Esteemed author Eve Bunting brings all her insight, empathy, and storytelling skill to this powerful allegorical tale, set in the streets of an unnamed city and illustrated with striking woodcuts. Danny, new to town, is proud when a glittery-eyed tiger invites him for a ride. He climbs up onto the tiger's massive back, and together they cruise the neighborhood. Everyone gives them respectshopkeepers and passersby, even other kids. Danny feels powerful and much older than ten. Soon, though, he realizes it isn't respect people feel for him and the tigerit's fear. And when he decides to get down off the tiger's back, he discovers it's a lot harder than climbing on. Whether the tiger is interpreted to represent gangs, drugs, or something else altogether, this poetically told, dramatically illustrated book is sure to provoke discussions about temp-tation, peer pressure, and conformity.

This unique picture book tackles one of society's most menacing things: the gang. A young boy is approached by a tiger (the gang), and is asked to hop on (join the gang). Once he's riding, the boy is excited and can't believe the tiger has such an interest in HIM, a 10 year old. Then he learns the darker side of being on the tiger, and wants to get off. The tiger does not make it easy, but in the end, the tiger loses a potential member. The bold, striking woodcuts accentuate the text, and deftly portray the scenes the text describes. This book opens up many avenues for discussion with parents, teachers, and (older) children, especially children who are not exposed to gangs on a regular basis.

Yet another wonderful book by an award winning author. In "Riding the Tiger", author Eve Bunting challenges the social consciousness of both children and adults. This intriging story provides the opportunity for thinking about choices. A book to not only read with children, but an opportunity to talk and share the morals and values of life.

                              Book Description

In 1969 Ole and Hannah Nydahl became the first Western students of H.H. the Karmapa, the head of the Kagyu tradition of Yogis in Tibetan Buddhism. After their years of practice in the Himalayas, he authorized them to teach and start centers in his name. They have continued this work ever since. Today, Hannah translates and organized for the main Lamas of the lineage, and Ole, himself a Lama, has now started over three hundred and fifty centers around the world.

Work in the West starts with an audience with the Queen of Denmark. A basement in historical Copenhagen becomes the first Tibetan Buddhist center on the European continent, and rusted-through VW-buses with race-car qualities get them everywhere. The Karmapa's visit to Denmark, in 1974, then opens up the world ...

Riding the Tiger is the inside story of the development of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. In his refreshingly unsentimental style, Lama Ole shows all aspects of the work. With breathtaking intensity, he highlights both healthy and unhealthy tendencies in the light of the Buddha's ultimate aim: To bring about the fully developed beings whose every activity blesses the world.

The book describes the starting of the first 100 centers all over the world, with many intriguing cross cultural adventurs and teachings along the way - from the spiritually hungry of Russia to bandits in South America and travels in North America with Karmapa and Kalu Rinpoche.

                              5 out of 5 stars A true treasure.......2003-03-11

I found this book really met a lot of questions which had formed over the years about lifestyle and the Buddhist view.
Lama Ole really presents joy and excitement with some rare glimpses of early interactions with the 16th Karmapa.
The freedom and acceptance of Kagyu Buddhism in non-judgement and fearless activity brings blessing to many around the world.
I am not suprised more and more that there are over 350 centers forming around the world. Id pick up this book any day, with the element that every part of it captures a unique and integral aspect of the development of Buddhism in the West. It is joy to read of Hannah and Ole Nydahl and their gift to bring lay buddhism to the West and in such a natural, unhindered way.

                              4 out of 5 stars A Fine Dharma Travelogue!.......2000-08-02

Lama Ole Nydahl is a unique figure in modern Buddhist history -first Western student of the Black Hat lama, H.H. the XVIth Gyalwa Karmapa, married, lama 'without robes', and spiritual figure personally chosen by the Karmapa to teach and make foundations in his name- and 'Riding the Tiger' is filled to overflowing with his particular energies and gifts. It is a galloping book that takes the reader around the world, inviting him in for a close-up look at the making of a Buddhist center for meditation and study, and Lama Ole has successfully started over one hundred such centers. And a deep look, as well, at the nature of Buddhism in the West, how it has been transplanted, how it has flourished. With due respect to another of the reviews on this page, Lama Ole's defense of Diamond Way Buddhism and of the singular wishes of the XVIth Karmapa, and his willingness to discuss the schism that has taken place within the Kagyu tradition, with two reincarnations of the Karmapa presently recognized by two differing factions, is certainly not childish, nor does the conflict itself necessarily reflect negatively on the Kagyu lineage. It is to Lama Ole's credit that while focusing his attention on the spreading of the Dharma, he does not shy away from the controversy. Perhaps that is because he holds the truth of this historical situation in his mind and heart, and therefore need not fear the light of day when looking at this controversy. It is certainly interesting that the 'other' 17th Karmapa, the one 'recognized' by Beijing, has recently escaped over the mountains to Dharamsala! Did not the Lord Buddha say "I show you suffering and the ending of suffering?" This is a magical book and a magical ride!

3 out of 5 stars Logbook of building centers in the west.......2000-01-02

A discription of Ole Nydahls work in building up and cherishing a western community of buddhists. A lot of illustrative pictures. The book is a sequal to Riding the Tiger, but Ole has now a clear program of establishing Karmapas buddhism in the west. It's a down to earth but solid system of tibetan buddhism. Ole's work is still growing and right now gaining momentum with 17.Karmapa in Europe. So I'm looking forward to another sequal of his biography.

