Book Description
This completely updated and revised Second Edition of the popular Workbook of Atmospheric Dispersion Estimates provides an important foundation for understanding dispersion modeling as it is being practiced today. The book and accompanying diskette will help you determine the impacts of various sources of air pollution, including the effects of wind and turbulence, plume rise, and Gaussian dispersion and its limitations. Information is shown in summary graphs as well as in equations. The programs included on the diskette allow you to "get the feel" for the results you'll obtain through the input of various combinations of parameter values. The sensitivity of data to various parameters can be easily explored by changing one value and seeing the effect on the results. The book presents 37 example problems with solutions to show the estimation of atmospheric pollutant concentrations for many situations.

bible of dispersion.......2001-06-20
I am reading 1969 version of this book. I have borrowed this book from a Professor. It is a good stariting point for the formulation basics in dispersion. Up to now I had seen the names of Gaussian type, had never faced with the formulations. Thanks to Bruce Turner

Book Description
This book contains the 100 papers presented at the Fifth International Conference on Air Pollution, which was held in Bologna, Italy, September 16-18, 1997. The papers were written by scientists working in industry, research organizations, government and academia who are involved with monitoring, simulation and management of air pollution problems.
The volume presents advances on monitoring, modeling, management and understanding of air pollution problems. Particular attention is given to developments in computational and experimental techniques, as well as to health problems. These techniques can be used as a tool for solving and understanding practical air pollution problems, from which it is possible to assess proposed emission control techniques and strategies. Mathematically and computationally based theoretical works and case studies compared to modeling results are presented and discussed.
Book Description
This book contains most of the papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on the Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution. Emphasis is placed on the development of experimental and computational techniques, which can be used as tools to aid the solution and understanding of practical air pollution problems, and on topics related to health effects, such as studies of aerosols and particles.
Eighty state-of-the-art contributions from researchers working around the world are featured. These are divided under the following headings: Air Pollution Modelling; Air Quality Management; Global and Regional Studies; Emission Inventories; Monitoring and Laboratory Studies; Use and Usability of Remote Sensing in Air Pollution Monitoring; Comparison of Modelling with Experiments; Aerosols and Particles; Urban Air Pollution; and Urban and Suburban Transport Emissions.
Book Description
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are harmful to human health and to the environment. Their fate in the marine environment is not yet fully understood. An ocean model (FANTOM) has been developed to investigate the fate of selected POPs in the North Sea. The main focus of the model is on quantifying the distribution of POPs and their aquatic pathways. This is the first time that a spatially-resolved, measurement-based ocean transport model has been used to study POP-like substances, at least on the regional scale. The model was applied for the southern North Sea and tested by studying the behaviour of g-HCH, a-HCH and PCB 153 in sea water. This model study proves that transport models, such as FANTOM, are capable of reproducing realistic multi-year temporal and spatial trends of selected POPs and can be used to address further scientific questions.

Book Description
Written by scientists and researchers at the leading edge of air quality modeling and monitoring, this book covers topics in both observational and simulation data.
The book fills an important gap in the literature on environmental sciences, the integration of modeling research and environmental monitoring techniques. Both areas have developed independently, with specialists existing in both monitoring and modeling, but there has been very little or no interaction between them.
This book focuses on the need for an integrated approach to environmental science research and presents arguments for linking monitoring and modeling in order to understand the complex interdisciplinary environmental goals that are challenging mankind.

Description:
The European Zooming Model (EZM) is applied to simulate the wind flow and the pollutant transport and transformation in the Greater Thessaloniki area (GTA) during a day characterised by weak synoptic forcing and a pronounced sea breeze circulation. Two chemical reaction mechanisms of different complexities, KOREM and EMEP, are used for these simulations. The evolution of the wind field and particularly the development of the sea/land breeze flow are investigated in relation to ozone concentration patterns. Comparison of model results to observations at a large number of locations showed the considerable skill of the model in predicting the major mesoscale features affecting the GTA: the sea breeze onset time and development, its inland penetration as well as its intensity. According to both observations and model results, ozone levels are kept at moderate levels. They are decisively affected by the break-up of the night-time inversion and the onset of the sea breeze. The compact mechanism KOREM is very sensitive to the VOC/NO"x emission ratio. When this ratio is close to unity, i.e. inside urban areas, KOREM performs very well proving its appropriateness for regulatory use in such environments. The more sophisticated EMEP mechanism underestimates urban ozone levels but performs very well in rural areas remaining the most reliable choice for regional scale applications.

Description:
In Part I of this paper, the European Zooming Model (EZM) was applied to simulate the wind flow and the pollutant transport and transformation in the Greater Thessaloniki area (GTA) during a day in the midst of the Thessaloniki '91 Field Measurement Campaign. A quantitative evaluation of the model's performance is presented here, in Part II. Results of the wind flow and photochemical simulations are compared against observations with the use of appropriate statistical performance measures. Emphasis is given on the intercomparison of the two chemical reaction mechanisms utilized, the compact mechanism KOREM and the more sophisticated mechanism EMEP. High performance evaluation scores are reached regarding wind flow predictions in both coarse and fine grid results. Discrepancies noted mainly in the wind direction are rather difficult to improve as they are attributed to sub-grid variations or to random stochastic fluctuations, which are quite important in light wind situations like the present one. Concerning the photochemical simulations, the statistical evaluation quantified the differences in the performance of the two chemical mechanisms already noted in Part I: Overall, KOREM attains higher scores than EMEP, due to its better performance at the urban sites. EMEP, however, performs better at rural locations and proves its credibility for regional scale simulations.

Book Description
On January 3, 1977, Howell Township, New Jersey closed its schools while scientists tested for dangerous levels of asbestos. After reports of unexplained ailments in some children, the parents of 4,500 elementary school children had threatened to boycott classes until the Board of Education removed asbestos-containing materials. Similar cases occurred across the country. In February, 1977, the New York Times reported that the child whose illness had been attributed to asbestos actually had mononucleosis. Was the reaction of parents and officials unwarranted? Did scientific evidence exist indicating that asbestos in schools caused children to become ill? Was all the relevant information - including the impact of their decisions on public policy in the future - considered? Environmental Public Health Policy for Asbestos in Schools addresses these questions by focusing on the development, institutionalization, and consequences of federal environmental policy for asbestos in schools. This unique and timely book explores the history of asbestos in schools and buildings and how this issue shaped the development of public health policy. Insight into past policy, including how, why, and who caused action to be taken, will enlighten and guide the scientific and regulatory communities in the future. The story of asbestos is a cautionary tale. Other toxic agents, such as lead, nitrogen dioxide and radon, could follow the same model as asbestos, raising similar questions. Written in a straightforward style, Environmental Public Health Policy for Asbestos in Schools explains technical concepts in language easily understood by non-experts. Understanding the factors and judgments involved in this issue gives insight into how the government - and society - perceives, assesses, and develops public health policy.
