Book Description
Parasites evolve under selective pressures which are different from those acting on free-living organisms. The aim of this textbook is to present these pressures and to show how they have shaped the ecology of parasites over evolutionary time. Broad theoretical concepts are explained simply and clearly and illustrated throughout with example organisms. The book will be an invaluable text for advanced undergraduate biologists who are studying evolutionary biology, ecology, population biology, parasitology and evoluationary ecology. It will also prove to be a valuable reference to postgraduate students and researchers in the same fields.

Book Description
Modelling Change in Environmental Systems addresses the concepts and principles of model construction for environmental systems, as well as the scientific achievements of environmental modelling in key areas of the natural sciences. The book evaluates the use of models in different environmental systems, assessing the limitations of environmental modelling and identifying the restrictions these limitations might place on making predictions on the effects of environmental change. New techniques and approaches which might be successfully applied to understanding environmental processes and to making predictions in the face of uncertainty are appraised. The book is divided thematically, beginning with an introduction on modelling and numerical issues. Individual environmental systems are then explored in detail, examining models for various problems in hydrological and ecological systems, followed by modelling of large-scale systems including circulation of the atmosphere and oceans. The final chapters consider data and decision support systems including climate scenario development, GIS, expert systems and natural resource accounting. The authors are internationally based, providing a comprehensive assessment, and an interdisciplinary perspective of state-of-the-art and future prospects for modelling and simulation in an illustrative, but extensive, range of environmental systems.

Book Description
This accessible volume fills a much-needed gap and addresses core issues on how economic and environmental systems are interconnected looking at how economic frameworks and features of environmental systems can be integrated within formal models to address changes and associated resource management issues at appropriate levels: micro level and national or global level.
The more the relationship between economic and environmental systems is studied analytically and empirically, the more aware we become of the gap in our existing knowledge of environmental data and process parameters. While important empirical questions are unanswered in environmental economics literature, work on the environmental science of ecological systems fails to raise the right questions and identify key variables in human-exploited ecosystems.
This book covers:
- Concepts and Methods
- Land, Water and Production
- Biodiversity, Preservation and Production
- Pollution Externalities
- The Environment and Global Economy
This timely book will be of interest to environmental scientists, economists and policy makers, students, academics, and researchers interested in ecosystems modelling, ecological economics and environmental resource economics.

Book Description
This volume brings together state-of-the-art views on ultraviolet radiation, its modelling, and effects from an interdisciplinary panel of international experts. The growing field of research is presented in a sequence from the arrival of UV light at the top of the atmosphere through its transfer to various biological receptors. Modelling and current issues on UV radiative transfer in clear and turbid environments are discussed. Further, measurements and calibration methods are reviewed and, for the first time, established calibration protocols are presented in a coherent way.

Description:
A toolkit for distributed hydrologic modeling at multiple scales using two independent models within a geographic information system is presented. This open-source, freely available software was developed through a collaborative endeavor involving two Universities and two government agencies. Called the Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment tool (AGWA), this software is written for the ArcView GIS platform and is distributed as an extension via the Internet. AGWA uses commonly available GIS data layers to fully parameterize, execute, and visualize results from both the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Kinematic Runoff and Erosion model (KINEROS2). These two distributed hydrologic models operate at different time scales and are suitable for application across a range of spatial scales. Descriptions of the GIS framework, hydrologic models, spatial analyses and algorithms that control the modeling process are given. Model requirements, limitations on the model applications and calibration techniques are described with examples of the use of AGWA for watershed modeling and assessment at a range of scales.

Description:
A major force affecting many forest ecosystems is the encroachment of residential, commercial and industrial development. Analysis of the complex interactions between development decisions and ecosystems, and how the environmental consequences of these decisions influence human values and subsequent decisions will lead to a better understanding of the environmental consequences of private choices and public policies. Determining conditions of the interactions between human decisions and natural systems that lead to long-term sustainability of forest ecosystems is one goal of this work. Interactions between human stakeholders are represented using multi-agent models that act on forest landscape models in the form of land-use change. Feedback on the effects of these actions is received through ecological habitat metrics and hydrological responses. Results are presented on the dynamics of land-use change under different growth management strategies based on an area of the Dallas-Fort Worth (Texas, U.S.A.) region facing intense residential development.

Description:
The management of urban watersheds has been dominated by providing technological, end-of-pipe solutions to individual environmental problems. The current technological system and management schemes are the result of a stepwise evolutionary process of solving individual problems in succession. The complexity of contemporary problems requires an integrated approach to problem solving and thus innovation. However, the longevity of infrastructure and the co-evolution of management practices and technology resulted quite often in lock-in situations. The interdependence of infrastructure, rules of practitioners and attitudes of the public stabilize the system and prevent change. More flexible systems are required that are able to adapt to changes in environmental and societal boundary conditions. In this paper it is argued that this implies a shift from constructing and managing centralized technology with centralized control, towards the intelligent design of integrated environment-technical-human systems with decentralized and integrated technical systems and distributed and flexible mechanisms of coordination and control. Citizens and stakeholder groups may become active participants of the management scheme. This poses a major challenge for system analysts and system engineers.

