basic grad courses in solid state, statistical mechanics, etc.) needs to grasp condensed matter physics without a "research-based bias." Todays programs are so focused on application that a thorough treatment of pedigogical materials get superfically taught. Philip Anderson warns about this in his timeless classic "Basic Notions." This book uses QFT in canonical picture (bootstraps), no mention of path integrals. I started out in HEP, so I got trained fairly well in path integrals, some may find this a barrier with the book. Luttinger theory is the most modern topic touched on, applications to materials science. I recommend Wen's book if you want to look at Quantum Hall Effects and Topological Orders (post 1980's).

                Book Description

This book is based on lecture notes developed for a one-semester graduate course entitled "The Interaction of Radiation with Matter", taught in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The main objective of the course is to teach enough quantum and classical radiation theory to allow students in engineering and the applied sciences to understand and have access to the vast literature on applications of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in materials research. Besides presenting the fundamental physics of radiation interactions, the book devotes individual chapters to some of the important modern-day experimental tools, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, photon correlation spectroscopy, and the various types of neutron, x-ray and light-scattering techniques.

                Book Description

The book targets a broad readership. First of all, it targets young researchers (postgraduate students) in solid state physics (both physicists and theoretical chemists) as it contains a wide and comprehensive coverage of all important branches of the subject including an up-to-date survey of recent revolutionary advances in quantum mechanics which have made it possible not only to calculate many properties of molecules and solids in close agreement with experiment, but to make reliable predictions in cases when a direct experiment is not possible (e.g. the Earth core). Secondly, it should be a valuable asset to established researchers in the areas of materials science, solid-state physics and chemistry due to very detailed explanations of a wide range of phenomena ranging from symmetry, lattice vibrations, electronic structure and superconductivity to magnetic and dielectric properties. Rigour and detail in explaining complicated mathematical techniques and in providing derivations when talking of various physical concepts are essential for those who would like to really understand things they have never had a chance to. Because of that and of the fact that the book contains a lot of material from different areas of solid-state physics retold from a single viewpoint, it should be indispensable for lecturers. Not only a number of courses, both general and specialised, should be possible to set up, but these courses may also be of a different level of difficulty ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate and then to highly advanced ones. This is because of a clear marking system adopted in the book. Hence, it should also be useful for advanced third- and fourth-year undergraduate students.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clarity and depth combined.......2005-07-06

I think this book could be of a great help not only to students, but also to physicists who are not experts in condensed matter physics. I belong to the last category, and the book turned out to be very useful for me when I decided to refresh my knowledge of the condensed matter physics for research purposes. I am also thinking about adapting some of the chapters for teaching graduate quantum mechanics courses.
This book combines the clarity and depth which is a quite rare occasion for a monograph. Quite often you start reading a monograph and think: "Oh, I know all this." In the opposite case you see that the book provides new information for you, but in such a complicated manner that you give up. The Kantorovich's book certainly does not belong to these two categories.

                      Book Description

Quantum computing promises to solve problems which are intractable on digital computers. Highly parallel quantum algorithms can decrease the computational time for some problems by many orders of magnitude. This important book explains how quantum computers can do these amazing things. Several algorithms are illustrated: the discrete Fourier transform, Shor's algorithm for prime factorization; algorithms for quantum logic gates; physical implementations of quantum logic gates in ion traps and in spin chains; the simplest schemes for quantum error correction; correction of errors caused by imperfect resonant pulses; correction of errors caused by the nonresonant actions of a pulse; and numerical simulations of dynamical behavior of the quantum Control-Not gate. An overview of some basic elements of computer science is presented, including the Turing machine, Boolean algebra, and logic gates. The required quantum ideas are explained.

This book is written in fairly simple language is is not difficult to comprehend. On the other hand, it talks about very advanced technologies that use completely new medium of computer structure. It's just extremely interesting to read. If this technology will work in the future, becoming practical rather than theoretical, our world will never be the same.

                      Book Description

The third edition had already been enlarged by the inclusion of new developments such as the direct observation of individual atoms in Paul traps, and of atoms in molecules on solid surfaces using the scanning tunneling microscope. Furthermore, new experiments in atomic interferometry and the possibility of laser cooling of atomic beams were added. The fourth English edition takes minor corrections and additions into account and remains a unique introduction to both experiments and theory of the physics of atoms and quanta. The student will find 160 problems and their solutions, making this book a real study text.

                      5 out of 5 stars A rare work.......2007-07-05

This book is indeed clear and easy to read and undoubtedly useful for advanced undergraduates and I imagine it would be a good review for would-be postgraduates. It also introduces more advanced topics, such as the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations and introduces many topical issues. Very good at conveying the mathematical 'tricks of the trade' but unlike so many texts on quantum physics, this book is actually a physics book! Not only does it deal with the mathematical structure of the theory, but it has a satisfying and detailed presentation of the experiments! It is also superbly illustrated (as all text books should be!). I find that too many authours these days seem to care more for the maths than the physics - let us not forget what physics is for! In my mind this is one of the best advanced undergraduate quantum physics texts that I have seen. It is also a great educational work - solutions to problems are provided which is essential for self-study, which this book is admirably suited for (in addition to being quite suitable for directly supporting a taught course). This book is very student friendly, a rare thing these days, and far more readable and entertaining than many other books on quantum physics.

4 out of 5 stars OK book on Atom Physics.......2000-08-18

This book is very readable and very clear. It can be used in advanced undergrad courses on atom physics. It treats the development of Atom Physics theory and experiments (Rutherford, Bohr etc.). It provides explanations to many practical quantum problems in the field of atom physics, so it can also be used to clarify problems in a Quantum Physics course. Some example problems briefly discussed in books like Gasiorowicz or David Griffiths on QF were very well explained here. Quite complete on the subject of Atom Physics. Exercises with (brief) solutions. German authors seem to have done a thorough job. Negative points: heavy, expensive, limited subject, published some time ago. I consider it a good buy afterall.
