                  Book Description

The interaction between atoms and electromagnetic fields is an area of central importance to the investigation of fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics. The authors provide an introduction to the theory concerning this interaction by describing the different forms of the interaction and dealing with how these interactions lead to the formation of dressed states, in the presence of vacuum fluctuations as well as in the presence of external fields. They also cover the role of dressed atoms in quantum measurement theory and the physical interpretation of vacuum radiative effects. Treating a key field on the boundary between quantum optics and quantum electrodynamics, the book will be of great use to graduate students, as well as to established experimentalists and theorists, in either of these areas.

'Atom-Field Interactions and Dressed Atoms' is a useful book for graduate students and reseachers in the field of Quantum Optics. The interaction between atoms and electromagnetic fields is a research area which demands strong backgound in mathematics and numerical simulations. From this point of view the authors give a very good approach of the subject. Furthermore, modern topics in Atom Optics are highlighted. This book could be a guide for researchers dealing with Atom Optics.

Born in Alabama in 1915, Baptist preacher turned underground artist Howard Finster claims to have had his first vision at the age of three. Inspired by the word of God, visitations from the dead, and religious visions, Finster has described himself as a stranger from another world and a divine messenger. His mission: to save the world with his art. With such titles as "American Devils Are Very Friendly" and "Judge No Man by Yourself," Finster's obsessive paintings, constructions, and sculptures have been exhibited all over the world, from Los Angeles to SoHo to the Venice Biennale. The text, transcribed from hundreds of hours of taped interviews, is at once disturbing and fascinating.

                  Book Description

The personality of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)-a 19th-century combination of dropout, rebel, and genius-and the source of his enormous achievement continue to fascinate people as deeply as his vivid, wildly painted canvasses of sunflowers, peasants, and starry nights. In this first and only in-depth study of the relationship between van Gogh's psychological development and his art, Albert J. Lubin, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (Emeritus) at Stanford University and a practicing psychoanalyst, draws on the tremendous wealth of information available about van Gogh, to explore his personal conflicts in the context of the forces that molded him: familial, historical, cultural, religious, artistic, and literary. Dr. Lubin approaches van Gogh not as a mysterious mix of sick eccentric and martyred artist, but as a complete man who transformed his suffering into a phenomenal body of work. Lubin's daring psychological insights and art criticism allow us to better understand, and more fully appreciate, van Gogh's artistic triumph over his inner torment.

2 out of 5 stars A Gigglefest of Freudian Fallacies.......2004-06-11

Pure, unintentional, Freudian-style hilarity! This book is what happens when modern psychology ignores modern neuropathy. I was laughing until tears streamed down my face when I read the passage that states that Vincent's early work, (i.e. the Potato Eaters) was his superego rebelling against his mother's "Dutch cleanliness" and her refusal to allow the infant Vincent to smear feces on the walls of his nursery which then affected his pallete choice as an adult. Brown, yep. OK, I'm about to start laughing again . . . (whew!)

Vincent van Gogh was extraordinarily adept at introspection, and through reading his body of correspondence a student of psychology may glean an idea of van Gogh's state of agitation and alienation, and I recommend that a van Gogh scholar, or anyone with a genuine desire to better understand and empathize with van Gogh, read his correspondence instead of this book.

This book fails to lend any original - or even modern - insights, it is entirely too subjective, mired in neo-Freudian and occasionally, Jungian, conjecture, it lacks Gestalt, and works to distort and narrow the reader's perception of Vincent's gift as it related to his sustained neuropsychiatric state.

But, if you want to laugh (and laugh and laugh and laugh) at one scholar's attempt at deconstructing art and epileptiform neurological affect via Freud's ridiculous personality-based suppositions, read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Once past the first chapter, really great book!.......2002-05-10

I really liked the perspective of looking at Van Gogh from a psychological view point. However, the first chapter is very dense with names of paintings and their deeper meaning. The author does much better in the subsequent chapters trying to discover Vincent the man.
A must read for anyone trying to understand Van Gogh!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Van Gogh Biography I Can Recommend.......2001-12-11

Many biographies and abbreviated collections of Vincent's volumnous and passionate letters to his brother Theo have been published in recent years. The only one that I can recommend though is "Stranger on the Earth : A Psychological Biography of Vincent Van Gogh" by Albert J. Lubin, which provides a fascinating insight into Vincent's life and work. The author examines Vincent's fragile personality with a sensible balance of clinical observation and human compassion. The title "stranger on earth" is an apt description of how Vincent apparently felt about his life. I read this book cover to cover in a few days (a page-turner) and came away with an appreciative sense of Van Gogh as a complex personality driven alternately by great passion and great depression. A tragic yet very human story.

