Book Description
The student-friendly style of the book makes the content accessible without sacrificing either breadth or depth of coverage. The text's informal writing style, emphasis on problem solving, and state-of-the-art media package make this book an ideal fit at schools with large class sizes and a wide range of student abilities and backgrounds. The authors' goal was to create a complete package (text + media + supplements) which would challenge the better-prepared students and provide support to the lesser prepared students, giving ALL students a chance to succeed. 4e welcomes a new co-author Fred Senese, Frostburg State University, the creator of the award-winning General Chemistry Online and Ask Antoine (the most hit general chem web resource in the world with over 15 million hits/year). In addition to creating the new Brady/Senese website, he has also worked with Jim Brady to do significant revisions in the text.Customer Reviews:
excellent text.......2005-01-17
this text does stand out from the pack..........2004-03-13
The chapter on atomic structure is the only one I've seen that uses the central idea of quantum mechanics (wave-particle duality) as its central theme. It elegantly uses the de Broglie relation to tie wave and particle behaviors together, in the process naturally explaining where quantum numbers come from and why changes in electron confinement in a reaction can lead to color changes.
The thermodynamics chapter is also quite innovative, discarding the idea of entropy as a measure of disorder and instead stressing its connection with the number of ways a state can be realized. A simple model of heat flow from a hot object to a cold object makes the connection between probability and process spontaneity clear.
The approach for explaining and predicting molecular shapes is much better than that used in other texts, where students end up memorizing a large table of molecular shapes. This text starts by showing how electron domains arrange themselves the central atom, and then visualizes how the molecular geometry changes as bonding domains are replaced with nonbonding domains, one at a time. Students see the underlying idea without getting lost in a mass of detail and special cases.
I also like the "Thinking it through" problems at the end of each chapter, that emphasize critical and strategic thinking rather than simply getting a numerical answer. Ebbing and Chang don't have this feature. The "Test of facts and concepts" are cumulative tests that students can use to synthesize material from several chapters; I haven't seen another text with this feature, either.

Book Description
The images on the cover call attention to the relationship between macro observations and the intimate structure of chemical substances and the changes, both chemical and physical, that they undergo. Fireworks: One of the ingredients is phosphorus, a molecular form of which is believed to consist of linked tetrahedra of phosphorus atoms. The chemical reaction of phosphorus with oxygen is partly responsible for the spectacular show of light. Carbon: The element is found in several forms, including the familiar diamond and another, recently discovered, sooty substance that consists of soccer-ball shaped molecules, often referred to as "buckeyballs." Diamond is not the most stable form of carbon and is created from other forms of carbon at high temperatures and pressures deep within the earth. Acetylene torch: Cutting steel is possible because of the intense heat generated by the chemical reaction of acetylene with oxygen, a reaction between molecules of C_2H_2 and O_2 to give CO_2 and H_2O. Hot air balloon: The air that helps it rise is heated by the combustion of molecules of propane, each composed of three carbon and eight hydrogen atoms. Stormy weather: The evaporation of water serves to store energy provided by the sun. Subsequent condensation of the water vapor releases this energy and is the basis of all the weather systems on our planet.

Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471115444 |
Book Description
The Sea is a prestigious series with a history going back to the classic three volume treatise published by Wiley in 1962-63. Now, under the leadership of Allan Robinson, the series is again being extended with five new volumes currently planned that emphasizing the interaction of physical, chemical and biological oceanography. "Coastal Ocean Phenomena" is the first of these new volumes, and it deals with the general principles governing ocean phenomena in regions of shallower water near land. Processes such as tidal effects, global sea level changes, biological productivity, and sediment transport are analyzed. Models and methods are emphasized, including remote sensing, models of coastal ocean circulation, and data acquisition.Volume 10 presents the general principles, and volume 11 is organized geographically to presents the results of 35 of regional studies: Eastern North America, the Caribbean, the North Sea and Baltic, the Mediterranean Sea, and so forth.
Volume 10 is a readable and systematic introduction to coastal oceanography that is suitable for use with college courses, while volume 11 is a much larger reference work.

Integrated Photonics: Fundamentals
Ginés Lifante Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0470848685 |
Book Description
All integrated optical components and devices make use of "waveguides", where light is confined by total internal reflection. The elements in such "photonic chip" are interconnected through waveguides, and also the integrated optics components themselves are fabricated using waveguide configuration, such as couplers, switches, modulators, multiplexors, amplifiers and lasers, etc. These components are integrated in a single substrate, thus resulting in a compact and robust photonic device, which can be optically connected through optical fibres.
Download Description
"Integrated Photonics deals with the miniaturisation of photonic devices. These devices are suited to optical communication systems, such as connection with the high processing speed capability of the integrated photonic devices. There are an increasing number of integrated optical components and devices emerging from research laboratories on to the market. This book highlights the latest developments in photonic technology and includes fundamentals of integrated optics necessary to the understanding of the so-called ""photonic chips"", including the description of light propagation in complex waveguide structures. Written in a highly accessible and well-illustrated format, this book will serve as an advanced reference as well as an introductory text for those coming into contact with photonics for the first time. It will also be useful for application engineers who require an overview of the whole field of integrated optics. Topics covered include: The fundamentals of integrated photonics, encompassing an introduction to the topic. Review of the electromagnetic theory of light. Theory of integrated optic waveguides. Coupled mode theory, waveguide gratings. Light propagation in waveguides: the beam propagation method"

