    Book Description

This landmark book offers a truly integrated perspective for understanding the formation of Jewish and Palestinian Arab identities and relations in Palestine before 1948. Beginning with the late Ottoman period Mark LeVine explores the evolving history and geography of two cities: Jaffa, one of the oldest ports in the world, and Tel Aviv, which was born alongside Jaffa and by 1948 had annexed it as well as its surrounding Arab villages. Drawing from a wealth of untapped primary sources, including Ottoman records, Jaffa Shari'a court documents, town planning records, oral histories, and numerous Zionist and European archival sources, LeVine challenges nationalist historiographies of Jaffa and Tel Aviv, revealing the manifold interactions of the Jewish and Palestinian Arab communities that lived there.
At the center of the book is a discussion of how Tel Aviv's self-definition as the epitome of modernity affected its and Jaffa's development and Jaffa's own modern pretenses as well. As he unravels this dynamic, LeVine provides new insights into how popular cultures and public spheres evolved in this intersection of colonial, modern, and urban space. He concludes with a provocative discussion of how these discourses affected the development of today's unified city of Tel Aviv-Yafo and, through it, Israeli and Palestinian identities within in and outside historical Palestine.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Material.......2005-02-28

As on online vintage jewelry dealer, Atlanta vintage jewelry dot com, Warman's book was one of the first in my reference library. Sure, it has some faults, but not to the degree to make the book 'useless'. I used to spend my evenings in bed reading through the pages, getting familiar with the vast array of information.

The book includes excellent pictures with clarity, and lots of them. It covers jewelry designs from various eras, beginning in the mid-1700's through present day.

Many people in the vintage jewelry circles may refer to Warman's as the 'bible' of vintage jewelry as it also covers both fine and costume.

In spite of its somewhat unreliable index referred to by others, this hefty book is well worth the purchase price. I'm glad for mine.

    5 out of 5 stars Drool . . ........2004-08-15

Over the years, Warman's guides to antiques have established a reputation for reliability. This volume is the third (2002) edition of their jewelry guide. It's lavishly illustrated with examples from many styles, eras, and price ranges. It provides a feast for the eyes and a lot of useful information as well.

Romero divides the material according to time period and, when appropriate, according to style and material and country of origin. She gives concise summaries of the essentials of each and links jewelry fashions to world events and clothing styles. Sometimes her discussions are a little too concise for this curious reader ( to be fair, the book is a guide, not an in-depth treatment), but she provides a full bibliography at the end for those who want to dig deeper. There's also a glossary of jewelry-related terminology and a section on marks.

According to the introduction, this edition reflects the increasing globalization of the marketplace and the influence of internet buying. Romero has expanded coverage of Scandinavian jewelry and added discussions of Neo-Renaissance and Beaux-Arts jewelry. Every illustration is in color, and the captions are fully detailed. Several reviewers of earlier editions mentioned that there were problems with the index. These problems seem to have been corrected in this edition.

Any problems I have with this book are mostly quibbles. The author makes a point of linking changes in jewelry fashions to changes in clothing and in social conditions. I wish that she had put in a few period illustrations showing the fashions and the jewelry worn with them. This is probably a little out of the reach of an identification and value guide, but it would have been a nice touch. Nonetheless, this is a wonderful resource for jewelry collectors and, in fact for anyone who thinks they might like to become one.

5 out of 5 stars A visual feast for jewelry lovers.......2004-04-10

"Warman's Jewelry," 3rd edition, by Christie Romero, is subtitled "A Fully Illustrated Identification and Price Guide to 18th, 19th, & 20th Century Fine and Costume Jewelry." The book is full of fascinating and useful features, among them an extensive bibliography, glossary, index, and chronology. There are also a number of appendices, including a hallmark identification guide and a guide to the marks and names on Mexican silver jewelry and metalware.

The 272-page book is full of hundreds of clear, beautiful full color photos of jewelry. Each photo is accompanied by essential information on each piece depicted. The items shown represent a huge price span; in this book you'll see a $336,000.00 gem-encrusted platinum bracelet, a $10.00 brooch shaped like a poodle, and lots in between. Many types of jewelry are pictured: necklaces, cufflinks, earrings, lockets, scarf pins, etc. Included are pieces representing a broad variety of artistic approaches: whimsical, elegant, gaudy, graceful, fierce, futuristic.

