5 out of 5 stars A really neat book!!.......2000-10-06

P.W Atkinks is one of the most respected authors in the field of chemistry textbooks. He has a rare talent of explaing complicated subjects like physical chemistry and molecular quantum mechanics in a way students can understand. This book is different however. In its pages you will find picture of common and not so common molecules followed by a 1-2 page description of this molecule (where it is found, some history, its significance). I read this book when I was a seventh grader (8-9 years later I am a senior chemistry major)and absolutely loved it. It won't bog you down with confusing technical details but rather will stimulate your curiosity. The ultimate molecular museum!

5 out of 5 stars Explains the basics of chemistry better than anyone else.......1999-10-26

An easy read (a bright sixth grader should be able to handle it) that gives a better understanding how chemicals work than a year of honors college chemistry.

3 out of 5 stars Acceptable First Year College Chemistry Book.......2004-06-05

Hey, it's just a first year college chemisty textbook for use in the USA. As a microbial biochemistry professor, I see it to be perfectly OK from a beginning chemistry perspective. Some will like it, some will not. Introductory chemistry is just difficult for some people, no matter what text they use, or how skilled or unskilled the professors appear to be. One has to work at it. This text is not meant to be an upper level text as the misguided, rather strident, and seemingly arrogant review from Rome might have you believe (considering the inappropriate and misdirected review comments) --- but this is the same reviewer who somewhat viciously and, in the same manner, mistakenly criticized the rather excellent, introductory-level, general microbiology textbook --- Brock: Biology of Microorganisms. Jones and Atkins is a general, first year, introductory textbook and a useful as any. Nothing more, nothing less --- . In the USA, most students don't have the luxury of choosing their primary class texts anyway. Those who do can always look to the reviews of other gen chem texts, but I'd be very careful and consider the appropriateness of some of the reviews.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a good book.......2004-03-31

I am a college student, and I have finished all 3 quarters series of chemistry using this book. I have recieved all A's in this chemistry series, and I have learned nothing from this book. Please ignored all the comments from high school teachers until they pass qualification exams because some high school teachers are affraid of taking national standard qualification exam proposed by President Bush. If highschool teachers can not pass chemistry exam, how do you expect your kid to learn anything. Why this book is so bad? After one year of reading and doing homeworks from this book, I can give you some example:
1. Instead of drawing wired molecular diagram (Tetrahedral) like normal text book, this author drew bunch of balls stick together.
2. In electrical-chemical chemistry (making cell battery), there is a listing for all chemical elements, but the author "forget" to tell you how to use it, which element for which electrode.
3. For weak acid and base reaction, the author wrote four chapters on this topic without giving out any essential informations. (I am not buying the explaination that there is so much informations that he can not put everything in it.) I think he should scrap all four chapters. He should classify this topic into 4 or 5 different scenerio. Then, he should give couple of homework problems that cover all 4 cases. If he is good, he can put all four cases into one homework problem. By the way, his homework problems are so mickey mouse - designed for grade school kids.
4. For Organic chemistry, it kinda ok, but it really has no value. (O'chem is pretty tricky. I have finished them all too.)
Summary: If you use this book to pass your high school qualification exam proposed by President Bush or you use this book to get all A in your College or University, then put your comment up here. Otherwise, don't.

4 out of 5 stars Good for its target audience.......2004-03-02

This is a general chemistry textbook written for US college level introductory chemistry for science majors, not for students with better background from other countries or chemistry professors. It is well written and especially good at teaching students how to solve problems on homeworks and exams. Whether this will translate into abilities to solve real-world problems is another story. A text that can show the beauty of chemistry and how different areas of chemistry fit together would be wonderful. However, most US college students are not ready for that yet, at least at freshman level. For a text like that, you might have to consult, for example, Principle of Physical Chemistry by Kuhn, which is a text for upper level chemistry students.

Some more recent and more positive reviews of this text are strangely under the older edition of this text (General Chemistry by Atkins and Beran).

