2 out of 5 stars Survival manual.......2007-09-24

A good book for refrence material for the HAZMAT courses I teach. If you are buying this with the intent to use the information be really careful because some of the information is flat out wrong and will get you hurt and it will also get you put on a few watch lists.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2006-03-05

It just isn't worth it. This is one of those books that gets a lot of press about being dangerous when really, it is only dangerous to the person who buys it and tries these things.

Also, in today's world, more thorough and useful information is available off of the internet.

2 out of 5 stars Some What Useful.......2005-12-09

I have to say, despite the condemnation by rather intelligent associate and reviewers, and the undaunting approval from those of lesser intelligence, I still bought this book. It is one, very expensive. Secondly, it is very poorly written and illustrated. My god man, a ruler, a 99 cent ruler!

Any way, Id have to admitt, there is some useful information. But it is crudely presented and you have to sift through eons of photo copied horse dung to find it. Probabley not worth it in the long run. Im talking about reliability and financialy. Another disturbing thing Id like cleared up. The author refers to himself as a militant and a freedom fighter of sorts and refers to the readers as Militants. If so, and I imagine that the goal is to fight "the power", why the hell is this guy writing about weapons and techniques geared toward attacking crowds of civilians? A little off. Oh, and I heard a description for this book somewhere about using the information to protect your family and self sustaining power, hydro and cultivation systems. It was similar, but not exactly in those words. No armor or shelter designs, nor any power systems. Nothing of useful for "survival" All I see is a still, and explosive compounds from the 19th century. Oh, and the Marines don't use the Hand to Hand combat system, nor do any service members. It was terribley inefficient, hard to train realisticaly without injury and impractical. Its been replaced by modern brazilian Ju Jitsu similar to wrestling. And the Marines don't teach you to disarm a man's side arm while standing directly in front of it. Arson by Electronics is useless to.

The second edition is even even worst.

1 out of 5 stars If only I could give it less than one star..........2003-10-03

Ask anyone who has (1) a working knowledge of explosives (or more accurately, pyrotechnics) and (2) gone through the wheat and the chaff of pyrotechnics literature what they think of Kurt Saxon's body of work, and you'll doubtlessly receive a litany of 4-letter words I can't write here. He does not know what he's talking about, and he has done very little of what writes about. One of the few times he put his own life on the line--rather than his readers'--he lost part of his hand.

Please, read it for the entertainment value, but nothing else.

1 out of 5 stars WRONG! ALL WRONG!.......2003-04-11

This travesty is filled with useless and inaccurate misinformation which could quite easily result in an experimenter being maimed, blinded or killed. The illustrations are so crudely rendered they might as well have been drawn with a crayon. Only the first twenty-or-so pages are original material -- the remainder of the book consists of nearly illegible photocopies of obsolete pyrotechnics and ballistics patents and similar filler material. A disgusting waste of paper!

Book Description

To understand the output from a geographic information system, one must understand the quality of the data that is entered into the system, the algorithms driving the data processing, and the limitations of the graphic displays. Introduction to Mathematical Techniques Used in GIS explains to nonmathematicians the fundamentals that support the manipulation and display of geographic information. It focuses on basic mathematical techniques, building upon a series of steps that enable a deeper understanding of the complex forms of manipulation that arise in the handling of spatially related data. The book moves rapidly through a wide range of data transformations, outlining the techniques involved. Many are precise, building logically on underlying assumptions. Others are based upon statistical analysis and the pursuit of the optimum rather than the perfect and definite solution. By understanding the mathematics behind the gathering, processing, and display of information, GIS professionals can advise others on the integrity of results, the quality of the information, and the safety of using it.

3 out of 5 stars Good at explaining the math, bad at tying in the math to GIS.......2006-08-19

This book covers just about all of the math involved in GIS calculations from basic mathematics and algebra through calculus and statistics. The explanations are very accessible and the examples are clear. However, the book does a rather poor job of tying the mathematics back into solving problems in cartography. In fact, it does not even tackle that job at all. Instead, the first chapter of the book is a rather vague one entitled "Characteristics of Geographic Information" that talks about various mathematical problems in GIS, and that is the end of the discussion for the remainder of the book. Another problem with the book is that there are no exercises for the student. This is a real setback, since there is such a variety of mathematics being presented in this book that I would think that exercises would be not only appropriate but a necessity. Both straight numerical exercises and also a few "projects" that utilize various mathematical concepts in GIS would be very helpful.

If you are an instructor and you think you know how to fill in the gaps left in this book, it would probably make a good template from which to teach, but I would not recommend it to students who intend to self-teach the material.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction To Mathematical Techniques Used In GIS.......2005-08-10

I learnt a lot from reading this book. It begins with a simple introduction of the basic but necessary mathematical tools required to understand how GIS software tools and concepts operate. This understanding opens up new opportunities for users to code new functions into the API's that are becoming standard fare of many of the commercial spatial software.

However, the intensity of the contents climb steeply in the middle chapters and the unfocused reader can easily be lost amongst the concepts. Making it to the end of the book will bring a new realization about how our GIS really operates. One good feature is that the chapters are very short and concise, so by the time you are bored, the chapter comes to an end and you can reflect back in sensemaking mode. This is a very understandable book to those who take the patience to read it.