Also fascinating is the broad range of materials covered: diamonds, emeralds, opals, turquoise, gold, coral, agate, wood, rhinestones, plastic, brass, porcelain, etc. The photography is accompanied by an interesting, well-written text. Jewelry production is placed in historical and cultural context. There are also special sections devoted to jewelry of particular cultures (Native American, Mexican, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish). Interesting trends such as Victorian-era black jewelry and "eye miniatures" are also highlighted. Overall, this is an endlessly interesting and stunningly beautiful reference work.

AS AN OLDER PERSON, I HAVE 'LIVED THROUGH' MANY OF THE FADS WHICH JEWELRY MANUFACTURERS REFLECT. I STARTED COLLECTING JEWELRY, AND DECIDED TO WRITE A RESOURCE BOOK FOR THE NOVICE. WELL, WHEN I READ MS. ROMERO'S BOOK, I FOUND THAT IT WAS SO INCLUSIVE THAT IN ORDER TO FILL IN THE GAPS, AS IT WERE, MY WORK IS REALLY CUT OUT FOR ME. THIS BOOK IS A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO ANY JEWELRY COLLECTOR'S REFERENCE LIBRARY. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME THE SPACE TO REVIEW IT.

        Book Description

Although bottles specially made to contain perfume have been used since antiquity, in modern times their designs have become as varied and original as the exotic scents they contain. Their history in the twentieth century has been marked by the development of elaborate packaging: boxes, labels, ribbons, and medallions. The product of modern marketing--an attempt to create a personality for each perfume with its own distinctive name--perfume bottles have been the work of some of the century's finest designers. This lavishly illustrated survey presents some of the most striking designs, outlines the historical and social background to their creation, and reflects the talents of leading designers such as Ren Lalique, Lucien Gaillard, and Julien Viard, as well as glassmakers including Baccarat, Dpinoix, Brosse, and Lalique. Inspired creations resulting from close collaborations are also explored, such as between Paul Poiret--the first couturier to introduce his own perfumes--and his artist friends, among them Paul Iribe and Georges Lepape; or Elsa Schiaparelli and the Surrealist painter Salvador Dal. A passionate collector of perfume bottles, the author has made a detailed study of company records, trade journals, and other archival material. She has also interviewed leading figures in the perfume industry, their associates, or their surviving relatives. With its authoritative historical analysis, more than 200 illustrations in color, and a reference section listing over 500 major perfumers, designers, and glassmakers, this book provides an indispensable record for collectors and designers alike.

        5 out of 5 stars Top notch.......2006-05-24

This book does an excellent job of showing the cream of the crop of collectable 19th and 20th century perfume bottles (and often their presentation boxes). The text is profusely illustrated with small black and white photos, while also containing several full color sections illustrating in detail hundreds of different bottles. The text goes into intricate detail for the novice to expert collector without dumbing it up or talking down. The 16 pages of concise bibliographys at the back are infinately useful, if you are wondering when where why who or how a house started its probably in this list. Jam packed with facts, tips, annecdotes and illustrations by a TRUE expert in the field.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice and interesting book.......2000-02-05

I know that the writers are savvy perfume bottle collectors. They have incorporated years of experience into this book. That is the reason why that among all the books on this subject, this one is the most appealing. I have also used part of her materials (w/permission) to write my book (published in Chinese).

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......1999-08-10

As an avid collector of advertisements and literature on perfume, this is the first book I always recommend to fellow collectors. In the past ten or twelve years, many books were published to cater to the exploding popularity of perfume bottles as a collectors item. Christie Lefkowith's book stands out because of its focus on the ART of perfume bottles (hence the title), rather than their monetary value. Bottles are viewed in the cultural context of their time, with photographs of by far THE best quality I have ever seen in perfume books. I agree with the previous reviewer, though: too bad the book ends with the fifties. There should be a sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful history & refrence of bottles.......1999-07-31

This book is lavished with the most magnificent perfume bottles and their pacaging. full color photos of Lalique, Baccarat, and other exquisite bottles along with the histories of the fragrance companies who commissioned them. There is also an index of these companies for quick refrence. I found the title missleading. the author is of the belief that the "art of perfume" died 30 years ago. All of the bottles are from the late 1800's to the 1960's and I feel that the title should have mentioned this. If you collect antique bottles or are looking for a good fragrance history book, this is a must.

              Book Description

Gathered here is a beguiling selection of folktales from Zimbabwe and Botswana as retold by the best-selling author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. This treasury contains most of the stories previously collected in Children of Wax and seven new tales from the Setswana-speaking people of Botswana.

