This encyclopedic monograph, designed by Lars M ller in the same spirit as his Peter Zumthor: Works, is the first on Vi oly, and includes projects in the United States, Argentina, Egypt, Korea, and Japan. Featured are the recently opened Kimmel Performing Arts Center-the new home of the Philaldelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Convention Center, the Climate Prediction Center on the Palisades, the Princeton University Stadium, and the dazzling Tokyo Forum-the gracefully expressive building Muschamp describes as "an absolutist building, perfectly realized."
An essay by Joan Ockman, Director of the Buell Center of American Architecture at Columbia University, introduces Vi oly's work, which is copiously documented in more than 500 color images and drawings.

Rafael Viñoly.......2003-06-08
As the senior member of the ad-hoc Think team, Viñoly came in a close second in the competition to rebuild Ground Zero, and earlier won acclaim for the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts Center in Philadelphia, and Tokyo International Forum. Each lifts the spirits, as surely as this ugly, congested compendium depresses them. However, Viñoly's account of leaving junta-run Argentina and re-establishing himself in New York is riveting. Fuzzy Structuralism.......2003-05-24
The 320 page monograph designed by Lars Muller catalogues the works of Viñoly to date. It is a comprehensive representation of projects from his formative years in Argentina to some of his most recent completed buildings including the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. Organized around an unorthodox sequential composition, the oversized book began with a series of medium scale civic and public projects in Buenos Aires. Seemingly intentional, a sense of "labyrinth clarity" forces one to interact with the intertwining projects through a shifting timeline.
There are moments in the book when images of the architectural projects were momentarily interrupted, one of which is a compiled interview, where Viñoly speaks about his first ever winning project as a student; to his over-mystified entry to the architecture scene in New York; to how RVA grew disproportionally after the Tokyo Forum Competition was won. Another porosity break in the book was an essay by Joan Ockman, where she describes the practice of RVA emerges as the "Third" typology. Positioned somewhere in-between the fields of large corporate offices and the small "boutique" design firms, enjoying the benefits of working along the margins of both.
A beautifully composed yet shamelessly reproduced book, the monograph emphasizes Viñoly's interest in the pursuit of "explicit structuralism" and 70's Dutch Structuralist. Working under no particular formal language, his works continues to evolve around the use of implicit and/ or explicit structural negotiations. Best representative of that idea is the project in Pittsburgh, where a sense of fuzzy structuralism is expressed through the dialogue between the structure and the skin. As it can be seen by the selected images, spaces are walled with expressively apparent structural dependency while it bears an indirect relationship to the use of finished materials.
The book in many ways reflects intimately to the practice and the work of RVA as a kind of meeting place in between the empirical and the anticipatory.

When world-renowned architect Rafael Viñoly was commissioned to design a major new center for the arts at Duke University, he set about creating his first museum in North America and the first stand-alone museum in Duke’s eighty-year history. The resulting 65,000-square-foot building has changed the cultural landscape of the university and indeed the Southeast.This book documents the genesis and design of the new museum, which opens on October 2, 2005. The building is named in honor of the family of Raymond D. Nasher, an internationally prominent art collector who graduated from Duke in 1943.The landmark building takes its place among Viñoly’s other distinguished designs, including the new home for Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York and expansion projects for the Cleveland Museum of Art, the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum in New York. Among his other cultural projects are the Tokyo International Forum and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. He is designing the new Tampa Museum of Art and a new museum in the city of Colchester, England. He was part of the team that created the runner-up design for the new World Trade Center site in New York City.The brilliant core of the Nasher at Duke is a 13,000-square-foot glass and steel canopy rising to a height of 45 feet above the central gallery space. The faceted roof soars above the irregular pentagonal great hall, where five concrete pavilions fan out at different angles. The pavilions will house three large gallery spaces, an auditorium, offices, university and community classrooms, a museum shop, and a café with outdoor seating overlooking a sculpture garden. Set in the forest on Duke’s campus, the museum’s full-height glass walls and green slate floor connect the pavilions and further blur the division between building and nature.With an essay by art historian Annabel Jane Wharton, a design statement by museum architect Rafael Viñoly, a foreword by museum namesake Raymond D. Nasher, and photos by Brad Feinknopf and Jerry Blow, this book documents the building that will become a cornerstone for cultural activities for the university and the public.

This study covers the world outlook for aerospace-type shock absorbers, snubbers, and cushions excluding oleo strut assemblies across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
