Book Description
This text provides a pared-down but thorough approach that is perfectly suited to one-semester survey courses in general, organic, and biological chemistry. A visually striking, accessible design makes Essentials an engaging choice for both students and instructors.
Instructors find Stoker's pedagogical approachincluding problem sets and learning objectives for each section, as well as cumulative practice quizzes at the ends of chapterseasy to apply and use. The text develops chemical topics starting at the ground level. Complicated mathematics is minimized and used only when it helps clarify a topic.
- "Learning Focus" features start each section, providing a framework for study and motivating student learning.
- "Chemical Portraits" profile chemical elements in the periodic table and explain their importance in students' everyday lives, offering students challenging questions linked to resources on the student web site.
- "Chemistry at a Glance" sections provide brief summaries of core chapter concepts to help students visualize difficult material.
- "Margin Notes," distributed throughout the text, provide tips for remembering and distinguishing between concepts, highlight links across chapters, and describe interesting historical background.
- Section-ending "Practice Questions and Problems" reinforce ideas and focus students' attention on learning one concept.
- The art program visually communicates core concepts of general, organic, and biological chemistry and effectively distinguishes pedagogical features from one another.
- The text's focus on biochemistry is particularly helpful to the many students for whom this subject matter is highly applicable to their careers. The biochemistry chapters in the text were written first, with the general and organic chapters written after to support the biochemistry presentation.
- Chapter outlines highlight the most important material found in each chapter.
- In-text worked-out examples walk students through a problem-solving scenario. They are followed by "Practice Exercises" that reinforce the information presented in the examples.
- "Key Terms" and their definitions are highlighted in the text on first use. Each definition appears in a complete sentence, and key terms are also listed at the end of each chapter.

Book Description
In singularity theory and algebraic geometry the monodromy group is embodied in the Picard-Lefschetz formula and the Picard-Fuchs equations. It has applications in the weakened 16th Hilbert problem and in mixed Hodge structures. In the theory of systems of linear differential equations one has the Riemann-Hilbert problem, the Stokes phenomena and the hypergeometric functions with their multidimensional generalizations. In the theory of homomorphic foliations there appear the Ecalle-Voronin-Martinet-Ramis moduli. On the other hand, there is a deep connection of monodromy theory with Galois theory of differential equations and algebraic functions. All this is presented in this book, underlining the unifying role of the monodromy group. The material is addressed to a wide audience, ranging from specialists in the theory of ordinary differential equations to algebraic geometers. The book contains a lot of results which are usually spread in many sources. Readers can quickly get introduced to modern and vital mathematical theories, such as singularity theory, analytic theory of ordinary differential equations, holomorphic foliations, Galois theory, and parts of algebraic geometry, without searching in vast literature.

Book Description
Foliations, groups and pseudogroups are objects which are closely related via the notion of holonomy. In the 1980s they became considered as general dynamical systems. This book deals with their dynamics. Since “dynamics” is a very extensive term, we focus on some of its aspects only. Roughly speaking, we concentrate on notions and results related to different ways of measuring complexity of the systems under consideration. More precisely, we deal with different types of growth, entropies and dimensions of limiting objects. Invented in the 1980s (by E. Ghys, R. Langevin and the author) geometric entropy of a foliation is the principal object of interest among all of them.
Throughout the book, the reader will find a good number of inspirating problems related to the topics covered.

Book Description
Julian Schwinger (1918-1994) was one of the giants of 20th Century science. He contributed to a broad range of topics in theoretical physics, ranging from classical electrodynamics to quantum mechanics, from nuclear physics through quantum electrodynamics to the general theory of quantum fields. Although his mathematical prowess was legendary, he was fundamentally a phenomenologist. He received many awards, including the first Einstein Prize in 1951, and the Nobel Prize in 1965, which he shared with Richard Feynman and Sin-itiro Tomonaga for the self-consistent formulation of quantum electrodynamics into a practical theory. His more than 70 doctoral students have played a decisive role in the development of science in the second half of this century.
This important volume includes many of Schwinger's most important papers, on the above and other topics, such as the theory of angular momentum and the theory of many-body systems. The papers collected here continue to underlie much of the work done by theoretical physicists today.
Book Description
The lawless days Old West lasted only a short time, but the stories of its outlaws and the havoc they wreaked are legendary. Tough Towns reveals the small American towns that fought back when criminal gangs
invaded their quiet streets, making heroes of ordinary citizens and local lawmen who wouldn’t be pushed
around by armed hoodlums.
Customer Reviews:
Old West this isn't.......2007-01-26
Well written and fun, the book is a collection of chapters dealing with bad guys and good guys. However, a large portion of the book is not the Old West. Several of the shootout stories are in the 1930s, with cars, gangsters, and machine guns. That's not the Old West to me. The majority of the stories are from Oklahoma, so I think I would have had higher regard for the book if it were retitled "Gritty Semi-Modern Tales from the Streets of Oklahoma--" in which case I wouldn't have bought it. But the fact is I was interested in "Old West" material, and I feel somewhat disappointed. Even so, I'll put it on my bookshelf and may look at it again someday ....
True history of the old west.......2007-01-10
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (1/07)
I am both a student of history and a retired Chief of Police. I've spent considerable time reading about the Old West, particularly in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries. My interest has been about the courage of the men and women who built this country, who sustained themselves in truly difficult times. I also have an interest in how law enforcement worked. I used part of that history in one of the chapters of my own book, "Leading Beyond Tradition." I read Mr. Smith's book with equal interest. He presents an historic overview of some of the more infamous folks who lived during those times - factual information. It is fascinating.
Mr. Smith puts the reader with the involved people as if you were right there when the events actually happened. The crimes described and the actions/reactions of regular people are well worth your time to read. This was part of America during that time - these are lessons of value for good people to read, how courage can and does prevail. I recommend "Tough Towns" be part of your library.
Book Description
Taking its name from the infamous basement party room of a major brokerage branch near New York City, Tales from the Boom-Boom Room combines three spellbinding stories -- extreme, widespread sexual harassment and sex discrimination; legal maneuvering by Wall Street firms to deter or quietly settle sensational complaints; and multimillion-dollar class action lawsuits begun by a handful of female whistle-blowers against the two biggest brokerages in the nation.
The author, whose disclosures in the press became a rallying cry against sexual hazing at branch offices across America, takes the reader directly into a red-hot tangle of shocking allegations -- unprintable here -- and strenuous, across-the-board denials by firms and men accused. This drama's repercussions continue today, as new accusations are brought and longstanding complaints move toward the first-ever public hearings that the Boom-Boom Room case brought about.

A Black Eye for Wall Street.......2004-11-10
I found it difficult to put this book down, and I would have given it 5 stars if the ending wasn't so weak. The end left me hanging and was a little confusing with all of the names and trials.
That said, I heard of some of the cast of characters in this book. I even worked for the same firm as one of them, and he was an arrogant guy who thinks his you know what doesn't stink.
Some of the stories in here were bizzare and almost all were well documented. Men and women should read this book to learn about Wall Street's dirty little secret. However, I am not convinced that this is a problem unique to Wall Street. I am positive that discrimination is in all industries, and it is not limited to sexual harrassment.
Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-06-16
Susan Antilla presents a powerful and startling indictment of the sexist behavior of stock brokers working for Wall Street and its offshoots, specifically Smith Barney's Shearson/American Express office in Garden City, Long Island. Women struggled to be hired, and then found that the men in charge of their careers practiced all sorts of sexual harassment and intimidation, from jokes to displays of sexual prowess, physical contact and threats of rape. As she describes, the bosses sought to bar women or trap them in low positions. While painting the broader picture, Antilla focuses on whistle blower, Pam Martens, who revealed the situation when she sued for damages. This skillfully written book reads like a fascinating novel, so graphic and dramatic that it is more like a screenplay than a report. We believe it will draw intense interest from everyone affected by this issue: female executives who face glass ceilings and harassment, male executives who must determine their own philosophies toward their female colleagues and human resource professionals who are charged with watching out for them both.
Kind of Relieving but sad.......2004-01-17
I read this book as I'm very familiar with the Brokerage Industry. I must say, while some of this is appalling, and people should never be treated poorly, it's relieving to know that there is a place where men are (were) still men. Men call each other disparaging remarks, call each other names, basically joke around and take it one step further. Unfortunately, women always want in, and it ends up ruining it for everyone. Any fun or solace we had is gone. It's a shame too, because those same women could have fun too and be "One of the guys" though fear of their lawsuits has now caused even the last bastion of men to fall. Why couldn't you just stick with Dr. Phil and leave us alone. Where can we hide from women and still be ourselves? Is there no place to go?? Even better, why can't those women just join us, rather than fight us! It would seem the last place men can work and have fun, and at the same time have women having fun with them is the Man Show, or the Howard Stern show. I'm sorry that sounds so sad, but it's our truth. Time's have changed, and while our son's will never know it, it's our own fault for caving to their whims, little by little by little. It's a women's world!
