Book Description
This best-selling text is summarized by "classic text, modern presentation." Its emphasis on fundamental skills and concepts and clearly explained problem-solving strategies continues to be a strength. The revision builds on the highly praised style and applications to everyday life that have earned this text a reputation as the voice of authority in general chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
worst chem book ever.......2001-06-07
This is the most horrible chemistry book, I have ever seen. There are so many mistakes, there are not enough examples with clear explanations, and it looks as if the authors spent about 10 minutes trying to organize this. I have used other chemistry books, and not to say that they are perfect, but this book really is horrible. Try and spend a couple dollars doing research on how to organize. When you introduce a topic in chapter 4, do not say it will be explained in chapter 11. Explain all topics the first time you mention them!
The Best Out There.......1999-07-28
This is truly the best g. chem. book I've seen, out of about 6 or 7. It's not too complex, but not too simple either. For pre-med students a must -- it helped me score a 14 in the physical section of the MCAT
Finally a chemistry book worth having!.......1999-04-28
I have a B.S. in Chemistry and tutor it at our local junior college where this book is the one being used for the course. I have never found a general chem book good enough to keep until now. The text and examples are very clear and easy to follow and understand. The pictures and sections on chemistry in the real world are enlightening. I was so impressed with this book that I actually bought it to keep for my own library, and I didn't need to do that because I was required to have it! The only thing I would like to see them improve on the next edition is the index. This is done as a combination glossary/index and there are many things that I have tried to find in the index that are not listed. So get a better indexer on the next edition!

Great Textbook.......2007-06-01
I used this textbook while taking AP chem in high school. I found myself relying heavily on the book and less so on the teacher's lectures. I must say that I think it's one of the best general chemistry books (I've read others) in terms of organization, practice problems, and explanations. I think it prepared me very well for the AP test and gave me a solid foundation in chemistry. I'd recommend it for anyone trying to learn chemistry by themselves too; it is very user-friendly and to the point. If you are going to read a textbook intently, this is a good choice. If you just want to be sprinkled with magic "chemistry knowledge", I'm not sure that there exists a text for you :)
Make the hurt stop!!!.......2006-07-28
If it were not for all of the pretty pictures in this book, I might be inclined to give this book one star. As it stands, 2 stars is more than this abysmal tome deserves anyway. This is the most confusing textbook I have ever owned. The entire book is smothered in pointless and overdone charts, graphs, and tables, the language is probably better suited for a third or fourth year chemistry student (for the most part), and half of the chapters appear to be out of order. For chapters towards the end of the text, answers in the back of the book are cut short (maybe to save space?). Sometimes the authors of the book ramble on as if conversing with a PhD friend of theirs, apparently forgetting that some students reading this text are seeing this material for the first time, and need a very concise explanation for some of the concepts. Quite a few of the sample problems in the book assume complete mastery of previous chapters, often offering no clue or rationale for steps that are used to solve the problem. This has been by far the most frustrating experience I have had with any textbook. I would avoid it, if possible. If you're a professor looking for a good text that clearly explains general chemistry to your students in a non-threatening manner, well - look elswhere. This one is hurtful. Stay away.

Extremely Helpful Text.......2004-07-21
This text is great! I hardly ever went to class and rarely paid attention, but I read all the corresponding chapters and they are SO CLEAR that you understand everything perfectly. I made the HIGHEST GRADE in my chemistry 102 class and set the curve in lab, all thanks to this book and it's crystal clear explanations. The examples in the text are super helplful. Also, you should buy the companion solutions manual and study guide, they are helpful as well.

Book Description
The state of the art of the impact assessment of recycled hazardous waste materials on surface and ground waters is presented. The topics include chemodynamics, toxicology, modeling and information systems.Due to the wealth of information on this topic, the texts of T. Kassim (ed.): Environmental Impact Assessment are published in three separate volumes: vol. 1: Concepts, Methodology and Chemical Analysis; vol. 2: Risk Analysis and vol. 3: Engineering Modeling and Sustainability. The book serves as a practical conceptual guide for those who have professional responsibility for the monitoring, design, management, or conduct of environmental impact assessment. It is believed that the book will prove useful to the reader who, regardless of disciplinary background, wants to examine in greater detail the kinds of interdisciplinary contributions to contemporary decision-making processes that characterize modern impact assessment project development. Each volume contains the contents of all volumes.