                  5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-06-18

Unlike most any biography out there, this book yeilds new insights to the man and his art.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, honorable, beautiful.......1999-09-28

The elegance with which he, Stone, makes manifest the life of this magnificent artist is breathtaking at times. This is not just the work to which all biographical material on Van Gogh is measured, but one of the biographical novels by which all other biographies and biographical novels should be. It is imposiible to not get sucked into the narrative and feel what it was like to be in the company of men who are poised, with their gifts, to change the way we look at the world and ourselves. Nor is it possible to not come away sympathisizing, or even feeling a kinship with the deeply troubled genius whose art bares witness to the human soul. I suggest you read this book if you are interested in anything regarding creativity. Period.

Ah, the fish-out-of-water tale. In A Stranger in the Earth, debut novelist Marcel Theroux drops fresh-out-of-the-sticks Horace Littlefair into a rough-and-tumble London populated by all manner of dreamers, conspirators, and fakes. Once he's settled and gainfully employed, the eye-opening that Horace experiences constitutes the novel's comic arc. And his job at his uncle's newspaper, The South London Bugle, is a great narrative device, setting up a series of humorous encounters with monomaniacs (and just plain maniacs) of various stripes. There's Trevor Diamond, the animal-rights activist devoted to the preservation of the urban fox. There's Horace's Scrabble-obsessed landlord, Mr. Narayan, who wins his games using words like rewoo. In these and an abundance of other secondary characters, Theroux's craft shines. You can't sum up their relationships in single sentences without sounding like you're setting up a punch line: What do you get when you cross a politician with a lady of the evening? What does an animal-rights activist have to do with a gardening columnist? To Theroux's credit, the answer to both of these questions is: Quite a lot, actually.

What's lost in the shuffle of who-did-what-to-whom is Horace himself, who comes off more as a surrogate reader than a fully realized character. While those called up from central casting steal the show, he remains somewhat muted, more often a witness than a participant in the madness. His moments of self-reflection appropriately encounter this kind of sentiment:

And for all his conscientious interest in the world,
and the business of getting up and going to work each
day, he was still aware of a hollowness inside him
that he couldn't fill up with newsprint.
One of Theroux's great talents lies in the rubbish coming out of his characters' mouths. If you never thought it possible for anyone other than Austin Powers to utter "chap," "bloke," and "bird" within the space of a single paragraph, look no further than A Stranger in the Earth, old boy. At times sounding like a Pygmalion by way of Monty Python with a detour into Lewis Carroll's wonderland, these characters can't seem to shut up, and their voices are music to readers' ears. --Ryan Boudinot

                  Book Description

Twenty-two-year-old Horace Littlefair travels from the village of Great Much to the big city-London town-if not to make it rich, then at least to make a living working for his great uncle at the local newspaper. Unprepared, underpaid, and overdressed, he is plunged instead into the discombobulating world of love, racism, rabies, blackmail, political intrigue . . . and Scrabble. Horace is out of step with the rest of the world, threatened by impending disaster wherever he turns. But he is helped along by several unlikely and unusual friendships. And so Horace stumbles to adapt, to love, to produce good copy, and to get the scoop behind Barnaby Colefax's campaign to save the urban fox. Marvelous storytelling from a gifted young writer.

                  3 out of 5 stars OK, but.............2001-08-09

Not so bad for a first book, at least it is readable even when a little confusing. The author isn't really interested in his characters, picks them up and drops them without much explanation. The books doesn't come to a conclusion, it just ends. It is hard to understand the characters, they are stick figures and need more flesh. Of course, when I read the senior Theroux's books, I never really understand why he does anything, either. They seem to want to share their views of the world, but nothing of themselves. This is true of all of Paul Theroux's book, including my favorite, his trip through China in the Iron Rooster. Seems to be true of the son, also. If the main character reflects the author, I get the feeling he feels out of step with the world, but doesn't much give a damn about it, preferring to wait until the rest of the world gets in line with him.

4 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned Fun.......2000-03-27

One night, bored, I went to see Marcel Theroux read from his debut novel at a local bookstore. I enjoyed the old-fashioned wit of his excerpts so much I ended up buying a copy--something I am not prone to do. It took half a year, but when I finally got around to reading it, it was exactly what I expected: a gentle, witty tale of a country bumpkin's move to London to work for his great-uncle's newspaper. There are a boatload of supporting characters who are all utterly believable, with their own quirks and entertaining agendas. One small criticism is the silliness of character names, which slightly detracts from the overall assuredness of the writing. There is a lot going on, but it all resolves more or less satisfactorily, as is the norm in fish-out-of-water stories of this ilk. The one area that could have used a bit more attention was the history of the hero's grandfather. A promising debut.

