    Book Description

This text takes the reader on a guided tour through the philosophical and physical foundations of protein isolation. Aimed at a student readership, it will also be very useful to life science researchers faced with the task of isolating a protein for the first time. The logic of the overall approach to isolating a protein is explained and the physical principles of each separation method are made clear by the use of simple models and analogies, drawn from everyday experiences. The author's aim has been to deepen the readers' insight into protein isolation methods, so that they may tackle new problems and perhaps devise new approaches to old problems. Many of the methods described are drawn from the author's own research and are thus uniquely described here: examples are three-phase partitioning, non-linear electrophoresis, and a simple approach to buffer making.

        Book Description

The increasing use of fiber optics in the field of medicine has created a need for an interdisciplinary perspective of the technology and methods for physicians as well as engineers and biophysicists. This book presents a comprehensive examination of lasers and optical fibers in an hierarchical, three-tier system. Each chapter is divided into three basic sections: the Fundamentals section provides an overview of basic concepts and background; the Principles section offers an in-depth engineering approach; and the Advances section features specific information on systems and biophysical parameters. All those interested in the fields of lasers and fiber optics will find this book fascinating and instructive reading.

            Book Description

This book is a teaching book for advanced undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. Its primary goal is to link some contemporary applications in chemistry, biology and medicine to known photophysical principles and laser properties. Chapters 1-3 highlight the basic photochemical and photophysical principles associated with electronic states together with a survey of laser systems, timing, and related devices. The following chapters include several techniques and applications in the fields of chemistry, biology and medicine that are based on these basic principles. This approach provides a means of motivating the student to link simple scientific ideas to their potential applications. The discussed techniques were grouped according to the photophysical or laser characteristics that are common among them. For instance, the photophysical properties of internal conversion (ic) and vibrational cascade (vc) constitute the basis of techniques depending on changes in molecular flexibility. We discussed several techniques depending on this phenomenon namely the detection of salmonella by the commercially available 4-methyl umbelliferyl caprilate (MUCAP) reagent, the modification of fingerprints upon metal ion complexation, DNA quantification by flexible fluorescent stains. The heat evolution associated with vc process is the basis of thermal lensing techniques as well as the laser welding of some biological tissues. Molecular fluorescence, another photophysical deactivation pathway, is the workhorse technique in medical diagnosis and analytical applications. The capabilities of fluorescence techniques were largely modified by applying time-resolved phenomena as well as polarized fluorescence. Applications

              Book Description

This entry-level textbook, covering the area of tissue optics, is based on the lecture notes for a graduate course (Bio-optical Imaging) that has been taught six times by the authors at Texas A&M University. After the fundamentals of photon transport in biological tissues are established, various optical imaging techniques for biological tissues will be covered. The imaging modalities will include ballistic imaging, quasi-ballistic imaging (optical coherence tomography), diffusion imaging, and ultrasound-aided hybrid imaging. The basic physics and engineering of each imaging technique will be emphasized.

                Book Description

This book treats the development and application of adaptive optics for industry and medicine. The contributions describe recently developed components for adaptive-optics systems such as deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors, and mirror drivers as well as complete adaptive optical systems and their applications in industry and medicine. Applications range from laser-beam forming and adaptive aberration correction for high-power lasers to retinal imaging in ophthalmology. The contributions are based on presentations made at the 4th International Workshop on Adaptive Optics in Industry and Medicine which took place in Münster, Germany, in October 2003. This highly successful series of workshops on adaptive optics started in 1997 and continues with the 5th workshop in Beijing in 2005.

3 out of 5 stars A thick book which could be much thinner.......2005-09-01

Working in optics, I purchased this book to get a wider scope of scanning techniques and possible optical schemes. The book is thick, up to eight hundred pages, and expensive. So, I expected a variety of optical schemes for laser/optical scanning. But I was disappointed with a great amount of topics, filling this book, which do not relate to scanning. For example, the chapters about M2 model, optical disk technology, image quality for scanning, are interesting in general but have rather distant relation to scanning. The chapter about motors and controllers is interesting, presenting the state-of-art of this technology, but it is overfilled with large, up to a page size, pictures which do not contain any information. For example, several pictures of printed-circuit boards with a great number of indistinguishable electronic components could be easily removed without any harm to the book. Also I doubt that pictures of standard diamond turning center, thin film deposition chamber, and other conventional industry technology are of any interest for professionals. At the same time such topics as infrared imaging scanners, reconnaissance systems, MEMS scanning/switching devices are completely ignored, as well as the rotating wedges technology. Summarizing, the size of this book could be made much smaller and the price lower without any loss of information.

                        Book Description

Hurriedly preparing his broiler-chicken houses for impending delivery of chicks, "Flanker" Fitzroy is accidentally knocked unconscious. Coming to, disoriented, he discovers he has no memory of whom, or where, he is. A strange, oversized, English-speaking chicken he nicknames MAC takes over, convincing Flanker that he needs his clairvoyance and magical powers to forestall ruin. It seems Flanker has mortgaged his future for semi-obsolete chicken houses and a rundown manor house on a saltwater farm. MAC will guide him and provide the labor.

Except for Flanker's lovely and loving wife Miss Lil, prospects are bleak. Yet, bonds of friendship between man and chicken mentor grow as they stave off the mortgage-holder, defeat oyster pirates in a nighttime battle and counter-terrorize the errant cropduster who buzzes the chicken houses, while quieting the evil bankers who want Flanker's hide.

Meanwhile, Flanker has a brief tryst with gorgeous Wanda, parties at a nude beach, and is trapped in a riot. Later, he saves his fellow hostages in a robbery, but is severely injured. Recuperating, his past is revealed and his wife's deep love proved, as they triumph over all disaster.

4 out of 5 stars A Chickenhouse comes to life!.......2001-06-12

Chickens- that is hens, roosters, and their babies- don't exactly lead fascinating lives. The kind that live on the farm stay put in their own little cramped, condo quarters, sweating out perspiration, laying eggs, and then, unwittingly, getting dispatched for the billions sold as McNuggets and in Chicken Noodle Soup. Their life's highlight is their own execution and an occasional feathers-flying, loud-screeching, mayhem-laden encounter with a fox. But not the chickens in William Rouse's "Plucked Again!" They sing (in Chinese, no less), dance, and party hardy. And their ringleader, a certain Most Ancient Chickenspokesperson (MAC) leads their harried and financially-strapped master/farmer named Flanker Fitzroy on a most amusing odyssey. Fitzroy, who acts HIMSELF like a chicken with its head cut off, enjoys partaking in rice wine and getting smashed to pieces with MAC, among other things. A perfect, quirky antidote to the techno-thriller. Recommended.
