5 out of 5 stars Chemistry class showoff.......2007-09-23

This was a great deal! I purchased this book cheaper than anybody in my college chemistry class. It was in good condition and was delivered right away.

My daughter needed this book for college. It arrived in decent condition and was very affordable.

5 out of 5 stars For the more technical student who has had a touch of chemistry prior to tackling this.......2006-08-23

While there is a great deal of convergence about the concepts taught in a one year general chemistry course, the way those principles are taught, to what depth, and the kind of vocabulary used in teaching them varies from text to text. This allows the authors to focus their teaching in ways appropriate to different kinds of students.

This text is geared towards a one year course in general chemistry for students going on to careers in engineering, biology, and other technical fields. The vocabulary of the text is adapted to build up comfort with the technical terms of chemistry and familiarity in working with formulae rather than being content with intuitions about chemistry. It also has a nice addition of the actual people whose names are given to various laws and concepts in chemistry. When the name is presented there is also a picture and a sentence or two about who they were. I enjoyed this a great deal because it brings the text to life a bit more.

Pedagogically there are several nice helps that show the experience the authors have in teaching real life students and the kinds of misconceptions they tend to have. In the margins there are notes called "Keep in Mind" that help students avoid those common traps that come to easily to beginners in any field. There are well chosen diagrams, drawings, and pictures that aid in teaching rather than being content with decoration. The text also has notes entitled "Are You Wondering" that help students deal with questions that are probably arising in their mind as they are working through these concepts for the first time.

The problems in the back are grouped according to the concepts taught in the chapter and the problems numbered in red have the answers provided in the back of the book. They also provide an Integrative Example that shows the concepts in a more real life problem. After these come a series of integrative problems and advanced exercises. These are followed with feature problems and self-assessment exercises. When learning these concepts it is essential to do lots of work with them in order to be sure you understand them and to develop comfort with working with them. It will make learning later in the book easier and allow you to take more from the course after it is completed.

This is an excellent text for students who have had at least a bit of chemistry before tackling this course. And for technical students it will be more rewarding than other more basic texts even though they both cover similar ground. The more technical approach taken here will be more enriching to them.

3 out of 5 stars So-so Book.......2006-12-13

I agree with many of the other reviewers: this book does a semi-decent job of explaining inorganic chemistry. The practice problems are okay, but the layout and organization can be improved upon. Nonetheless, most students have no choice when it comes to choosing a textbook.

1 out of 5 stars poor excuse for a chemistry book!!!.......2006-03-03

This book is required for my chemistry 1 course. I have taken 2 tests, and so far I have a "D" average in this class. The class is online, so I'm relying on this book to learn chemistry. As you can tell from my average, I have learned nothing from this book. I can't understand why colleges always require these VERY over-priced books that sucks. This book is the worst chemistry book that I have ever read - and I have read at least 7 chemistry books. Don't waste your money on this piece of garbage. If it wasn't so expensive, I would use it as a door-stop. By the way, the solutions manual that you can buy as a companion to this book sucks too.

1 out of 5 stars failed attempt at explaining chemistry.......2005-08-30

Incoherence is not an opinion but rather a fact when it comes to associating that word with this book. Petrucci although as a long history with writing chemistry textbooks, still has not been able to provide an adequate explanation to some of the MOST basic concepts of chemistry.

I think he is probably a brilliant chemist as the questions in this book can be challenging; I found them trivial however. This is not because I deem myself intelligent (that goes without saying :) but the fact of the matter is that I had better books to rely on when I was studying undergraduate chemistry.

Silberberg and Malone's Basic Concepts of Chemistry where to two that got me through. I initially was given this book to study from and I found some of the chapters deadly boring.

How Petrucci explains and expounds and Acid-Base, and Quantum Chemistry is satisfactory, however organic chemistry, the concept of the mole and redox are chapters that accentuate the inarticulate nature and the overall dullness of the book.

This is not good becase fundamentally chemical reactions are about the transference, absorption and dissipation of energy which is normally expressed as the "movement of electrons". One of the principle topics in chemistry which first introduces this is redox.

Secondly the concept of the Mole and basic calculations are required and if an individual has only this book to rely on then there is not much hope that the student would get a good enough grasp of what is at hand.

Better Books:

Basic Concepts of Chemistry by Malone. A tried and tested book which takes a layman or (laywoman for that matter) and makes a chemist out of them.

Chemistry by Silberberg: very detailed explanations on various concepts.

Chemistry by Olmsted, if you are short on cash and need a book that does both of the above, then this is it. It is a fairy good book.

1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2004-12-11

This book is the reason why half of the incoming premed population at tulane change to business majors. Please avoid at all cost. If you are assigned this book, go and buy it used so that you can just glimpse over it during class. Buy another better chemistry book and study from that.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Chemistry Book.......2004-11-25

First of all, good thing about this book is that it has lots of practice problems to work with. A lot of questions and exercise problems are sophiscated and challenging. Secondly, the explanations of the text are not confusing at all to me. The figures are well explained, too. ( I don't know why so many reviewers here say "confusing" about the book.)
It is overall a nice book. This book has a few calculation errors and typos but they shouldn't be a big problem for you to understand the concepts of chemistry.
Of course, I have seen better general chemistry books but this book does not confuse you much as long as you know how to read.

                  Book Description

Quantum Computation in Solid State Systems discusses experimental implementation of quantum computing for information processing devices; in particular observations of quantum behavior in several solid state systems are presented. The complementary theoretical contributions provide models of minimizing decoherence in the different systems. Most recent theoretical and experimental results on macroscopic quantum coherence of mesoscopic systems, as well as the realization of solid-state qubits and quantum gates are discussed. Particular attention is given to coherence effects in Josephson devices. Other solid state systems---including quantum dots, optical, ion, and spin devices---are also discussed.

                    Book Description

Wanda Louise Ledbetter—thirteen, "white trash," orphaned, mad, and too smart for her own good—is eyeballing every man leaving the doctors' entrance of the big hospital in Dallas. Perched on her mama's rusted-out Cadillac, she's been there all afternoon—ever since her stepfather, Harley, drunk and abusive after her mother's funeral, yelled out the secret nobody was ever supposed to know: Wanda's daddy wasn't her daddy, and not even her dead mama knew his name—because Wanda was made with donor sperm. So Wanda has grabbed her half-gone grandma and her half-dog Wild Thing and hit the road to find her "real" daddy. There's brave new trouble ahead, and Brave New Wanda is roaring toward it in her mama's junker Caddy.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Witty Texas Fiction With a Big Heart.......2006-10-16

In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, he writes of a future time when babies are born in laboratories -- a chilling, impersonal, and yet not so far-fetched prospect. That possibility, and the title itself, is a point of departure for Lynda Rutledge's recent novel, Brave New Wanda, published by the start-up publisher, Wordfarm. I was attracted to this independent publisher both because it includes some graduates of Wheaton College, former staff with InterVarsity Press, and at least one person with theological training. In addition, they publish John Leax, a wonderful Christian writer. And yet I suspected that they were into more than publishing books for the religious market. I was right.

Indeed, you wouldn't find Brave New Wanda on the shelves of Lifeway or Family bookstores. Not when the "f" word is used in the second paragraph of the first page! I'm not in favor of gratuitous profanity, and yet I am strongly in favor of allowing a character to be authentic, to be who they are. There's no need to clean up Wanda. Wanda is a hardened and profane 13-year old girl who has been let down by life and by the people close to her. When her mother dies, she shoots her stepfather in the foot with a rifle, puts her half-crazy grandmother and Wild Thing (her dog) in her mother's old Cadillac, and hits the road. Her goal? Find her real Daddy.

And that's where the fun begins. It seems Wanda's mother had visited a shadowy artificial insemination clinic in Dallas. That's where Wanda goes. Page one. What she finds is a web of deceit. It seems that one of the doctors decided to donate sperm on multiple ocassions and, thus, is the biological father of dozens of children. It's there she meets Patty Hightower, former Texas Beauty Queen, recently jilted by her husband who made off with his secretary, Patty who for whatever reason had not been able to have a child to complete her "perfect" existence, Patty who is having a very, very bad day. She's thrown together with Wanda, and both discover who they are through the journey to find Wanda's "real" father.

In a real sense, Brave New Wanda asks the question that we all ask: Who am I? Wanda is searching for that perfect Daddy, the one who will welcome her into his life and make it all right. Patty is looking for the idealistic lifestyle any beauty queen would want -- perfect husband, home in the suburbs, designer baby, important job, and, of course, perpetual good looks. They both find out that what they thought they wanted is not what they need, that life is messy and grand, that the roots they sought -- the things that they thought would give their lives meaning -- were no roots at all. Rutledge doesn't give us the answers, only hints, but that's part of the beauty of the book: it's not all tied up neatly in the end, and yet the suggestion of resolution is there. In the end, Wanda Ledbetter is brave, and new, brave enough to say to that donor Daddy "So here it is: I'm too mean to live but I'm too mean to wither, too, you hear. Just so you know. . . . Hey, you don't know what you're missing." And new enough to get some roots -- her own roots, ones that were there all along.

Brave New Wanda is a funny book built on tragic occurrences, written in a breezy style, dialog-rich and Texas through and through. It reminded me a bit of a more poignant Clyde Edgerton. I recommend it, not as the best book around, but as a piece of serious, enjoyable work. Knee slapping funny while at the same time thoroughly thought provoking. I'm still thinking about it. Brave New Wanda is a great title. The future is here. It's a good title for a book about such a controversial topic as donor insemination. And, yes, it's funny. Five stars. Strongly recommend that lots of people read this one. It'd make a fantastic movie, too.