                  3 out of 5 stars It's quite good--until the ending........2000-01-16

Unlike the reader from Philly I found Marcel Theroux to be a gifted young writer with a flair for comic setups, perfect descriptions and an ear for dialogue. This book, be warned, has quite a lot going on in it and to Theroux's credit (not his uncle) he manages to wrap things up--or attempt to wrap things up--while keeping the other balls in the air. Therein was my problem with the book: It was too short, abbreviated. A better book could be had if a few of the plot threads were dismissed. Of course, half the fun was watching the author spin the threads out. And like one of the other reviewers said, you never know what's going to come next. It's a close stab at "Lucky Jim" in my opinion, but ultimately not The Greatest Book of All Time because of the inability of the author to successfully finish the book. Would I buy another of his books? Maybe. Would I give a new book of his consideration? Definitely.

                  1 out of 5 stars What?.......1999-09-26

I just finished this book and I have no idea what it was about. I didn't care about any of the characters, and it seems, neither did the author. Also, a bit more than I cared to know about foxes.

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Debut From A Writer Who Should Do Better.......1999-08-24

Marcel Theroux's debut novel, A Stranger In The Earth, attempts a humorous portrayal of contemporary London and its society, and on some pages it succeeds. Unfortunately, the novel also contains stick-figured characters, wooden dialogue, and stilted sentence structure.

Theroux's main character, Horace Littlefair, and his support cast: the landlord, Mr. Narayan, the uncle, Derwent Boothby, all come across as hollow puppets, but the narrator pulling the strings has not the power to pull off a good story. There is no lyrical prose here, no memorable passages, just page after page of Britpop slang without substance.

One of Theroux's contemporaries, Will Self, uses artfully mannered prose and dialogue to touch on similar subject manner, such as animal rights. But Theroux's Littlefair is no Simon Dykes (the simian fine artist of Self's Great Apes). Indeed, Littlefair is a less-talented but well-connected member of a successful family; his uncle provides him with a career, in this case, newspaper journalism. Based on this book's frequent allusion to family connections, one has to ask if the elder Paul influenced the arrival of his son's novel on the bookstore shelves. In some ways, A Stranger In The Earth reads as a confession, one that says: "Yes."

                  Book Description

This richly illustrated book to accompany the PBS science documentary Intimate Strangers: Unseen Life on Earth combines vivid, descriptive images from the series and original artwork with the compelling story of the world of microbes and their role in the Earth's ecosystem. The authors have built upon the series content to offer a more comprehensive view of our relationship with the planet's tiniest inhabitants.

Targeted to a general audience, the book's lively style will engage parents and their children and teachers and their students, along with other members of the science-interested public, putting the vitally important role of the microbial world into stories and terms familiar to the reader.

Rarely, oh so rarely has science been explained to the public with such zestful clarity. Not since Paul de Kruif's "Microbe Hunters" has anyone produced as exciting an exposition of how microbes and humans interact. The writers flavor the text with titillating examples, evocative metaphors, and thought-provoking questions. This book constitutes a passport to a whole wondrous realm, not just a single destination.

                  5 out of 5 stars a wonderful Christmas fable.......2003-12-02

Another simply told tale from Ian Wallace. His text is spare, straightforward, and compelling. The illustrations, like so many of his, are evocative of place and time, with enough detail to make us feel the homeliness of the house and its inhabitants. The warmth of lamplight spills into each scene, guarding us and the characters of brother and sister and mother against the harsh cold of the out of doors, really of the world. The arrival of the stranger out of the cold, his magic tricks, his presentation of gifts, and his departure happen so fluidly that we, too, are caught up in the surprise and delight of his visit. The best of his gifts brings this story to its close, and we want to read it again to recapture the magic.

Colat Debrot's "My Black Sister" and Boeli van Leeuwen's are two pivotal works from the early period of postcolonial Dutch-language fiction from the Dutch Caribbean. Each portrays different aspects of the predicament of postcolonial identity, gender, race, and politics in the vein best known as "tropic existentialism." Founding Fictions of the Dutch Caribbean is suitable for courses on Caribbean literature and postcolonial literature, and will be of great interest to readers of fiction in general.
