4 out of 5 stars class room help.......2002-09-20

Sometimes it has been difficult inspiring my students to be interested in science topics. This book was one of the most often borrowed in our classroom library. The kids seem to find it a quick and easy reference and it spurs them to seek out additional data on the subjects they are researching. Thanks for the chance to recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Liked it.......1999-10-24

Hi, I don't know much of anything about Chemistry, but I could still understand this book. I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting!.......1999-10-07

A very interesting book. Health and nutrition questions are answered, like when does a soap become a drug, what U.S. states are better than others when it comes to 'labeling laws', and what is the most dangerous chemical around the house? What does 'fat free' really mean? Are poisons like sulfur dioxide used on our grapes? What useful chemicals are in garlic? These questions are answered in a very accessable manner. The author did a good job making this important subject accessable to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Top quality, easy-to-use.......1999-10-07

Very understandable book. As an M.D., I often deal with patients with Asthma, allergies, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and other health problems caused by the vast amount of chemicals we touch each day. I found this book to be valuable and interesting. Hot current topics such as the safety of antibacterial chemicals, plants that can harm your pets, and dangerous chemical additives and colorings are talked about. Olestra, melatonin and DHEA are discussed, along with fun topics like the chemical components of chocolate.

5 out of 5 stars Really good and highly accurate.......1999-10-07

This seems like a book that should be in every grocery store - we are exposed to so very many chemicals in our modern day lives, it's crucial we know what these are doing to us. I was horrified to read a list of common household plants that can harm pets, and realized I had some of those in my home! I use this to look up info on the drugs and things always in the news, like antioxidants, glucosamine, chondroitin, Olestra, and MSG. I also read about the chemicals recommended by physicians for skin rejuvenation!

This book contains a remarkable overview of the current trends in string phenomenology, through the contributions of an international team of researchers who present their latest results. Dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Ian Kogan, this volume will fill a gap in the literature on a comprehensive overview of the subject.

As an Episcopalian I, like many Protestants, have always been rather skeptic of Catholic Marian worship. Strange Heaven directly addresses this skepticism with a study of Mary worship, written in clear layperson's terms. In it, Sweeney addresses the reasons for the adoration of Mary and brings to light many of the non-canonical documents upon which this worship is based. Although the book will not cause me to change my general feelings about Mary, it definitely does broaden my understanding and make me more able to accept worship of the Theotokis when I am confronted by it.

There's a point in every journey where there seems to be no light - no hope. After returning to the human stronghold, Dead Western, Bethany Black learns there is little hope she'll ever find respite from hell on Earth.

5 out of 5 stars The Characters Are Miserable, But The Story Is Great.......2007-01-18

After a delayed release, we finally get to see what happens next to Bethanny Black in her adventures in the literally post-apocalyptic world that she is now living in. If you don't know, the Rapture has come and gone. The worth ascended to Heaven while the rest of the human population was left on Earth. God has forsaken the planet, and now Satan and his hordes of demons call it their home. Those who aren't killed by the demons are subject to Hell on Earth as slaves. Bethanny, a sort-of concubine of a powerful demon lord named Belial, recently escaped captivity when her friend Bloato, a diminuitive demon who doesn't see things the way most of his species does, informed her that if she can make it to Vatican City, there is a chance that she can make it to Heaven via a special gateway. The trouble is that Bethanny lives in San Francisco, and with demons and giant insects in her way, along with a lack of organized transportation, she has a long journey ahead of her.
Before departing, Bethanny and Bloato ran into Tim, a kid who took shelter with Bethanny when the Rapture hit 10 years prior to the beginning of the story. They were soon separated, but they have now reunited, and Tim tells Bethanny and Bloato about a colony run by US soldiers nearby. Thinking that they have a better chance getting to Dead Western, as the colony is known, than the Vatican, the trio is last seen making their way there.
This volume begins with Bethanny, Bloato, and Tim being captured by some of the soldiers. However, due to Bethanny's ability to use magic, she is able to convince most of the soldiers that she is an angel with a mission to escort them to Heaven. She is put under the protection of Mouse, the one soldier who doesn't believe her story. He is, however, sympathetic to her and her friends, and agrees to keep her secret. The circumstances Mouse found himself in during the Rapture have had a profound effect on him, which contribute to his treatment of Bethanny.
Of course, Dead Western turns out to be anything but the Utopia our heroes were looking for, but the soldiers are the least of their worries, as Belial has sent a raiding party looking for Bethanny. By the end, we will learn something horrible about one of Bethanny's travel companions and, well, let's just say that things don't turn out so well.
There is also a one-shot issue that shows how Bethanny and Bloato first met. It is a sweet tale about the lengths she was willing to go to in order to have something good happen while she had to live in a demon-infested world as well as a beacon of hope for the goodness of the demon race (though I'm not sure Bloato's feelings for humans will ever be replicated).

                        Book Description

This haunting debut novel invites us to explore the boundaries between beliefs, desires, obsessions, and madness. Karen Salyer McElmurray's story is set in Mining Hollow, Kentucky, where we meet Ruth Blue Wallen; her husband, Earl; and their son, Andrew. Ruth longs to know God, the only escape she can find in a world that has shown her spiritual, emotional, and sensual defeat. Earl yearns for the music-making of his past, now lost as he makes a living as a coal miner. Andrew desires the affection of a boyhood friend, an expression of love considered sinful in rural Kentucky. And with the divinely inspired yet tormenting help of his mother, in a world of deeply and tragically conflicting desires, Andrew must choose to live or die--he must choose an uncertain love or nothing at all.

...in great appreciation for a wonderful book. The broiling minds and pure intensity of the characters were, in my opinion, equal in complexity and raw emotionality to the characters of D.H. Lawrence, Ayn Rand - and that is what I seek out most in anything I read.

Strange Birds in the Tree of Heaven is a remarkable book that examines the most universal of human emotions and the struggles we all experience in an attempt to maintain control of our own lives. While the reader's attention can wander at times, McElmurray never fails to draw the reader back in with her beautiful use of language and clearly depicted scenes. The images she creates stay with you long after you've read the last page.

Karen McElmurray is a powerful writer who produces a magical beauty not often found. Her abilities to present feelings and dreams, thoughts and emotions, fear and hope, longing and regret far exceeded my expectations. Her talent to create and bring to life the characters and places are a gift to the senses and the heart. Her words flow like liquid, I await anxiously for her next work.

The lyrical and haunting power of her language and the truth she exposes to us in her storytelling is proof that indeed this is a writer to watch. There will only be more power and beauty issuing forth from her talent.

                        Book Description

Lynn Coady's Strange Heaven burst on the Canadian Literary scene in 1998. Fresh, raw and utterly original it shot onto the best seller lists across the country and drew critical praise for its author. The book is now available in a new GLE Library Edition. Bridget Murphy is an unwed teenage mother who is seeking sanctuary in the psych ward of a Halifax children's hospital. Apathetic and withdrawn, she struggles with depression after giving her baby up for adoption. But Bridget's problems pale next to the other patients on her ward. There is Mona, the foul-mouthed rich kid, anorexics Kelly and Marie, and geeky, delusional Byron. Bridget observes the nightmarish, yet darkly humourous antics on the ward with a bemused detachment. At Christmas, Bridget is sprung from the hospital by her Uncle Albert. They return to her small Cape Breton town joining family and friends that make the psych ward inhabitants look like the poster children for mental health. Bridget's grandmother raves and prays from her bed, her father communicates in bellows punctuated by profanity and her mentally disabled Uncle Rollie spends his time making religious folk art to sell to tourists. Add to the mix her boozy friends and pesty ex-boyfriend and Bridget begins to realize that she has entered a place crazier than the one she left. Events that she once accepted as ordinary- an acrimonious Christmas dinner, rancorous encounters with relatives, a drunken party - suddenly become surreal. What comes as a surprise to Bridget is that this world is just the place that she needs to be to heal her wounded psyche. Her ability to step outside herself and observe the absurdities of her life, also helps her to accept them and to acknowledge her place in the "Strange Heaven" that is her home.

                        4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Chaos.......2004-11-11

A great read--Lynn Coady's text is rich and scattered with many humorous moments. The characters are fascinating and awful at the same time. This text deploys a 'strategic regionalism', that is, it challenges essentialist notions of Atlantic Canada; The people you encounter in this story are not your 'jolly, complacent folk' but are confused, often psychotic but nonetheless lovable characters. Coady speaks not only to the monotony of adolescent lives--Bridget and her 'friends' search for some kind of meaning through self-discovery--but also to feminist and religious politics. Ideals of Catholicism are subverted in this book, as are notions of the innocent virginal woman. Female characters in this book experience their bodies as a locus of betrayal.

                        4 out of 5 stars No Mistake.......2001-12-24

You are making no mistake if you read this book. Lynn Coady has a cutting sense of humour that will make you laugh and wonder if you should be. Her portrait of a tourmented young girl is both accurate and saddening.

3 out of 5 stars Much Mystery in the World.......2003-06-13

This is a pretty decent book if you want to run a non-western Vampire game. Most other gamelines like Mage, Werewolf and Changeling only get brief mentions (if that), and some like Hunter and Mummy came out WAY later than this book so aren't even covered at all. But still, the setting information in this book is pretty decent. I skipped over the first part of the book, North America, and went into the Latin America part. Some pretty good stuff, talking about the Lasomba powerbase, Setite influence in voudon and candomble, Brujah revolutionaries, Gangrel in the Amazon, Ananasi werespiders, Mayan and Incan Dreamspeakers and so forth. All Clans, bloodlines and the like get covered (which pretty much lays out the framework for the next chapters). Then we get the British Isles and Europe. For the most part, we get a lay out of which Clans have influence where. For instance, the Lasombra in Spain and Italy, Tzimisce in Eastern Europe, Toreador in France, Malkavians in the Low Countries, Tremere and Ventrue in Britain, Assamites in Turkey, etc. A little of each country is given with some info on the power structures. Then we got to the stuff I really liked. The chapters on Africa, Arabia and Egypt. The Arabia section gives a real quick overveiw of the Ashirra in the modern nights, not much new (and unfortunately only a little Assamite material), but the Egypt section is great. Lots of Egyptian history, stuff on the Vampire power structures of Cairo and Alexandria. And of course the battles between the Setites, Assamites and Camarilla. Then the Africa section, which was really nice. Its pre-Ebony Kingdom, but gives write ups of each Clan in the region. Again, stereotypical stuff like Assamite assassins, Moorish Lasombra, bestial Nosferatu and Gangrel, Setites everywhere, Malkavian dervishes, etc. Some stuff on the Dreamspeakers, Mokole, Ananasi and Garou too, but not much. Then some (real) brief teasers of Asia, and the western vampires, and finally some stuff on Australia (which was regrettably shorter than I'd have liked).
Overall, its a good, cheap book for running non-western games, but its pretty broad and stereotypical so you could just as easily come up with stuff on your own by reading about the region's politics and history. Plus, new books like Kindred of the East, Kindred of the Ebony Kingdoms, Blood Sacrifice and Veil of Night (plus the new Assamite and Setite clanbooks) have really fleshed out much of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, so this book is sort of dated. Still, its a pretty decent book for the facts contained in it, if nothing else.

The World of Darkness setting is highly useful for the player of any of the White Wolf games (Vampire, Werewolf, Changeling, Mage, Wraith, or even Hunter) who wants to know more about the world in which he finds himself. In that respect, this work is almost like a travel brochure, although it is a bit sparse on some details. It's useful for those who need to know where NOT to go. I find it most useful for Vampire, but that seems to be a general bias in the WoD line.