Description:
This paper argues that an integrated assessment (IA) approach, combining simulation modelling with deliberative processes involving decision makers and other stakeholders, has the potential to generate credible and relevant assessments of climate change impacts on farming systems. The justification for the approach proposed is that while simulation modelling provides an effective way of exploring the range of possible impacts of climate change and a means of testing the consequences of possible management or policy interventions, the interpretation of the outputs is highly dependent on the point of view of the stakeholder. Inevitably, whatever the responses to climate change, there will be trade-offs between the benefits and costs to a range of stakeholders. The use of a deliberative process that includes stakeholders, both in defining the topics addressed and in debating the interpretations of the outcomes, addresses many of the limitations that have been previously identified in the use of computer-based tools for agricultural decision support. The paper further argues that the concepts of resilience and adaptive capacity are useful for the assessment of climate change impacts as they provide an underpinning theory for processes of change in land use systems. The integrated modelling framework (IMF) developed for the simulation of whole-farm systems is detailed, including components for crop and soil processes, livestock systems and a tool for scheduling of resource use within management plans. The use of the IMF for assessing climate change impacts is then outlined to demonstrate the range of analyses possible. The paper concludes with a critique of the IA approach and notes that issues of quantification and communication of uncertainty are central to the success of the methodology.

Book Description
If you were as rich as Bill Gates and you started a Gay and Lesbian university, what would you teach? Business? Sure. Computers, electronic engineering? Absolutely. A core liberal arts curriculum? You d have to, or all your graduates would be nerds. Theater? Puh-lease. Law and political science might help the cause of Gay rights. Medicine, pharmacy, biochemistry and nursing could train soldiers in the war against AIDS.
But Andy Coulter's more ambitious than that. He wants to teach physical education, all four years. He wants his own Kinsey Institute, to study human sexuality rigorously, comprehensively, and fearlessly. Most of all, he wants to find out how to prevent internalized homophobia and teach 18-year-olds to live life fully.
He's even got one little plan so sinister, so culturally terrifying, it s top secret. He calls it Project W.
You may not agree with his methods, but then, you're not Commando Colt, and he is.
Customer Reviews:
The Creation of the First Gay University.......2005-10-25
Josh Thomas has presented an entirely enjoyable novel about how the dream of a gay college becomes reality.
So often when any new adventure or journey begins, there is a tremendous sense of excitement. Thomas captures this excitement. As a reader, I had trouble putting the book down in the interest in seeing what new development would take place.
Overall, a delightful story of how one wealthy man is inspired by another, to take a bold stand with his wealth and make a difference for the many marginalized gay youth of traditional college age.
Personally, I am opposed to schools which become too specialized by way of their student populations. The real world is the place where we have to live. And it is not all gay, or all black, all female, all smart, or all heterosexual. I recognize that often some groups are so hurt and thrown to the margins in growing up because of narrow-minded definitions of what is "normal" and they are endangered by their feelings of exile. In some cases, specially tailored programs and schools are needed to help these kids remain in school, continue their education, and reach their full potential. Yet, if we provide a special kind of school for anyone who is different, the "mainstream" will have succeeded. We need to transform more of our society, including our educational institutions into places where individual dignity and respect for uniqueness is universal. This maybe far too naive a perspective, but I would hope that it will continue to happen over time. When people of different cultures and points of view come to know one another, they are all enriched and more truly prepared to make changes in the world's views.
In the meantime, we do see the growth of gay and lesbian high schools and a gay university is not beyond imagination considering our current political climate of close-mindedness and revisionist thinking on the meaning of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Plenty of food for thought in Andy's Big Idea. I thorough enjoyed it and would recommend it highly.

Not Just A Big Idea, A Real Possibility.......2003-04-15
This book is about the establishment of the world's first Gay and Lesbian university. We have women's colleges, historically Black colleges, ones for poets and dentists and engineers. What might a Gay one be like?
It's an intriguing thought, and while you may not agree with the author's concept, I bet you start to picture the classroom discussions, the theatricals, the sex education, social clubs, sports teams and that fabulous marching band!
How Andy Coulter goes about creating this school, and why, is plausibly handled and entertainingly written. The pages fly by as this rich egomaniac and his hot, handsome boytoy refine their ideas, raise money and win hearts to create the school. As Andy tells a cheering crowd, "Jerry Falwell has a university. Pat Robertson has a university. Oral Roberts does; the Pope has hundreds. So tell me, isn't it about time Gay and Lesbian people had a university?"
Andy made me laugh, and he made me think; this all could happen someday. Our own research institutes could study politics and social change, immunology and policing, high-tech and fine arts; a university is a center of power. Heck, I'd buy season tickets just to see the drum major and all the twirlers.
Every year, Andy's Alumni will gather for the Homecoming game to watch their Fighting Rebels defeat a Straight team. You can almost smell the nachos and hot pretzels, the tailgate parties done gay-style.
What a fantasy! And one that could be a reality. Andy knows how to make dreams come true, complete with a handsome quarterback and a pretty coed from Queens. I am so glad I matriculated by reading Andy's Big Idea. Now I want to help make it happen for the Next Generation.
