3 out of 5 stars Scant physical explanation........2001-04-20

Venables' text fairly thoroughly covers modern surface science techniques. He summarizes thirty years of fundamental research and hits on modern interest areas. However, for a text labeled as an introduction, very few introductory ideas are adequately explained. Where are the energy level diagrams? Energies associated with various processes are arbitrarily assigned to be positive or negative, and reference energies are never mentioned. Attempts to solve chapter ending problems invariably lead to frustration, as the questions are vague, and the suggested results are impossible to obtain without consulting other, more detailed texts like Dejenqueres and Spanjaard. The sections on crystal growth are impenetrable unless one reads the referenced papers, but this is inexcusable for an introductory text. A more suitable title for the book would be: "A Survey of Surface Science," or "Collected Citations of Surface Science Research: 1970-2000"

    Book Description

This work is based on the observation that further major advances in geochemistry, particularly in understanding the rules that govern the ways in which elements come together to form minerals and rocks, will require the application of the theories of quantum mechanics. The book therefore outlines this theoretical background and discusses the models used to describe bonding in geochemical systems. It is the first book to describe and critically review the application of quantum mechanical theories to minerals and geochemical systems. The book consolidates valuable findings from chemistry and materials science as well as mineralogy and geochemistry, and the presentation has relevance to professionals in a wide range of disciplines. Experimental techniques are surveyed, but the emphasis is on applying theoretical tools to various groups of minerals: the oxides, silicates, carbonates, borates, and sulfides. Other topics dealt with in depth include structure, stereochemistry, bond strengths and stabilities of minerals, various physical properties, and the overall geochemical distribution of the elements.

                      Book Description

Covering the elementary aspects of the physics of phases transitions and the renormalization group, this popular book is widely used both for core graduate statistical mechanics courses as well as for more specialized courses. Emphasizing understanding and clarity rather than technical manipulation, these lectures de-mystify the subject and show precisely "how things work." Goldenfeld keeps in mind a reader who wants to understand why things are done, what the results are, and what in principle can go wrong. The book reaches both experimentalists and theorists, students and even active researchers, and assumes only a prior knowledge of statistical mechanics at the introductory graduate level. Advanced, never-before-printed topics on the applications of renormalization group far from equilibrium and to partial differential equations add to the uniqueness of this book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to critical phenomena.......2007-03-19

This book stands clearly to me as the best one on the vast and fascinating subject of phase transitions, critical phenomena and the renormalization group. My other references are Binney et al., Le Bellac and Yeomans. Nigel Goldenfeld's course is the most suitable for a first contact with the field. It stresses in a exceptional way the ideas lying under each concept and has a gift for explaining what's really going on beyond the equations. This can most clearly be seen with his careful discussion of ergodicity and symmetry breaking.
Moreover, this book is remarkable in that it presents various openings on modern issues ; it includes an overview of disordered systems and a rather complete discussion of dynamical critical phenomena.
After reading this book, you'll probably be ready to fully appreciate the typical treaties on critical phenomena, which use more sharp technical tools but which require a good understanding of the associated physics you'll only find so beautifully presented in Nigel Goldenfeld's book.

                      5 out of 5 stars I could *become* a classic.......1999-11-17

As other reader has put, this is not a classic book, in that the main focus is renormalization group, which is certainly a very dynamic field. Nevertheless, the introduction and discusion of other topics I find very good, so time and time I come back to this book to read again about some other topic which is *not* the RG (ergodicity, the Ising model, dynamics...).

                      4 out of 5 stars Good Book -- but not a classic.......1999-05-15

"Lectures on Phase Transitions and the Renormalization Group" is a good text, and a wonderful place to learn about the remormalization group in terms of real physical systems many of which can be measured in your basement (as opposed to HEP which, unless your basement happens to include fermilab is out-of-reach). This book is not a classic, not because it is a poor book, but because this is a dynamical area of modern research.

                      Book Description

Most of the numerical predictions of experimental phenomena in particle physics over the last decade have been made possible by the discovery and exploitation of the simplifications that can happen when phenomena are investigated on short distance and time scales. This book provides a coherent exposition of the techniques underlying these calculations. After reminding the reader of some basic properties of field theories, examples are used to explain the problems to be treated. Then the technique of dimensional regularization and the renormalization group. Finally a number of key applications are treated, culminating in the treatment of deeply inelastic scattering.

It really shed light on some concepts that other books simply do not discuss. It is also the only one I know that gives a theoretical basis for understanding dimensional regularization.

                        Product Description

This volume links field theory methods and concepts from particle physics with those in critical phenomena and statistical mechanics, the development starting from the latter point of view. Rigor and lengthy proofs are trimmed by using the phenomenological framework of graphs, power counting, etc., and field theoretic methods with emphasis on renormalization group techniques. Non-perturbative methods and numerical simulations are introduced in this new edition. Abundant references to research literature complement this matter-of-fact approach. The book introduces quantum field theory to those already grounded in the concepts of statistical mechanics and advanced quantum theory, with sufficient exercises in each chapter for use as a textbook in a one-semester graduate course.