Very accurate.......2003-11-09
I was a successful broker for many years in one of Smith Barney's largest offices in the nation, and I can personally attest that the events depicted in this book, while shocking, are not exaggerations.
I would have appreciated if Antilla had consulted with some Constitutional law experts. She should have noted that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld mandatory arbitration shortly after Judge Motley upheld it in this particular lawsuit.
Antilla captures the culture of Shearson Lehman Bros. and Smith Barney with uncanny accuracy. Any investor -- male or female -- should read this book to understand some of the ways that the Wall Street good old boys network circles the wagons to protect their own.
A Case with a Twist.......2003-03-17
I'm a principal at an investment-banking firm although not a stockbroker so reading this book was a good exercise in reviewing the risks at our firm. The coverage in this book is exceptional. As discussed, investment-banking firms are ripe with potential for sexual discrimination. Partly because so many areas work on trading floors which breed a fraternity type atmosphere, partly because stock brokers tend to be fraternity/salesmen type guys, and partly because this environment has assistants, many who are women, working in close contact with these who sometimes consider themselves "masters of the universe." Confidence/cockiness is never in short supply at an investment banking firm's trading floor.
The first part of the book lays out the environment where sexual discrimination was prevalent. It's so clearly offensive that it's amazing there wasn't a larger settlement in this case. But this is where the book greatly details the unique twist in the case. The protagonist goes through two lawyers and watches as her lawyer and the opposing lawyer seem to become more in agreement than her and her lawyer. Eventually she's dropped from the settlement even though her name still appears on the class action suit. So while I thought I was a reading a sexual discrimination, the book turned into attorney/client relationships and attorney greed in class action cases.
Do I think the attorneys became more concerned about their large fee than their client? Yes. Do I think the original client could be difficult to deal with? Yes. But the outcome is tragic and no one got what he or she deserved. Justice was not monetarily served for the defendants in my opinion. I strongly recommend this book if you have interest in investment banking, law or women's issues.
Book Description
A selection of savvy observations on urban ecology from one of the Midwest's foremost authorities on the subject, Hunting for Frogs on Elston collects the best of naturalist Jerry Sullivan's weekly Field & Street columns, originally published in the Chicago Reader. Engaging, opinionated, inspiring, and occasionally irreverent, Hunting for Frogs on Elston pays tribute to Chicago's natural history while celebrating one of its greatest champions.
Published in association with the Chicago Wilderness coalition, Hunting for Frogs on Elston comprehensively chronicles Chicagoland's unique urban ecology, from its indigenous prairie and oft-delayed seasons to its urban coyotes and passenger pigeons. In witty, informed prose, Sullivan evokes his adventures netting dog-faced butterflies, hunting rattlesnakes, and watching fireflies mate. Inspired by regional flora and fauna, Sullivan ventures throughout the metropolis and its environs in search of sludge worms, gyrfalcons, and wild onions. In reporting his findings to otherwise oblivious urbanites, Sullivan endeavors to make "alienated, atomized, postmodern people feel at home, connected to something beyond ourselves."
In the sprawling Chicagoland region, where an urban ecosystem teeming with remarkable life evolves between skyscrapers and train tracks, no writer chronicled the delicate balance of nature and industry more vividly than Jerry Sullivan. An homage to the urban ecology Sullivan loved so dearly, Hunting for Frogs on Elston is his fitting legacy as well as a lasting gift to the urban naturalist in us all.
Customer Reviews:
Witness to Nature's Ways.......2006-05-24
This is a collection of essays recording Jerry Sullivan's nature observations in and around Chicago. The first couple of articles are rather dry accounts about the need to manage Park District properties. I was put off by these first somewhat preachy, plodding essays, and almost didn't go further. I'm glad I did keep reading though - and you will be richly rewarded if you do too!
The book opens up into a warm, intelligent series of observations of nature's amazing details. You will discover what miracles to look for in a feather, in a fungus, on a flower's stamen. And you will learn some of the history of our observations of the subject along the way.
I happen to live near Elston Avenue in Chicago, so I was attracted by this book's title. However people in other places might pass it by because of the obscure Street reference. I wonder if a better title might not have been provided by one of the most interesting chapters in the book. This is the chapter on the early explorations of our Country's western frontiers, when the government sent out surveyors to plot the land. The government was at the time intent on gaining revenue by selling parcels of land to settlers. As they paced off the land for these purposes, the surveyors made use of what they came to call "witness trees." These were mature, proven trees that were likely to stand for many decades more, available to act as reference points for the measurements, as landmarks. In this book, Mr. Sullivan acts as a WITNESS TREE himself, marking the way to some of nature's most fascinating sights and sounds.
My only criticism of the book is that there aren't enough illustrations. There are a few collaborative line drawings - but I wish there were more. Maybe though, just as well. The absence of easy pictures will spur you to get up off the couch after each essay - and go have a look for yourself.
Chicago Au Natural.......2004-05-15
A Naturalists guide to urban Chicago, the title "Field & Street" is a play on the famous magazine title. It is a wonderful compendium of some of the best articles of the last few years from Chicago's famous free weekly newspaper, The Reader. As a youth growing up in the "inner city" I thought the only animal life to be found here were pidgeons, rats, cockroaches and sparrows. Thanks to Jerry Sullivan I discovered (among other things) that the sound of a distant jackhammer was really a nearby Woodpecker. Most "Windy City" residents thought of the Chicago River as a stagnant sludge pool ready to burst into polluted flames at any moment before Jerry began describing the natural wonders to be found on it's shoreline. His articles encouraged me to enjoy the city jogging paths that bring one close to that beauty. And beyond the unexpected wonder that Sullivan's articles bring, is his tremendous writing skill. Even if you don't care about the mallards, storks and cranes that can easily be found if you know where to look, you'll find what he has to say about them fascinating.
What a Hoot!.......2004-05-05
OK, I will admit that I knew the author, Jerry Sullivan. OK, I will admit that the "hoot" of my title refers to our common love of birds. And, yes, some of my work is mentioned in the book. But, after all those disclaimers, I would say you can't go wrong with this book! Jerry was an amazing writer, bringing the natural world to those already knowledgeable and those with no experience "in the field." He could take the most mundane sighting, such as caterpillars in his vegetable garden, and turn it into a story that made you part of the search. He combined scientific knowledge with the everyday world and always with a chuckle, usually at himself. There is something for everyone in this book that is comprised of 70 of his 1500 word essays that were originally published in the Chicago Reader as its "Field and Streets" column between 1984 and 1998. He takes us through the natural areas restoration movement that began in Chicago in an effort to bring back part of the natural heritage of Illinois. He introduces many to the wildlife such as coyotes that live right in our own back yards- and taught me that coyotes eat insects in the spring! He spent a day with ice fishermen and came away bemused about their devotion. There is nothing pretentious about his writing, just as there was nothing pretentious about the writer. This is a book to tuck into your car so that you can read an essay or two while waiting for the kids to finish soccer practice- and maybe to consider whether soccer is the best use of their after-school time. Whether you have spent your entire life in the Chicagoland region or have never set foot here, you will find yourself pulled into the world that surrounds all of us, if only we'd open our eyes to it.

A fun book for many ages.......2006-07-06
My toddlers love this book. We are big Shirley Hughes fans because she creates sweet stories that kids can relate to. Her artwork is full of beautiful colors, little surprises (the cats are very expressive) and familiar scenes. This story is particularly fun because it's a little bit silly but totally realistic. The scenes include characters from many of the Trotter Street stories.

Book Description
Candace Slater's new book focuses on narratives concerning Fray Leopoldo de Alpandeire (1864-1956), a Capuchin friar from Granada and probably the most popular nonconsecrated saint today in all of Spain. In tracing the emergence of a group of contemporary legends about Fray Leopoldo, Slater discusses both the stories she tape-recorded in the streets of Granada and the friar's official biography. She underscores the essential pluralism of the tales, their undercurrent of resistance to institutional authority, and their deep concern for the relationship between past and present. Bearing witness to the subtlety and resilience of even the most apparently conservative folk-literary forms, these stories are not only about the role of saints and miracles in an increasingly secular and industrial society but, first and foremost, also about the legacy of the Franco years.