      Book Description

The first edition of Sound and Structural Vibration was written in the early 1980s. Since then, two major developments have taken place in the field of vibroacoustics. Powerful computational methods and procedures for the numerical analysis of structural vibration, acoustical fields and acoustical interactions between fluids and structures have been developed and these are now universally employed by researchers, consultants and industrial organisations. Advances in signal processing systems and algorithms, in transducers, and in structural materials and forms of construction, have facilitated the development of practical means of applying active and adaptive control systems to structures for the purposes of reducing or modifying structural vibration and the associated sound radiation and transmission.
In this greatly expanded and extensively revised edition, the authors have retained most of the analytically based material that forms the pedagogical content of the first edition, and have expanded it to present the theoretical foundations of modern numerical analysis. Application of the latter is illustrated by examples that have been chosen to complement the analytical approaches to solving fairly simple problems of sound radiation, transmission and fluid-structural coupling that are presented in the first edition. The number of examples of experimental data that relate to the theoretical content, and illustrate important features of vibroacoustic interaction, has been augmented by the inclusion of a selection from the vast amount of material published during the past twenty five years. The final chapter on the active control of sound and vibration has no precursor in the first edition.

      * Covers theoretical approaches to modeling and analysis
      * Highly applicable to challenges in industry and academia
      * For engineering students to use throughout their career

        Book Description

Intended a both a textbook and a reference, Fourier Acoustics develops the theory of sound radiation uniquely from the viewpoint of Fourier Analysis. This powerful perspective of sound radiation provides the reader with a comprehensive and practical understanding which will enable him or her to diagnose and solve sound and vibration problems in the 21st Century. As a result of this perspective, Fourier Acoustics is able to present thoroughly and simply, for the first time in book form, the theory of nearfield acoustical holography, an important technique which has revolutionised the measurement of sound. Relying little on material outside the book, Fourier Acoustics will be invaluable as a graduate level text as well as a reference for researchers in academia and industry.

        Key Features
        * The physics of wave propogation and sound vibration in homogeneous media
*Acoustics, such as radiation of sound, and radiation from vibrating surfaces
*Inverse problems, such as the theory of nearfield acoustical holography
*Mathematics of specialized functions, such as spherical harmonics

This is a "must have" book for everyone who deals with acoustic radiation. The treatment of nearfield acoustic holography was scattered all over the scientific literature about acoustics. Now one has a reference point, where all the main aspects of the subject are dealt with in a clear, didactic way. The chapters are very well organized, containing an introduction on the basic aspects of signal processing and leading naturally to a good understanding of the subject.

          Book Description

Suitable for both individual and group learning, Engineering Acoustics focuses on basic concepts and methods to make our environments quieter, both in buildings and in the open air. The author’s tutorial style derives from the conviction that understanding is enhanced when the necessity behind the particular teaching approach is made clear. He also combines mathematical derivations and formulas with extensive explanations and examples to deepen comprehension. Fundamental chapters on the physics and perception of sound precede those on noise reduction (elastic isolation) methods. The last chapter deals with microphones and loudspeakers. Assuming basic mathematical skills including integral calculus, the book offers a short introduction on the use of complex amplitudes in acoustics. Moeser includes major discoveries by Lothar Cremer, including the optimum impedance for mufflers and the coincidence effect behind structural acoustic transmission.

" A readable and excellent text… unique in several ways… provides an excellent coverage of acoustic fundamentals… The book is excellent in dealing with noise control in interior spaces… excecllent book in the areas covered and it should be on the bookshelf of every noise control engineer.” J. Acoust. Soc. Am.

                      Book Description

Telling her story at the end of the 20th century, Laydia Spain O'Hara, untangles the past of fourteen characters' lives tied together in a small southern Illinois town from the mid-1950s of Elvis through the mid-1960s after Kennedy's Camelot. Her comic tale of faces unmasking--and conflicts resolving--is a human journey about coming of age and inventing one's self despite all gossip while keeping the torch of true love burning. In a triangle with her two best friends, Jessarose and Mizz Lulabelle, Laydia Spain outwits convention, opens her own boarding house, and discovers a solidarity in new ideas of family, home, and the human heart that mirror the vast social changes sweeping American culture during the mid-century.

In the tradition of spunky small-town girls whose vernacular descends from Huck Finn, Laydia Spain dares to take on her own father, Big Jim O'Hara, the postman and accordion champ who named her Laydia Spain; Mister Henry Apple, the prescription-eating pharmacist who marries the bleach-blond Mizz Lulabelle; and Mister Wilmer Fox, the red-headed traveling salesman whose revolving returns to the little town of Canterberry always upset everyone's plans to live happily ever after.

Ultimately, the dark-skinned cinnamon girl, Jessarose, who takes off on the road to fame and fortune as a roadhouse blues singer, defines the direction of love, because, while "the human face is a limitless terrain that just pulls you right in....the geography of women is where nature itself takes course homeward bound, the long route or the short, the high road or the low."

Comic, good-humored, nostalgic, and as vivid as a fast-talking film script with music, Jack Fritscher's sixth book of fiction is lean writing laced with witty observations and a couple of tear drops of genuine human compassion. This is a real storyteller's tale--a very polished tale--of lively characters living in a specific place at a time that has reached the level of myth in American popular culture.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Fried Green Tomatoes with the Ya Ya Sisterhood.......2003-01-17

When it comes to the American novel of the "sawth" with women drawling out their best dialog, quips, and wisdom, this funny little novel has more storytelling power, plot, and dialog than most, and doesn't let its gals (2 white, 1 black)turn into stereotypes. It's as good, if not better than fried green tomatoes with the Ya Ya's, and both of those books are something wonderful indeed in their own right.

5 out of 5 stars Jack is the bomb!!.......1999-08-10

The Geography of Women is a wonderful book, and compleatly engrossing. The only thing that tops Jack's amazing writting is his absolutely charming personality. I highly reccomend this novel to anyone who wihes to escaoe thier reality for a few hours. . .
