            Book Description

This text describes novel treatments of quantum problems using enhanced quantization procedures, generally involving extended correspondence rules for the association of a classical and a quantum theory. Beginning with a review of classical mechanics, the book goes on to detail Hilbert space, quantum mechanics, and scalar quantum field theory. Later chapters further develop analytical skills, study a special class of models, and present a discussion of continuous and discontinuous perturbations. The final chapter offers a brief summary, concluding with a conjecture regarding interacting covariant scalar quantum field theories. Throughout, symmetry is used as a tool to help develop solutions for simple and complex problems alike. Challenging exercises and detailed references are included.

Citizen Girl is the sophomore effort from Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, whose Nanny Diaries sent Park Avenue mothers running for cover and catapulted the duo to cult-like status amongst gossip literature's elite. This time around, our heroine is Girl, a twentysomething women's studies major whose liberal arts education led her to believe that saving women from worldwide oppression was as easy as reporting for duty at her local feminist non-profit. As Girl soon learns, no job is ever as it seems, and even the director of the Center for Equity in Community is not free from manipulating her staff in order to get ahead. As we follow Girl through unemployment and an eventual position as the Director of Rebranding Knowledge Acquisition for My Company, McLaughlin and Kraus invite readers on a raucous journey though the ups and downs of early 21st Century corporate life.

While at times disjointed and overly crass, Citizen Girl certainly has its moments. Most post-grad women will be able to identify with Girl on at least some level, whether it be returning to Career Services with her tail between her legs or forgiving her boyfriend for hiring a stripper at his best friend's bachelor party. ("I turn to find Buster slumped on my front stoop, soaked to the skin behind a proffered bouquet of hopeful white tulips.")

Some readers may tire of Girl's particular combination of naiveté and idealism after the first 50 pages, and the blatant stereotypes may wear thin after a while (Girl's boss at My Company is named Guy, and the woman they hire to turn things around is called Manley). Still, Girl's story is intriguing enough that by the end of the book, most of us will be rooting for her as she negotiates her way through the tumultuous battlefield that often is corporate America. --Gisele Toueg

"Another biting satire from Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Nanny Diaries. Working in a world where a college degree qualifies her to make photocopies and color-coordinate file folders, twenty-four-year-old Girl is struggling to keep up with the essential trinity of food, shelter, and student loans. So when she finally lands the job of her dreams she ignores her misgivings and concentrates on getting the job done...whatever that may be. Sharply observed and devastatingly funny, Citizen Girl captures with biting accuracy what it means to be young and female in the new economy. A personal glimpse into an impersonal world, Citizen Girl is edgy and heartfelt, an entertaining read that is startlingly relevant. "

            2 out of 5 stars Trite.......2007-09-14

I listened to the audio version of this book. From the beginning, my attention was captured. I was Girl. I have worked for bosses like "Doris". I could relate to Girl's, horrible, first job out of college. But as the book continues on, Girl's situations and opportunities broaden, but her perspective does not, she does not. I found the book mildly entertaining, only for it being a traumatic experince I could relate to. After the 5th chapter the story dwindled.

            1 out of 5 stars You know there's a problem...........2007-08-28

...when the hype on the cover is about a different book altogether. In this case it's "The Nanny Diaries."

In their first book, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus pooled their babysitting experiences and parlayed them into an entertaining book that left a lot of people trying to figure out just who they were talking about. In "Citizen Girl" they've left the arena they know and created a protagonist who is perplexingly named Girl (Nanny worked a lot better, but you still have to wonder where this antipathy for real names come from) who is fired from a job where she was underappreciated, spends a good quarter of the book looking for another job, goes to work for your typical smooth-operating pig who runs a company that is supposed to focus on women's needs although he doesn't care about them...okay, I'll admit it, that's as far as I got. The characters are caricatures, the details that made the authors' last endeavor such a success are missing, and the story is boring. If you're really curious to see how this book stacks up compared to its predecessor, get it from the library. It's not worth the price. Or better yet, reread the authors' first book. It's a better use of your time.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book I EVER read!.......2007-08-21

This was honestly the worst book I ever read. It was a complete disappointment and waste of time and money. I was really looking forward to reading the next book from the authors of the Nanny Diaries and was completely let down by just about every aspect of this book. It actually started off well, but got worse and worse and ended so badly that words cannot describe it! Please save your time and money. I am fairly certain that I will not waste my time with these authors again.

