ASIN: 0792367677 |
Book Description
This book provides an updated discussion of some aspects of snow and glacier hydrology, drawing on the results of investigations in recent years in Arctic, Antarctic, Himalayas, Alps, Rocky Mountains, and other mountains of the world. This book is not meant to be an encyclopaedia in its treatment of snow and glaciers. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the book can serve as a source of reference at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level and that it will stimulate further interest and research in this important part of the hydrologic cycle.Customer Reviews:

Thermodynamics of Energy Conversion and Transport
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387989382 |
Book Description
It is becoming more and more important to manage energy resources effectively: to maximize their benefits while minimizing the negative environmental impacts. Scientist and engineers are thus faced with the problem of optimizing complex systems subject to constraints from, ecology, economics, and thermodynamics. It is chiefly to the last that the present volume is addressed. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic approaches, such as finite-time thermodynamics and Second-Law analyses, can provide realistic models and analyses that can be used to search for optimum ways to operate machines and processes. Intended for physicists, chemists, and engineers, this volume reviews the state of the art in the thermodynamics of energy conversion and transmission. Using examples from solar, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and environmental engineering, the book focuses on the use of thermodynamic criteria for optimizing energy conversion and transmission. The first set of chapters focuses on solar energy conversion; the second set discusses the transfer and conversion of chemical energy (as in internal combustion engines or distillation columns); a concluding set of chapters deals with geometric methods in thermodynamics.

Murder On 34th Street
Ed Koch Manufacturer: Kensington ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 1575662329 |
Customer Reviews:
Cute.......2002-10-21
Basically, the books in his series are cute, nothing more, nothing less. Yet since these stories are told in the Mayor's own highly distinctive voice, and filled with detail about the back office workings of City Hall, the mysteries nonetheless make for interesting reading. Though the plots here are thin, a reader still will come away with new insights about the Koch administration and the governing of the City of New York.
In the end, Mayor Koch is not much competition for Rex Stout or Agatha Christie, but reading his New York City murder mystery series was fun. As a New Yorker born and bred--and a full-time resident there during his entire term--I enjoyed all of these mysteries.

Fun for Kochophiles.......1999-11-26
New Yorkers will enjoy this one.......1997-11-11
No one messes with Ed's city as long as he is in charge. With his bodyguards in tow, Ed begins to investigate the killings even as he deals with the myriad of problems confronting the largest city in the United States and the interference of his "chicken soup" mother. By doing this inquiry, Ed has placed his own life in jeopardy.
MURDER ON 34th STREET is the third Ed Koch mystery and like the previous two (MURDER AT CITY HALL and MURDER ON BROADWAY), the star is the city itself, especially the neighborhoods being trampled by Mr. Koch as he seeks to uncover the identity of a killer. The Koch persona is identical to when he was the actual mayor (this reviewer resided there at the time). However, the mystery is relatively simple and is overwhelmed by the characters, including the city. This novel is for fans of Mr. Koch, New York City, and those who enjoy a bit of holiday fluff. Readers who are exhilarated by complex who-done-its should not take a bite out of the apple.

Murder Is the Charge: The True Story of Mayor Charlie Robertson and the York, Pennsylvania, Race Riots
William C. Costopoulos , and Brad Bumsted Manufacturer: Camino Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0940159880 |
Book Description
Eleven days of hell was how those charged with restoring order to York, Pennsylvania, described the July 1969 riots. The false accusation of a young African American boy against a group of white gang youths--a charge that fell like a match to straw in the already racially charged atmosphere --incited mayhem that quickly escalated from throwing rocks to indiscriminate shooting between blacks and whites. With the city out of control, then Governor Raymond Shafer called in the National Guard. In the end, the toll came to two dead--Henry Schaad, a white police officer, and Lillie Belle Allen, a young black woman--untold numbers wounded, enormous destruction of property, and a ruptured community. Though the shooters of Schaad and Allen were known at the time, in the interest of preserving a fragile peace, the district attorney declined to prosecute a case for the killings.Fast-forward to May 17, 2001, when York Mayor Charlie Robertson, a former police officer on duty during the riots, is arrested and, later, on the steps of City Hall, chokes out the words: "Murder . . . murder . . . murder is the charge!" The prosecution's chief witness accused Robertson of handing out .30-06 shells to white gang members, instigating them to kill, during the hot night of July 21, 1969, but the witness was himself a corrupt and uncorroborated source with an otherwise faulty memory. In fact, pathologists who examined Lillie Belle Allen's body determined that a slug from a 12-gauge shotgun, not .30-06 ammunition, had taken her life. Moreover, Charlie was not even at the scene when the fatal shot was fired. During the carnage that was the 1969 riots, the one and only misdeed a now-repentant Charlie was guilty of was raising his fist in the air and yelling "white power" in Farquhar Park, two days after the death of Officer Schaad. But, despite tainted testimony, the deaths of key witnesses after a lapse of thirty-two years, the loss of crucial evidence, and the erosion of memories, Charlie Robertson stood charged with the murder of Lillie Belle Allen.
Thus, in the effort to right a long-ago wrong, another grievous one is committed. And now the jackals--as defense attorney and author William C. Costopoulos describes the media in this biting account of his most challenging case--go to work. Building the case against Robertson, editorials demand his resignation as mayor of York. Asked by the chairman of the York Democratic Party to withdraw from his race for reelection as mayor, then underway, Charlie complies, but refuses to resign his current term: "nobody was going to take that from him." The life of Charlie Robertson, who grew up in York and devoted his life to serving his beloved White Rose City, lies in ruins.

Breaking Barriers.......2003-09-10
Alex's existence as an inner city youth exposes him to many shocking incidences of violent crime, but none more disturbing than the night he witnesses the brutal drive-by shooting of his brother, an aspiring basketball star. His brother was the only bright spot in his life and after his death, Alex finds himself alone with an emotionally decimated father who completely withdraws from life. Alex realizes that education is his only way out of his torturous environment, so he applies himself in school and graduates as class valedictorian with a full scholarship to a prestigious black college.
College life finds an ambitious Alex applying himself rigorously in hopes of changing his fortune. When he unwittingly intervenes during an attack on the mayor's daughter, he somehow emerges as a hero and suddenly finds himself a campus celebrity. The mayor expresses his gratitude by taking up Alex's cause and starts backing him financially and Alex finds his long awaited avenue into the world of the privileged. But the mayor is leading a double life, which plunges an unsuspecting Alex into a nightmarish world of danger and deception.
Collen Dixon's new novel is a disturbing commentary on the social infrastructure of the urban ghetto and gives insight into what motivates some inner-city youth to rise above their circumstance and break down the socioeconomic barriers imposed on them by an unforgiving society. SIMON SAYS tends to be a bit predictable in spots, but nonetheless is an intriguing, well written whodunit which will keep the reader interested from its very somber beginning to its extremely bizarre ending.
