    Book Description

    Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Fields
A Classic Reissue in the IEEE Press Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory
    Donald G. Dudley, Series Editor
"When I begin a new research project, I clear my desk and put away all texts and reference books. Invariably, Harrington's book is the first book to find its way back to my desk. My copy is so worn that it is falling apart."--Dr. Kendall F. Casey, SRI
"In the opinion of our faculty, there is no other book available that serves as well as Professor Harrington's does as an introduction to advanced electromagnetic theory and to classic solution methods in electromagnetics."--Professor Chalmers M. Butler, Clemson University
First published in 1961, Roger Harrington's Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Fields is one of the most significant works in electromagnetic theory and applications. Over the past forty years, it proved to be a key resource for students, professors, researchers, and engineers who require a comprehensive, in-depth treatment of the subject. Now, IEEE is reissuing the classic in response to requests from our many members, who found it an invaluable textbook and an enduring reference for practicing engineers.

    4 out of 5 stars Desk Reference.......2007-01-26

This is a very usefull and accurate reference. This is a very technical book that will give you the answers to wave form propagations and dynamics of waveforms without focusing on specific antenna types. Like any engineering type book it can be dry as is the nature of most technical books. Highly recommended for the graduate level and above.

The seller provided an accurate and complete description of the book for sale. The price was good and was delivered earlier than expected. A+++++ Seller!

5 out of 5 stars Harrington keeps things simple, but no simpler ..........2005-02-04

This is a classic graduate textbook for Advanced Electromagnetics courses. One of the main things that I liked the most about this book is Dr. Harrington's strict adherence to one of Dr. Einstein's principles: "make things simple, but no simpler" - which works perfect for a graduate-level textbook. I am not implying that this book is difficult to follow than other commonly used graduate texts ("Advanced Engineering Electromagnetics" by Balanis comes to mind). In fact, this book is much easier to read and follow than books that tend to derive everything for you (which simply ends up cluttering your thought process with too much detail instead of focussing on the main concept in question). Read the chapter on "Cylindrical Waves" and compare it with its equivalent in Balanis's book, and you will understand my point. This book is quintessential for graduate students contemplating a career in Computational Electromagnetics.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Roger !.......2005-01-28

When I was first introduced to Electro-Magnetics (EM), I thought of Harrington's book as one of these oldies which senior professors have sitting on a dusty shelf. To the novice who I was it lacked the modern flair of the recent publications. Time went on, I took classes which tought me mathematical & numerical recipes, yet left me with little understanding of EM phenomenons. Soon enough and by my own fault I forgot the basic principles while concentrating on the math, and I lost interest. As a microwave design engineer later on I kept bumping into problems which had not yet been discussed in the litterature or for which I needed a simpler solution than the numerical approaches that are in fashion. I looked for the book which would offer the right mix of theoritical treatment and engineering relevance for the likes of me. I noticed that Harrington's was the most quoted one in the litterature just about, and thought that there must be a good reason for this. So I ordered a copy. I went through it with a pen in hand and solved the exercises at the end of each chapter. It was frustrating at first, because I had long lost the habit of manipulating the basic math of EM. I kept at it however, as the more I read the more I realised how much I ignored. I even got the taste for EM over time. Harrington's thus became a reference to which I turn almost every time I face a new EM problem. From a didactic point of view it is about the best textbook I have ever come across. Also it has more relevance to modern EM engineering than it seems at first sight: one will even find a mention of the coplanar waveguide (p.135)! I warmly recommend it to both the engineer and the student. But remember: read it with a pen in hand, and do the exercises at the end of each chapter! A couple of shortcomings I ought to mention though: the stationary formula for the input impedance of a wire dipole radiator (7.9) is not well explained (see Jordan & Balmain's, 14.09), nor are stationary formulae for the impedance matrix of general networks (3.8). Still: a very good buy. Harrington's "Field Computation by Moment Methods" is an other good one by the way.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......1999-06-19

I was introduced to this classic while I was a master's (M.Tech) student at IIT Kharagpur, India in 1981.

Prof. Harrington's very pithy approach provoked me to think deeply on the subject. It is because of this book that my interest in the subject has been alive and vibrant today.

I met Prof. Harrington for the 1st time at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Conference at Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1993. Prof. Harrington comforted me by saying that he has no plans to do any alterantions to this classic text in the near future.

This book is not for the indolent and hence is not for causal reading like many lengthy and `verbose' textbooks on this subject. However, if I have ever an opportunity for organizing a 1st-year graduate course on EM theory, I shall use Harrington. Why wouldn't you ?

