Since the author published his first book in 1990, he has shifted much of his time from research and teaching to operating his own small winery and consulting world-wide with other winemakers. Thus, this new text has a very practical and applied science character. In addition there have been significant discoveries and technological advances in winemaking since the original text. The enlarged sections on fermentation, skin contact, acid balance, the use of oak, phenolics and quality control reflect and expand upon the original text.

This is a "how-to" book, organized in the sequence of the processes a winemaker faces when confronted with the rapid challenge of converting fresh grapes into good wine. As the author points out, the grapes will make wine by themselves due to natural biological and chemical processes. However, to make good wine or even great wine, nature must be guided by the skilled and artful hand of the winemaker.

The author's many years of experience in producing many different wines helps the reader focus on the right processes at the right time to achieve winemaking success. This book stands on the shoulders of the original highly acclaimed text and again it can be said: "Don't make wine without it"!

The Best book!!.......2007-10-01

Love the book, first borrowed it from my local library. The binding does tend to crack with much use, so I broke my book's binding and put all the pages in clear cover sheets in a 3 ring binder. Cost a little more but it was worth it because now I don't have to worry about destroying it and my book will last a lot longer. I found this book the most helpful in explaining how to do the signs as well as illustrating them in very clear photos. I highly recommend!!!

An amazing book!.......2007-09-30

Before buying this, I ran into the author at the MET Museum in NYC on an interpreted tour one Friday night. He was very personable and I decided to purchase it. I am glad I did. Very well researched with tidbits on deaf history/culture/etiquette, along with actual pictures of signs (rather than hard-to-see drawings) that show good facial expressions. Overall, a real pleasure and find!

Best Book To Sign.......2007-06-14

This is the best book I have found to learn to sign.
I kept the copy from the library checked out for so long, and kept going overdue, and was wearing it out, I figured I'd best go ahead and purchase my own copy.
I tried other books, but they were useless to me.
I purchased a dvd set from amazon, but the dvd set was horrible - and if your looking for sign dvd's, you'll see which one (set) I warn you about.
A couple copies of this book (you'll will wear this hvy duty book out - from much use) or a hard bound edition will get you communicating w/ your deaf friend quickly - but you have to study.

Very helpful in learning the sign language. The use of photo and memory hint is excellent. We have tried other material and find this one easier and more conducive to memory retention.

i'm from Venezuela, this is the first book i bought when i got here, i bought it in english "to practice" and i thought it wouldn't be the same but it's a really great book. i don't really like short stories but i loved this one. i think anyone who likes any book from Gabriel García Marquez would love this one to. i like everything i've red from him, the last one (i red), "El amor en los tiempos de colera", was just beautiful.

"Ojos de Perro Azul" es una recopilación de cuentos publicados por GGM entre 1947-1952 -antes que apareciera su primera novela. En cada uno de ellos se puede evidenciar con claridad su evolución como escritor.

En los cinco primeros veremos a un Gabriel desconocido -sin una dirección aparente-, misterioso, onírico, fantaseando con la vida y la muerte. Empleando, además, un lenguaje intrincado que obstaculiza una lectura fluida debiendo el lector detenerse, y a veces hasta retroceder, para descubrir si el personaje que está en escena es el vivo, el muerto, o quizás el muerto que pensaba estar vivo -así de escabroso resulta en sus inicios. Sin embargo, recien en "Ojos de Perro Azul" -publicado en 1950 y el cual con justicia le confiere el título al libro- es donde GGM se encuentra con el escritor que luchaba por nacer .... y nació. Deja de lado los monólogos y logra establecer diálogos, omitiendo frases truculentas y reemplazándolas más bien por otras sencillas y de fácil comprensión.

A diferencia del resto de sus obras -que se publicarían posterior a "Ojos de Perro Azul"- ésta no constituye una hebra de lo que en su conjunto se llamaría "Cien Años de Soledad". Por lo contrario -y es allí donde radica su exquisita rareza- nos muestra mundos y personajes distintos a través de los cuales aún no se vislumbra a Macondo ni mucho menos a un Aureliano Buendía.

Esta obra es, pues, una joya "histórica" invalorable para aquellos que admiramos a Gabo, y nos recuerda que, alguna vez, él también fue humano antes de convertirse en ese ser mágico e inmortal que ahora conocemos como .... Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Los Ojos del Perro Azul es un libro bastante emocionante ya que te hace sentir y vivir cada momento mediante la descripcion; es un libro que una vez empezado de leer no puedes dejar de leerlo porque perderias la idea de la trama. algo que se puede visualizar es que todos los libros que constituyen el libro llevan una secuencia donde cada tema tiene relacion con el titulo de la obra ademas, que pude percatar que en cada parte de los temas que constituyen el libro tienen una conexion que al final de la trama forman lo que es el libro y su titulo en si. tambien es bueno señalar que en este libro Garcia Marquez hace la reseña de el alma como cautiva del cuerpo y el afan del hombre al querer salir de su cuerpo y el temor que siente al mismo tiempo al no saber que hacer despues que su alma ha salido de su cuerpo y el deseo repentino de volver a su vida pero al no tener la capacidad de controlar el alma se queda ambulando en el espacio...

Deftly crafted by an author so convincing in his female persona that the "Publisher's Weekly" reviewer mistakes C.W. Smith for a her, Gabriel's Eye is a fast paced, well plotted, dark and deeply disturbing tale of adolescent longing, professional impropriety, betrayal and redemption that breaks through the binary oppositions that tend to mire us in an either/or (black and white) approach to life, religion and literature. Smith possesses an incredible gift for character development and here breathes life into Susan, a 28-year-old art teacher who listens to classical music, is unabashedly liberal in her politics and is deeply entrenched in an uncommitted relationship with her live-in lover, Curt. When a 17-year-old transfer student named Jeff quietly slips into his first art club meeting, Susan is immediately smitten by his rumpled good looks and shy demeanor, so reminiscent of her first lover, Nathan. Susan rescues Jeff from the rain by offering him a ride home, a ten-minute drive across the Trinity River that becomes the first step in a flirtation fanned by private lessons and good intentions, but doomed to dire consequences. Smith's dedication to the psychology motivating the ill-fated protagonists can be unsettling and will linger long after the last page is turned, but the next time I hear a salacious news story of teacher impropriety I won't be quite as indignant, or so quick to ask--How could she/he? I'll be thinking, instead, of that crush I had on my high school geography teacher and how grateful I am that I never acted on it.

Ever been tempted to pursue a dalliance before solving or exiting your current relationship? This cautionary tale deftly explores the possible lifelong consequences of such an action. Exquisitely plotted and layered with psychological insight, C.W. Smith explores the motivations of two characters separated by age and station. Susan is a teacher and Jeff is one of her students. Susan, unfullfilled by life with her live-in lover Curt, baits the hook for Jeff and step by reversible step reels him in up to the point she chooses to return him to the water as a nonkeeper. However, the hook is in too deep for Jeff and the traitorous betrayal by one of his contemporaries leads to tragic results. You will not be finished with this book when you close the cover after the last page. For a time thereafter you will ponder the moral dilemma, knee-jerk religious cynicism, the attempt to fullfil emotional needs without, or despite, considering the consequences, and finally the possibility of redemption after a monumental struggle.

Reading this book reminded me that I was in love with June Allyson when I was twelve. Pity was June never knew. Or maybe that was a blessing.

Hot for Teacher.......2001-03-27
