Book Description
The new 3rd edition of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica is designed to give practitioners the information they need to practice Chinese herbal medicine with greater understanding and confidence. It provides a wealth of new information -- more than twice the content of the previous edition -- and practical insight into more than 530 of the most commonly used herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia.
Drawing from a wide range of sources, both classical and modern, this edition provides unparalleled perspective and detail that goes far beyond what is available elsewhere to the Western practitioner.
Herbs are grouped in chapters by function, with expanded summaries and tables for contrast and comparison. Each herb is identified by its pharmaceutical, pinyin, botanical, and family names, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English common names.
Key characteristics are provided at the beginning of each entry, along with dosage, properties, channels entered, and relevant cautions and contraindications. This provides a quick overview of essential information.
Actions and indications are integrated with important combinations that illustrate the range of an herb's functions, with references to appropriate formulas. This presents a more three-dimensional picture of how each herb is actually used.
Expanded commentary offers in-depth analysis and places each herb in its clinical context through rich historical references. The mechanisms of action underlying important combinations, and comparisons with similar herbs, provide a broader context for understanding how the herb can be used with optimal effect.
A section devoted to nomenclature and preparation describes the most important methods of processing and preparing each herb, and the advantages of each method. It also provides information about other commonly-used names and historical background.
Safety is an important focus of this edition, with an emphasis on proper herb identification. Issues concerning standardized products, desirable qualities, variants, and adulterants are explained for each herb. There is also extensive information on toxicity, as well as chemical constituents.
The utility of this book is enhanced by its wide range of appendices, among which are color photographs comparing the standard and adulterant forms of over 20 common herbs; tables of herbs that are indicated for specific pathologies of the five yin organs; and extensive cross references of the herbs by taxonomy, pinyin, pharmaceutical name, and other East Asian languages. There are also comprehensive indices of both herbs and formulas, as well as a general index.

Chinese Herbal Medicine.......2007-09-12
This is by far the best Chinese Herbal Medicine referral book I have come across in my studies.
Daunting at first, but then easier to come to terms with later.......2007-05-29
Well, what can you say about this book? This is a hefty, giant book, and could certainly induce some kind of cerbral damage if dropped out of a third story window. :) No, in all seriousness, this is a great, concise book, and as the title of this review implies, it becomes more manageable after you get used to it. Used solely by itself, it will probably not help the student of Chinese herbology to ace any exams, but used in accordance with other study techniques, it will furter deepen and reinforce the studying of the herbs.
The Internet is a nice source of Information, too.......2007-04-23

Operational Quantum Theory I: Nonrelativistic Structures (Operational Physics)
ASIN: 0387297766 |
Book Description
Operational Quantum Theory II is a distinguished work on quantum theory at an advanced algebraic level. Quantum theory (nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and quantum theory) is developed from a representation theory of lie group and lie algebraic operations acting on both finite and infinite dimensional vector spaces. This book deals with Lorentz Group Embedding and Lorentz Operations, eseigenvalues and invariats for non-compact operations as well as harmonic analysis of noncompact nonabelian Lie groups and their homogenus spaces. Additionally, an attempt is given to understand quantum theory as a representation structure of a homogeneous spacetime model. Operational Quantum Theory II aims to understand more deeply on an operational basis what is already known and current developments in quantum theory, but also suggests new solutions to previously unsolved problems.