2 out of 5 stars The auto commentary of a controversial figure.......1999-03-28

This book is an interesting read. If read on a superficial level, it gives a rather entertaining insight into the life of one of the first Western disciples of His Holiness 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. If the reader reads a bit deeper, the book sadly portrays a level of deception that casts a serious doubt on the authors motivation. In one chapter in particular, the author reproduces a letter written at the instigation of Ven.Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche in which he effectively bans the author from teaching at any of his centres - the most numerous of any Tibetan tradition in America at the time. The author amazingly launches into a diatribe of childish ridicule and dismissive abuse which sadly confirms the accusations cast in the letter itself. I found this most disappointing. On the whole, an entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars Successful to Transmit the True Aspect of Dharma.......1998-10-16

Lama Ole, One of the first western desciple of His Holiness Karmapa describes the joy and struggles of discovering the true nature of our mind.He honestly tells us about his feeling while taking the huge responsibility of bringing Tibetan Buddhist Teaching to the west. Plus, one can enjoy his travel adventure to south asia and Tibet and the description he gives about people and places he has confronted. This book is very much successful to shade light on the true nature of Guru- Desciple relationship. His devotion and confidence on Karmapa,( Reincarneted Buddhist Master, also Head of, one of the school on Tibetan Buddhism) is really Illustrious! Thanks! for sharing your treasure, Dear Lama Ole.

                              Book Description

Beauty, grace and power make the tiger one of the world's most loved animals, yet it is precisely these qualities that have contributed to the tiger's peril. Poaching, loss of habitat and prey, and conflicts between people and wild tigers have caused a catastrophic decline in the worldwide tiger population. If wild tigers are to survive through the next century, we must act now. Riding the Tiger is a comprehensive, scientific, and eminently readable account of the problems and possible solutions of securing a future for wild tigers. Lavishly illustrated in full color, the book is written by leading conservationists working throughout Asia. It looks at tiger ecology and biology, examining the tiger in both its natural setting and in our own consciousness. In exploring our efforts at conservation, the book addresses topology and population dynamics. Later sections discuss prey depletion and region-specific studies. Riding the Tiger is a vital information resource for tiger conservationists in the field, as well as necessary reading for serious students of carnivore conservation and conservation biologists in general. For the general reader, it is an accessible and elucidating overview of tiger conservation. John Seidensticker is Curator of Mammals at the National Zoological Park, Smithsonian Institution. With extensive experience in Bangladesh, Nepal, India, China, Russia, Thailand and Indonesia, he has worked on the conservation biology of wild carnivores for more than 25 years, and is currently Chairman of the Save the Tiger Fund of the US National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Mobil International. Sarah Christie is Conservation Programmes Co-ordinator at the London Zoo. Having overseen the expansion of the Zoological Society of London's tiger conservation programme, she is active in the implementation, management and collaboration of tiger conservation programmes around the world. Peter Jackson is Chairman of the Cat Specialist Group at the World Conservation Union (IUCN). A freelance writer and photographer, Jackson was previously the Chief Correspondent on the Indian subcontinent for Reuters News Agency, and has contributed to Smithsonian Magazine, International Wildlife, and BBC Wildlife. He has traveled widely in Asia, Africa, and the Americas and has published extensively on tiger conservation.

If you want to explore the present state of knowledge about tigers in the wild and their real prospects for survival, this is the best publication available. It's attractively illustrated with photos of wild tigers, current range maps, and useful treatments of their history, habitat, populations, prey relations, conflicts with people, and conservation status in various parts of their range. The book's chapters are well organized and written by well informed scientists.

I couldn't put the book down and have only been surprised that it has received so little publicity beyond the professional ranks of conservation biologists. It's useful also for those considering a visit to areas where tigers still occur.

An excellent and thorough composition of research of the tiger and its conservation. A must have for ecologists or wildlife biologists interested in studying or working with the big cats. Very informative, written with a lot of data, statistics, maps and references - most informative for those with a scientific mind. Highly recommended.

Riding the Tiger is a fine conservation book. It gets into the technical part of conservation which few see. If you are interested in becoming a zoologist this book is a must.

English teacher Arnold Fisher is arrested and detained in a Beijing police station. Fisher's participation in the building of an illegal capitalist empire and the death of a cadre has left him in a tight spot. In the course of his self-criticism and deposition to the Chinese Ministry of Justice, punctuated by his captor's occasional questions, Fisher discovers who has betrayed him, and whom he has, in turn, betrayed.

For those with a thirst for the histories of the great trading companies, and the exploits of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie in particular, this book is a godsend, as there seems to be a dearth of books in the English language dealing solely with the VOC. The author explores the emergence of the VOC as a major player in the political life of the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch colonials established a governance system in the VOC's sphere of influence based largely on interdependent arrangements with local elites--fealty to the VOC by indigenous rulers translated into an impregnable domestic power base, while the VOC was given a free hand to extract income from its possessions. Nagtegaal's compact volume captures in a microcosm the history of collisions between European colonials and locals, and provides a glimpse into the rise of the VOC as a 'state within a state'.

                                        A guide to India's fast-emerging economy

In 2007, India will likely overtake China as the world's fastest growing economy and become one of the largest economies globally. Direct foreign investment has increased dramatically in recent years and the pace of activity continues to quicken as large private equity funds and big corporations look for new revenue growth. The middle class is expected to grow from 90 million individuals today to 351 million individuals by 2010, and the retail market is expected to grow from $300 billion today to $637 billion by 2015. Riding the Indian Tiger gives individuals and organizations a detailed picture of the economic opportunities India has to offer.