5 out of 5 stars So many hours I have struggled.........2000-08-16

I am in sweden - in a local university liberary - They had just bought in the book - And I am sitting here chocked about it. This is exacly what I wanted - exacly I realy can't say anything more than I have struggled for years with this subject - and now finaly I can see that the clowds disapears Its a real pleashure to have this book in my palms - And I beleave that the time will stand still for a while - VERY GOOD WORK!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for learning chemistry.......2000-05-19

I am an instructor who has learned to be skeptical of general chemistry textbooks, so this book was a pleasant surprise. Jones and Atkins have a terrific art program, but more than that, the art is creatively designed and tied to the text. The result in my experience is deeper student understanding. The problem-solving support is extensive. It has to be seen---and used---to be appreciated.

This is by far the best general chemistry textbook I have ever seen if you are interested in students really learning concepts. Instead of glossing over the concepts, the authors introduce a rationale for learning a topic, help students to visualize it, then show how concepts are connected to problem-solving in the toolboxes. Finally, the worked examples have explicit strategies for every problem, which helps students to understand what they are doing when working the problem. They can then test themselves on the self-tests.

The book has a large number of interesting case studies that some students really like, especially if they are majoring in another subject. My students also liked the summaries at the ends of the sections and the checklist at the ends of the chapters.

Book Description

In this new edition of the book that was called "the most beautiful chemistry book ever written," Peter Atkins reveals the molecules responsible for the experiences of our everyday life in fabrics, drugs, plastics, explosives, detergents, fragrances, tastes, and sex. Atkins gives a non-technical account of a range of aspects of the world around us, revealing unexpected connections and insight into how it can be understood in terms of the atoms and molecules from which it is built. This new edition has dozens of new molecules, new graphic presentations, and a more accessible account of the molecules themselves. Peter Atkins is SmithKline Beecham Fellow and Tutor in Physical Chemistry at Oxford University. Atkins' research includes the fields of theoretical chemistry, particularly magnetic resonance and the electromagnetic properties of molecules. He spends virtually all his time writing books, which range from bestselling college textbooks to books on science for general audiences, including Galileo's Finger (Oxford, 2003); The Periodic Kingdom (Basic Books, 1997); The Second Law (W.H. Freeman, 1995); and Atoms, Electrons, and Change (W.H. Freeman, 1991). Previous Edition Paperback (W.H. Freeman, 1995) 0-7167-2928-8

The reading provide "chemical culture" for teachers and students.
One can takes information in order to elaborate chemical and mathematical problems.
The quality of paper and pictures is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Explores the molecule nature of life.......2004-02-06

This is a popular book on organic chemistry, a celebrated one at that, this being the second edition, substantially revised. The first was published in 1987. It is one of those almost legendary books of the publishing history, a technical book on a highly technical subject that somehow managed to reach something close to a large readership.

Ironically, the reason is not so much in the drawings of the molecules, but in the text. Peter Atkins covers a wide range of interesting molecules and shows how they are related, and he makes their properties semi-accessible to the general reader. I say, "semi" because, frankly for this chemistry-challenged person, seeing two-dimensional shapes of the molecules helps me to understand them only slightly. I suspect for those more conversant with chemistry, the drawings (new for this edition) will be valuable. To me, the mystery of why a certain shape and elemental composition should result in a nutritious substance whereas something else with only the slightest change should be poisonous is not dispelled.

He begins with "Simple substances," oxygen molecules, nitrogen, our air and its pollutants. He ends with the very complex DNA and RNA. Along the way he enlightens us about so many of the chemicals and foods and consumer products we use in our daily lives from soaps and gasoline to fats and oils, to painkillers and street drugs. His style is very readable and he has the welcome knack of being informative about interesting things. Here are some examples:

Baking power releases carbon dioxide to leaven baked goods in two separate bursts. "The first burst occurs at room temperature as a result of the action of the moistened tartaric acid...The second...is due to the action of the aluminum salt, and it occurs at high temperature." (p. 24)

One of the differences between synthetic and natural vanilla (vanillin) is that the natural is "weakly radioactive," the former having been made from coal tar, "from which the radioactivity has long decayed," while the latter picks up some radioactive carbon-14 atoms captured from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. (p. 154) (Of course natural vanilla is also more expensive.)

