5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2007-03-11

This book was a very good purchasing, because it gives me the main infomation about biomolecules, metabolism and biochemistry deseases. I don't want to be expert in biochemistry, I am studying medicine and I just want to be a doctor that has a good biochemistry knowledge with a clinical approach. This book gives me what I want...
Besides, the book makes be easier to learn biochemistry...

5 out of 5 stars Good Clinical Correlations .......2007-03-03

The whole point of going to medical school is to be able to solve problems and apply basic scientific principles in solving those problems. This edition gives specific and memorable clinical cases that help one to remember and apply these priniciples in clinical practice. It also comes with a CD that is a great bonus. I heartily recommend this book to help explain and use the basic medical biochemistry principles. It starts with a look at the metabolic and nutritional needs of the human body, relevent to anyone, and a great place to start, whereas many other books like, Lehninger, start out with chemical theory. This makes Marks much more relevent to the medical student and much more interesting. I recommend this book for your library and practical use. Use Lehninger to keep the door open, and read Marks to feed your brain.

5 out of 5 stars Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach.......2007-01-20

An excellent clinically based medical biochemistry book. Good examples of realistic cases.

2 out of 5 stars It makes a decent doorstop.......2006-11-05

I'll be honest, I love Biochemistry and I have tried several different books but I always go back to Voet. It may be a little deep in detail for the medical community but it gives a much more clear and concise overview than this book. I gave it two stars because it does serve as an excellent doorstop.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for MS1s w/o Biochem Background.......2006-08-27

I got this book for a medical biochemistry course I took prior to entering medical school to fulfill my undergraduate degree requirements. The book then was amazing. It's explanations were easy to understand, the figures weren't confusing, and the clinical correlations helped out tremendously. When I did enter medical school, I cracked open the book again to see if it would help with the level we were at there. It did! It seems to have a good balance in teaching the concept and integrating the deep minutia. I absolutely love this book. Whenever stuff gets a little confusing at school, I go home and read it and it clears it all up. This book comes highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A Cleverly Designed Book.......2004-05-22

Some biochemistry books proceed to describe metabolic pathways with scant reference to the physiological context in which they occur and then fill the conceptual gap by including a chapter on regulation and integration of metabolism. Not this thoughtful and cleverly designed book. From the start the authors make it clear that they are going to tell us the story in terms of one crucial unifying concept: which pathways are activated or inactivated when we eat or when we fast?

With this approach the reader never loses sight of the big picture, ie, what's going on in the body at any particular time. And then, when we do reach the chapter on integration of metabolism, most of the work has already been done for us: the chapter then operates as a useful review of what we have already been told.

The book does not miss any opportunity to make us think in terms of the big picture, and furthermore, it is never afraid of saying something more than once if it needs to. Just one example to illustrate this point: Lipoprotein lipase. Action and properties of this enzyme are detailed in the context of digestion of chylomicrons (p 497), storage of TAGs in adipocytes (p 512), integration of metabolism (p 561) and the influence of insulin levels on gene expression of the enzyme (p 564).

The early introduction of the fed and starved states is also useful in other ways. The student perceives right away what the point is of learning those endless metabolic pathways and studies them with much more enthusiasm and not just thinking that biochemistry is but an unnecessary obstacle they have to overcome to get to the more clinical stuff (at least I'd like to think so!). Inspired by this book I have organized my course in that way and I am convinced that it is the best approach.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Lucid, yet encylopedic.......2003-08-23

This book is different from its contemporaries in many ways. First of all is written in a clinical approach format which is very interesting for medical students. Most of the biochemistry textbooks are dry and vast and difficult to grasp the information needed for a medico.
But the Marks helps to learn to use biochemistry in the process of Clinical Problem Solving. With a lot of diagrams and clear text it is easy understand.
The Clinical Material is presented in the form of real patients.
It is a student friendly text with which you can learn biochemistry in a funny way of solving the clinical cases.
It can be used as a main textbook for self study.
I strongly recommend the Marks for all medical students.

3 out of 5 stars Not Pretty Good for USMLE.......2002-05-21

Texts are not easily to follow. Diagrams and help notes scatters around pages which make readers confused. If you are preparing for Step 1, I recommend you study Lippincott Biochemistry, Board Review Series.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best biochemistry book (easy and comprehensive).......2001-10-19

I love this book on biochemistry simply because it was the easiest to read, with diagrams and pictures even dumb people like me can read (gg). I also found that it is very comprehensive also. Some of the other titles I've read on the subject (Lippincott, Harper's) did not go into the detail of this one. Another positive note is that this is a clinical book also; giving you case studies in each chapter to test your knowledge. I can't say enough about this book and even referred it to one of my friends. Although not required in Chiropractic College (Lippincott was), it should have been the standard.

