With the development of synthetic organic chemistry techniques in the early 19th century the world of synthetic FandF materials began and expanded, but it has not totally replaced natural FandF. A growing segment of the public prefers natural foods to foods containing artificial additives, and will pay a premium for natural foods. While modern synthetic methods permit the economical production of artificial FandF on a large scale, the natural FandF industry remains important. Why is this so? How do the chemical, biological, and agricultural sciences support the natural FandF industry? What is the state of current natural FandF research? These are questions this volume attempts to address. Even considering only the value of FandF derived from essential oils, natural FandF constitute approximately a $2 billion annual business. The impact of FandF is best appreciated when you consider that a flavor or fragrance typically contributes only a very small part, both in cost and volume, to a finished product. Many analytical tools available do not have a detector that is as sensitive to taste or odor as a human (or many animals for that matter). The challenge for researchers is to sift FandF information from all the data obtained from the various analytical techniques. The intent of this book is to give the reader and appreciation for the many facets of the chemistry, analysis and production of natural flavors and fragrances. It is a field where each one of us who can smell and taste are active participants. New foods, plants, processes, packages and aromas are developed each day. Keeping researchers abreast of the many new facets of the natural FandF field have led to development of this chapter and the ACS symposium that served as the basis of this book.

Thought it would go into detail about the fragrances. Rather, it's a listing of thousands of fragrances under their particular type (woody, mossy, etc.). Useful for that reason, but not useful if you want to know any back story about a particular fragrance.

When I purchased this book I had no idea of all the historic facts in it. I have learned so much about the houses and fragrances. I reccomend this book to anyone in the fragrance industory or anyone interested in the fragrance world. So much historic information in this volumne.

This is a beautiful book and a great read on the legends and stories behind the great perfumes and perfume houses. I learned more about the perfumes, the packaging, the designers, the design culture in France, etc. etc. etc. than I ever would have expected. There are some pretty good descriptions of the scents themselves, together with triangle diagrams of head, heart and bottom notes.

I would have liked to see more "how to buy perfume" information, such as the different formulations of EDT, EDP, etc., and maybe some more comparative information on the various fragrances.

This extrordinary book covers the most impacting fragrances on both the public and the industry. From conception to development to launches, it gives a thorough history of these wonderscents.Each chapter is a spesific scent, covering the designer, the fragrance creators, the bottle development and all the dirty little secrets of how they got to the top. The book thoroughly covers 45 perfumes (I think he missed a few) including greats like Chanel #5, Shalimar,Anais Anais and Angel. Mr. Edwards also gives a composition rundown, But this is a little confusing if you are not familliar with his Fragrance Manual. Required reading for any fragrance nut.

At first glance, Perfume Legends is a beautifully illustrated coffee table book packed with fascinating stories about the creation and evolution of some of the greatest fragrances of the century. Dig deeper and you discover it's a valuable reference tool for anybody involved in the fashion or beauty business. Perfume is an art form, it captures the spirit of the times, and it's an eye-opening exercise to trace the evolution of fragrance through the history of the 20th century. It's also intriguing to read about the scientific breakthroughs that gave rise to new perfume notes, which greatly expanded the perfumers' repertoire. Michael Edwards obviously knows his subject intimately and he manages to share his knowledge in a readable way. He has clearly spent years researching the true stories behind the myths. The clever combination of scholarship, anecdote and brilliant pictorial material (some of it never published before) makes this book a must for anyone interested in the subject. Even people who just love fragrance will get a lot out of Perfume Legends. It's the only truly comprehensive reference on the subject of French female fragrance classics that I've been able to find. I heartily recommend it. It is ironic that Michael Edwards, who lives in Australia, was born in Africa and educated in England, seems to have beaten the French at their own game. They must be furious.

The purpose of this book is to link together knowledge obtained in the observation of mud volcanism and local seismicity. Geological, Seismological, Geophysical and Geochemical parameters are considered. The book represents the modern state of the art after many decades of observations. The book fills an editorial gap and improves knowledge in the fields of natural risks and energy resources. Mud volcanism occurs both onshore and offshore in many places of the world. Mud volcanic phenomena have been to date described by local monographs or by articles published in scientific journals and no books were published on topics highlighting the link among mud volcanism, geodynamics and seismicity. Mud volcanism has been recognized to be generally related to hydrocarbon deposits, seismotectonic activity and to orogenic belts. In spite of the large amount of data collected by scientists working in different disciplines - geophysics, geochemistry, structural geology, marine geology, hydrocarbon geosciences etc., a comprehensive and complete understanding of mud volcanic phenomena is hard to find in current scientific literature. Finally a book that presents up-to-date knowledge breaking traditional disciplinary walls.

Models for the mechanical behavior of porous media introduced more than 50 years ago are still relied upon today, but more recent work shows that, in some cases, they may violate the laws of thermodynamics. In The Thermophysics of Porous Media, the author shows that physical consistency requires a unique description of dynamic processes that involve porous media, and that new dynamic variables-porosity, saturation, and megascale concentration-naturally enter into the large-scale description of porous media. The new degrees of freedom revealed in this study predict new dynamic processes that are not associated with compressional motions. The book details the construction of a Lorentz invariant thermodynamic lattice gas model and shows how the associated nonrelativistic, Galilean invariant model can be used to describe flow in porous media. The author develops the equations of seismic wave propagation in porous media, the associated boundary conditions, and surface waves. He also constructs the equations for both immiscible and miscible flows in porous media and their related instability problems. The implications of the physical theory presented in this book are significant, particularly in applications in geophysics and the petroleum industry. The Thermophysics of Porous Media offers a unique opportunity to examine the dynamic role that porosity plays in porous materials.

This book is full with very useful information and detailed foundamental explainations on the statistical thermodynamics. I think that this is very useful book to the undergraduate or graduate students majoring in mechanical engineering. However, it is also full with many mistakes of equations. If those mistakes are corrected, it will be certainly a good text.

This is a great book for anyone that is taking a materials statistical thermo class or just a thermo class with an emphasis on materials. There's a good section devoted to crystal thermodynamics, that's quite useful. It also covers magnetic materials, superconductivity, and real gases and liquids. Overall, it's a very well written book that takes you from basic concepts to very advanced ones, without loosing one in the process.

My name is Woodrow and I'm in this dang book. Let me tell you it's all a pack of lies. Most of the stuff Reavis wrote about me NEVER EVEN HAPPENED! Well, SOME of it may have happened, but I don't think he needs to be airing all of our dirty longjohns out in public. Doc, Wrong Willie, Jerry Wayne and all the rest of us agree Reavis needs some kind of therapy... and fast. And I don't mean the kind of therapy he's been getting from Charlie Daniels' brother, Jack, if you know what I mean.

Set aside a couple of hours and read this book non-stop. You won't have a choice because you cannot put it down until you have finished. One story just makes you hungry for another. Caution: do not attempt to read one of the stories to another person, because you will be unable to speak, having fallen into uncontrollable spasms of laughter. I tried to read one to my wife and we both fell on the floor howling.

This book appeals to outdoor persons of course, but the humor will not be lost on anyone.

Eat Gas Now by R. Wortham brings two things together that makes me giggle: first, a group of hunting buddies who enjoy each other's company probably more than hunting (it's a male bonding thing); and second, the diner that grace's any small town where local's sip coffee and trade yarns. This group reminds me of my 'lunch bunch' who just have a funny way of looking at things. I highly recommend this book.