Lemons originally came from northern India and were introduced into the Mediterranean region about a thousand years ago. (p. 155)

"Initially, a young white wine may have a greenish hue from the chlorophyll...molecules that survive fermentation." (p. 176)

Window glass allows UV-A rays to pass through but blocks UV-B rays. (p. 180) I had always wondered about this because I had gotten conflicting information from different sources.

There's a Glossary and many full color illustrations and photos on glossy paper in addition to the color-coded drawings of the molecules, some of which are very beautiful. There's an Introduction in which Atkins explains the difference between elements and molecules, between atoms and compounds, and differentiates between the bonds between atoms and the forces that hold molecules together.

5 out of 5 stars Great organic chemistry book.......2003-11-22

P.W. Atkins's Molecules is probably one of the best general interest books written about organic chemistry. The 2nd edition is much expanded from the 1st, with more molecules and a much slicker presentation. Though the book is written for non-chemists, it's also useful for people in the field, who perhaps know the chemistry, but not the applications (if you walk into any chemist's office, look at his or her bookshelves, and can find a general interest book, chances are it's this one). Maybe the only thing bad I can say about the 2nd edition is that, unlike the 1st edition, it doesn't include the molecular line structures that organic chemists normally use, opting instead for the more colorful, but less useful, RasMol depictions.

1 out of 5 stars Never buy an Atkins Book.......2003-11-05

Dr. Atkins, I use Dr. loosely, should stop writing books. He assume the reader knows to much. Also, Dr. Atkins should stay in his own realm of chemistry, Physical chemistry and not try to intrude into other areas. Avoid this book like the plague. Atkins writes only to write them and get a fat check. The content is sub-par.

5 out of 5 stars A Chemistry Teacher for AP & IB with 12 years experience.......2004-07-20

First, CHLORIC ACID is one of the 7 strong acids and is near 100% soluble... it is HClO3...So it does NOT have an acid dissociation constant value since it dissolves (IS SOLUBLE) near 100%. No other comment is necessary for that. This text is an outstanding textbook for the Standard Level Chemistry IB program or the first year ONLY of a 2 year HL or AP Chemistry program. This is NOT a college level text but is outstanding for explaining the basics in a succinct, clear manner. Use the toolboxes and do the extra problems. As it is NOT a college level text it is simply inappropriate to rely on this book alone in preparing for an AP or HL Chemistry exam. See Steven Zumdahl's Chemistry 5th edition for THAT preparation during year 2.

1 out of 5 stars You'll flunk your chemistry course for sure..........1999-04-06

I must agree with the previous 2 reader. Not a good book. It did cover the basic, but did not go far enough to help you to pass your exam. (I did get A by using other references.) Ex: 4 lines to describe how to do redox reaction. Poorly describe how to draw molecular structure.

I may be mistaken but i do not think there is such a thing as chloric acid....

THis text book contains a substancial amount of information and is presented in a straight foward manner, but some of the information is not correct. Chloric acid is NOT soluble!

              Book Description

This book provides a catalog of earthquakes that have occurred in Egypt, Arabia, the Red Sea region, and the surrounding areas of Libya, Sudan, and Ethiopia from the earliest times (184 BC) to the present day. By careful and intensive study of historical sources and a review of the instrumental data of this century, the authors describe each earthquake as fully as possible and analyze each in a geographical and historical context. They further scrutinize the completeness of the earthquake catalog over time and examine the range of sources and the problems associated with such historical records.

