4 out of 5 stars Review of Student's Solutions Manual for Physical Chemistry, Seventh Edition.......2005-10-13

The Student's Solutions Manual for Physical Chemistry, Seventh Edition is very helpful and provides enough information in their problem solving to understand the basis of the chapters and the problems.

5 out of 5 stars LifeSAVER.......2005-09-30

This manual is a life saver. I have an instructer that teaches theory more than practical applications. He is a great guy but I have to see how things actually work before I can understand why they work the way they do. This manual helps me to solve the problems in each chapter and at the same time I can understand the instructor.

It is just what it is supposed to be...and it's better than nothing.

    Book Description

This book provides an updated discussion of some aspects of snow and glacier hydrology, drawing on the results of investigations in recent years in Arctic, Antarctic, Himalayas, Alps, Rocky Mountains, and other mountains of the world. This book is not meant to be an encyclopaedia in its treatment of snow and glaciers. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the book can serve as a source of reference at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level and that it will stimulate further interest and research in this important part of the hydrologic cycle.
Audience: The book should be useful to those who are engaged in the practice of agricultural and civil engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences and engineering, ecosystem management, forest and watershed sciences, and others.

3 out of 5 stars not a reader, just for reference.......2005-09-28

I've only read the first 2 chapters, but the book to this point is riddled with grammatical and factual errors. For example, on the first page of Ch. 2: (The)"Atmosphere is a blanket of gasses, suspended liquids and solids that entirely envelop the earth, extending outward for several thousand kilometers." Admittedly it's hard to tell where the atmosphere ends, but several thousand?! This is an extreme example, but I'll definitely be sure to read the theoretical documentation very closely. However, the documentation is why I have the book, as it does provide a dedicated review of the work that's been done up to the present and has enough references to keep me reading for a while. Thanks for the references if not the writing.

                Book Description

It is becoming more and more important to manage energy resources effectively: to maximize their benefits while minimizing the negative environmental impacts. Scientist and engineers are thus faced with the problem of optimizing complex systems subject to constraints from, ecology, economics, and thermodynamics. It is chiefly to the last that the present volume is addressed. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic approaches, such as finite-time thermodynamics and Second-Law analyses, can provide realistic models and analyses that can be used to search for optimum ways to operate machines and processes. Intended for physicists, chemists, and engineers, this volume reviews the state of the art in the thermodynamics of energy conversion and transmission. Using examples from solar, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and environmental engineering, the book focuses on the use of thermodynamic criteria for optimizing energy conversion and transmission. The first set of chapters focuses on solar energy conversion; the second set discusses the transfer and conversion of chemical energy (as in internal combustion engines or distillation columns); a concluding set of chapters deals with geometric methods in thermodynamics.

                  4 out of 5 stars Cute.......2002-10-21

In his spare time, with collaborative assistance, former New York City mayor Edward I. Koch writes mystery stories. Curiously, his protagonist is a character named Edward Koch who is...the Mayor of the City of New York.

Basically, the books in his series are cute, nothing more, nothing less. Yet since these stories are told in the Mayor's own highly distinctive voice, and filled with detail about the back office workings of City Hall, the mysteries nonetheless make for interesting reading. Though the plots here are thin, a reader still will come away with new insights about the Koch administration and the governing of the City of New York.

In the end, Mayor Koch is not much competition for Rex Stout or Agatha Christie, but reading his New York City murder mystery series was fun. As a New Yorker born and bred--and a full-time resident there during his entire term--I enjoyed all of these mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Elementary My Dear Ed.......2001-12-29

I love Christmas, like Ed Koch, New York, and mysteries, this is a wonderful blend. Read it, I wish he would make more.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for Kochophiles.......1999-11-26

I'm not sure exactly how much contribution Ed Koch makes to these mystery novels, but they definitely capture his "style"... I could almost hear his voice. I thought this one (Murder on 34th St.) was the best of the batch of (so far) 4 books. Nicely written and plays fair with the reader (I even managed to figure out who the murderer was from the clues!)

4 out of 5 stars New Yorkers will enjoy this one.......1997-11-11

Ed Koch knows that being the mayor of New York City is one of the toughest jobs in the world. However, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Ed knows that there's no place, especially that Joisey mall that can compete with the excitement of the "Big Apple". However, this holiday season has had a poor start for hiz honor. Ed suffers from a cold he caught during the Thanksgiving Day parade and, worst yet for the city, someone is killing the famous Santas at the Ramsey Department Store on thirty-fourth street.

No one messes with Ed's city as long as he is in charge. With his bodyguards in tow, Ed begins to investigate the killings even as he deals with the myriad of problems confronting the largest city in the United States and the interference of his "chicken soup" mother. By doing this inquiry, Ed has placed his own life in jeopardy.

MURDER ON 34th STREET is the third Ed Koch mystery and like the previous two (MURDER AT CITY HALL and MURDER ON BROADWAY), the star is the city itself, especially the neighborhoods being trampled by Mr. Koch as he seeks to uncover the identity of a killer. The Koch persona is identical to when he was the actual mayor (this reviewer resided there at the time). However, the mystery is relatively simple and is overwhelmed by the characters, including the city. This novel is for fans of Mr. Koch, New York City, and those who enjoy a bit of holiday fluff. Readers who are exhilarated by complex who-done-its should not take a bite out of the apple.

