      Book Description

This book contains the notes of five short courses delivered at the "Centro Internazionale Matematico Estivo" session "Integral Geometry, Radon Transforms and Complex Analysis" held in Venice (Italy) in June 1996: three of them deal with various aspects of integral geometry, with a common emphasis on several kinds of Radon transforms, their properties and applications, the other two share a stress on CR manifolds and related problems. All lectures are accessible to a wide audience, and provide self-contained introductions and short surveys on the subjects, as well as detailed expositions of selected results.

        Book Description

This book, based on the author's monograph, "The Bidual of C(X) I", throws new light on the subject of Lebesgue integration and contributes to clarification of the structure of the bidual of C(X).

Kaplan generalizes to the bidual the theory of Lebesgue integration, with respect to Radon measures on X, of bounded functions (X is assumed to be compact). The bidual of C(X) contains this space of bounded functions, but is much more "spacious", so the body of results can be expected to be richer. Finally, the author shows that by projection onto the space of bounded functions, the standard theory is obtained.

                Book Description

This book covers facts and methods for the reconstruction of a function in a real affine or projective space from data of integrals, particularly over lines, planes, and spheres. Recent results are collected stressing explicit analytic methods. Another focus consists of the relations between algebraic integral geometry and partial differential equations.
A concise basic course in harmonic analysis and distribution theory is given in the first chapter. The first half of the book includes the ray, the spherical mean transforms in the plane or in 3-space, and inversion from incomplete data. It will be of particular interest to application oriented readers. Further chapters are devoted to the Funk-Radon transform on algebraic varieties of arbitrary dimension.
The material appeals to graduates and researchers in pure and applied mathematics who are interested in image reconstruction, inverse problems or functional analysis.

These notes are designed as a text book for a course on the Modern Physics Theory for undergraduate students. The purpose is providing a rigorous and self-contained presentation of the simplest theoretical framework using elementary mathematical tools. A number of examples of relevant applications and an appropriate list of exercises and answered questions are also given.

The first part is devoted to Special Relativity concerning in particular space-time relativity and relativistic kinematics.

The second part deals with Schroedinger's formulation of quantum mechanics. The presentation concerns mainly one dimensional problems, in particular tunnel effect, discrete energy levels and band spectra.

The third part concerns the application of Gibbs statistical methods to quantum systems and in particular to Bose and Fermi gasses.

                                    Book Description

The book focuses on the main physical ideas and mathematical methods of the microscopic theory of fluids, starting with the basic principles of statistical mechanics. The detailed derivation of results is accompanied by explanation of their physical meaning. The same approach refers to several specialized topics of the liquid state, most of which are recent developments, such as: a perturbation approach to the surface tension, an algebraic perturbation theory of polar nonpolarizable fluids and ferrocolloids, a semi-phenomenological theory of the Tolman length and some others. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students in physics and chemistry with research interests in the statistical physics of fluids.

                                      Book Description

Deep connections are emerging in the physics of non-thermal systems, such as granular media, and other "complex systems" such as glass formers, spin glasses, colloids or gels. This book discusses the unifying physical theories, developed in recent years, for the description of these systems. The special focus of the book is on recent important developments in the formulation of a Statistical Mechanics approach to granular media and the description of out-of-equilibrium dynamics, such as "jamming" phenomena, ubiquitous in these "complex systems". The book collects contributions from leading researchers in these fields, providing both an introduction, at a graduate level, to these rapidly developing subjects and featuring an up to date, self contained, presentation of theoretical and experimental developments for researchers in areas ranging from Chemistry, to Engineering and Physical Sciences.

Leo turned the newly minted corpse over to minimize blood seepage onto the carpet and dragged the body into the kitchen. Like MacGyver gone wild and given over to the Dark Side of the Force, he rounded up the last of his cocaine, a bong, a tube of Super Glue, a can of lighter fluid, a wooden match and went to work on Paulie.

Just when you thought it was safe to take that long-awaited Vegas vacation, along comes a novel to stop you dead in your tracks. Welcome to the Wild Wild West, 21st century style. Don't be fooled by the slick media ads—the violence hasn't subsided. Lawlessness is simply done with more flair and in designer clothing.

Sin City Refugees is a black comedy that that aims to do for Las Vegas what the King of Pop did for plastic surgery. This series of intertwined stories provides an aggressive take on the new American Dream—and the high price people are willing to pay to achieve it. It's a modern cautionary tale containing no morals, explanations, or easy answers.

5 out of 5 stars This book will keep you riveted...........2005-10-04

A whole slew of characters and subplots are introduced from the get go and manage to weave themselves together in a web of murder, theft, and the lust for fame and fortune. What better backdrop for this story than Las Vegas? This is not the glitzy, glamorous side of Vegas...this is the dark, seedy, frightening side that the tourist does not see. Toss in some humor at just the right moments and you've got a book that you will not want to put down!

                                        4 out of 5 stars Fast-paced Romp Through Vegas.......2005-08-29

Hattaway sets up the novel with a slew of characters, seven to be exact, plus the members of the Blue Haired Group. By the time the three bingo-playing ladies convene a meeting to discuss how to capture Leo, "The Bingo Bandit" who's stolen $1 million AND their fun, we know we're in for an amusing romp.

This character driven novel reminded me of Elmore Leonard's early work. While technically a mystery, it's the quirky characters who drive the plot and entertain along the way.

5 out of 5 stars This mystery novel has it all! .......2005-08-01

This book is a fantastic read. Mr. Hattaway's characters simply jump off the page. The dialogue is snappy and sardonic; there's a real sense of satire regarding life in Las Vegas. This novel is intricately plotted, but always with an eye to what is unique about life in Sin City. Hattaway has a Hunter Thompson-like sense of what is truthful yet "out-there" about life in Vegas, and uses the "noir" genre to make his point. Mystery lovers will appreciate this novel, as will anyone who enjoys good satire about our modern life in the country's wackiest resort town. Buy this book and enjoy the ride.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and exciting--with nice tongue-in-cheek humor.......2005-07-01

Freed from prison by a Nevada State error, Stanley Bupkis, now with a manufactured identity proving him to be Dallas Fort Worth, is looking for a job with no paperwork requirements. He is hired to investigate a strange death--an apparent suicide by hanging. Writer Alan Johnson is stuck in the middle of his novel--the one that's supposed to be his breakout, but that just might break him. He decides to head to Las Vegas to connect with his theme. The blue-haired ladies watch for the poker machine set for a big payoff and play bingo--until a con-man rips the bingo system off to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars.

In Las Vegas, crime, greed, sex, and fame are unhidden and obvious.

Author Ken Hattaway mixes hardcore grit with tongue-in-cheek humor as he follows the lives of a number of people over a few days in America's 'sin city.' People are clipped on the head, threatened with guns, transformed by tattoo artists, chased by blue-haired ladies, and amazed by the incompetence of Nevada's prison system in fast order. Hattaway's strong voice and professional writing kept me engaged in the story--even when the sheer number of characters threatened to overwhelm me.

SIN CITY REFUGEES is one of those books I finished in a single reading. I have no hesitation in recommending this one.