                Book Description

At forty–one, Lance Herndon is at the top of his game. A self–made millionaire, he is the owner of ACCESS, Inc., a thriving information systems consulting company. As a prominent member of Atlanta's young, wealthy, and powerful set, he is surrounded by black Atlanta's "beautiful people" whom he wines and dines with finesse. But when he fails to show up for work one day, friends and family start worrying. Their worry soon turns to horror when he is found murdered in his own home, his head smashed in –– in what appears to be either an act of jealous–fueled rage or a seedier sex crime. Now, with a laundry list of ex–wives and lovers, competitors, critics and admirers in hand, detectives must break through the city's upper crust to discover his killer.

Part investigative thriller, part social commentary in the tradition of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Redbone offers a truly intriguing story that channels insight into one of America's great metropolises.

Good true crime story. However, while reading did not know if I was reading a fiction, editorial, social commentary or biography. Suspensful but not well written. Entertaining but jumped around too much ... got more from the Court TV synopsis on the internet.

Wait until this book comes out in paperback. I purchased this book and it was not filled with a lot of details. I watched this case on Court TV and this book came no where close to the actual trial.

4 out of 5 stars interesting true crime book .......2007-03-21

While the 1996 Olympics placed Atlanta on a world stage, someone murdered forty-one years old ACCESS, Inc. computer consulting firm CEO Lance Herndon. Besides his once successful firm that was suffering from financial troubles, the victim was considered a star player amongst the affluent African-American jet set. Herndon was known to have quite the sexual appetite especially for "redbones" petite, light-skinned black women.

One of his redbones, Dionne Baugh, was convicted of killing him as the prosecution pointed out that she became outraged after they had sex because she learned he was not going to help her in court with a charge of trespassing at his home; so while he was sleeping, she killed him.

This is an interesting true crime book because of its close look at the power of affluent blacks in the New South. Thus the background and the victim come across three dimensional especially his sultan like behavior towards his harem. Though Herndon's convicted killer seems to nebulous except for her temper and court date motive, Ron Stodghill provides a solid entry that true crime readers will appreciate.

Although the book is fairly well written, it left too many unanswered questions. I got more information by reading the Court TV files. I agree with the previous reviewer, its not worth the price. Wait for the hardback.

                2 out of 5 stars book lover.......2007-03-16

I was a little disappointed with the writing style of this book. It reads like a newspaper article or court transcript. The character development was weak. There was so much more to the personalities involved, but he barely scratched the surface. We know very little about the upbringing of the murderer and very little about the victim, although the author seems to have had plenty of access to close family and friends. With the back-drop of Atlanta, Black class and priviledge, southern culture, etc., this could have been an amazing book! Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars Great Academic Book - A Must for Researchers.......2004-06-01

Marler's bbook focuses on the origin of the Redbone name, the
hearth-community in the Carolinas where they originated as a separate
people, their migration to Louisiana and their settlement in what was
then known as the Neutral Zone, the region bounded by the Sabine River
on the west and the Calcasieu River on the east that served as a buffer
between then Spanish Texas and French Louisiana. Because of the
near-anarchy that existed in the Neutral Zone, it quickly became a
dangerous place for the Redbone newcomers. Their violent past is
explored as is the culture that grew out of their decision to "colonize"
in various sections of Southwest Louisiana.

While his book does not answer all questions about Redbones-nor does it
document all their history and culture-it is a first step toward
reaching these goals. Dr. Brent Kennedy, author of THE MELUNGEONS:
RESURRECTION OF A PROUD PEOPLE, wrote the Foreword to the book and
described it (and one of Marler's earlier books, THE CHERRY WINCHE
COUNTRY) as "groundbreaking" works in understanding Redbone culture.

People of Redbone heritage have historically resented the name, knowing
only that it was used as a term of derision. In recent years, however,
they have begun to use it with the same pride that Acadians now view the
term Cajun. Redbones of Louisiana is the first comprehensive history of
these mystery people. It is written in a positive, sympathetic vein that

nevertheless does not sugarcoat any aspect of the history. It should be
of interest to anyone interested in local history and the genealogy of
                        Redbones. The book is well documented and written in a scholarly manner;
yet, is very readable. As one having ties to the Redbone community I
                        found the book extremely helpful.
