Book Description

"... [A] gem in the scientific literature".

Michael W. Pitcher, Science, 21 July 2006

International interest in nanoscience research has flourished in recent years, as it becomes an integral part in the development of future technologies. The diverse, interdisciplinary nature of nanoscience means effective communication between disciplines is pivotal in the successful utilization of the science.

Nanochemistry: A Chemical Approach to Nanomaterials is the first textbook for teaching nanochemistry and adopts an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to the subject. It presents a basic chemical strategy for making nanomaterials and describes some of the principles of materials self-assembly over 'all' scales. It demonstrates how nanometre and micrometre scale building blocks (with a wide range of shapes, compositions and surface functionalities) can be coerced through chemistry to organize spontaneously into unprecedented structures, which can serve as tailored functional materials. Suggestions of new ways to tackle research problems and speculations on how to think about assembling the future of nanotechnology are given.

Primarily designed for teaching, this book will appeal to graduate and advanced undergraduate students. It is well illustrated with graphical representations of the structure and form of nanomaterials and contains problem sets as well as other pedagogical features such as further reading, case studies and a comprehensive bibliography.

Geoffrey Ozin and André Arsenault are both based at the University of Toronto in Canada. Ozin has been the recipient of numerous awards and has made a huge contribution to teaching over the years, while his research work is widely published and recognised throughout the world.

Philip Ball, renowned science writer and 2005 winner of the Aventis Prize for Science, commented: "A text that covers all the basic concepts of nanoscale chemistry and materials science, and sets them in their historical context, has been long overdue. But here it is — not just a comprehensive guide to the field, but a recipe book for the future. Nanoengineers, start here!"

5 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about the chemistry of nanomaterials.......2006-01-22

Not for the faint of chemistry, "Nanochemistry: A Chemical Approach to Nanomaterials" by Geoffrey Ozin and Andre Arsenault explains the creation and function of materials with at least one dimension between one and 1000 nanometers. If you seek a light narrative about what nanotechnology will bring our world, Nanochemistry is not your book (and it's too heavy to read in bed anyway). If, on the other hand, you seek the scientific details of how nanomaterials really work, this is your textbook or reference.

Ironically, Nanochemistry opens with Einstein's famous quote, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." The book, however, is a testimony to imagination being built upon knowledge, as telegraphed by this early sentence: "The genesis of a creative idea, first and foremost, requires a knowledge bank of all classes of solids and how to make them." The table of contents covers the waterfront of material building blocks and self-assembly, stopping short of molecular manufacturing and molecular machine systems:

1. Nanochemistry basics
2. Chemical patterning and lithography
3. Layer-by-layer self-assembly
4. Nanocontact printing and writing - stamps and tips
5. Nanorod, nanotube, nanowire self-assembly
6. Nanocluster self-assembly
7. Microspheres - colors from the beaker
8. Microporous and mesoporous materials from soft building blocks
9. Self-assembling block copolymers
10. Biomaterials and bioinspiration
11. Self-assembly of large building blocks
12. Nano and beyond
13. Nanochemistry nanolabs

The introductory chapter is playful in setting the stage, using a sketch of a radiolarian and a photograph of Gaudi's Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona to illustrate organic patterns. But this is a serious book designed for the serious student: Each chapter concludes with a list of questions ("Nanofood for Thought") that demand creative synthesis, not simply finding the answer in the chapter. In spite of the breadth of material, Nanochemistry covers it in detail, with ample illustrations and footnotes (averaging more than 100 footnotes per chapter). The authors' claim that "the book should be useful to a broad readership" is a bit optimistic, given the familiarity with chemistry it demands, but Nanochemistry will certainly be quite useful to those who wish to understand how to synthesize nanoscale materials and structures.

I am the Director of Education for the Foresight Nanotech Institute and the author of Technology Challenged: Understanding Our Creations & Choosing Our Future.

    Book Description

Over the past 20 years the costs of natural disasters have escalated significantly. The lives of over 800 million people have been disrupted and the number of catastrophes has nearly quadrupled. At present, the increasing global threat of natural disasters, in spite of our increased knowledge, is ominous. With the growth in world population, the increasing of resources in newly developing areas, and the increasing cost and sophistication of engineering structures and technical installations, there is an urgent need to seek to understand the potential threats posed by natural hazards and to ascertain the best ways of mitigating their damaging effects.
To meet this urgent threat, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in December 22, 1989 passed a Resolution which declared the 1990s to be the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). As a contribution to the decade, the International Symposium Hazards--91 was held in Perugia, Italy, during 4--9 August 1991. The conference was attended by specialists from 34 countries, and a total of 110 papers were presented at 20 sessions, covering a very broad range of topics which proved to be of significant value for future research. The sixteen articles included in this book provide a unique overview of the state-of-the-science in geophysical hazards including climatic, atmospheric, hydrological and geological hazards. Furthermore, the results of a panel on the IDNDR and the recommendations adopted during the meeting are presented at the end of this volume. Recent Studies in Geophysical Hazards is thus an excellent reference source for scientists, engineers, and policy makers.