A girl discovers that her young husband might actually be a lion in disguise, but not before they have two sons who might actually be cubs . . . When a child made of wax follows his curiosity outside into the heat of daylight and melts, his siblings shape him into a bird with feathers made of leaves that enable him to fly into the light . . . Talking hyenas, milk-giving birds, clever cannibals who nonetheless get their comeuppance, and mysterious forces that reside in the landscape—these wonderful fables bring us the wealth, the variety, and the particular magic of traditional African lore.

2 out of 5 stars For folktale lovers only.......2006-11-04

I love "The number one detective agency" series, and hoped for the same writing quality in this collection of folk tales. Unfortunately there was no narrative flow, making the stories stilted and un-interesting. Maybe a narrative explaining the lessons would have helped.

I suggest this book only for those interested in collecting african fables

              3 out of 5 stars ...and?.......2006-05-09

I don't get it. These are stories that give us a glimpse into African culture, where "fat" is healthy, and watering holes are sources of life.

Some of the stories were like Brier Rabbit, adn were clever. But, unlike Western stories, I really wasn't sure what the moral of the stories were. Take the girl who married a lion. The brother thinks "It IS a lion," then he chases it away. And, here's the riviting part...(don't read this if you don't want the ending spoiled)...the children end up NOT being lions!

              That's it.

              End of story.

I just don't get it. I LOVE A-M-S's other books, they are brilliant. This one just doesn't do it for me.

              2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-04-06

I have read and enjoyed all the volumes involving the "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency." This was a book I eagerly anticipated, but found very disappointing. The stories seem to be simply retellings of very simple, but ambiguous, themes. It didn't have anything which stuck with me (except a quizzical expression on my face, I guess).

5 out of 5 stars Thirty-three simply told African folktales; some will inspire, some will puzzle, some will just make you smile........2006-03-20

This is a delightful collection of folktales of Botswana and Zimbabwe re-told by that extraordinary Scottish author, Alexander McCall Smith. Smith was born in Zimbabwe and spent many years on the African continent and even taught law at the University of Botswana. (Botswana is the home of that wise and traditionally-built lady detective, Mme Precious Ramotswe. Mme Ramotswe was kind enough to write a letter about the book that is included at the beginning of this set of tales.)

Smith states that he has taken certain liberties in the telling of these tales to make them more appealing to a broader readership. Animals and people are somewhat interchangeable in African lore and that is apparent in these stories. Examples of the titles are: Guinea Fowl Child; Sister of Bones; Children of Wax; The Girl Who Married a Lion; Two Bad Friends. Most of the stories have a lesson, although some are a little obtuse. Some of the stories bear some similarities to folktales of other lands; universal truths, as it were.

One of my favorites is Sister of Bones; another is Why Elephant and Hyena Live Far From People; another, Two Friends Who Met for Dinner (love this one!). This book is a good one to leave close at hand for a quick read or re-read of a favorite story. The stories range in number of pages from three or four to eight or nine, and are very easy to read. Some might be a little scary for youngsters, but, then, so are the Brothers Grimm, and Bambi.

                  Book Description

For generations, the women of the South African Ndebele tribe have produced a rich, living art. They continue to do so today, conjuring up on the walls of their houses a world of spontaneous forms with intricate beadwork and wall painting. Their dynamic compositions and blazing colors show a bold graphic quality that makes them appear stunningly fresh and modern.

Margaret Courtney-Clarke spent five years visiting the Ndebele and recording their art. Her work on this book began long before the political upheavals following the end of apartheid and the coming to power of the black majority in South Africa. The Ndebele from the southern Transvaal, whose art is documented here, were violently displaced and forcibly resettled in the newly created KwaNdebele homeland. During her later visits Courtney-Clarke discovered that more and more of her favorite paintings had decayed or disappeared after the family had either moved away or been forcibly resettled. The result in several cases is that her photographs are the only surviving documents of some of the most impressive of Ndebele artworks.

These photographs bear witness to a people who, despite unspeakable suffering, have continued to decorate their surroundings with breathtaking brilliance and passion. 191 color photographs.

I saw this book at the home of an artist friend once. These portraits of East African women and their exquisitely painted homes are rare gems indeed. What I also appreciate about this work is that photographer Margaret Courtney-Clarke lavishes such attention and respect to the other cultural aspects of these beautiful people that she could be labeled a sociologist as well.

The publisher, Rizzoli, sows an appropriately generous amount of quality into this book; even the paper is noticeably superior.

My only question is, when will this magnificent work be made available again? I've had it on order at several stores for well over a year now!

                    Book Description

While numerous texts have dealt with the AIDS pandemic in Africa—from the clinical, economic, and sociological to the academic and technical—this anthology of poems and short stories connects on a human level and reflects an entire society dealing with the challenges of overcoming AIDS and HIV. Well-known writers such as Achmat Dangor, Dambudzo Marechera, and Sindiwe Magona join 16 new writers selected from the "Share Your Story about HIV/AIDS" creative writing competition funded by the Swedish donor foundation, SIDA, and conducted in collaboration with the University of Cape Town. Their intimate stories and poems explore love, sexuality, stigma, and loss, bearing witness to the disease and responding to its silent taboo.

Reading this book my daugther(6yrs.) and I enjoyed a special moment learning about how beautiful are the simple things. And gave us the oportunity to learn how easy is to celebrate life and love.
The most important lesson of all is to be proud of what we love and care.

5 out of 5 stars Anthopology for Children.......2002-11-04

I am a senior in college, and an elementary education major with a minor in anthropology- when I found this book, I was estatic. Its beautiful photography is greatly complimented with Maya Angelou's flowing words. Humor, color, and the similarities with the Ndebele girl (Thandi, which means hope) are sure to attract children. They will learn that even though Thandi is across the world, all children share many similaries- a lesson that should be remembered, especially in modern times. I will definately use this in my classroom someday. Never have I seen such a great childrens book that is infused with anthropology and the study of a culture!

5 out of 5 stars Shows the pure heart of a child.......2000-03-22

I bought this book today and read it with my 10 year old niece. It has exceptionally beautiful photographs of the Ndebele people. It is a story that reminds us that the simple things in life are the most precious. Thandi tells the story of her people and family and her best friend, a chicken. She is a proud and pure hearted child that shares the culture of the Ndebele people with us. This is a lovely story that is a fun, educational, easy to read one that made me feel young at heart again. I'll be needing an additional copy to share with my grandaughter.

                    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding children's story!.......1997-12-14

As a reading tutor, I have enjoyed sharing this book with my 4th grade students. It examins the differences of people, our different cultures, and is a colorful and enchanting story. My kids, both boys and girls are facinated by this book, and we always continue a dialogue with it. The recognize the author, as one their parents respect, and enjoy talking about it and laughing about the silly chicken. We have talked about trying to paint houses with a chicken feather, and may jsut try to do this during black history month! I adore this book!

5 out of 5 stars An incredibly entertaining epic........2007-05-24

I read all three of Mr. Smith's books in this series (in order) and I heartily recommend them all. The author is a master of the art of descriptive prose and leaves you feeling as if you've been there. As I've said before, Mr. Smith could write a story about paint drying and make it a fascinating read.

whatever smith writes will become an incredible ride to live. So do not hesitate to buy a book from him. I readed almost all his books and always looking for more. What a joy!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Ballantyne novels so far...........2007-03-28

I have 2 to go in the series and this is shaping up to be another great family saga. I didn't love the prior novel, but this one was great.....You still have to read them all and in order....

4 out of 5 stars This Effectively Ties Up The Ballantyne Saga.......2006-02-24

"The Angels Weep" functions as the closer to the Ballantyne Family series begun with "A Falcon Flies" and "Men of Men." Don't read this before having read these first two. There's another book starring a Ballantyne relation that follows this (and the recent "Triumph of the Sun" an afterthought), but it's dispensible and adds nothing to the arc of these three books.

This is a satisfying closer to the saga-- it tells the story of the birth of Rhodesia, and its death. It's a very bloody tale of black against white-- for those who want a good notion of the historical roots of Zimbabwe, these three books can't be beat. Smith is sometimes accused of racism and sexism, but he's telling a story where these issues can't be ignored, and he does a reasonable job of representing both viewpoints, invader and invaded, black and white, winners and losers. He's clumsy with the romance, but excellent with the battles and the reasons behind them. Worth tracking down.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart.......2001-08-17

I think this book is one of Wilbur Smith's best books. It tells the history of the struggle between the blacks and whites in present-day Zimbabwe. This book probably has more violence and bloodshed than any book I've ever read. However, it tells an important story and has some powerful messages.

                            Book Description

Sustainable development presents important challenges to environmental research, such as developing perspectives and methods that clarify the links between societal activities, resource use, and pollution. With this challenge in mind, this book presents examples of the industrial metabolism approach to analyzing regional environmental change and discusses the problems of combining economic restructuring with environmental cleanup. The book is based on the work of two IIASA projects focused on environmental development in two regions of Central Europe: the Rhine Basin and the Black Triangle-Upper Silesia region. Among the most important contributions from these research efforts are the analysis of flows and pollution from both a historical and a geographical perspective, and the combination of these studies with analyses of the regions' social and institutional development.