I am basically a newbie in this area and was hoping to learn the basics of using microarrays for sequencing and expression analysis. While it was somewhat helpful for me, I think that it is aimed at a more expert audience already well versed in molecular biology techniques. I found the documentation and other info on the Affymetrix site to be more comprehensive and explanatory.

          Book Description

An understanding of random processes is crucial to many engineering fields-including communication theory, computer vision, and digital signal processing in electrical and computer engineering, and vibrational theory and stress analysis in mechanical engineering. The filtering, estimation, and detection of random processes in noisy environments are critical tasks necessary in the analysis and design of new communications systems and useful signal processing algorithms. Random Processes: Filtering, Estimation, and Detection clearly explains the basics of probability and random processes and details modern detection and estimation theory to accomplish these tasks.
In this book, Lonnie Ludeman, an award-winning authority in digital signal processing, joins the fundamentals of random processes with the standard techniques of linear and nonlinear systems analysis and hypothesis testing to give signal estimation techniques, specify optimum estimation procedures, provide optimum decision rules for classification purposes, and describe performance evaluation definitions and procedures for the resulting methods. The text covers four main, interrelated topics:
          * Probability and characterizations of random variables and random processes
          * Linear and nonlinear systems with random excitations
          * Optimum estimation theory including both the Wiener and Kalman Filters
          * Detection theory for both discrete and continuous time measurements
Lucid, thorough, and well-stocked with numerous examples and practice problems that emphasize the concepts discussed, Random Processes: Filtering, Estimation, and Detection is an understandable and useful text ideal as both a self-study guide for professionals in the field and as a core text for graduate students.

            Book Description

Individual donors play a critical role in financing congressional elections, accounting for more than half of all money raised in House campaigns. But significant donors (defined here as those contributing more than $200) are the least understood participants in the system. Defenders assert that contributing money to campaigns is part of a broader pattern of civic involvement and is free speech that gives a voice to various interests. Detractors argue that these contributions are undemocratic, enabling wealthy citizens to overwhelm the voices of the many and to promote narrow business and policy interests. These divergent assessments were raised in connection with the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002 and continue to characterize the debate over campaign finance reform.

So who really contributes and why? How much and to how many candidates? What are the strategies used by political campaigns to elicit contributions and how do the views of significant donors impact the campaign-finance system? What do donors think about campaign-finance reform? This book investigates these vital questions, describing the influence of congressional financiers in American politics.

This book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in elections and democratic governance. There has been much talk about the role of money in elections and the impact of campaign contributions on how politicians govern. But rarely do we hear about the people behind the money. Who are they? Why do they give? To whom do they give? How much access do they have to members of Congress? These questions are answered in this well-written and well-researched book.

His grandfather could have used a company like All Care, and he's worried his Nana Hazel will need one in the future. by DonnaJ

Raye Franklin wants to start her own business All Care Home Health and she's been looking for a financial investor for the last six months. Macon Winston agrees to be that investor if she'll agree to his terms, him being the office manager. They are attracted to each other but decide business and pleasure do not mix, so fighting these feelings she agrees and so starts the fun of watching two people fight for all they're worth all the way to the end.

In walks competition, in the form of Dr. Cary Childress and Myrna Winston. Raye seeks the doctor out to get patient referrals but Macon doesn't like the idea that she is to have dinner with him at his house and forbids her to go. Macon is discussing the selling of his property in Texas to Myrna his ex-wife, but Raye doesn't know this and thinks they are reconciling, so she turns cold towards Macon.

The opening scene gets to you right off, you just have to read the rest to see the road these two are going to travel: "Ah, perfect jeans. Raye licked her lips. Perfect jeans were hard to wear out no matter how long the ride, promised to fit better over time and hugged in all the right places. And a perfect pair of 505's was walking toward her this minute." She hopes he isn't Mr. Winston, but of course her wish doesn't come true.

The scene I love best is after Raye has stayed home from work pretending to be sick and Macon has lost the vote with the staff to be the one to go check on her. He's informed her that he knows the real reason she stayed home, her pride. As he's backed her over to the couch and out of her clothes, he asks her if she's still a virgin, she nods and he kisses her softly and her feet begin to sweat. She has to hold back from giggling because the thought entered her head that "if she got any wetter, even Bounty wouldn't be the quicker-picker-upper." As I was reading this I started laughing out loud picturing the scene in my head.

This is just an example of how well these two authors are at getting the reader involved with not only the two main characters but the secondaries as well.