                Book Description

This text is designed for a two-semester introductory course in statistics for students majoring in engineering or any of the physical sciences. Inevitably, once these students graduate and are employed, they will be involved in the collection and analysis of data and will be required to think critically about the results. Consequently, they need to acquire knowledge of the basic concepts of data description and statistical inference and familiarity with statistical methods they are required to use on the job.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-11-20

Good book to learn from if you have the required background. As both a mathematician and a meteorologist, I plan on using this book a lot!

5 out of 5 stars Good for intuition.......2002-05-14

I think this book is very good for grasping the concepts and intuition behind the mathematical formalisms. Perhaps it should be used with another more theoretical book (Meyer, for instance). It is useful not only for engineering students.

3 out of 5 stars Good book without the unnecessary confusion added.......1997-06-02

The author adds unnecessary confusion by ignoring variable naming conventions. In some places he uses "y" as the independent variable name, while in other places, he uses "x". I have never seen f(y) on the vertical axes but yet the author uses P(y) on the vertical axes. It seems the only equation he got correct, according to convention, was the historical y=mx+b. This book should be dreastically updated to conform to standard variable naming conventions. After eliminating the variable naming confusion, I think this book will be an excellent book to read and learn

                  Book Description

This fifth edition of a successful textbook continues to provide students with an introduction to the basic principles of materials science over a broad range of topics. The authors have revised and updated this edition to include many new applications and recently developed materials. The book is presented in three parts. The first section discusses the physics, chemistry, and internal structure of materials. The second part examines the mechanical properties of materials and their application in engineering situations. The final section presents the electromagnetic properties of materials and their application. Each chapter begins with an outline of the relevance of its topics and ends with problems that require an understanding of the theory and some reasoning ability to resolve. These are followed by self-assessment questions, which test students' understanding of the principles of materials science and are designed to quickly cover the subject area of the chapter. This edition of Materials Science for Engineers includes an expanded treatment of many materials, particulary polymers, foams, composites and functional materials. Of the latter, superconductors and magnetics have received greater coverage to account for the considerable development in these fields in recent years. New sections on liquid crystals, superalloys, and organic semiconductors have also been added to provide a comprehensive overview of the field of materials science.

2 out of 5 stars Tries hard, but missing some essentials.......2007-05-26

This book tries hard to be clear, providing summaries, a glossary, and boldfacing terminology. I surmise that this book is written for people with little to no background in chemistry, physics, or mechanics of materials, because few things are derived from first principles. For instance, the crystal structures (rock salt, zinc blende, cesium chloride, etc.) presented in Chapter 3 are...well...just "presented," without any plausible explanation for their occurrance. It was as if their sole presence was to memorize them, without basing them in any sort of first principles. Quickly do I grow bored from books such as these, and, worse yet, no concepts really sink in. It was not until I read the excellent Materials text written by Callister that I understood at least one theory as to why these specific structures occur (ionic charge and ionic radii), and the concepts sank in.

Sorry, Dr. Shackleford, but until I see things derived from first principles, they do not sink in for me. Perhaps, however, a person working in industry would better benefit from such a text. Since this book is titled, specifically, as "...for scientists and engineers," I unabashedly assign two stars to this book. If a later edition came out with better explanations and theories (as described above) I would be happy to read it and rescind this review.

                  4 out of 5 stars Chapter 3.......2003-09-01

Chapter 3, being the 2nd longest chapter, is full of plenty of valuable information. It is by no means a recreational reading material due to the wordy nature of the text. However, studied closely there is a bountiful amount of information on metal, ceramics and plastics at the atomic level. The author does a good job explaining the introductory material and could possible write another book entirely on this subject. Due to the wordy, technical nature, I will refrain from giving "two thumbs up" and only give 4 stars.

                  4 out of 5 stars Chapter 15.......2003-08-30

Chapter 15 of "Materials Science for Engineers" describes the physical properties of electrical behavior. This chapter does a good job of explaining the properties of conduction and resistance. It also explains why metals are good conductors and what actually happens in a semiconductor material. This textbook is good as a prerequisite text before starting the core studies in electrical engineering. It provides a good background to the phenomena of electrical behavior at the atomic level.

This chapter, as well as the other chapters involving electricity, deal with material properties and not the physics of electricity.

This chapter hints at the property of superconductivity. I still don't fully comprehend this topic after reading chapter 15, but there are numerous publications written about this concept alone.