Optical waveguides in a nutshell.......2001-04-10
Okamoto's book is exceptionally well organized, and explains advanced and sometimes difficult concepts easily. The subject material and mathematical detail assume the reader to be well grounded in the basics of fiber optics, and able to work comfortably with differential, vector, and integral calculus. In addition, concepts such as Bessel functions, Maxwell's equations, and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation are used without introduction.
Although not formally organized in parts, the subject matter can be broadly divided into three categories. The first category consists of a basic treatment of waveguides in general, including the derivation of the functional forms of the eigenmodes in slab, rectangular, cylindrical, and coupled waveguides. I found the discussion on coupled mode theory particularly useful. Derivation of the eigenmodes is rigorous, with few simplifying assumptions. The equations are generally in Cartesian coordinates, making them useful for general-purpose numerical simulations, which are discussed in detail later in the book. Some of the more important equations should probably have been expressed in cylindrical coordinates as well, as this would make them more applicable for back-of-the envelope calculations. Making the simplifications is not hard, however, and there are blank pages at the end of the book for customizing it with these additional equations. Also lacking is a glossary of definitions of mathematical symbols used throughout the book.
The second category consists of specific, highly detailed and mathematically intense discussions about numerical methods used to solve the intensity distribution of light in inhomogeneous-core planar waveguides and fibers. Topics include the beam propagation method, staircase concatenation method, and finite element method. The discussions are sufficiently detailed that the capable and enthusiastic student should be able to write computer code that solves the propagation characteristics of virtually any arbitrary waveguide. Although commercial software already does this, the background presented in Okamoto's book will be useful to the user of such software, providing insight as to how the software works, and its limitations.
Straddling the discussion of numerical methods are discussions on nonlinear effects in optical fibers and planar lightwave circuits. The discussion on nonlinear optics is one of the best single-chapter treatments of the subject that I've seen, with quantitative explanations of solitons (light and dark), self-phase modulation (the optical Kerr effect), Raman scattering, and Brillouin scattering. There is also a brief discussion about optical amplification. Surprisingly, however, the book fails to discuss four-wave mixing. The chapter on planar lightwave circuits is one of the best quantitative descriptions of the arrayed waveguide grating I've ever seen. Overall, this is an excellent book that will be a valuable resource for scientists and engineers involved in fiber optics. I highly recommend it.
Great Intro to Optical Waveguides.......2000-10-02
Either case, it does belong on any serious optical waveguide designers shelf (there's a lot of material in this book).

Behindlings, the fifth novel from Nicola Barker, is a welcome return, both in mood and in geography, to the gothic terrain of her Impac Prize winner Wide Open. Set in parochial Canvey Island, Essex, this book is inventive, funny, unnerving, and often magnificently strange.Barker's Canvey (once dubbed "Candy Island" by Daniel Defoe) is, with its Wimpy Bar, dreary pubs, and long-cherished grudges, rumours, and secrets, a quintessentially English small town. Its emotionally damaged population is augmented by the "Behindlings" of the title, a gaggle of oddballs who follow, or more precisely obsessively stalk, the novel's enigmatic central character, Wesley. The architect of a chocolate company-funded treasure hunt, author of a pseudo-Nietzschean walking guide and the man behind the daring theft of an antique pond, he is a rather malevolent Pied Piper. Part Alvin Toffler-quoting, peripatetic environmental visionary, part immoral (and maybe downright evil) fraudster, he's also notorious for feeding the fingers on his right hand to an eagle owl "in an act of penance" for accidentally killing his brother.
Barker has always had a penchant for the surreal, and occasionally here both plot and characterization can get swamped in flights of absurdist imagination. She is perhaps too fond of the elaborate simile. The clackety, clackety of the "like" and "as" of her prose style is, from time to time, a little exasperating. Despite this, her narrative is so alluringly, so charmingly odd, bristling with puzzles and etymological games and full of wonderfully, devilishly comic touches, that it's easy to ignore its minor flaws. --Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
Wesley, spurting with kinetic energy, nasty wit, and kindness to animals, ought to be a star. Or so it seems to those who nip at his heels, turn up everywhere he goes, and lie in wait for him around every corner. They are his followers -- he calls them Behindlings. And they make quite an ensemble, with their own questionable intentions, irritating habits, and weird manners. But they bury all disagreement in the common pursuit of their prize, their Wesley.
Then there are those who simply stay put. Catherine Turpin lies defiantly in the bed she makes for herself while, outside, her failings are broadcast widely, painted on walls, even. When one of Wesley's newest followers, Jo Bean, turns out to be more interested in confronting Catherine than sticking with the behindlings, plots that have been twisted up come undone.
With Behindlings, the inimitable Nicola Barker takes a character who is perhaps her most compelling creation to date, and lets him run off with her readers.
