Book Description

Written for organic chemists, this all-new second edition offers an easy entry into the field of organotransition metal chemistry without requiring a background in inorganic chemistry. The book first covers the basics of transition metal chemistry and gives a practical introduction to the mechanisms by which organometallic reactions occur. The organic chemistry of transition metals is then presented by class of metal complex, with many examples of applications in the synthesis of natural products, pharmaceuticals, polymers, and materials. Ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as all practicing synthetic organic chemists.

          Book Description

This two volume reference, Nanowires and Nanobelts: Materials, Properties and Devices, provides a comprehensive introduction to the field and reviews the current state of the research.
Volume 1, Metal and Semiconductor Nanowires covers a wide range of materials systems, from noble metals (such as Au, Ag, Cu), single element semiconductors (such as Si and Ge), compound semiconductors (such as InP, CdS and GaAs as well as heterostructures), nitrides (such as GaN and Si3N4) to carbides (such as SiC). The objective of this volume is to cover the synthesis, properties and device applications of nanowires based on metal and semiconductor materials. The volume starts with a review on novel electronic and optical nanodevices, nanosensors and logic circuits that have been built using individual nanowires as building blocks. Then, the theoretical background for electrical properties and mechanical properties of nanowires is given. The molecular nanowires, their quantized conductance, and metallic nanowires synthesized by chemical technique will be introduced next. Finally, the volume covers the synthesis and properties of semiconductor and nitrides nanowires.
Volume 2, Nanowires and Nanobelts of Functional Materials covers a wide range of materials systems, from functional oxides (such as ZnO, SnO2, and In2O3), structural ceramics (such as MgO, SiO2 and Al2O3), composite materials (such as Si-Ge, SiC- SiO2), to polymers. This volume focuses on the synthesis, properties and applications of nanowires and nanobelts based on functional materials. Novel devices and applications made from functional oxide nanowires and nanobelts will be presented first, showing their unique properties and applications. The majority of the text will be devoted to the synthesis and properties of nanowires and nanobelts of functional oxides. Finally, sulphide nanowires, composite nanowires and polymer nanowires will be covered.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-11-23

This book is the best you are going to find for new quantum electronics. It covers all the essentials (wells, wires and dots as the title says) and, AND it gives you all the code used to generate every figure. This way you can work all the numbers and equations yourself. Yes, it is very expensive, but hey, Harrison has to eat man; a book like this has a real limited audience, so you have to bear the cost to be elite.

The code is all C code and can be run in unix or linux. You can also get an emulator (cygwin.com) or translate into your favorite C. The author has a great website with errata and software updates.

Again, the ability to follow along by running your own code helps really bring the information across. The book and the code are both well written.

          Excellent book.

            Book Description

This important and up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides a comprehensive guide to NASA research into nanotechnology for use in future spacecraft and space exploration programs. Nanotechnology, called the next industrial revolution, refers to science, engineering, and technology at the level of atoms and molecules, with a length scale of 1 to 100 nanometers - a nanometer is one billionth of a meter. The emphasis of this unique disc title is on the NASA Center for Nanotechnology (CNT) at the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in California, and the ANTS project (Autonomous NanoTechnology Swarm) of the Goddard and Langley Centers.

In addition to document reproductions, a major portion of the disc features 37 movie clips depicting nanoscale research at NASA's Ames Research Center and the proposed ANTS concept (28 MPG files, 7 MOV files, and 2 AVI files).

The NASA vision for nanotechnology states these goals: To develop novel concepts in nanotechnology for NASA's future needs on electronics, computing, sensors, and advanced miniaturization of all systems; To develop highly integrated and intelligent simulation environment that facilitates the rapid development and validation of future generation electronic devices as well as associated materials and processes through virtual prototyping at multiple levels of fidelity. Mission needs include: Onboard computing systems for future autonomous intelligent vehicles; powerful, compact, low power consumption, radiation hard; High performance computing (Tera- and Peta-flops); processing satellite data; integrated space vehicle engineering; climate modeling; revolutionary computing technologies; smart, compact sensors, ultrasmall probes; Advanced miniaturization of all systems; microspacecraft; Autonomous 'thinking' spacecraft ; Micro-, nano-rovers for planetary exploration; Nanotechnology to meet future needs on electronics, computing, data storage, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), sensors, instrumentation, and thermal protection materials.

Advanced miniaturization is a key thrust area to enable new science and exploration missions. Ultrasmall sensors, power sources, communication, navigation, and propulsion systems with very low mass, volume and power consumption are needed. Revolutions in electronics and computing will allow reconfigurable, autonomous, "thinking" spacecraft. Nanotechnology presents a whole new spectrum of opportunities to build device components and systems for entirely new space architectures. Networks of ultrasmall probes on planetary surfaces. Micro-rovers that drive, hop, fly, and burrow. Collection of microspacecraft making a variety of measurements.

The documents on this incredible CD-ROM are reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. There is unique movie clip material on this disc that is not published under other titles in our nanotechnology series.

Our news and educational CD-ROM and DVD-ROM discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc format makes a great reference work and educational tool. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.

The present volume 46 of Advances in Solid-State Physics contains the written versions of selected invited lectures from the spring meeting of the Arbeitskreis Festkörperphysik of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft which was held from 27 to 31 March 2006 in Dresden, Germany. Many topical talks given at the numerous symposia are included. Most of these were organized collaboratively by several of the divisions of the Arbeitskreis. The book presents, to some extent, the status of the field of solid-state physics in 2006 not only in Germany but also internationally.

                  Book Description

There is a growing interest in the connection of a single molecule or a wire of atomic diameter between two electrodes. This has led to the investigation of a new class of nanoscale materials: lines of metal atoms of atom-sized cross section, lines of atomic defects, and conjugated oligomers. Several ways to fabricate such materials are discussed, such as the self assembly of metal atoms on a surface under UHV, deposition from or sliding with an STM tip apex, and local surface modification using a voltage pulse. The synthesis of molecular wires is also presented, the objective being to produce long, low-gap, rigid conjugated oligomers.
The electrical connection of a single atomic or a single molecule is more challenging: Mechanical (break junction) STM or nanolithographic coplanar junctions are currently being used to measure the resistance of a single nanometer-scale wire. The theoretical problems associated with such measurements involve both solid state physics and quantum chemistry.
