Beyond Conventional Quantization
John R. Klauder Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521675480 |
Book Description
This text describes novel treatments of quantum problems using enhanced quantization procedures, generally involving extended correspondence rules for the association of a classical and a quantum theory. Beginning with a review of classical mechanics, the book goes on to detail Hilbert space, quantum mechanics, and scalar quantum field theory. Later chapters further develop analytical skills, study a special class of models, and present a discussion of continuous and discontinuous perturbations. The final chapter offers a brief summary, concluding with a conjecture regarding interacting covariant scalar quantum field theories. Throughout, symmetry is used as a tool to help develop solutions for simple and complex problems alike. Challenging exercises and detailed references are included.

Citizen Girl is the sophomore effort from Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, whose Nanny Diaries sent Park Avenue mothers running for cover and catapulted the duo to cult-like status amongst gossip literature's elite. This time around, our heroine is Girl, a twentysomething women's studies major whose liberal arts education led her to believe that saving women from worldwide oppression was as easy as reporting for duty at her local feminist non-profit. As Girl soon learns, no job is ever as it seems, and even the director of the Center for Equity in Community is not free from manipulating her staff in order to get ahead. As we follow Girl through unemployment and an eventual position as the Director of Rebranding Knowledge Acquisition for My Company, McLaughlin and Kraus invite readers on a raucous journey though the ups and downs of early 21st Century corporate life. While at times disjointed and overly crass, Citizen Girl certainly has its moments. Most post-grad women will be able to identify with Girl on at least some level, whether it be returning to Career Services with her tail between her legs or forgiving her boyfriend for hiring a stripper at his best friend's bachelor party. ("I turn to find Buster slumped on my front stoop, soaked to the skin behind a proffered bouquet of hopeful white tulips.")
Some readers may tire of Girl's particular combination of naiveté and idealism after the first 50 pages, and the blatant stereotypes may wear thin after a while (Girl's boss at My Company is named Guy, and the woman they hire to turn things around is called Manley). Still, Girl's story is intriguing enough that by the end of the book, most of us will be rooting for her as she negotiates her way through the tumultuous battlefield that often is corporate America. --Gisele Toueg

"Another biting satire from Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Nanny Diaries. Working in a world where a college degree qualifies her to make photocopies and color-coordinate file folders, twenty-four-year-old Girl is struggling to keep up with the essential trinity of food, shelter, and student loans. So when she finally lands the job of her dreams she ignores her misgivings and concentrates on getting the job done...whatever that may be. Sharply observed and devastatingly funny, Citizen Girl captures with biting accuracy what it means to be young and female in the new economy. A personal glimpse into an impersonal world, Citizen Girl is edgy and heartfelt, an entertaining read that is startlingly relevant. "Customer Reviews:

Why Eleanor Roosevelt set the standard for all First Ladies.......2003-11-11
Of course, young readers are going to be interested in how this child of privilege married her distant cousin. But they will also learn about how Roosevelt was educated at Allenswood, a private school for young women, founded by the feminist Marie Souvestre (there is a short side bar on this). The strength of this juvenile biography is that while Rosenberg keeps tabs on FDR's rise in politics, the focus is on what Eleanor was up to, and the main thing I took away from this book was that she was accomplishing a lot before she became First Lady. I knew that she was FDR's eyes and legs during the White House, and I was familiar with the fine work she did with the United Nations in her later years. But Rosenberg makes the case for an entire lifetime of public service and the last paragraph in the books simply states, "It would be impossible to list all of the things that Eleanor Roosevelt did during her lifetime."
The book is filled with photographs from Eleanor Roosevelt's family and public life, including one from her funeral where we see President John F. Kennedy, former presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, and future president Lyndon M. Johnson in attendance. The margins are crammed with Interesting Facts, such as Eleanor Roosevelt having one ancestor sign the Declaration of Independence and another administer the oath of office to President George Washington, and J. Edgar Hoover keeping a file on her because he did not like her opinions (she had one of the biggest files in F.B.I. history). These are always one of the best parts of these volumes, but Rosenberg really comes up with a lot of good ones.
Eleanor Roosevelt is one of two first ladies who appears in the first set of Our People volumes, the other being Dolley Madison, who was certainly as popular and as respected in her own day as Roosevelt (there are photographs of Dolley Madison which show that even in old age she had a really great smile). These Our People volumes are a nice complementary series to go alogn with the Spirit of America's Our Presidents series.

Girl's Schooling During The Progressive Era: From Female Scholar to Domesticated Citizen (Garland Reference Library of Social Science)
Karen Graves Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Library Binding ASIN: 0815322240 |
Book Description
This work traces the impact of a differentiated curriculum on girls' education in St. Louis public schools from 1870 to 1930. Its central argument is that the premise upon which a differentiated curriculum is founded, that schooling ought to differ among students in order prepare each for his or her place in the social order, actually led to academic decline. The attention given to the intersection of gender, race, and social class and its combined effect on girls' schooling, places this text in the new wave of critical historical scholarship in the field of educational research.

Think of her as Erin Brockovich on a shrimp boat. This unassuming, working-class mom, a fourth-generation East Texas shrimper--"no education, no money, no clout," she says--turned her life upside down to fight the good fight against chemical plants that were destroying her livelihood and the bays she held dear. This comic-book-style biography of unlikely activist Diane Wilson follows her radical transformation, from the first days of pulling up nothing in her nets to her hunger strike, law suits, and run-ins with the EPA.The format might lead you to believe this is strictly kids' stuff, but Wilson and author and Caldecott Honor artist Molly Bang manage to pack a lot of information into the book's mostly black-and-white panels (maybe a little too much for some younger folks). But readers of all ages will find inspiration in this political, feminist tale of how one person--"nobody particular," says Wilson--can fight big business and win. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes
