Theoretical Geochemistry: Applications of Quantum Mechanics in the Earth and Mineral Sciences
John A. Tossell , and David J. Vaughan Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0195044037 |
Book Description
This work is based on the observation that further major advances in geochemistry, particularly in understanding the rules that govern the ways in which elements come together to form minerals and rocks, will require the application of the theories of quantum mechanics. The book therefore outlines this theoretical background and discusses the models used to describe bonding in geochemical systems. It is the first book to describe and critically review the application of quantum mechanical theories to minerals and geochemical systems. The book consolidates valuable findings from chemistry and materials science as well as mineralogy and geochemistry, and the presentation has relevance to professionals in a wide range of disciplines. Experimental techniques are surveyed, but the emphasis is on applying theoretical tools to various groups of minerals: the oxides, silicates, carbonates, borates, and sulfides. Other topics dealt with in depth include structure, stereochemistry, bond strengths and stabilities of minerals, various physical properties, and the overall geochemical distribution of the elements.

PHASE TRANSITIONS (Frontiers in Physics, 85)
Goldenfeld Manufacturer: Westview Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0201554097 |
Book Description
Covering the elementary aspects of the physics of phases transitions and the renormalization group, this popular book is widely used both for core graduate statistical mechanics courses as well as for more specialized courses. Emphasizing understanding and clarity rather than technical manipulation, these lectures de-mystify the subject and show precisely "how things work." Goldenfeld keeps in mind a reader who wants to understand why things are done, what the results are, and what in principle can go wrong. The book reaches both experimentalists and theorists, students and even active researchers, and assumes only a prior knowledge of statistical mechanics at the introductory graduate level. Advanced, never-before-printed topics on the applications of renormalization group far from equilibrium and to partial differential equations add to the uniqueness of this book.Customer Reviews:

Renormalization: An Introduction to Renormalization, the Renormalization Group and the Operator-Product Expansion (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)
John C. Collins Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521311772 |
Book Description
Most of the numerical predictions of experimental phenomena in particle physics over the last decade have been made possible by the discovery and exploitation of the simplifications that can happen when phenomena are investigated on short distance and time scales. This book provides a coherent exposition of the techniques underlying these calculations. After reminding the reader of some basic properties of field theories, examples are used to explain the problems to be treated. Then the technique of dimensional regularization and the renormalization group. Finally a number of key applications are treated, culminating in the treatment of deeply inelastic scattering.Customer Reviews:

Field Theory; The Renormalization Group and Critical Phenomena
Daniel J. Amit , and Victor Martin-mayor Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 9812561196 |
Product Description
This volume links field theory methods and concepts from particle physics with those in critical phenomena and statistical mechanics, the development starting from the latter point of view. Rigor and lengthy proofs are trimmed by using the phenomenological framework of graphs, power counting, etc., and field theoretic methods with emphasis on renormalization group techniques. Non-perturbative methods and numerical simulations are introduced in this new edition. Abundant references to research literature complement this matter-of-fact approach. The book introduces quantum field theory to those already grounded in the concepts of statistical mechanics and advanced quantum theory, with sufficient exercises in each chapter for use as a textbook in a one-semester graduate course.Customer Reviews:

Frontiers in Number Theory, Physics, and Geometry II: On Conformal Field Theories, Discrete Groups and Renormalization
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 3540303073 |
Book Description
The relation between mathematics and physics has a long history, in which the role of number theory and of other more abstract parts of mathematics has recently become more prominent.
More than ten years after a first meeting in 1989 between number theorists and physicists at the Centre de Physique des Houches, a second 2-week event focused on the broader interface of number theory, geometry, and physics.
This book is the result of that exciting meeting, and collects, in 2 volumes, extended versions of the lecture courses, followed by shorter texts on special topics, of eminent mathematicians and physicists.
The present volume has three parts: Conformal Field Theories, Discrete Groups, Renomalization.
The companion volume is subtitled: On Random Matrices, Zeta Functions and Dynamical Systems (Springer, 3-540-23189-7).

Book Description
The successful calculation of critical exponents for continuous phase transitions is one of the main achievements of theoretical physics over the last quarter-century. This was achieved through the use of scaling and field-theoretic techniques which have since become standard equipment in many areas of physics, especially quantum field theory. This book provides a thorough introduction to these techniques. Continuous phase transitions are introduced, then the necessary statistical mechanics is summarized, followed by standard models, some exact solutions and techniques for numerical simulations. The real-space renormalization group and mean-field theory are then explained and illustrated. The final chapters cover the Landau-Ginzburg model, from physical motivation, through diagrammatic perturbation theory and renormalization to the renormalization group and the calculation of critical exponents above and below the critical temperature.Customer Reviews:

Cyclic Renormalization and Automorphism Groups of Rooted Trees (Lecture Notes in Mathematics , Vol 1621)
Hyman Bass , M. V. Otero-Espinar , D. Rockmore , and C. Tresser Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540605959 |
Book Description
The theme of the monograph is an interplay between dynamical systems and group theory. The authors formalize and study "cyclic renormalization", a phenomenon which appears naturally for some interval dynamical systems. A possibly infinite hierarchy of such renormalizations is naturally represented by a rooted tree, together with a "spherically transitive" automorphism; the infinite case corresponds to maps with an invariant Cantor set, a class of particular interest for its relevance to the description of the transition to chaos and of the Mandelbrot set. The normal subgroup structure of the automorphism group of such "spherically homogeneous" rooted trees is investigated in some detail. This work will be of interest to researchers in both dynamical systems and group theory.

Fermionic Functional Integrals and the Renormalization Group
Joel S. Feldman , Horst Knorrer , and Eugene Trubowitz Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0821828789 |
Book Description
This book, written by well-known experts in the field, offers a concise summary of one of the latest and most significant developments in the theoretical analysis of quantum field theory. The renormalization group is the name given to a technique for analyzing the qualitative behavior of a class of physical systems by iterating a map on the vector space of interactions for the class. In a typical nonrigorous application of this technique, one assumes, based on one's physical intuition, that only a certain finite dimensional subspace (usually of dimension three or less) is important. The material in this book concerns a technique for justifying this approximation in a broad class of fermionic models used in condensed matter and high energy physics.
This volume is based on the Aisenstadt Lectures given by Joel Feldman at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques (Montréal, Canada). It is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in mathematical physics. Included are many problems and solutions.