                  4 out of 5 stars A decent book, Ch6 for example.......2003-08-21

Chapter 6 covers the topic of Mechanical Behavior in 6 sub-sections. These sections include the stress versus strain relationship (a.k.a. Young's Modulus), elastic and plastic deformation, hardness, creep and stress relaxation, and viscoelastic deformation.
Section one discusses Young's Modulus in relation to metals, ceramics and glasses, and polymers. In this sub-section, engineering stress/strain and the differences between elastic/plastic deformations are discussed, as well as yield strength and tensile strength. This section includes some nice reference tables, and describes the stress/strain curve in great detail.
Sections two and three discuss elastic and plastic deformations. In the latter section, the slip plane for crystalline solids is well covered with some interesting illustrations.
Section four discusses hardness tests, in particular, Rockwell hardness and Brinell hardness numbers.
Creep and stress relaxation are discussed in section five, and covers the dislocation climb in plastic deformation among other topics. I feel that a better explanation regarding the preexponential constant is needed in this section.
The last section deals with viscoelastic deformation, and discusses various topics such as the glass transition temperature, viscous deformation, and softening temperatures. Also of interest is the subject of tempered glass, which is discussed in some detail.
This chapter does well in describing the general terminology and includes several equations with a practical application through example problems. In my opinion, though, this chapter doesn't cover enough information to answer some of the end of chapter problems, but a little on-line research should yield the required information.

                  3 out of 5 stars Chapter 7 Review.......2003-08-12

Chapter 7 in this book is titled Thermal Behavior. This chapter discusses the fundamentals of thermal behavior. I think that the author has done a good job of discussing the basics of thermal behavior in materials. The author discusses heat capacity and thermal expansion, conductivity, and shock. While I believe that the reading is easy I think the setup of the charts and sample problems could use some work. The chapter text and the sample problems are hard to separate visually, while the charts could be larger and a bit more colorful.

                  Book Description

Govannons people, a.k.a. TQ, have always had the knack of transmigrating from There to Here. But then the timeline hiccuped, stranding the entire species between dimensions, neither Here nor There.Meanwhile, one of Govannons human avatars seems to be in two places at once. Unless he and Karen solve this, Govannon may have to settle for a human life. With her usual stylistic flare, Bonanno takes the reader on a roller coaster ride through the Mobius strip of time.

                  4 out of 5 stars Funny story within-a-story. Saving the someone's world.......2002-12-09

Science Fiction writer Karen Rohmer Guerreri has been through a lot, but now she's got to write herself out of the death of an entire planet. Of the entire species of TQ (third kind alien), only her sometimes-lover Govannon remains--and he only sort of. He's counting on her to write her way to a solution for him and all of his kind. Naturally Karen doesn't have a clue what to write, but the story of Anna, the woman who just might be Joseph Goebbels' illegitimate daughter, keeps coming into her mind. So, without computer, paper, or pen, Karen writes the story. Naturally there are plenty of moments for her to back off and try to sort out where she is in her own life and to sort out the memories that belong to other people and species entirely but that seem to lodge in her mind without much of an invitation.

Neo-nazis have decided that Goebbels was truly the spiritual head of the Third Reich, and that his daughter is the best person to pick up the pieces and create a new German nation. That she's married to a Jew doesn't matter--he can quietly fade into the background. That she just might know the secret to the fabled amber room--looted by the Nazis from Russia and then lost but possibly not destroyed--means that they can actually find the financing for their dream. What Anna wants doesn't matter to them and she is drawn into their plot.

PRETERNATURAL3 is a funny and witty book. Readers who are familiar with the world or writing and the endangered midlist author will share in-group laughs with author Margaret Wander Bonanno and her alter ego Karen. Anna's adventure, and the over-adventure of the hoped for restoral of Govannon's race are compelling enough to keep the reader entertained, but the real justification for this novel is Bonanno's quirky view of the world and her insights into human nature, writing, and time. PRETERNATURAL3 will definitely repay the reader's time in smiles and outright laughs. But just how did she get the novel published through your standard New York editor?

5 out of 5 stars wild science fiction.......2002-09-06

Apparently, Govannon's race's effortlessly traveling through the gats of time ends when a hiccup occurs that leaves the alien people stranded in a void between dimensions. Govannon may be the last of the Mohegans unless he can patch up the flaw in the timeline. He is also stranded and forced to don a human form, which obviously equates to death or marriage and taxes. His human friend Karen, whom he met while Julius Caesar ruled, knows she must save Govannon from either odious fate.

Karen visits Govannon's home planet Relic though he cannot do so for some unknown reason. She enters the Museum, an edifice that contains the history of Govannon's race, in order to create the story of Govannon and his travels. Her theory is that everything will return to normal (whatever that disgustingly is) when Govannon re-finds his alien self once she writes up his memoirs.

As with the first two PRETERNATURAL novels, 3 is a wild science fiction ride that tears into anything and everything that gets in its path. The plot contains multiple story line to include that described above and a Neo-Nazi kidnapping that Margaret Wander Bonanno blends together while acerbically satirizing the universe, ironically including the publishing world being a road kill victim too. Margaret Wander Bonanno takes HG Wells and turns him upside down, in and out, and around. No one does time travel quite as zany and entertainingly as this author does proving that great things obviously comes in threes.