      Book Description

Electrical Engineering/Electromagnetics Methods for Electromagnetic Field Analysis A volume in the IEEE Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory Donald G. Dudley, Series Editor … a gigantic platter of formulae of the dyadic kind.'—Akhlesh Lakhtaki, Professor, The Pennsylvania State University This monograph discusses mathematical and conceptual methods applicable in the analysis of electromagnetic fields and waves. Dyadic algebra is reviewed and armed with new identities it is applied throughout the book. The power of dyadic operations is seen when working with boundary, sheet and interface conditions, medium equations, field transformations, Greens functions, plane wave problems, vector circuit theory, multipole and image sources. Dyadic algebra offers convenience in handling problems involving chiral and bianisotropic media, of recent interest because of their wide range of potential applications. The final chapter gives, for the first time in book form, a unified presentation of EIT, the exact image theory, introduced by this author and colleagues. EIT is a general method for solving problems involving layered media by replacing them through image sources located in complex space. The main emphasis of the monograph is not on specific results but methods of analysis. The contents should be of interest to scientists doing research work in various fields of electromagnetics, as well as to graduate students. The addition of problems and answers in this reprint will enhance the teaching value of this work. Also in the series… Mathematical Foundations for Electromagnetic Theory Donald D. Book Description

This book gives a complete overview of the classical electromagnetic theory, together with detailed insight in modern numerical methods for analysis of the problems in electromagnetics. Classical electromagnetic theory was developed in the 19th century, but due to the wide range of applications from electrical apparatus such as motors or heaters to telecommunications this subject is still very interesting. This book explains basic postulates and laws of the theory and its specialization to static and time-dependent problems. Special attention is given to utilization of computers in application of the modern numerical methods to solution of electromagnetic field problems.

                      Book Description

This book covers some recent advances in string theory and extra dimensions. Intended mainly for advanced graduate students in theoretical physics, it presents a rare combination of formal and phenomenological topics, based on the annual lectures given at the School of the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (2001) — a traditional event that brings together graduate students in high energy physics for an intensive course of advanced learning. The lecturers in the School are leaders in their fields.

The first lecture, by E D'Hoker and D Freedman, is a systematic introduction to the gauge-gravity correspondence, focusing in particular on correlation functions in the conformal case. The second, by L Dolan, provides an introduction to perturbative string theory, including recent advances on backgrounds involving Ramond-Ramond fluxes. The third, by S Gubser, explains some of the basic facts about special holonomy and its uses in string theory and M-theory. The fourth, by J Hewett, surveys the TeV phenomenology of theories with large extra dimensions. The fifth, by G Kane, presents the case for supersymmetry at the weak scale and some of its likely experimental consequences. The sixth, by A Liddle, surveys recent developments in cosmology, particularly with regard to recent measurements of the CMB and constraints on inflation. The seventh, by B Ovrut, presents the basic features of heterotic M-theory, including constructions that contain the Standard Model. The eighth, by K Rajagopal, explains the recent advances in understanding QCD at low temperatures and high densities in terms of color superconductivity. The ninth, by M Sher, summarizes grand unified theories and baryogenesis, including discussions of supersymmetry breaking and the Standard Model Higgs mechanism. The tenth, by M Spiropulu, describes collider physics, from a survey of current and future machines to examples of data analyses relevant to theories beyond the Standard Model. The eleventh, by M Strassler, is an introduction to supersymmetric gauge theory, focusing on Wilsonian renormalization and analogies between three- and four-dimensional theories. The twelfth, by W Taylor and B Zwiebach, introduces string field theory and discusses recent advances in understanding open string tachyon condensation. The thirteenth, by D Waldram, discusses explicit model building in heterotic M-theory, emphasizing the role of the E8 gauge fields.

The written presentation of these lectures is detailed yet straightforward, and they will be of use to both students and experienced researchers in high-energy theoretical physics for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A huge alarm clock for the citizen mind.......2007-08-19

I love this book. Since I have discovered it, I keep on recommending it to all my friends and to the people I care of. And I tell you, too: Run! Buy it, read it asap and keep it on your desk in everyday life.

I feel very ashamed about having come to know about this author so late and found this book in particular only now: as far as I understand it was released in 1994!

So I explain you the reason why for this late enthusiasm for this book. I had the occasion to listen to a public speech about globalism of Mr. Raulston Saul last March at the Shanghai International Literary Festival. Raulston Saul was brilliant and entertaining, and seemed to have developed a lot of ideas I was thinking about myself, rather in loneliness, in the last years. However, having never heard of him and not read one of his many works I felt uncomfortable and didn't feel like meeting him and shaking hands after the speech. After reading this book I will regret that forever...
Back home I searched Amazon and bought his books in bulk. I haven't yet read all of them, of course, but I feel like an urgent need to recommend this book to everybody.

In the form of a dictionary, this book is a masterpiece of communication and a pleasure to read.
By an extraordinary sense of humour and an entertaining prose Mr. Saul shows us how many ideas are circulated in modern society in the form of truths and passively accepted, unveiling for us the subtle play of the technocrat elites behind them, thus exercising power and control, with the result to devoid our modern democracies of real participation and responsibility from the part of the citizens.

