Book Description
Professor Skripov obtained worldwide recognition with his monograph "Metastable liquids", published in English by Wiley & Sons.
Based upon this work and another monograph published only in Russia, this book investigates the behavior of melting line and the properties of the coexisting crystal and liquid phase of simple substances across a wide range of pressures, including metastable states of the coexisting phases. The authors derive new relations for the thermodynamic similarity for liquid-vapour phase transition, as well as describing solid-liquid, liquid-vapor and liquid-liquid phase transitions for binary systems employing the novel methodology of thermodynamic similarity.

best reference.......2002-06-11
this is the best reference book i have found on this topic. everything you could reasonably expect is spelled out in it explicitly. highly recommended.
great book to thermodynamics of crystals.......2000-07-05
I found this is a very good reference for my beginning in studying of lattice dynamics and thermodynamics of crystals. It provides the theory framework for the equilibrium thermodynamics properties of perfect crystals. To me, this book is very helpful to understand the theory in physics of solid state. It starts with the basic theories of thermodynamics, such as, thermodynamics functions, state variables, wave propagation, etc.. Then it moves to crystal potentials (and their expansions about the equilibrium configuration, the stability and symmetries. etc), to crystal vibration problems(eigenvalue problems and operator theories for Hamiltonian system), and to the advance topic of phonon thermodynamics, band-structure theory, and pseudopotential perturbation theory. Finally, it provides the model calculation and experimental data analysis. All materials are treated gradually from simple to complicated (I means mathematically) Graduate level knowledge in mathematics is necessary to read this book. Allover, I think this is a very good reference.

Phase Transformations in Metals and Alloys, Second Edition
ASIN: 3540664963 |
Book Description
Crystal growth and nucleation are treated in the specialized literature in different ways depending on the discipline in question (physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering) and on the theoretical approaches (atomistic vs continuum approach as regards crystal growth, phase vs chemical concept as regards nucleation). This book relates the different approaches to one another, giving preference to atomistic treatments by the methods of statistical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. This unified approach also facilitates an understanding of some related phenomena of surface physics, such as adsorption, wetting etc. The book allows research novices and graduate students to get an insight into the physics of the phenomena and to interpret some of the experimental results.

Book Description
Continuum Models for Phase Transitions and Twinning in Crystals presents the fundamentals of a remarkably successful approach to crystal thermomechanics. Developed over the last two decades, it is based on the mathematical theory of nonlinear thermoelasticity, in which a new viewpoint on material symmetry, motivated by molecular theories, plays a central role. This is the first organized presentation of a nonlinear elastic approach to twinning and displacive phase transition in crystalline solids. The authors develop geometry, kinematics, and energy invariance in crystals in strong connection and with the purpose of investigating the actual mechanical aspects of the phenomena, particularly in an elastostatics framework based on the minimization of a thermodynamic potential. Interesting for both mechanics and mathematical analysis, the new theory offers the possibility of investigating the formation of microstructures in materials undergoing martensitic phase transitions, such as shape-memory alloys. Although phenomena such as twinning and phase transitions were once thought to fall outside the range of elastic models, research efforts in these areas have proved quite fruitful. Relevant to a variety of disciplines, including mathematical physics, continuum mechanics, and materials science, Continuum Models for Phase Transitions and Twinning in Crystals is your opportunity to explore these current research methods and topics.

Book Description
Phase transitions and critical phenomena in liquids and liquid crystals have been the subject of intensive research since the 1960s. However, books on this fascinating subject have tended to be written by theorists for theorists. Professor Anisimov offers us a new approach: he aims to introduce experimentalists to the modern theories and their applications. After introducing the thermodynamics of phase transitions, he presents the modern theory of critical phenomena. He then concludes by illustrating the utility of this theory in the analysis of experimental measurements in classical fluids and binary mixtures, superfluid mixtures of helium isotopes and liquid crystals. Not only will this book be enjoyed by experimental physicists, chemists and material scientists, it will also offer the theorist an insight into the interpretation of the experimentalist's work.

ASIN: 0444515186 |
Book Description
This volume provides an overview of current research and recent advances in the area of energetic materials, focusing on decomposition, crystal and molecular properties. The contents and format reflect the fact that theory, experiment and computation are closely linked in this field.
Since chemical decomposition is of fundamental importance in energetic performance, this volume begins with a survey of the decomposition processes of a variety of energetic compounds. This is followed by detailed studies of certain compounds and specific mechanisms, such as nitro/aci-nitro tautomerism. Chapter 6 covers the transition from decomposition to crystal properties, with molecular dynamics being the primary analytical tool. The next several chapters deal with different aspects of the crystalline state, again moving from the general to particular. There is also a discussion of methods for computing gas, liquid and solid phase heats of formation. Finally, the last portion of this volume looks at the potential of high-nitrogen molecules as energetic systems; this has been of considerable interest in recent years.
Overall, this volume illustrates the progress that has been made in the field of energetic materials and some of the areas of current activity. It also indicates the challenges involved in characterizing and understanding the properties and behaviour of these compounds. The work is a unique state-of-the-art treatment of the subject, written by pre-eminent researchers in the field.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable to the last page!.......2003-04-09
I'm gonna have to agree with every other review that I've read about this book so far, it's great! Definitely a book to pick up if you're looking to have a good time reading. I haven't even seen a movie lately that I've enjoyed as much as this book.
Desert authors rule!.......2003-04-07
I first picked up this book because the authors were from Tucson. I wasn't sure about how good it would be but now I'm really glad that the authors are from Tucson otherwise I might have missed out on one of the best books I've ever read! It's refreshing to read something that doesn't even give an attempt to be serious and yet also contains so many horror elements. I hope these guys keep writing 'cause I want more!
Video games meet the world of novels!.......2003-03-15
This book is great. A wonderful horror and comedy novel that will appeal to fans of both. It will even appeal to video gamers as it almost seems like a parody of the famous Resident Evil series. Definitely check this book out. I loved it!