From an Ontological Point of View

Book Description
This book, based on Jaegwon Kim's 1996 Townsend Lectures, presents the philosopher's current views on a variety of issues in the metaphysics of the mind--in particular, the mind-body problem, mental causation, and reductionism. Kim construes the mind-body problem as that of finding a place for the mind in a world that is fundamentally physical. Among other points, he redefines the roles of supervenience and emergence in the discussion of the mind-body problem. Arguing that various contemporary accounts of mental causation are inadequate, he offers his own partially reductionist solution on the basis of a novel model of reduction. Retaining the informal tone of the lecture format, the book is clear yet sophisticated.
Customer Reviews:
A Defunct Reductionism.......2006-03-22
This book amalgamates and contextualizes much of Kim's journal publications within the last twenty years. So, readers expecting something entirely fresh may be a bit disappointed. That being said, this book, or the equivalent articles, is a must for anyone wishing to espouse functionalist second-order properties, or is hunting new ways of maintaining the strict physicalism of the mind. To Kim's credit, significant criticisms have been few and far between, and most share the attitude and thinness of Ned Block's causal drainage argument that if there is no ultimate atom, causal powers seep into minute infinity.
I might add, as somewhat of a disclaimer - just so you don't blame me later - this little book has all the dormitivity of a hand full of Seconals washed down with a bottle of Beefeater. Enjoy.
you've got to be kidding.......2005-04-18
The emperor is getting mighty chilly in
his new duds. Anyone who thinks that
restating the obvious dilemmas and repeating
the word 'supervene' on every other page will
advance the discussion of the mind-body
problem has gone soft in the cranium.
Readers desiring a honest hard scientific look at
this problem would do far better by consulting
the number of recent titles - all variations on
'how the brain creates the mind'.
Let's get serious about the metaphysics of mind.......2001-05-12
This is a must for anyone who's in need of an adequate physicalist metaphysics for the mind. Kim's clarity invites even the not so technically trained young philosopher to consider the puzzles that arise when one is committed to an antireductionist stance on the nature of mentality. Aside from its excellent historical account of the mind-body problem since the Smart-Feigl central-state materialism, I think that the major contribution this book makes is precisely the confrontation of the possibility of us remaining antireductionists and still consistently claim that the mental is real, in the sense of its having autonomous causal potency.
If you believe, as many functionalists do, that mental properties (functional properties) could be understood as second-order properties defined in terms of the causal/nomic relations of its first-order realizers, please read this book!! You'll be surprised by how untidy the metaphysics of functionalism has been since its inception in the late sixties.
Kim once more has shown that his work is here to stay.
In my top ten philosophy books! Wow!.......2000-08-31
This book is great because after a great page you turn and get another, and another.... For the reader, an orgiastic feast of clear, insightful explanations of reductionism, the reigning non-reductive materialism, and dualism. Kim admittedly has no startlingly new theory which he hasn't expressed before, so the book is more of a textbook than a new thesis. But it simply overflows with illuminating presentations of the various aspects of the mind-body problem. And the argument that our only real choices are substance dualism and hardcore reductionism is excellent. Kim, no substance dualist, opts for reductionism. Non-reductive materialist functionalism, property dualism, anomalous monism - all these are either confusions or substance dualism in disguise. It gives us epiphenomenalist property dualists a kick in the rear. CORRECTION: I recently met Kim and asked him whether he was a reductionist, just to make sure. He said that people often misread him that way. Yes, he's saying there is a stark choice between dualism and reductionism, with no "non-reductive materialist" middle ground. But he's a dualist (actually, a property dualist, not a substance dualist).
Consciousness and Functional Reduction.......2000-05-14
Kim's proposal about reduction is persuasive. Since Nagelian Model of standard reduction collapsed, most of philosophers haven't dared make one. But now we have Kim's functional reduction.
But it is suspicious that his reduction can be applied to the case of consciousness. He said that qualia problem is not captured by materialism and non-reductive materialism must meet the problem of downward causation or causal realism.(in "Philosophy of Mind" 1996) So, he confessed that he confronted two horns of dilemma.
His latest book(this book) couldn't solve that problem. But I'm expecting his next elaboration.
Anyway, in this book, he achieves new model of reduction through his original arguments! He has overcome the problem of functionalism vs physicalism!

Making Things Happen: A Theory of Causal Explanation (Oxford Studies in the Philosophy of Science)
ASIN: 0521780497 |
Book Description
Physical Causation discusses in a systematic way an original, positive account of causation: the conserved quantities account of causal processes that Phil Dowe has been developing over the past ten years. Dowe offers a clear and original account of causation based firmly in contemporary science. This is an important, original book that will be widely discussed among philosophers and students working in contemporary metaphysics and philosophy of science, and also scientists with an interest in foundational issues.

Book Description
This book provides a post-positivist theory of deterministic and probabilistic causality that supports both quantitative and qualitative explanations. Features of particular interest include the ability to provide true explanations in contexts where our knowledge is incomplete, a systematic interpretation of causal modeling techniques in the social sciences, and a direct realist view of causal relations that is compatible with a liberal empiricism. The book should be of wide interest to both philosophers and scientists.

Book Description
Our encounters with the physical world are filled with miraculous puzzles-wind appears from somewhere, heavy objects (like oil tankers) float on oceans, yet smaller objects go to the bottom of our water-filled buckets. As adults, instead of confronting a whole world, we are reduced to driving from one parking garage to another. The Child's Conception of Physical Causality, part of the very beginning of the ground-breaking work of the Swiss naturalist Jean Piaget, is filled with creative experimental ideas for probing the most sophisticated ways of thinking in children.
The strength of Piaget's research is evident in this collection of empirical data, systematically organized by tasks that illuminate how things work. Piaget's data are remarkably rich. In his new introduction, Jaan Valsiner observes that Piaget had no grand theoretical aims, yet the book's simple power cannot be ignored. Piaget's great contribution to developmental psychology was his "clinical method"-a tactic that integrated relevant aspects of naturalistic experiment, interview, and observation. Through this systematic inquiry, we gain insight into children's thinking.
Reading Piaget will encourage the contemporary reader to think about the unity of psychological phenomena and their theoretical underpinnings. His wealth of creative experimental ideas probes into the most sophisticated ways of thinking in children. Technologies change, yet the creative curiosity of children remains basically unhindered by the consumer society. Piaget's data preserve the reality of the original phenomena. As such, this work will provide a wealth of information for developmental psychologists and those involved in the field of experimental science.

Book Description
This is a book about some of the basic concepts of metaphysics: universals, particulars, causality, and possibility. Its aim is to give an account of the real constituents of the world. The author defends a realistic view of universals, characterizing the notion of universal by considering language and logic, possibility, hierarchies of universals, and causation. On the other hand, he argues that logic and language are not reliable guides to the nature of reality. All assertions and predications about the natural world are ultimately founded on "basic universals," which are the fundamental type of universal and central to causation. A distinction is drawn between unified particulars (which have a natural principle of unity) and arbitrary particulars (which lack such a principle); unified particulars are the terms of causal relations and thus real constituents of the world. Arbitrary particulars such as events, states of affairs, and sets have no ontological significance.

Book Description
In a random process, later events seem to be loosely attached to earlier ones; in other words, a substantial or tight relationship between the two is missing. This relationship is sometimes held to be the relation of cause and effect, so that random events are not caused by what preceded them. Richard Johns, however, adopts the original stance that random events are fully caused and lack only determination by their causes; according to his causal theory of chance, the physical chance of an event is the degree to which the event is determined by its causes.
A Theory of Physical Probability addresses an important and, until now, poorly comprehended topic: chance, or physical probability. It puts forth Johns's theory of physical chance and demonstrates the implications of this theory in various areas of physics. Johns's is a novel approach to a fundamental topic in such disciplines as philosophy, philosophy of science, and physics, and it will be widely admired by scholars for its clarity and accessibility.

From the supplier: The growing number of documented HIV/AIDS cases and the possibility of HIV/AIDS transmission during athletic competitions require that institutions and school administrations adopt a general exposure control policy. The Centers for Disease Control has recommended universal precautions which can be used by athletic trainers, coaches and physical educators. These exposure control procedures, which include personal protective barriers, biohazardous waste disposal and communication of hazards to employees, will help reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission among athletes and physical education participants.

Book Description
A humorous "romp" with Hindu gods and goddesses as they conduct fieldwork on Earthculture, using state-of-the-art documentary techniques and technologies, to determine what wrong with their creation before they destroy it. Data collected from courtesans and swamis presented at soirees lead to hearings in the Heavenly Assembly when even the highly respected Viswakarman, the designer of the universe, finds himself under the gavel of the portly elephantine judge, Lord Ganesha. Squabbles over methodology and ethics cause accusations to fly, and much of the action parodies academia, exposing the foibles and fallacies of university politics, culminating in a uniquely spiritual vision of entropy. The book has delighted Indologists, folklorists, anthropologists, students, and non-academicians as well.
