Book Description
Fully updated-the classic comprehensive introduction to color technology
The Third Edition of Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology combines the clarity and ease of use of earlier editions with two decades of advancement in the theory and technology of color. Defining color as "a certain kind of light, its effect on the human eye, or (most important of all) the result of this effect in the mind of the viewer," the book offers detailed coverage of color, colorants, the coloring of materials, and reproducing the color of materials through imaging.
While retaining important material on the color technology of paints, plastics, textiles, and other materials, the Third Edition features in-depth coverage of computer-generated color, digital image capture, desktop color printing, and color management-achieving color fidelity among scanners, digital cameras, and other color imaging devices. The new edition of Principles of Color Technology offers expanded coverage that includes:
* Measuring color quality-a new chapter describes the principles and applications of setting instrumental color tolerances
* Mathematics of color technology-a new appendix presents principles of color technology using mathematics
* Color modeling-additional material covers CRT displays and color printing
Supplemented with copious numerical examples, graphs, and illustrations that clarify and explain complex material, as well as side bars that present technical details in a well-organized, accessible manner, this excellent and exciting introduction for newcomers to the field is also a valuable reference for experienced color technologists, color specialists, chemical and industrial engineers, computer scientists, research scientists, and mathematicians interested in color.

Student Review of B&S Principles of Color Technology.......2001-10-14
The latest edition of Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology is a complete rewrite. The author's use of in-text examples and "back to principles" appendix facilitate understanding of the concepts. The range of color science conepts (from basic colorimetry to an end-to-end color imaging system) make it a must-have for the color science student to the experienced color professional.

Book Description
Since its inception in 1966, the series of numbered volumes known as
Semiconductors and Semimetals has distinguished itself through the careful selection of well-known authors, editors, and contributors. The"Willardson and Beer"Series, as it is widely known, has succeeded in publishing numerous landmark volumes and chapters. Not only did many of these volumes make an impact at the time of their publication, but they continue to be well-cited years after their original release. Recently, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the University of California at Berkeley joined as a co-editor of the series. Professor Weber, a well-known expert in the field of semiconductor materials, will further contribute to continuing the series' tradition of publishing timely, highly relevant, and long-impacting volumes. Some of the recent volumes, such as
Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Imperfections in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, High-Speed Heterostructure Devices,Oxygen in Silicon, and others promise indeed that this tradition will be maintained and even expanded.Reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of the field that the series covers, the volumes in
Semiconductors and Semimetals have been and will continue to be of great interest to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and device engineers in modern industry.

Dangerous Beauty - Life and Death in Africa: True Stories From a Safari Guide
ASIN: 093162536X |
Book Description
The incredible story of a 3,000 mile bicycle trek across the world's largest stretch of sand--the Kalahari and Namib Deserts of Southern Africa. The author relates his fantastic experiences--stalked by lions, charged by a herd of elephants, and his encounters with poisonous snakes, to name a few. He also tells of his numerous observations and experiences in living and teaching in Botswana for three years. These include his marriage to the daughter of a local witch-doctor.
Customer Reviews:
A "true" adventure........2000-12-18
Across African Sand is a an excellent example of what true adventure books should be. I emphasize the word "true" not simply to point out that events in the book are factual but to distinguish this work from books describing stunts. (To me a stunt is a once-in-a-lifetime event, filled with harum-scarum that a more skilled traveler would have avoided and usually detailing a significant departure from the main stream of the writer's life.) By contrast, Across African Sand comes across as the logical continuation of Phil Deutschle's career as a teacher and introspective traveler. Prior to embarking on his solo bicycle ride across the Kalahari and Namib deserts, Deutschle has spent three years living and teaching in an out-of-the way village in Botswana. An accomplished linguist, he has become fluent-to-conversant with several local languages, including that of the !Kung (Bushman) people, and thus we learn more of African life and thought than we would at the mercy of a more casual traveler. Deutschle clearly enjoys the company of the various people he falls in with along the way but also relishes the solitude which is such a significant part of his journey. Part of the success of the book is its skillful interweaving of events in the course of his cycling trek with flashbacks to his life as a teacher in a traditional Botswana village. Dimi Press has done a creditable job of putting the book together and its illustrations are great. I wholeheartedly recommend this as an interesting and insightful story of travel and adventure.
Highly recommended for bicycling enthuaists........2000-06-05
Across African Sand: Journey Of A Witch Doctor's Son-In-Law is the true life adventure story of Phil Deutschle's bicycle trip across 3,000 miles of African landscape. Along the way Phil was stalked by lions, charged by a herd of enraged elephants, fell in love with (and married) the daughter of a prominent witch doctor. Across African Sand is a compelling, engaging, fascinating biographical travelogue that relates an account of Phil's five years in Botswana (southern Africa) told in the form of flashbacks while he bicycles over the harsh Kalahari and Namib deserts, negotiating difficult African terrain, including soft sand and mud, during the course of his three month cycling adventure. Across African Sand is highly recommended for bicycling enthusiasts, armchair adventurers, and anyone who has ever yearned to travel the world, meet new people, and have adventures of their own!
Excellent, exciting reading!.......2000-05-04
This portrait will also fit neatly in travel sections: itportrays a bicyclist's journey across two deserts as he bikes throughsand, dodging lions and elephants and visiting remote parts of outback Africa. The adventure and observations of life in Botswana make for an excellent and exciting read.
Advernture for Armchair Reader.......2000-04-28
I bought this book for my husband. While he was reading it he kept interrupting my reading to tell me about what was happening in his book. In self defense, I picked it up as soon as he finished and immediately found myself transported to Africa. This book is much more than the story of the author's trip across the Kalahri on a bicycle. He writes about the people he meets and tells of their culture, the politics and economy of each group. He possesses interpersonal skills that allow him to relate to all sorts of people quickly and he writes about them with affection and respect. He describes plant and animal life along the way. Through flashbacks he tells of his earlier life and recent experience as a teacher in Africa. During the lonely stretches of his trip he wonders about his need to wander the globe. My husband said when he finished the book, "I've learned more about Africa from this book than all of the other books on the subject, put together" I agree, and I learned a great deal about life in general and men in particular from it.
an unread review.......2000-03-24
I think that Phil Deutschle is a wonderful author, having to put up with all of that stress of how to fit in time to writ after or at the time of his experiences. And just being able to adapt to a community so quick ; but at the same time working.

Recovering from the realisation that his honeymoon was not quite as he had anticipated, Simon Sparrow can at least look forward to a life of tranquillity and order as a respectable homeowner with a new wife. But that was before his old friend Dr Grimsdyke took to using their home as a place of refuge from his various misdemeanours...and especially from the incident with the actress which demanded immediate asylum. Parting: A Handbook for Spiritual Care Near the End of Life
ASIN: 0974524522 |
Book Description
People die the way they live, showing the same weaknesses and strengths in illness as they did in health. This is what Joseph Sacco learned when his ailing father died from lung cancer in 1988. A recent Resident in a Bronx hospital, Dr. Sacco was well-versed in the technical aspects of death, but had never personally confronted it. He was, at first, frustrated by his father's refusal to accept lung cancer and impending death. Finally, Dr. Sacco confronted his own sincerity, both as caretaker of his father, and as a doctor. His insight came too late to help his father, but he asks readers to question the popular conception that acceptance is necessary for a good death. The final lesson of the book is that caretakers are responsible for encouraging the dying in their own path, rather than to impose any preconceptions.

Customer Reviews:
Suffers from poor editing.......2006-04-05
Eoin Colfer's comment "I love this book" on the cover was all the recommendation I needed to open it. Unfortunately, despite a lot of well-written pages, Martin Booth's non-fiction writing overtakes great portions of the story and the reader's subjected to boring didactic ramblings. The antagonist is ridiculous and totally unbelievable which ruins the story. I gave it to my daughter to read to get a more age-related opinion, but she enjoyed it less than I did. I feel sorry that Mr Booth was let down by a dreadful editing job, when there was a lot of potential in this premise.
Uber Good.......2005-07-03
I love this book because it seems so real. I love how it deals with a modern setting rather than the boring Harry Potter world with nothing to do but read and write. Actually, I think it's better than Harry Potter. I can't wait to read the sequal.
Yawn.......2005-05-14
A child lives inside the walls of a families new house. Do you want to read on NO!!! He knows "magic" which he calls alchemistry. Who cares Not ME!!!! Why does it get three stars, it ilearned a little about thingd that i am never going to use in everyday life
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoyable, quick read!.......2005-01-08
I really enjoyed the start to this new series. I am an adult and I did not feel like I was reading a children's book. In fact I learned a lot of information, like what a ha-ha is (it's not a laugh by the way :) Pip, Tim and Sebastian are bright kids (even though technically Sebastian is not a kid). My only complaint is that is was too short for me. While for a children's book it might be a good length, as an adult reading it, I have come to expect longer because of the Harry Potter series and books like Eragon. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages, especially if you like fantasy and magic!
Semi-qualified "Doctor".......2004-12-23
Martin Booth tries for a more sophisticated magical journey than Harry Potter, in "Doctor Illuminatus: The Alchemist's Son Part I." Taking a pretty typical fantasy good vs. evil story, Booth weaves in history and alchemy, but his handling of the plot is rather clumsy.
Pip and her know-it-all twin Tim have just moved into a rambling English country estate, far from the pop-culture world they formerly had. Then scrabbling noises inside the wall are revealed to be something else entirely -- a boy called Sebastian emerges, claiming to be the son of the man who built the house. He's also the son of an alchemist, and he's hibernated for centuries.
Sebastian reveals that he is not the only alchemist who has hibernated to the modern day -- an evil enemy named de Loudeac has also survived to the present day. Now de Loudeac is stalking the kids, and is building a homunculus -- a soulless automaton that will do whatever he wants. It's up to Pip, Tim and Sebastian to stop him.
If anyone thought that the latest Harry Potter novels were oh-so-dark, then they will be scared witless by this dark fantasy. Booth takes a step into nastier territory, with severed limbs, undead hippies, and a cameo by Satan. And he takes some history (medieval and alchemical) to base the entire plot on.
But Booth does have a slightly clumsy way of writing fantasy. Sebastian launches into long lectures every chapter or so, and Booth doesn't manage to make them interesting. And the homunculus is built up as a big threat, then gets toasted within a page of appearing. However, he has a pretty solid writing style, with plenty of details and creepiness.
Pip and Tim are fairly good heroes -- a little passive for my taste, but their gradual adjustment to a world of alchemists and magic is well done. Pip in particular is a good lead character, with plenty of promise. Sebastian is not so likable. He's a rather annoying know-it-all, and he never once acts like a twelve-year-old.
Martin Booth's "Doctor Illuminatus: The Alchemist's Son Part I" has some deep flaws, but it also has quite a bit of promise for Booth's future alchemy books. Worth checking out, for patient readers of dark books.