Book Description
The mathematical theory of contact mechanics is a growing field in engineering and scientific computing. This book is intended as a unified and readily accessible source for mathematicians, applied mathematicians, mechanicians, engineers and scientists, as well as advanced students. The first part describes models of the processes involved like friction, heat generation and thermal effects, wear, adhesion and damage. The second part presents many mathematical models of practical interest and demonstrates the close interaction and cross-fertilization between contact mechanics and the theory of variational inequalities. The last part reviews further results, gives many references to current research and discusses open problems and future developments. The book can be read by mechanical engineers interested in applications. In addition, some theorems and their proofs are given as examples for the mathematical tools used in the models.
Book Description
Plus-size Maggie O'Leary is America's Anti-Diet Sweetheart. Her informed column about the pitfalls of dieting is the one sane voice crying out against the dietocracy. She is perfectly happy with who she is and the life she leads. Until she gets the chance to spend some quality time with Hollywood's hottest star. Maggie knows she can't exactly show up looking like . . . well, herself. So she swallows her words and vows to become the skinniest fat advocate Tinseltown has ever seen.
Swearing her trusted assistant to silence, Maggie embarks on a "secret" makeover. From showdowns with her boss, who is convinced his star columnist is losing her edge -- er, girth -- to run-ins with her closest male friend, the trip through the famed red door of beauty is anything but graceful. But despite her doubts about abandoning the comfortable life she's known -- not to mention deceiving legions of loyal readers who still think of her as their champion, L.A.-bound Maggie is hell-bent on getting her just "desserts"!
Bursting with wit, insight and humor, Deborah Blumenthal's Fat Chance is a guilt-free pleasure that is good to the last page!
Customer Reviews:
Would I read it again? Fat Chance. .......2006-09-12
I just did not get this book. She's fat - how fat, I never get a good idea. She's about to meet some famous hottie, so she gets skinny - even though she's been struggling her whole life with weight issues (so we're told) she can suddenly lose it all for some guy? The "hot" affairs have no heat, the angst you're meant to feel isn't there, and the ending is predictable at best. (BORING at the worst).
The author seems to be trying to deal with 3 main issues - weight, food, and celebrities - without knowing a great deal about any. If you really want to read a fat-chick-lit, pick up Jemima J by Jane Green. This book is just a cheap knock-off.
Think Huge.......2006-08-06
Everything is big - big people, big things, big talk, and big appetite. Maggie has her own column. She doesn't believe in diets and she writes about it. She is not obese, just big. She gives talks, appears on TV, and she enjoys what she does especially the eating part. Each chapter consists of the story about Maggie and a copy of her article. Leading a fast moving life in New York City, she is a confident woman. Until a call from a movie actor, she truly believes that it is liberating to enjoy life being a size sixteen. She receives a consultant proposition and starts thinking about losing weight for the first time in her life. But, she has to keep it a secret. The many mentions of food and drinks in the book are mouthwatering even if the narration is chaotic and not that interesting.
Not Jemima J!.......2006-05-10
I very rarely ever give up on books, but I could only stick with this one for a little over a hundred pages. I was delighted to read in the other reviews that I wasn't the only one. The premise of the book is actually pretty good, it's just that they way it's written and the pacing is done quite poorly. The mixture of first-person narrative and inserted newspaper columns by the protagonist can be confusing at times. And the biggest relationship in the novel seems to be between Maggie and food...which turned me off. If I wanted to read a menu, I'd pick up an issue of Gourmet, not a chick lit book, thanks. The other thing that bothered me is that Maggie is so gung-ho about weight-acceptance until she wants to impress a man. I'm sure that's the motivating force for a lot of women, but shouldn't she be doing it for herself? I couldn't even begin to like Maggie, let alone side with her. I had a feeling that whole pages had been edited out of the text and perhaps it was in those that the key to what could have been a good novel lied.
Reads like a menu..........2006-04-18
I rarely put down a chick-lit book halfway through, but this book was just unbearable. I understand that Maggie likes food and everything, but the menu-like descriptions were just too much! This got dropped after about 100 pages...I just couldn't take it!
well it looked good on the cover.......2006-03-21
there was just something a little off about this book. A little spacey. For example, there's a part where the main character decides to give her assistant a camera. Then boom, the assistant has the camera and has pictures published.
I kept feeling like there were paragraphs missing from pages or something.
Product Description
Two lonely strangers, an out-of-town hotel...what could be the harm in a little extra-curricular activity? For Jean and Frank, those are famous last words. Before they can say "Was it good for you, honey?" a camera flashes, and they are trapped in a dirty cop's blackmail sting. And Fallon, the cop, ensnares the hapless cameraman for good measure. A bored suburban housewife, a computer consultant slumping into middle age, and a petty thief frantic to stay out on parole - it's no wonder Fallon and his cronies see the trio as the perfect patsies. But the blackmailers soon discover that underestimation is a dangerous game, as the patsies turn the tables, transforming themselves into that fearsome sword of retribution, The One-Night-Stand Gang.