                      Book Description

Eleven days of hell was how those charged with restoring order to York, Pennsylvania, described the July 1969 riots. The false accusation of a young African American boy against a group of white gang youths--a charge that fell like a match to straw in the already racially charged atmosphere --incited mayhem that quickly escalated from throwing rocks to indiscriminate shooting between blacks and whites. With the city out of control, then Governor Raymond Shafer called in the National Guard. In the end, the toll came to two dead--Henry Schaad, a white police officer, and Lillie Belle Allen, a young black woman--untold numbers wounded, enormous destruction of property, and a ruptured community. Though the shooters of Schaad and Allen were known at the time, in the interest of preserving a fragile peace, the district attorney declined to prosecute a case for the killings.

Fast-forward to May 17, 2001, when York Mayor Charlie Robertson, a former police officer on duty during the riots, is arrested and, later, on the steps of City Hall, chokes out the words: "Murder . . . murder . . . murder is the charge!" The prosecution's chief witness accused Robertson of handing out .30-06 shells to white gang members, instigating them to kill, during the hot night of July 21, 1969, but the witness was himself a corrupt and uncorroborated source with an otherwise faulty memory. In fact, pathologists who examined Lillie Belle Allen's body determined that a slug from a 12-gauge shotgun, not .30-06 ammunition, had taken her life. Moreover, Charlie was not even at the scene when the fatal shot was fired. During the carnage that was the 1969 riots, the one and only misdeed a now-repentant Charlie was guilty of was raising his fist in the air and yelling "white power" in Farquhar Park, two days after the death of Officer Schaad. But, despite tainted testimony, the deaths of key witnesses after a lapse of thirty-two years, the loss of crucial evidence, and the erosion of memories, Charlie Robertson stood charged with the murder of Lillie Belle Allen.

Thus, in the effort to right a long-ago wrong, another grievous one is committed. And now the jackals--as defense attorney and author William C. Costopoulos describes the media in this biting account of his most challenging case--go to work. Building the case against Robertson, editorials demand his resignation as mayor of York. Asked by the chairman of the York Democratic Party to withdraw from his race for reelection as mayor, then underway, Charlie complies, but refuses to resign his current term: "nobody was going to take that from him." The life of Charlie Robertson, who grew up in York and devoted his life to serving his beloved White Rose City, lies in ruins.

LIFE’S A GAME. ARE YOU READY TO PLAY?

The blood rushed from Alex’s head, and his body went limp. As he passed into an abyss of darkness, the chilling final words of The Deliverer rang in his ears, words that would haunt him for the rest of his life. “The next time you pull a knife on someone, you better know why. It’s not a toy. It’s not a plaything. You be prepared to either use it for real or have it used on you.You either kill or be killed. Always remember that.”
                          —from Simon Says

Alexander Baxter is a young man from the heart of D.C.’s most notorious ghetto and seems destined for a life of crime. But his intelligence triumphs over his fists when Simon Blake, the city’s illustrious mayor, plucks him out of the clutches of a violent fate and guides him to achieve his every wish. For Alex, it’s a fairy tale come true.

But this isn’t a fairy tale—and no good deed ever goes unpunished. In this riveting story of murder, intrigue, romance, suspense, and political high jinks, Alexander Baxter learns to be careful what he wishes for, who he trusts, and where he leaves his heart. And he learns it the hard way.

I did not enjoy this book at all. It was far too bland for my tastes. It was too drawn out. Please don't waste your money.

I love John Grisham novels. But none of his novels ever featured African Americans in a lead role. Simon Says can stack up against any John Grisham novel. Colleen Dixon went all the way out in writing this intriguing story. I liked the way she spared no detail in mapping out Alex's background and giving the reader a taste of what his life was like growing up in the ghetto of Washington DC. Some readers may find this part drawn out, but when you read on, it all ties in. The writer then maps out Alex's college years and finally his professional life after graduation, where things really begin to heat up. The "good" mayor of Washington DC turned out to be a great villian. I don't normally cheer for the bad guys, but this villian is a villian's villian. Great job, Colleen!

Alex Baxter is no stranger to tragedy. While he was still a very young child his mother, a civil rights activist, was killed in the South under suspicious circumstances. Devastated by his wife's death, Alex's father focuses all his affection on his athletic older son, Ivan, and has little to do with "book wormish" Alex, who presumably reminds him of his deceased wife.

Alex's existence as an inner city youth exposes him to many shocking incidences of violent crime, but none more disturbing than the night he witnesses the brutal drive-by shooting of his brother, an aspiring basketball star. His brother was the only bright spot in his life and after his death, Alex finds himself alone with an emotionally decimated father who completely withdraws from life. Alex realizes that education is his only way out of his torturous environment, so he applies himself in school and graduates as class valedictorian with a full scholarship to a prestigious black college.

College life finds an ambitious Alex applying himself rigorously in hopes of changing his fortune. When he unwittingly intervenes during an attack on the mayor's daughter, he somehow emerges as a hero and suddenly finds himself a campus celebrity. The mayor expresses his gratitude by taking up Alex's cause and starts backing him financially and Alex finds his long awaited avenue into the world of the privileged. But the mayor is leading a double life, which plunges an unsuspecting Alex into a nightmarish world of danger and deception.

Collen Dixon's new novel is a disturbing commentary on the social infrastructure of the urban ghetto and gives insight into what motivates some inner-city youth to rise above their circumstance and break down the socioeconomic barriers imposed on them by an unforgiving society. SIMON SAYS tends to be a bit predictable in spots, but nonetheless is an intriguing, well written whodunit which will keep the reader interested from its very somber beginning to its extremely bizarre ending.