I have an economic background and I attended university in Italy during the fabulous Eighties, a time we were prepared only for growth and success. The Nineties proved quite different and I have always thought we were facing times with a set of tools (truths!) which simply no longer fit. We lived the Nineties thinking by ourselves `Maybe this is just lasting some years and then we are back to the Eighties'. But this has never happened.
What really strikes me is the early perception and warning - and the depth of it - of many issues of contemporary life by Raulston Saul. I have been thinking in my loneliness a lot of things along Raulston Saul's lines but I always felt I missed the historical knowledge necessary to put many issues in the right perspective and demonstrate what my critical sense was able to outspeak in an almost wild way.
Now, I don't say I am today in the condition to check and verify all the facts quoted in the book - I still feel too ignorant and still need to investigate a lot of things - taken from the huge, multifaceted and wonderful culture of Saul - summarized and organized in the form of evidences of the aggressive common sense definitions given in the book. But I know it doesn't mind. This would be a lazy way to take Saul's clever book and right a manifestation of lack of doubt which is exactly what the author dislikes, that in fact the most important and revolutionary message of the book is "Citizen, set free your powerful ability to doubt as a mean to check other people assumptions, to get a better understanding of things, to participate in the decisions that shape our world and the life of the people who live in it".
Being overloaded of communication we have lost the habit to check what we are said also due to a lack of time. We leave in a time where brands guide us in our choices and help us to feel ensured about them to be right. We finish to make the same with ideas that circulate under brand names themselves. We tend to quote brands and to become lazy thinkers and we take for right the most advertised ideas. We become lazy also because so many important issues in contemporary life are put in such a complicated and technical way we often just give up to verify the truth, and just verify the brand that truth is labelled with.
Saul is such a great communicator. Using a Western philosophic approach in developing its definitions, putting them in an historical context in a very free and charming way, he makes us aware of so many common sayings, representing very clear interests of elites made blurred by difficult definitions and obscure technicalities, sold us as inevitable truth that time proved to be fashions.

So, even with a terrible delay, I tell I have enjoyed in particular the following voices: DOUBT, CIVILIZATION, the HOLY TRINITY - Late Twentieth Century (COMPETITION, EFFICIENCY and MARKET PLACE), Harvard School of Business and Chicago School of Economics, BUSINESS CONFERENCE, BALLROOM, DAVOS and ASPEN, HUMANISM, HAPPINESS, ECONOMETRICS, DUAL USE, ARMAMENTS, just to mention a few because many others are masterpieces as well.

Enjoy the book and the practice of the art of doubting.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to critical thinking.......2006-03-27

I picked this book up at a little bookstore out of curiosity, and have since named it the one of the most influential books I've ever read.

                      Some bookmarked definitions are :
                      Destiny: Being rewarded for cooperation
Intelleigence: The ruling elite's description of its own strengths
Dictionary: Opinion presented as truth in alphabetical order

I've always been a critical thinker, but this book helped accelerate that thought process to my current position as a smart ass college student. Get this book if you want to have your mind frazzled.

The main problem with this book is that it's just not funny, although Saul tries so very hard to be. Ambrose Bierce he is not. Nor much of an incisive critic in the Frankfurt School vein either, though no doubt he wishes he had Adorno's acerbic wit. What the book ends up being, then, is a collection of half-baked observations written in workaday prose. The entries either are utterly pointless ("HAPPY HOUR: A depressing comment on the rest of the day and a victory for the most limited Dionysian view of human nature.") or take potshots at ideas and people far too complicated for Saul's facile understanding of the universe (the entry on Plato begins: "Brilliant novelist. Accomplished humourist. In spite of which he wasn't as much the author of Socrates as he would have wished"--okay, but who WOULD be, I wonder, since Socrates wrote no books himself? Would Saul argue that it'd be better to have no books at all purporting to summarize Socrates' thoughts than those by Plato?). This is exactly the sort of book written by someone who's told by his dull-witted friends once too often that he's so funny and smart he ought to write down his pensees for the benefit of mankind.

5 out of 5 stars An abecedarium of subversion........2003-07-02

This should truly be compulsory reading for journalists, students, professors, and those who generally like to be informed. Those who prefer to wallow in intellectual mediocrity and ignorance may stay clear of this volume. John Ralston Saul articulates what we all know and yet refuse to believe. Illuminating and necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Biting Commentary Essential to all Concerned Citizens.......2001-07-05

Saul has attempted to place the current use of language for the purpose of public discussion into historical terms. Through the unusual format of a dictionary-style argument, Saul convincingly argues that our public officials' obsession with a society conceived upon the faith of knowledge specialization and economic quantification has swerved Western Civilization (as defined by the values that emerged out of the Enlightenment) off the very basis of what has allowed our societies to develop, prosper and gain greater informational and monetary wealth.

Throughout the argument, Saul points out that historically, it is not through a blinding respect for one (sometimes isolated) principle that Western societies have developed, but that it is through careful (humanist) consideration of the complex and interrelated problems that constantly confront the varying interests of society. Though sometimes appalling in its generalizations and uncited factual accounts, the book is a satirical and correct swipe at our use of language sure to affect your own analysis of daily events.