Touching and True!.......2006-11-18
Fat Chance is an amazingly true, honest, and heart-warming book. Leslea Newman does an awesome job on capturing the emotions and pressures of teenage girls. This book's main character is Judi Leibowitz. Judi has three goals. 1) To decide what she wants to be when she grows up. 2) To get a boyfriend. 3) To loose some weight and become "skinny". Judi thinks that everything is going great when she becomes friends with the prettiest, skinniest, and most popular girl in school, Nancy Pratt. But she soon finds out what Nancy's "secret to success" is. Judi thinks that if Nancy does it, then she should, and she tries it out. So then, Judi becomes more of Nancy's look out, other than her friend. This "secret" gets Nancy and Judi into trouble, in more than one way, and Judi can't decide what to do. This book is very touching and true. I recommend it to anyone and everyone!
Couldn't put the book down...........2006-06-09
This book kept my attention & I kept reading on to find out what would happen next. It makes you realize what some teen girls are going through in their lives right now. Every teen girl should read this story because it teaches you some good lessons.
Fat Chance.......2006-01-13
Fat Chance by Leslea Newman
Life in middle school is already tough enough when you are an unsatisfied American teen like the main character Judy. Although the constant comments made by Tommy Aristo, a mom who won't even let you wear makeup, and growing up being the "fat girl" in the class doesn't make it much easier. So when Mrs. Roth the English teacher assigns the class to write in a journal periodically, Judy comes up with three goals in life that will supposedly solve all her problems: One, decide what she wants to be when she grows up; Two, get a boyfriend (preferably Richard Weiss); And three, lose weight because "Everyone knows guys like skinny girls, the skinnier the better (p. 3)". So with the help of her best friend Monica, Judy decides to do what she thinks will lead to happiness and popularity by becoming skinny. However while battling the numbers on the scale, she also discovers a risky way to stay thin, even if it that means threatening her health.
Leslea Newman did an excellent job by using realistic details and even some educational facts in this contemporary fiction novel. It has the perfect amount of drama, comedy, and even a bit of romance. She makes it easy to relate to because of the real life scenarios and issues almost all teenage girls go through, without sugar coating it or being too graphic like many other dramatic books do. It is a must read if you also liked books such as Are You There God, It's Me Margaret or Just As Long As We're Together by Judy Bloom. Newman and Bloom have a very similar writing style, however Newman usually provides a bit more detail and is more dramatic in her description. This book may take awhile to get into, but once hooked on Judy's personality and exciting turn of events, it is impossible to put down. I found myself intrigued by Newman's interesting style of simple word usage that really makes you think and feel as though you are there going through everything with Judy. Pre-teens and teenage girls everywhere would enjoy this easy read and should be required to read it in the seventh and eighth grades.
Not my favorite..........2005-11-30
This book is about a teenaged girl named Judi who develops bulimia while dealing with her extreme insecurities about her body and herself. Over the course of a few months, Judi realizes that another girl in her school, Nancy, is also sufferring from an eating disorder. After realizing that they have the same problem, Judi begins to emulate Nancy's behavior, and even "cover" for her while she throws up her lunch in the school bathroom.
Although the idea of this novel intrigued me, I didn't find it very original, or very realistic. Any reputable psychologist will tell you that people with eating disorders are almost never able to recover on their own, and have a greater chance of relapsing if they do. However, in Fat Chance, Judi simply stops throwing up after learning the dangers of eating disorders, deciding that losing weight isn't worth it. The problem with this idea, is that people with eating disorders are not generally concerned with the toll that they are taking on their bodies. Instead, they wish to continue the behaviors, and lie consistantly to cover it up.
Therefore, while there are some good aspects to the novel, I think that it presents a rather fluffy and sugarcoated idea of eating disorders. I think that if readers are looking for a more realistic view into the world of eating disorders, they should consider reading memiors like Stick Figure, or a psychotherapist's view, like The Best Little Girl in the World. These books better demonstrate the extreme complexities of eating disorders and their effects on those who suffer from them.
Unbelievably unrealistic .......2005-08-13
I read this book at Border's one day, and I liked it at first, but then I realized the book was extremely unrealistic. The soft ending is just stupid because the girl's problems are solved too easily. And how can someone who is bulimic just stop shoving a finger down her throat? I have never experienced eating disorders, but this book doesn't seem like anything that could happen in real life to a real person because it lacks to portray someone who is actually bulimic. That's my opinion.

Intelligent. Fascinating. Enjoyable........1999-01-25
I read the book because I've been a Stephen Fry fan for years and had not heard about the event the book describes. Gray writes clearly and beautifully, brings you with him into the theatre world as he tells his side of the story, with some (understandable) frustration but without recrimination. I intend to read more of Gray's work.