This book presents in a logical and consistent way the material that every budding condensed matter theorist should know on field theory before engaging in serious research.
Within the first seven chapters, the authors derive the key results in euclidian field theory and lay the basis for further developments in renormalization theory and critical phenomena. That part of the book is almost self-contained and could serve as an alternative to the traditionally particle-physics oriented field theory course.
Chapter 8 introduces properly the core concepts of any book on the subject, namely the renormalization group and critical phenomena. Once more, every technicalities are derived and no prior acquaintance to field theory is required (unlike in books like Itzykson & Drouffe two volumes). The major techniques, such as dimensional regularization, are nicely exposed. A salient point for using this course as a first introduction to quantum field theory would be that students would have a better feeling on the true meaning of renormalization and scale invariance than if those were presented in a particle physics context.
Part II of this book exposes more specialized topics. The Coleman-Weinberg phenomenon and critical behaviour with several coupling constants are well presented. Crossover phenomena, critical phenomena in two dimensions have their respective chapters, too.
Part III begins with real space renormalization methods ; here the presentation is a bit too formal, and returning to books like the one by Nigel Goldenfeld would improve the reader's appreciation of those methods.
The book ends with some numerical recipes used in statistical field theory. Sample programs can be downloaded on a dedicated webpage.
In short, an excellent, comprehensive, highly recommended textbook and reference work.

                          Book Description

The relation between mathematics and physics has a long history, in which the role of number theory and of other more abstract parts of mathematics has recently become more prominent.

More than ten years after a first meeting in 1989 between number theorists and physicists at the Centre de Physique des Houches, a second 2-week event focused on the broader interface of number theory, geometry, and physics.

This book is the result of that exciting meeting, and collects, in 2 volumes, extended versions of the lecture courses, followed by shorter texts on special topics, of eminent mathematicians and physicists.

The present volume has three parts: Conformal Field Theories, Discrete Groups, Renomalization.

The companion volume is subtitled: On Random Matrices, Zeta Functions and Dynamical Systems (Springer, 3-540-23189-7).

                          Book Description

The successful calculation of critical exponents for continuous phase transitions is one of the main achievements of theoretical physics over the last quarter-century. This was achieved through the use of scaling and field-theoretic techniques which have since become standard equipment in many areas of physics, especially quantum field theory. This book provides a thorough introduction to these techniques. Continuous phase transitions are introduced, then the necessary statistical mechanics is summarized, followed by standard models, some exact solutions and techniques for numerical simulations. The real-space renormalization group and mean-field theory are then explained and illustrated. The final chapters cover the Landau-Ginzburg model, from physical motivation, through diagrammatic perturbation theory and renormalization to the renormalization group and the calculation of critical exponents above and below the critical temperature.

This is a highly pedagogical book on the theory of critical phenomena and the renormalization group (RG). Field-theoretic methods are introduced gradually, and the physics is always illustrated with well-chosen examples. Technical details are explained thoroughlly and oftentimes summarized in ``boxes'' which span most of the book. At the end of every chapter, a set of problems allows the reader to test his/her understanding of the subject matter, and solutions to the problems are provided at the end of the book. Two regrets though: (i) that the authors did not touch at all the (less rigorous) but highly intuitive and widely used momentum shell renormalization group technique; and (ii) that the treatment of two-dimensional systems and the Kosterlitz thouless transition is a little superficial. Apart from that, this book is just great. A very useful book.

                            Book Description

The theme of the monograph is an interplay between dynamical systems and group theory. The authors formalize and study "cyclic renormalization", a phenomenon which appears naturally for some interval dynamical systems. A possibly infinite hierarchy of such renormalizations is naturally represented by a rooted tree, together with a "spherically transitive" automorphism; the infinite case corresponds to maps with an invariant Cantor set, a class of particular interest for its relevance to the description of the transition to chaos and of the Mandelbrot set. The normal subgroup structure of the automorphism group of such "spherically homogeneous" rooted trees is investigated in some detail. This work will be of interest to researchers in both dynamical systems and group theory.

                                  Book Description

This book, written by well-known experts in the field, offers a concise summary of one of the latest and most significant developments in the theoretical analysis of quantum field theory.

The renormalization group is the name given to a technique for analyzing the qualitative behavior of a class of physical systems by iterating a map on the vector space of interactions for the class. In a typical nonrigorous application of this technique, one assumes, based on one's physical intuition, that only a certain finite dimensional subspace (usually of dimension three or less) is important. The material in this book concerns a technique for justifying this approximation in a broad class of fermionic models used in condensed matter and high energy physics.

This volume is based on the Aisenstadt Lectures given by Joel Feldman at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques (Montréal, Canada). It is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in mathematical physics. Included are many problems and solutions.

Bill doesn't dream. Bill doesn't work. He doesn't feel he's destined for big things and can't seem to rise above the white-trash life he's created for himself. Booze, guns, sex and good times are all he knows. And now his girlfriend is two-timing him and he's about to lose half a leg. Things can only get worse.and they do. When Bill and his bar-fly friends stumble onto a conspiracy of drugs and murder, the battle between Good and Evil comes to Bingham Valley, and Bill finds himself in the middle of a crime scene that stretches through Time itself. The bodies pile up as he fumbles his way through a web of memories and realities that are constantly changing. Nothing is as it seems and the fate of the ten-dimensional universe may hinge on the ingredients of a sacred beer recipe. Funny, unsettling and perverse, combining elements of dark Christianity with modern cynicism, this true story may change the way you drink. Forever.

Fitkid7 is a great book on childhood fitness & health. It covers the issues of exercising, healthy eating and much much more.

I found it was easy to read (unlike a few others I've tried).

I love all the sections on Recipies, Shopping lists, meal ideas etc.

I would recommend FitKid7 to anyone looking for a book on kid's health. Your kids would love to read it just as I have.

Sirkka Wolke has done a great job on this one.****** 6 stars from me!
