Born in Vienna, Alfred Bader fled to England at the age of fourteen, ten months before the outbreak of World War II. Although a Jewish refugee from the Nazis, he was interned in 1940, along with other 'enemy aliens', and sent to a Canadian prisoner-of-war camp.
Today, Bader is one of the most respected men in his field. In this heartwarming book, he tells the fascinating story of how he made good in the land of opportunity, the United States.
It was a case of hard study and hard work. Obtaining his release in 1941, he was accepted at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he studied engineering chemistry. There followed a fellowship in organic chemistry at Harvard. He worked in Milwaukee as a research chemist for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and in 1951 co-founded Aldrich, which today, as Sigma-Aldrich, is the world's largest supplier of research chemicals.
He spent forty years building Aldrich's distinctive reputation, and the extraordinary story of how he was eventually thrown off the board of Sigma-Aldrich will be of key interest to people in the chemical industry worldwide as well as to students of business.
After leaving Sigma-Aldrich, he continued a fruitful career as an art collector and dealer, and he has some very pertinent and amusing things to say about the art world.
Alfred Bader and his family have earned a reputation as generous benefactors, notably in the fields of chemistry, education and Jewish interests. Bader's personal philanthropy has been particularly directed toward helping students od chemistry and art history. He recently gave L6,000,000 to Queen's University to purchase and renovate Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex (the home of the old Royal Greenwich Observatory) - one more 'thank-you" to the Canadian institution that had enabled him to take the first steps on the road to success, so entertainingly described in this book.

Problem Solving in Soil Mechanics is primarily designed as a supplement to Soil Mechanics: Basic Concepts and Engineering Applications, but can be used as an independent problem solving text, since there is no specific reference to any equation or figure in the main book. This book is written for university students taking first-degree courses in civil engineering, environmental and agricultural engineering. Its main aim is to simulate problem solving learning as well as facilitating self-teaching. The special structure of the book makes it possible to be used in two, three and four year undergraduate courses in soil mechanics. However, as new and advanced topics are included, the book will also be a valuable resource for the practicing professional engineer. This book is written for readers that have prior knowledge in soil mechanics; however, necessary basic information is included in each worked example.

Quantum Kinetics in Transport and Optics of Semiconductors deals with the quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultrashort laser-pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for quantum high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to nonequilibrium Green function techniques. It is much more readible and up-to-date than Kadanoff and Baym's "Quantum Statistical Mechanics".

It's an excellent textbook for understanding steel's unique nature. The book comprises a basic and intermediate level, and is considered a "must have" for all those surrounding metallurgy. It's an excellent reference manual for later information too.

Introductory chapters cover the basic physics required to describe the microstructure of materials and their interaction with various types of radiation. Much of the hardware involved in these techniques is dependent on a vacuum environment, so a full chapter is devoted to this topic. Characterization techniques are then divided on the basis of the interrogating radiation, with separate chapters dealing with optical and x-ray techniques, electron microscopy and spectroscopy, and ion and particle microscopy and spectroscopy. Within each chapter, material is given covering the radiation sources, the construction and layout of instrumentation and the analysis of data. Comprehensively revised throughout, this edition reflects the rapid changes that have taken place recently. It contains additional material on a range of methods, including scanning probe techniques that reflect the need for analysis of materials at the nanoscale, and a detailed review of recent developments in data analysis and computing techniques. This is a well-written, beautifully presented, useful and interesting book. It explains how materials scientists can analyse and characterize microstructures in 3D materials, using modern statistical methods from 'stochastic geometry'. The authors are respectively a mathematical statistician and a materials scientist. The exposition is excellent, and goes all the way from basic theory to practical applications, including free software on their web site. The presentation is a good balance of theory, verbal explanation and practical examples. The illustrations and diagrams are very effective, and include some superlative 3-D pictures. The software is nicely presented and explained, also in relation to the equations. The topics covered include basic stereology, texture characterisation, digital image measurement, covariance and spectral techniques, size and shape distributions of particles, spatial arrangement of objects, and polyhedral single-phase microstructures. I found only a few tiny typos so far. Well worth the hardback price - and the hardback binding will take a beating before I'm done with it!