I really wish that there were negative stars to give to this book!!!!

            1 out of 5 stars NEGATIVE STARS!!!!.......2007-07-29

I loved Nanny Diaries. I hated this book. Not only was it hard to get into, I never got it. The characters had no depth and the story had no entertainment. I skipped many pages trying to pick up what was going on and it never happened. This book left me confused as I'm still trying to figure out the point to it other than a waste of my time. What a disappointment!

4 out of 5 stars Oh come on...it's not that bad..........2007-07-19

What's up with all the negative reviews??? It's not THAT bad! I think the book is a little depressing, but so was The Nanny Diaries. The Nanny Diaries certainly didn't end all warm and fuzzy.

Yes, this book stereotypes executives and greedy corporations, but it's a satire, people!

Citizen Girl is a good book. It's snarky and satirical, yet I can relate to Girl and how she feels like the only human in an alien world. I think that these readers are giving it such a negative review b/c, like The Nanny Diaries, it doesn't have a warm and fuzzy ending. It just ends and this can be unsatisfying to those of us who like our stories wrapped up with pretty paper and shiny bows.

I like the book, but now am going to read something a little more brainless, like Meg Cabot.

5 out of 5 stars Why Eleanor Roosevelt set the standard for all First Ladies.......2003-11-11

There are plenty of history books that document the ways Franklin D. Roosevelt changed both the Presidency and the American government, so it is not really surprising that his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, was just as successful in transforming the role of the First Lady. In this volume for the Our People series, Pam Rosenberg shows young readers why Eleanor Roosevelt was considered both a humanitarian and a world citizen, who managed to make significant accomplishments even after her husband died and she left the White House.

Of course, young readers are going to be interested in how this child of privilege married her distant cousin. But they will also learn about how Roosevelt was educated at Allenswood, a private school for young women, founded by the feminist Marie Souvestre (there is a short side bar on this). The strength of this juvenile biography is that while Rosenberg keeps tabs on FDR's rise in politics, the focus is on what Eleanor was up to, and the main thing I took away from this book was that she was accomplishing a lot before she became First Lady. I knew that she was FDR's eyes and legs during the White House, and I was familiar with the fine work she did with the United Nations in her later years. But Rosenberg makes the case for an entire lifetime of public service and the last paragraph in the books simply states, "It would be impossible to list all of the things that Eleanor Roosevelt did during her lifetime."

The book is filled with photographs from Eleanor Roosevelt's family and public life, including one from her funeral where we see President John F. Kennedy, former presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, and future president Lyndon M. Johnson in attendance. The margins are crammed with Interesting Facts, such as Eleanor Roosevelt having one ancestor sign the Declaration of Independence and another administer the oath of office to President George Washington, and J. Edgar Hoover keeping a file on her because he did not like her opinions (she had one of the biggest files in F.B.I. history). These are always one of the best parts of these volumes, but Rosenberg really comes up with a lot of good ones.

Eleanor Roosevelt is one of two first ladies who appears in the first set of Our People volumes, the other being Dolley Madison, who was certainly as popular and as respected in her own day as Roosevelt (there are photographs of Dolley Madison which show that even in old age she had a really great smile). These Our People volumes are a nice complementary series to go alogn with the Spirit of America's Our Presidents series.

                      Book Description

This work traces the impact of a differentiated curriculum on girls' education in St. Louis public schools from 1870 to 1930. Its central argument is that the premise upon which a differentiated curriculum is founded, that schooling ought to differ among students in order prepare each for his or her place in the social order, actually led to academic decline. The attention given to the intersection of gender, race, and social class and its combined effect on girls' schooling, places this text in the new wave of critical historical scholarship in the field of educational research.

