James Wei , Morton M. Denn , John H. Seinfeld , George Stephanopoulos , Arup Chakraborty , Jackie Ying , and Nicholas Peppas Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0120085283 |
Book Description
In recent years chemical engineers have become increasingly involved in the design and synthesis of new materials and products as well as the development of biological processes and biomaterials. Such applications often demand that product properties be controlled with precision. Molecular modeling, simulating chemical and molecular structures or processes by computer, aids scientists in this endeavor. Volume 28 of Advances in Chemical Engineering presents discussions of theoretical and computational methods as well as their applications to specific technologies.

Quantum Mechanics: An Introduction for Device Physicists and Electrical Engineers, Second Edition
David Ferry Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0750307250 |
Book Description
This textbook provides a complete course in quantum mechanics for students of semiconductor device physics and electrical engineering. It provides the necessary background to quantum theory for those starting work on micro- and nanoelectronic structures and is particularly useful for those going on to work with semiconductors and lasers. This book was developed from a course the author has taught for many years with a style and order of presentation of material specifically designed for this audience. It introduces the main concepts of quantum mechanics which are important in everyday solid-state physics and electronics. Each topic includes examples which have been carefully chosen to draw upon relevant experimental research. It also includes problems with solutions to test understanding of theory. For the second edition significant new material has been added to each chapter, providing updated connections with relevant experiments and device concepts. New references and new problems are included.

Many-Body Quantum Theory in Condensed Matter Physics: An Introduction (Oxford Graduate Texts)
Henrik Bruus , and Karsten Flensberg Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198566336 |
Book Description
This book is an introduction to the techniques of many-body quantum theory with a large number of applications to condensed matter physics. The basic idea of the book is to provide a self-contained formulation of the theoretical framework without losing mathematical rigor, while at the same time providing physical motivation and examples. The examples are taken from applications in electron systems and transport theory. On the formal side, the book covers an introduction to second quantization, many-body Green's function, finite temperature Feynman diagrams and bosonization. The applications include traditional transport theory in bulk as well as mesoscopic systems, where both the Landau-Buttiker formalism and recent developments in correlated transport phenomena in mesoscopic systems and nano-structures are covered. Other topics include interacting electron gases, plasmons, electron-phonon interactions, superconductivity and a final chapter on one-dimensional systems where a detailed treatment of Luttinger liquid theory and bosonization techniques is given. Having grown out of a set of lecture notes, and containing many pedagogical exercises, this book is designed as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course, and is also well suited for self-study.Customer Reviews:

Interaction of Photons and Neutrons With Matter: An Introduction
Sow-Hsin Chen , and Michael Kotlarchyk Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 981022026X |
Book Description
This book is based on lecture notes developed for a one-semester graduate course entitled "The Interaction of Radiation with Matter", taught in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The main objective of the course is to teach enough quantum and classical radiation theory to allow students in engineering and the applied sciences to understand and have access to the vast literature on applications of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in materials research. Besides presenting the fundamental physics of radiation interactions, the book devotes individual chapters to some of the important modern-day experimental tools, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, photon correlation spectroscopy, and the various types of neutron, x-ray and light-scattering techniques.

ASIN: 1402021534 |
Book Description
The book targets a broad readership. First of all, it targets young researchers (postgraduate students) in solid state physics (both physicists and theoretical chemists) as it contains a wide and comprehensive coverage of all important branches of the subject including an up-to-date survey of recent revolutionary advances in quantum mechanics which have made it possible not only to calculate many properties of molecules and solids in close agreement with experiment, but to make reliable predictions in cases when a direct experiment is not possible (e.g. the Earth core). Secondly, it should be a valuable asset to established researchers in the areas of materials science, solid-state physics and chemistry due to very detailed explanations of a wide range of phenomena ranging from symmetry, lattice vibrations, electronic structure and superconductivity to magnetic and dielectric properties. Rigour and detail in explaining complicated mathematical techniques and in providing derivations when talking of various physical concepts are essential for those who would like to really understand things they have never had a chance to. Because of that and of the fact that the book contains a lot of material from different areas of solid-state physics retold from a single viewpoint, it should be indispensable for lecturers. Not only a number of courses, both general and specialised, should be possible to set up, but these courses may also be of a different level of difficulty ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate and then to highly advanced ones. This is because of a clear marking system adopted in the book. Hence, it should also be useful for advanced third- and fourth-year undergraduate students.Customer Reviews:

ASIN: 9810234902 |
Book Description
Quantum computing promises to solve problems which are intractable on digital computers. Highly parallel quantum algorithms can decrease the computational time for some problems by many orders of magnitude. This important book explains how quantum computers can do these amazing things. Several algorithms are illustrated: the discrete Fourier transform, Shor's algorithm for prime factorization; algorithms for quantum logic gates; physical implementations of quantum logic gates in ion traps and in spin chains; the simplest schemes for quantum error correction; correction of errors caused by imperfect resonant pulses; correction of errors caused by the nonresonant actions of a pulse; and numerical simulations of dynamical behavior of the quantum Control-Not gate. An overview of some basic elements of computer science is presented, including the Turing machine, Boolean algebra, and logic gates. The required quantum ideas are explained.Customer Reviews:

The Physics of Atoms and Quanta: Introduction to Experiments and Theory
Hermann Haken , and Hans Christoph Wolf Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0387578749 |
Book Description
The third edition had already been enlarged by the inclusion of new developments such as the direct observation of individual atoms in Paul traps, and of atoms in molecules on solid surfaces using the scanning tunneling microscope. Furthermore, new experiments in atomic interferometry and the possibility of laser cooling of atomic beams were added. The fourth English edition takes minor corrections and additions into account and remains a unique introduction to both experiments and theory of the physics of atoms and quanta. The student will find 160 problems and their solutions, making this book a real study text.Customer Reviews:
