Despite the industrial importance of extrusion troubleshooting, no book currently deals exclusively with this topic. This book rectifies this situation.
This book addresses all issues crucial in extrusion troubleshooting. In addition, industrial case studies, which are richly illustrating with color photographs and photomicrographs, are used to provide exemplary approaches to efficient problem analysis and problem solving.
Both authors have worked in extrusion for many years and have been involved in many troubleshooting projects. Although it is impossible to discuss all possible extrusion problems, it is possible to discuss the main categories and to develop a systematic and methodical approach to solving extrusion problems. In this book, the authors frequently use flow charts and fishbone charts to allow systematic troubleshooting.

This book provides an introduction to conformal field theory and a review of its applications to critical phenomena in condensed-matter systems. After reviewing simple phase transitions and explaining the foundations of conformal invariance and the algebraic methods required, it proceeds to the explicit calculation of four-point correlators. Numerical methods for matrix diagonalization are described as well as finite-size scaling techniques and their conformal extensions. Many exercises are included. Applications treat the Ising, Potts, chiral Potts, Yang-Lee, percolation and XY models, the XXZ chain, linear polymers, tricritical points, conformal turbulence, surface criticality and profiles, defect lines and aperiodically modulated systems, persistent currents and dynamical scaling. The vicinity of the critical point is studied culminating in the exact solution of the two-dimensional Ising model at the critical temperature in a magnetic field. Relevant experimental results are reviewed.

Wild Fibonacci is a beautifully illustrated book that introduces the reader the Fibonacci sequence and how it appears in nature. For those not familiar with it, the Fibonacci sequence is 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and so on where the next number is found by adding the two before is (e.g. 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 5 = 8).
Author Joy Hulme starts with a clear and simple explanation of the concepts, giving the most common examples of where the Fibonacci numbers appear in Nature. Then, with pictures and rhyming verse aimed at the younger audience, she cleverly integrates the formula of the sequence (e.g. 2+3=5) with pictures of animals who have body parts (tusk, tooth, talon, or tail) that curves according to the spiral associated with the sequence.
The book is an excellent choice for parents wanting to instill a love of Mathematics in children because it shows its relevance by linking it to Nature. The rhymes stumble occasionally, but make up for it by being chock full of information for the inquisitive mind. The major shortcoming of the book is that it tries too hard to fit animal's shapes to the curvature of the "equiangular spiral" formed Fibonacci squares (shown in the book). The sea shells shown have a spiral pattern but clearly do not follow the equiangular spiral, an error that will not be lost on a bright young reader.
Altogether, the book is a wonderful addition to a child's library and is highly recommended.

These 6 volumes - the result of a 10 year collaboration between the authors, two of France's leading scientists and both distinguished international figures - compile the mathematical knowledge required by researchers in mechanics, physics, engineering, chemistry and other branches of application of mathematics for the theoretical and numerical resolution of physical models on computers. Since the publication in 1924 of the "Methoden der mathematischen Physik" by Courant and Hilbert, there has been no other comprehensive and up-to-date publication presenting the mathematical tools needed in applications of mathematics in directly implementable form. The advent of large computers has in the meantime revolutionised methods of computation and made this gap in the literature intolerable: the objective of the present work is to fill just this gap. Many phenomena in physical mathematics may be modeled by a system of partial differential equations in distributed systems: a model here means a set of equations, which together with given boundary data and, if the phenomenon is evolving in time, initial data, defines the system. Following the mental and physical ramblings of the unspectacular Professor Isaac Swift as he comes closer to solving a beautifully thorny problem left behind generations ago by an eccentric French genius, the book cleverly dissects the forces driving mathematical creativity. Swift just barely balances his overpowering mental impulses, often likened to a "buzzing in his head," with his physical and social needs. Those familiar with academic math departments will find Schogt's eccentric crank Leonard Vale entertaining and all too true:
The pages crawled with incomprehensible equations in his familiar scratchy handwriting. He always threw in as many integral signs, sigmas, and other mathematical symbols as possible, reminding me of the calculations of comic book geniuses. Here and there he had left a clearing in the dense jungle of formulae, in which he had written profound aphorisms, underlined three times and followed by three exclamation marks.
Vale becomes a serious problem when he accuses Swift of plagiarizing his work, driving the novel toward its dark conclusion. Nonmathematical readers shouldn't fear--the few equations are simply illustrations of Swift's thinking, and no advanced knowledge is required to follow the plot. A Challenging Life.......2007-06-28
Isaac Swift is a mathematician who has had a long love affair with numbers. Throughout his life numbers have been what drives him, stimulates him and yet he is still just a middle of the road mathematician. Having never solved anything worth publishing in Numbers has been a thorn in his side. Giving up his love life and regular life to try and solve the Wild Number Theorem becomes an obsession.
I found this story to be heart wrenching, funny, and entertaining all at the same time. The characters are flawed, but in a very natural way. They are real living breathing people. You don't have to like numbers or math to find this story enjoyable!

I am sorry to say, I didn't like this book. The story is about a mediocre mathematician, struggling in his career, who thought he got a proof to the Wild Number Theorem. However it was flawed. But there is this eccentric old-age student of his who declares that the mathematician stole his proof. The story is not that attractive. Compared to this Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture is far more attractive - in narrative, in thrill, and in mathematics.

I don't share the point of view of some reviewers that the book portrays the life of a mathematician or his/her mind in a way that I could feel comfortable to call it typical or illustrative.
To me the book uses the subject of Math more as a setting for the drama of a character who is frustrated by his mediocre life, both professional and personal than as the driving force for the story. The author passes to the reader a protagonist that is tired of being lonely, rejected, unproductive and helpless in a life that has passed him by, leaving him numb, taking shelter in observing and criticizing others around him to the point where he is forced to look on the guy in the mirror.When he gets a golden opportunity to make up for all his inertia, he obsesses and loses control, but despite of finding solace in his downfall, the plot gets somewhat diluted or even circular(as Larry would have said :).I expected more of the mathematical glitter to be explored and developed creatively without necessarily sacrificing the character's inner struggle. Some very good ideas like Vale's character, Larry's professional greed and even the several possible and potentially thrilling outcomes from the police inspector's investigation are used inefficiently or not at all and simply vanish towards the end, leaving the reader wanting.
It is a nice snapshot of a human anguish and, to a point, self-discovery, all having a mathematical backdrop,and it flows OK (the thinness of the book comes in handy on avoiding tediousness to take over) but I didn't feel that Math or mathematicians were as central to the essence of the work as I would like and expect from an author with such a technical baggage.
Accurately portrays the mind of a mathematician!.......2005-10-05
As a pseudo-mathematician going through a mid-life career crisis, I empathized with the main character (Isaac Swift) in this book. After proving an enormously important result, Isaac reasons why he should be the one to prove it when so many superiors had tried and failed before. He checks and re-checks his work many times over, being afraid to present it to a superior mathematician for fear of making an embarrassing error. When he is eventually convinced that the result is correct, he takes extreme care to protect himself, as if conveying his new result is the purpose of his existence. There are several other characteristics of Professor Swift that I am sure many mathematicians can relate to, especially in social situations.
Just a cautionary note: at the beginning, I found the book a bit artificial and not so realistic. But as I read on, it got much better, and details were revealed that made the artificialness disappear. The book just gets better as you go on, and surprisingly accurately captures the mind of a mathematician. This is a definite read for anybody in mathematics, especially younger people who may be debating whether their career choice is right for themselves.
Don't expect "A Beautiful Mind" solves "The DaVinci Code".......2005-03-21
It's a quick read along the lines of "Uncle Petros" but not as sinister or incisive. Academics can see themselves or their colleagues in the math departments characters; satisfaction with the denouement might relate more to just deserts than the ingenuity of the author.

This book studies Hopf algebras over valuation rings of local fields and their application to the theory of wildly ramified extensions of local fields. The results, not previously published in book form, show that Hopf algebras play a natural role in local Galois module theory.
Included in this work are expositions of short exact sequences of Hopf algebras; Hopf Galois structures on separable field extensions; a generalization of Noether's theorem on the Galois module structure of tamely ramified extensions of local fields to wild extensions acted on by Hopf algebras; connections between tameness and being Galois for algebras acted on by a Hopf algebra; constructions by Larson and Greither of Hopf orders over valuation rings; ramification criteria of Byott and Greither for the associated order of the valuation ring of an extension of local fields to be Hopf order; the Galois module structure of wildly ramified cyclic extensions of local fields of degree $p$ and $p^2$; and Kummer theory of formal groups.
Beyond a general background in graduate-level algebra, some chapters assume an acquaintance with some algebraic number theory. From there, this exposition serves as an excellent resource and motivation for further work in the field.