Think of her as Erin Brockovich on a shrimp boat. This unassuming, working-class mom, a fourth-generation East Texas shrimper--"no education, no money, no clout," she says--turned her life upside down to fight the good fight against chemical plants that were destroying her livelihood and the bays she held dear. This comic-book-style biography of unlikely activist Diane Wilson follows her radical transformation, from the first days of pulling up nothing in her nets to her hunger strike, law suits, and run-ins with the EPA.

The format might lead you to believe this is strictly kids' stuff, but Wilson and author and Caldecott Honor artist Molly Bang manage to pack a lot of information into the book's mostly black-and-white panels (maybe a little too much for some younger folks). But readers of all ages will find inspiration in this political, feminist tale of how one person--"nobody particular," says Wilson--can fight big business and win. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

                      Book Description

From a renowned author/illustrator; a bold, daring, non-fiction picture book that tells the true story of one woman's fight to protect her environment.

Sometimes we have to take a stand and do what's right. That's what Diane Wilson thinks. An independent shrimper in Texas, she ekes out a living in the same waters that her family has worked hard in for generations. When Diane learns that the chemical plants in Texas give out more pollution than in any other state, she decides to stop them.

One woman against a powerful industry is not much of a fair fight, but Diane educates herself, lobbies, protests, writes letters, and never gives up. Based on real events, this is an inspiring, heartfelt story of one woman's struggle to take a stand against injustice and indifference.

Award-winning author/illustrator Molly Bang has created a compelling narrative, told inventively through a series of black and white graphic panels set against a richly colored gouache background.

                      Diane Wilson:
"This much I know: Within 25 miles of my house are five giant chemical plants--one each for Alcoa, British Petroleum, DuPont, Formosa Plastics, and Union Carbide. By night they look like magic lit-up fairy castles. In daylight they turn into gray and twisted surrealistic pipe dreams. We grew up high on their strange perfumes, knowing workers whose bathwater turned yellow every night until they died early, knowing we weren't supposed to fish the waters where Alcoa dumped tons of mercury...
"Now, I'm nobody particular--just a shrimper and momma--no education, no money, no clout. How can a nobody make these corporations quit dumping their poisons on us. If I stop to think on it, I'll know I'm a fool and go patch a shrimp net, quiet my mind in moving twine and fingers."

Molly Bang's picture book, NOBODY PARTICULAR: ONE WOMAN'S FIGHT TO SAVE THE BAYS is an astounding dual story--a powerful introduction to the complex competing demands upon the world's scarce fresh water supplies coupled with the jaw-dropping true story of Diane Wilson, a fourth-generation Texas shrimper who successfully took on multinational corporations and the EPA in order to protect the Texas bays from significantly increased toxic industrial discharges.

In the background of each two page spread, Molly Bang illustrates and discusses the prehistoric and historical development of, importance of, and mounting pressure upon the world's estuaries and fresh water supplies. As with her other environmentally related picture books, Molly Bang has a knack for portraying the interconnectedness of ecosystems and how they drastically affect and are affected by human beings. In the midst of each spread, in an overlying black and white graphic novel format, Bang simultaneously recounts how Diane Wilson discovered the bay pollution affecting her livelihood, learned of the plans by corporate polluters to expand their operations, and educated herself in order to fight the corporations and governmental bureaucrats.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring but fact-dense story .......2005-11-09

Teenagers looking for nonviolent heroes like Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, need only read this book to find one. Diane Wilson, a shrimp fisher in Texas, learns that chemical factories which provide many jobs are also poisoning the water, reducing her livelihood and affecting the community's health. She rapidly becomes a hero to environmentalists and an enemy to the companies and local government, and has to undertake a hunger strike to get the federal government to enforce its own laws. Black and white comic-style illustrations flesh out the story, with a background of full color paintings depicting the natural systems affected. Like a graphic novel or Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the World, the illustrations brim over with facts, which may overwhelm many readers. But those who persist will understand just how much willpower it takes to overcome environmental injustice.

In her private world, Katy would listen to the songs she loved and would be swept away to another place and time. The songs were reminders of the love that she felt for her family, of Brad and her hometown. Today, they still take her back, and she closes her eyes and lets the music take her away. She decided to lock away the memory of Brad in her heart…forever. What else could she do? She would probably never see him again.
